Kaon-baryon coupling schemes and kaon condensation in hyperon-mixed matter

Possible coexistence of kaon condensation and hyperons in highly dense matter [the ($Y+K$) phase] is investigated on the basis of the relativistic mean-field theory combined with the effective chiral Lagrangian. Two coupling schemes for the $s$-wave kaon-baryon interaction are compared regarding the onset density of kaon condensation in the hyperon-mixed matter and equation of state for the developed ($Y+K$) phase: One is the contact interaction scheme related to the nonlinear effective chiral Lagrangian. The other is the meson-exchange scheme, where the interaction vertices between the kaon field and baryons are described by exchange of mesons (sigma, sigma^* mesons for scalar coupling, and omega, rho, phi mesons for vector coupling). It is shown that in the meson exchange scheme, the contribution from the nonlinear scalar self-interaction gives rise to a repulsive effect for kaon effective energy, pushing up the onset density of kaon condensation as compared with the case of the contact interaction scheme. In general, the difference of kaon-baryon dynamics between the contact interaction scheme and the meson-exchange scheme relies on the specific forms of the nonlinear self-interacting meson terms. It is shown that the nonlinear self-interacting term is not relevant to repulsive energy leading to stiffening of the equation of state at high densities and that it cannot be compensated with large attractive energy due to the appearance of the ($Y$+$K$) phase in the case of the contact interaction scheme. We also discuss in the contact interaction scheme what effects are necessary so as to make the equation of state with (Y+K) phase stiff enough to be consistent with recent observations of massive neutron stars.

Transport properties in magnetized compact stars

Transport properties of dense quark matter are discussed in the strong magnetic field, B. B dependence as well as density dependence of the Hall conductivity is discussed in the inhomogeneous chiral phase. Anomalous Hall effect is intrinsic to the inhomogeneous chiral phase and resembles the one in Weyl semimetals in condensed matter physics. Some theoretical aspects inherent in anomalous Hall effect are revealed.

Systematic study on the quark-hadron mixed phase in compact stars

We investigate systematically the quark-hadron mixed phase in dense stellar matter, and its influence on compact star structures. The properties of quark matter and hadronic matter are fixed based on various model predictions. Beside adopting constant values, the surface tension $Σ$ for the quark-hadron interface is estimated with the multiple reflection expansion method and equivparticle model. To fix the structures of quark-hadron pasta phases, a continuous dimensionality of the structure is adopted as proposed by Ravenhall, Pethick, and Wilson. The corresponding properties of hybrid stars are then obtained and confronted with pulsar observations. It is found that the correlation between radius and tidal deformability in traditional neutron stars preserves in hybrid stars. For those permitted by pulsar observations, in almost all cases the quark phase persists inside the most massive compact stars. The quark-hadron interface plays an important role on hybrid star structures once quark matter emerges. The surface tension $Σ$ estimated with various methods increases with density, which predicts stiffer EOSs for the quark-hadron mixed phase and increases the maximum mass of hybrid stars. The EOSs of hybrid star matter are well constrained at densities $n\lesssim 0.8$ fm${}^{-3}$, while larger uncertainty is expected at higher densities.

Transport properties in magnetized compact stars

Transport properties of dense QCD matter is discussed. Using the Kubo formula for conductivity, we discuss some topological aspects of quark matter during chiral transition. The close relation to Weyl semimetal is pointed out and anomalous Hall effect is demonstrated to be possible there. In particular, it is shown that the spectral asymmetry of the quasi-particles plays an important role for the Hall conductivity in the magnetic field.

Magnetic properties in the inhomogeneous chiral phase

We investigate the magnetic properties of quark matter in the inhomogeneous chiral phase, where both scalar and pseudoscalar condensates spatially modulate. The energy spectrum of the lowest Landau level becomes asymmetric about zero in the external magnetic field, and gives rise to the remarkably magnetic properties: quark matter has a spontaneous magnetization, while the magnetic susceptibility does not diverge on the critical point.

