The DIS dipole picture cross section in exact kinematics

We implement a finite energy constraint in the dipole picture of deep inelastic scattering by restricting the invariant mass of the produced partonic system by the virtual photon-target center of mass energy. We show that, for $Q^2=1$GeV$^2$, the effect of this constraint can reach up to $\sim$35% for charm quarks and $\sim$7% for light quarks at $x=0.01$, but then rapidly decreases at smaller $x$ or larger $Q^2$.

Two-Loop DGLAP Splitting Functions from Light Cone Perturbation Theory

We perform a two-loop calculation in Light Cone Perturbation Theory (LCPT) to evaluate the next-to-leading order nonsinglet splitting function. Our calculation demonstrates the methodology and feasibility of performing higher order calculations in LCPT. Since in Hamiltonian perturbation theory the longitudinal $k^+$ momentum is always positive, poles in $1/k^+$ can be regularized by a simple cutoff which cancels in physical results, without any associated ambiguities. For transverse momentum integrals we use dimensional regularization. Developing methods for loop calculations in LCPT paves the way for a systematical, automatizable procedure for precision calculations in this framework with a transparent physical partonic interpretation. This can provide a standard framework in higher order calculations in the gluon saturation regime of QCD.

Signatures of gluon saturation from structure-function measurements

We study experimentally observable signals for nonlinear QCD dynamics in deep inelastic scattering (DIS) at small Bjorken variable $x$ and moderate virtuality $Q^2$, by quantifying differences between the linear Dokshitzer-Gribov-Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi (DGLAP) evolution and nonlinear evolution with the Balitsky-Kovchegov (BK) equation. To remove the effect of the parametrization freedom in the initial conditions of both equations, we first match the predictions for the DIS structure functions $F_2$ and $F_{\rm L}$ from both frameworks in a region in $x,Q^2$ where both frameworks should provide an accurate description of the relevant physics. The differences in the dynamics are then quantified by the deviations when one moves away from this matching region. For free protons we find that the differences in $F_2$ remain at a few-percent level, while in $F_{\rm L}$ the deviations are larger, up to $10\,\%$ at the EIC and $40\,\%$ at the LHeC kinematics. With a heavy nucleus the differences are up to $10\,\%$ in $F_2$, and can reach $20\,\%$ and $60\,\%$ in $F_{\rm L}$ for the EIC and the LHeC, respectively.

Fermion and gluon spectral functions far from equilibrium

Motivated by the quark-gluon plasma, we develop a simulation method to obtain the spectral function of (Wilson) fermions non-perturbatively in a non-Abelian gauge theory with large gluon occupation numbers [arXiv:2106.11319]. We apply our method to a non-Abelian plasma close to its non-thermal fixed point, i.e., in a far-from-equilibrium self-similar regime, and find mostly very good agreement with perturbative hard loop (HTL) calculations. For the first time, we extract the full momentum dependence of the damping rate of fermionic collective excitations and compare our results to recent non-perturbative extractions of gluonic spectral functions in two and three spatial dimensions [arXiv:2101.02715, arXiv:1804.01966].

New opportunities at the photon energy frontier

Ultra-peripheral collisions (UPCs) involving heavy ions and protons are the energy frontier for photon-mediated interactions. UPC photons can be used for many purposes, including probing low-$x$ gluons via photoproduction of dijets and vector mesons, probes of beyond-standard-model processes, such as those enabled by light-by-light scattering, and studies of two-photon production of the Higgs.

The dipole picture and the non-relativistic expansion

We study exclusive quarkonium production in the dipole picture at next-to-leading order (NLO) accuracy, using the non-relativistic expansion for the quarkonium wavefunction. This process offers one of the best ways to obtain information about gluon distributions at small $x$, in ultraperipheral heavy ion collisions and in deep inelastic scattering. The quarkonium light cone wave functions needed in the dipole picture have typically been available only at tree level, either in phenomenological models or in the nonrelativistic limit. In this paper, we discuss the compatibility of the dipole approach and the non-relativistic expansion and compute NLO relativistic corrections to the quarkonium light-cone wave function in light-cone gauge. Using these corrections we recover results for the NLO decay width of quarkonium to $e^{+}e^{-}$ and we check that the non-relativistic expansion is consistent with ERBL evolution and with B-JIMWLK evolution of the target. The results presented here will allow computing the exclusive quarkonium production rate at NLO once the one loop photon wave function with massive quarks, currently under investigation, is known.

