Asymptotics of determinants of discrete Schrödinger operators

We consider the asymptotics of the determinants of large discrete Schrödinger operators, i.e. "discrete Laplacian $+$ diagonal": \[T_n(f) = -[δ_{j,j+1}+δ_{j+1,j}] + \mbox{diag}\left(f\left(\frac{1}{n}\right), f\left(\frac{2}{n}\right),\dots, f\left(\frac{n}{n}\right)\right) \] We extend a result of M. Kac, who found a formula for \[\lim_{n\rightarrow\infty} \frac{\det(T_n(f))}{G(f)^n} \] in terms of the values of $f$, where $G(f)$ is a constant. We extend this result in two ways: First, we consider shifting the index: Let \[T_n(f;\varepsilon) = -[δ_{j,j+1}+δ_{j+1,j}] + \mbox{diag}\left(f\left(\frac{\varepsilon}{n}\right), f\left(\frac{1+ \varepsilon}{n}\right), \dots, f\left(\frac{n-1+ \varepsilon}{n}\right)\right) \] We calculate $\lim \det T_n(f;\varepsilon)/G(f)^n$ and show that this limit can be any positive number by shifting $\varepsilon$, even though the asymptotic eigenvalue distribution of $T_n(f;\varepsilon)$ does not depend on $\varepsilon$. Secondly, we derive a formula for the asymptotics of $\det T_n(f)/G(f)^n$ when $f$ has jump discontinuities. In this case the asymptotics depend on the fractional part of $c n$, where $c$ is a point of discontinuity.

Ballistic Orbits and Front Speed Enhancement for ABC Flows

We study the two main types of trajectories of the ABC flow in the near-integrable regime: spiral orbits and edge orbits. The former are helical orbits which are perturbations of similar orbits that exist in the integrable regime, while the latter exist only in the non-integrable regime. We prove existence of ballistic (i.e., linearly growing) spiral orbits by using the contraction mapping principle in the Hamiltonian formulation, and we also find and analyze ballistic edge orbits. We discuss the relationship of existence of these orbits with questions concerning front propagation in the presence of flows, in particular, the question of linear (i.e., maximal possible) front speed enhancement rate for ABC flows.

Spectral asymptotics for Kac-Murdock-Szegő matrices

Szegő's First Limit Theorem provides the limiting statistical distribution (LSD) of the eigenvalues of large Toeplitz matrices. Szegő's Second (or Strong) Limit Theorem for Toeplitz matrices gives a second order correction to the First Limit Theorem, and allows one to calculate asymptotics for the determinants of large Toeplitz matrices. In this paper we survey results extending the first and strong limit theorems to Kac-Murdock-Szegő (KMS) matrices. These are matrices whose entries along the diagonals are not necessarily constants, but modeled by functions. We clarify and extend some existing results, and explain some apparently contradictory results in the literature.