Coexistence of Kaon Condensation and Hyperons in Hadronic Matter and Its Relevance to Quark Matter

Coexistence of kaon condensation and hyperons, which may be realized in neutron stars, is investigated on the basis of the relativistic mean-field theory combined with the effective chiral Lagrangian. It is shown that kaon-condensed phase in hyperon-mixed matter is plausible, but it leads to significant softening of the equation of state (EOS).We discuss indispensable effects which make the EOS stiffer so as to be consistent with recent neutron-star observations.

Cooling of Compact Stars with Color Superconducting Quark Matter

We show a scenario for the cooling of compact stars considering the central source of Cassiopeia A (Cas A). The Cas A observation shows that the central source is a compact star with high effective temperature, and it is consistent with the cooling without exotic phases. The Cas A observation also gives the mass range of $M \geq 1.5 M_\odot$. It may conflict with the current cooling scenarios of compact stars that heavy stars show rapid cooling. We include the effect of the color superconducting (CSC) quark matter phase on the thermal evolution of compact stars. We assume the gap energy of CSC quark phase is large ($Δ\gtrsim \mathrm{10 MeV}$), and we simulate the cooling of compact stars. We present cooling curves obtained from the evolutionary calculations of compact stars: while heavier stars cool slowly, and lighter ones indicate the opposite tendency.

Hybrid chiral condensate in the external magnetic field

We study the phase diagram of the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model in the external magnetic field within the mean-field approximation, taking into account the inhomogeneous chiral condensate. It is shown that there appears a new type of the chiral condensate, endowed with two features of real kink crystal and dual chiral density wave, in the magnetic field. We also show that there are first order phase transitions between different inhomogeneous phases in the presence of magnetic field.

Landau-Peierls instability in a Fulde-Ferrell type inhomogeneous chiral condensed phase

We investigate the stability of an inhomogeneous chiral condensed phase against low energy fluctuations about a spatially modulated order parameter. This phase corresponds to the so-called dual chiral density wave in the context of quark matter, where the chiral condensate is spatially modulated with a finite wavevector in a single direction. From the symmetry viewpoint, the phase realizes a locking of flavor and translational symmetries. Starting with a Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson effective Lagrangian, we find that the associated Nambu-Goldstone modes, whose dispersion relations are spatially anisotropic and soft in the direction normal to the wavevector of the modulation, wash out the long-range order at finite temperatures, but support algebraically decaying long-range correlations. This implies that the phase can exhibit a quasi-one-dimensional order as in liquid crystals.

Spontaneous Magnetization of Quark Matter in Inhomogeneous Chiral Phase

Considering the density wave of scalar and pseudoscalar condensates, we study the response of quark matter to a weak external magnetic field. In an external magnetic field, the energy spectrum of the lowest Landau level becomes asymmetric about zero, which is closely related to chiral anomaly. This spectral asymmetry gives rise to spontaneous magnetization. This mechanism may be one of candidates for the origin of the strong magnetic field in magnetars. Furthermore, using the generalized Ginzburg-Landau(gGL) expansion, we show that magnetic susceptibility exhibits a peculiar feature

Symmetry breaking effect on the inhomogeneous chiral transition in the magnetic field

We study the change of the effect of the current quark mass on the inhomogeneous chiral phase in the QCD phase diagram, and discuss the property of the phase transition by the generalized Ginzburg-Landau expansion. The strong external magnetic field spreads this phase over the low chemical potential region even if the current quark mass is finite. This implies that the existence of this phase can be explored by the lattice QCD simulation.

Massive Hybrid Quark Stars with Strong Magnetic Field

We estimate the critical magnetic field strength at which the lowest or second Landau levels play an important role in the quark phase inside the hybrid stars, and show that the magnetic field should be in the order of $10^{19}$ Gauss at the nuclear density $\sim0.16$ fm$^{-3}$. We also find that the pressure of quark matter settling only in the lowest Landau level can be expressed as a function of the energy density independently of the magnetic field strength, which corresponds to the causality limit of a stiff equation of state. Adiabatic index of quark matter well exceeds 4/3 in the core, and we find a possibility to construct massive hybrid star models occupied in large part by quark matter, whose maximum mass becomes larger than two solar mass.