The distribution of linearly polarized gluons and elliptic azimuthal anisotropy in DIS dijet production at high energy

We determine the distribution of linearly polarized gluons of a dense target at small $x$ by solving the B-JIMWLK rapidity evolution equations. From these solutions we estimate the amplitude of $\sim \cos 2ϕ$ azimuthal asymmetries in DIS dijet production at high energies. We find sizeable long-range in rapidity azimuthal asymmetries with a magnitude in the range of $v_2=\langle\cos 2ϕ\rangle \sim 10\%$.

The Hot QCD White Paper: Exploring the Phases of QCD at RHIC and the LHC

The past decade has seen huge advances in experimental measurements made in heavy ion collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and more recently at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). These new data, in combination with theoretical advances from calculations made in a variety of frameworks, have led to a broad and deep knowledge of the properties of thermal QCD matter. Increasingly quantitative descriptions of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) created in these collisions have established that the QGP is a strongly coupled liquid with the lowest value of specific viscosity ever measured. However, much remains to be learned about the precise nature of the initial state from which this liquid forms, how its properties vary across its phase diagram and how, at a microscopic level, the collective properties of this liquid emerge from the interactions among the individual quarks and gluons that must be visible if the liquid is probed with sufficiently high resolution. This white paper, prepared by the Hot QCD Writing Group as part of the U.S. Long Range Plan for Nuclear Physics, reviews the recent progress in the field of hot QCD and outlines the scientific opportunities in the next decade for resolving the outstanding issues in the field.

Are the Angular Correlations in pA Collisions due to a Glasmion or Bose Condensation ?

Experiments at the LHC have recently reported results on the angular asymmetry coefficients $v_n[m]$, for various angular moments $n$ and orders of cumulants $m$, in high multiplicity p+Pb collisions. These coefficients are large, and have both even and odd moments. We discuss here some of the implications of these results for our understanding of the initial state of the collision (Color Glass Condensate) and for the evolution in the final state (Glasma and thermalized Quark Gluon Plasma). We show the Color Glass Condensate predicts large even moments, $v_n$ with $n$ an even integer. Odd moments are generated by final state interactions or fragmentation. For a multi-particle determination of $v_2[m]$, where m is the number of particles used to determine the correlation, we argue that if these coefficients approach equality for large $m$ in high multiplicity events, this may imply the existence of either solitonic solutions or Bose condensation either for the JIMWLK action that describes the CGC, or for the Glasma that might be produced in such a collision.

Forward dihadron correlations in the Gaussian approximation of JIMWLK

We compute forward dihadron azimuthal correlations in deuteron-gold collisions using a Gaussian approximation for the quadrupole operator. The double parton scattering contribution is found to be part of our dihadron calculation. We obtain a good description of the PHENIX data for the azimuthal-angle dependent away side peak and a relatively good estimate for the pedestal contribution.

Renormalization group evolution of multi-gluon correlators in high energy QCD

Many-body QCD in leading high energy Regge asymptotics is described by the Balitsky-JIMWLK hierarchy of renormalization group equations for the x evolution of multi-point Wilson line correlators. These correlators are universal and ubiquitous in final states in deeply inelastic scattering and hadronic collisions. For instance, recently measured di-hadron correlations at forward rapidity in deuteron-gold collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) are sensitive to four and six point correlators of Wilson lines in the small x color fields of the dense nuclear target. We evaluate these correlators numerically by solving the functional Langevin equation that describes the Balitsky-JIMWLK hierarchy. We compare the results to mean-field Gaussian and large N_c approximations used in previous phenomenological studies. We comment on the implications of our results for quantitative studies of multi-gluon final states in high energy QCD.

The ridge in proton-proton collisions at the LHC

We show that the key features of the CMS result on the ridge correlation seen for high multiplicity events in sqrt(s)=7TeV proton-proton collisions at the LHC can be understood in the Color Glass Condensate framework of high energy QCD. The same formalism underlies the explanation of the ridge events seen in A+A collisions at RHIC, albeit it is likely that flow effects may enhance the magnitude of the signal in the latter.

High energy scattering in Quantum Chromodynamics

In this series of three lectures, we discuss several aspects of high energy scattering among hadrons in Quantum Chromodynamics. The first lecture is devoted to a description of the parton model, Bjorken scaling and the scaling violations due to the evolution of parton distributions with the transverse resolution scale. The second lecture describes parton evolution at small momentum fraction x, the phenomenon of gluon saturation and the Color Glass Condensate (CGC). In the third lecture, we present the application of the CGC to the study of high energy hadronic collisions, with emphasis on nucleus-nucleus collisions. In particular, we provide the outline of a proof of high energy factorization for inclusive gluon production.
