Theoretical Insights into Non-Arrhenius Behaviors of Thermal Vacancies in Anharmonic Crystals

Vacancies are prevalent point defects in crystals, but their thermal responses are elusive. Herein, we formulate a simple theoretical model to shed light on the vacancy evolution during heating. Vibrational excitations are thoroughly investigated via moment recurrence techniques in quantum statistical mechanics. On that basis, we carry out numerical analyses for Ag, Cu, and Ni with the Sutton-Chen many-body potential. Our results reveal that the well-known Arrhenius law is insufficient to describe the proliferation of vacancies. Specifically, anharmonic effects lead to a strong nonlinearity in the Gibbs energy of vacancy formation. Our physical picture is well supported by previous simulations and experiments.

Modification of the Statistical Moment Method for the High-Pressure Melting Curve by the Inclusion of Thermal Vacancies

Melting behaviors of defective crystals under extreme conditions are theoretically investigated using the statistical moment method. In our theoretical model, heating processes cause missing atoms or vacancies in crystal structures via dislocating them from their equilibrium positions. The coordination number of some atoms is assumed to be removed by one unit and the defect depends on temperature and external pressure. We formulate analytical expressions to directly connect the equilibrium vacancy concentration, the elastic modulus, and the melting temperature. Numerical calculations are carried out for six transition metals including Cu, Ag, Au, Mo, Ta, and W up to 400 GPa. The obtained results show that vacancies strongly drive the melting transition. Ignoring the vacancy formation leads to incorrect predictions of the melting point. The good agreement between our numerical data and prior experimental works validates the accuracy of our approach.

Structural Relaxation Time and Dynamic Shear Modulus of Glassy Graphene

We theoretically investigate glass transition behaviors of the glassy graphene in a wide range of temperature, where this amorphous graphene is described as a hard-sphere fluid. The dynamic arrest of a particle is assumingly caused by interactions with its nearest neighbors and surrounding fluid particles. The assumption allows us to analyze roles of local and collective particle mobility. We calculate the temperature dependence of structural relaxation time and dynamic shear modulus, the dynamic fragility, and the glass transition temperature. In addition, correlations between these physical quantities are comprehensively discussed. Our theoretical calculations agree quantitatively well with recent simulations and Dyre's shoving model.