Quark beta decay in the inhomogeneous chiral phase and cooling of compact stars

A novel cooling mechanism is proposed for neutron stars, based on the recent development in the studies of the QCD phase diagram. Possible appearance of the inhomogeneous chiral phase makes the quark beta decay without gluonic interaction. An estimate of the neutrino emissivity shows the order of $10^{24-26}(T/10^9)^6$(erg cm$^{-3}$ s$^{-1}$) near the phase boundaries, whose efficiency is comparable with the usual quark cooling or pion cooling, but it works only in the limited density region. These features may give another cooling scenario of neutron stars.

preprint2013arXiv

Cooling of Compact Stars with Color Superconducting Phase in Quark Hadron Mixed Phase

We present a new scenario for the cooling of compact stars considering the central source of Cassiopeia A (Cas A). The Cas A observation shows that the central source is a compact star that has high effective temperature, and it is consistent with the cooling without exotic phases. The observation also gives the mass range of $M \geqslant 1.5 M_\odot$, which may conflict with the current plausible cooling scenario of compact stars. There are some cooled compact stars such as Vela or 3C58, which can be barely explained by the minimal cooling scenario, which includes the neutrino emission by nucleon superfluidity (PBF). Therefore, we invoke the exotic cooling processes, where a heavier star cools faster than lighter one. However, the scenario seems to be inconsistent with the observation of Cas A. Therefore, we present a new cooling scenario to explain the observation of Cas A by constructing models that include a quark color superconducting (CSC) phase with a large energy gap; this phase appears at ultrahigh density region and reduces neutrino emissivity. In our model, a compact star has CSC quark core with a low neutrino emissivity surrounded by high emissivity region made by normal quarks. We present cooling curves obtained from the evolutionary calculations of compact stars: while heavier stars cool slowly, and lighter ones indicate the opposite tendency without considering nucleon superfluidity. Furthermore, we show that our scenario is consistent with the recent observations of the effective temperature of Cas A during the last 10 years, including nucleon superfluidity.

Nuclear "pasta" structures in low-density nuclear matter and neutron star crust

In neutron star crust, non-uniform structure of nuclear matter is expected, which is called the "pasta" structure. From the recent studies of giant flares in magnetars, these structures might be related to some observables and physical quantities of the neutron star crust. To investigate the above quantities, we numerically explore the pasta structures with a fully threedimensional geometry and study the properties of low-density nuclear matter, based on the relativistic mean-field model and the Thomas-Fermi approximation. We observe typical pasta structures for fixed proton number-fraction and two of them for cold catalyzed matter. We also discuss the crystalline configuration of "pasta".

Shear oscillations in the hadron-quark mixed phase

Inside neutron stars, the hadron-quark mixed phase is expected during the first order phase transition from the hadron phase to the quark phase. The geometrical structure of the mixed phase strongly depends on the surface tension at the hadron-quark interface. We evaluate the shear modulus which is one of the specific properties of the hadron-quark mixed phase. As an application, we study shear oscillations due to the hadron-quark mixed phase in neutron stars. We find that the frequencies of shear oscillations depend strongly on the surface tension; with a fixed stellar mass, the fundamental frequencies are almost proportional to the surface tension. Thus, one can estimate the value of surface tension via the observation of stellar oscillations with the help of the information on the stellar mass.

Amorphous state in the mixed phase of quark-hadron phase transition in protoneutron stars

We study the hadron-quark mixed phase in protoneutron stars, where neutrinos are trapped and lepton number becomes a conserved quantity besides the baryon number and electric charge. Considering protoneutron-star matter as a ternary system, the Gibbs conditions are applied together with the Coulomb interaction. We find that there no crystalline ("pasta") structure appears in the regime of high lepton-number fraction; the size of pasta becomes very large and the geometrical structure becomes mechanically unstable due to the charge screening effect. Consequently the whole system is separated into two bulk regions like an amorphous state, where the surface effect is safely neglected. There, the local charge neutrality is approximately attained, so that the equation of state is effectively reduced to the one for a binary system. Hence, we conclude that there is no possibility for the density discontinuity to appear in protoneutron-star matter, which is a specific feature in a pure system. These features are important when considering astrophysical phenomena such as supernova explosions or radiation of the gravitational wave from protoneutron stars.

Non-congruence of liquid-gas phase transition of asymmetric nuclear matter

We first explore the liquid-gas mixed phase in a bulk calculation, where two phases coexist without the geometrical structures. In the case of symmetric nuclear matter, the system behaves congruently, and the Maxwell construction becomes relevant. For asymmetric nuclear matter, on the other hand, the phase equilibrium is no more attained by the Maxwell construction since the liquid and gas phases are non-congruent; the particle fractions become completely different with each other. One of the origins of such non-congruence is attributed to the large symmetry energy. Subsequently we explore the charge-neutral nuclear matter with electrons by fully applying the Gibbs conditions to figure out the geometrical (pasta) structures in the liquid-gas mixed phase. We emphasize the effects of the surface tension and the Coulomb interaction on the pasta structures. We also discuss the thermal effects on the pasta structures.

Thermodynamical description of hadron-quark phase transition and its implications on compact-star phenomena

One of the most promising possibilities may be the appearance of quark matter in astrophysical phenomena in the light of recent progress in observations. The mechanism of deconfinement is not well understood, but the thermodynamical aspects of the hadron-quark (HQ) phase transition have been extensively studied in recent years. Then the mixed phase of hadron and quark matter becomes important; the proper treatment is needed to describe the HQ phase transition and derive the equation of state (EOS) for the HQ matter, based on the Gibbs conditions for phase equilibrium. We here adopt a EOS based on the baryon-baryon interactions including hyperons for the hadron phase, while we use rather simple EOS within the MIT bag model in the quark phase. For quark matter we further try to improve the previous EOS by considering other effective models of QCD. One of the interesting consequences may be the appearance of the inhomogeneous structures called "pasta", which are brought about by the surface and the Coulomb interaction effects. We present here a comprehensive review of our recent works about the HQ phase transition in various astrophysical situations: cold catalyzed matter, hot matter and neutrino-trapped matter. We show how the pasta structure becomes unstable by the charge screening of the Coulomb interaction, thermal effect or the neutrino trapping effect. Such inhomogeneous structure may affect astrophysical phenomena through its elasticity or thermal properties. Here we also discuss some implications on supernova explosion, gravitational wave and cooling of compact stars.

Magnetic field and quark matter in the core

Magnetic properties of quark matter are discussed in the light of the observation of pulsars. Our works about spontaneous spin polarization and spin density wave are reviewed and their implications on compact-star phenomena are discussed. In particular, the former subject may be directly related to the origin of strong magnetic fields. An inhomogeneous state emerges following the chiral transition, where a kind of spin density wave develops.

Mixed phases during the phase transitions

Quest for a new form of matter inside compact stars compels us to examine the thermodynamical properties of the phase transitions. We closely consider the first-order phase transitions and the phase equilibrium on the basis of the Gibbs conditions, taking the liquid-gas phase transition in asymmetric nuclear matter as an example. Characteristic features of the mixed phase are figured out by solving the coupled equations for mean-fields and densities of constituent particles self-consistently within the Thomas-Fermi approximation. The mixed phase is inhomogeneous matter composed of two phases in equilibrium; it takes a crystalline structure with a unit of various geometrical shapes, inside of which one phase with a characteristic shape, called "pasta", is embedded in another phase by some volume fraction. This framework enables us to properly take into account the Coulomb interaction and the interface energy, and thereby sometimes we see the mechanical instability of the geometric structures of the mixed phase. Thermal effect on the liquid-gas phase transition is also elucidated. Similarly hadron-quark deconfinement transition is studied in hyperonic matter, where the neutrino-trapping effect as well as the thermal effect is discussed in relation to the properties of the mixed phase. Specific features of the mixed phase are elucidated and the equation of state is presented.

Three-dimensional calculation of inhomogeneous structure in low-density nuclear matter

In low-density nuclear matter which is relevant to the crust region of neutron stars and collapsing stage of supernovae, non-uniform structures called "nuclear pasta" are expected. So far, most works on nuclear pasta have used the Wigner-Seitz cell approximation with anzats about the geometrical structures like droplet, rod, slab and so on. We perform fully three-dimensional calculation of non-uniform nuclear matter for some cases with fixed proton ratios and in beta-equilibrium based on the relativistic mean-field model and the Thomas-Fermi approximation. In our calculation typical pasta structures are observed. However, there appears some difference in the density region of each pasta structure.

Effects of the $Λ$(1405) on the Structure of Multi-Antikaonic Nuclei

The effects of the $Λ$(1405) ($Λ^\ast$) on the structure of the multi-antikaonic nucleus (MKN), in which several $K^-$ mesons are embedded to form deeply bound states, are considered based on chiral symmetry combined with a relativistic mean-field theory. It is shown that additional attraction resulting from the $Λ^\ast$ pole has a sizable contribution to not only the density profiles for the nucleons and $K^-$ mesons but also the ground state energy of the $K^-$ mesons and binding energy of the MKN as the number of the embedded $K^-$ mesons increases.

Equation of State of Structured Matter at Finite Temperature

We investigate the properties of nuclear matter at the first-order phase transitions such as liquid-gas phase transition and hadron-quark phase transition. As a general feature of the first-order phase transitions of matter consisting of many species of charged particles, there appears a mixed phases with geometrical structures called ``pasta'' due to the balance of the Coulomb repulsion and the surface tension between two phases. The equation of state (EOS) of mixed phase is different from the one obtained by a bulk application of the Gibbs conditions or by the Maxwell construction due to the effects of the non-uniform structure. We show that the charge screening and strong surface tension make the EOS close to that of the Maxwell construction. The thermal effects are elucidated as well as the above finite-size effects.

Liquid-gas mixed phase in nuclear matter at finite temperature

We explore the geometrical structure of Liquid-gas (LG) mixed phase which is relevant to nuclear matter in the crust region of compact stars or supernovae. To get the equation of state (EOS) of the system, the Maxwell construction is found to be applicable to symmetric nuclear matter, where protons and neutrons behave simultaneously. For asymmetric nuclear matter, on the other hand, the phase equilibrium can be obtained by fully solving the Gibbs conditions since the components in the L and G phases are completely different. We also discuss the effects of surface and the Coulomb interaction on the mixed phase.

Magnetic aspects of QCD and compact stars

Magnetic properties of quark matter are discussed. The possibility of ferromagnetic transition is studied by using the one-gluon-exchange interaction. Magnetic susceptibility is evaluated within Landau Fermi liquid theory, and the important roles of the screening for the gluon propagation are elucidated. Static screening for the longitudinal gluons improves the infrared singularities, while the transverse gluons receive only dynamic screening. The latter property gives rise to a novel non-Fermi-liquid behaviour in the magnetic susceptibility. The critical density is estimated to be around the nuclear density and the Curie temperature several tens MeV. The spin density wave is also discussed at moderate densities, where chiral transition becomes important. Pseudoscalar condensate as well as scalar one takes a spatially non-uniform form in a chirally invariant way. Accordingly magnetization oscillates like spin density wave. These results should have some implications on compact star phenomena.

Magnetic aspects of QCD at finite density and temperature

Some magnetic aspects of QCD are discussed at finite density and temperature. Possibility of spontaneous magnetization is studied within Landau Fermi-liquid theory, and the important roles of the screening effects for gluon propagation are elucidated. Static screening for the longitudinal gluons improves the infrared singularities, while the transverse gluons receive only dynamic screening. The latter property gives rise to a novel non-Fermi-liquid behaviour for the magnetic susceptibility. Appearance of a density-wave state is also discussed in relation to chiral transition, where pseudoscalar condensate as well as scalar one takes a spatially non-uniform form in a chirally invariant way. Accordingly magnetization of quark matter oscillates like spin density wave. A hadron-quark continuity is suggested in this aspect, remembering pion condensation in hadronic phase.

Pasta Structures of Quark-Hadron Phase Transition in Proto-Neutron Stars

We study the quark-hadron mixed phase in proto-neutron stars with the finite-size effects. In the calculations of pasta structures appeared in the mixed phase, the Gibbs conditions require the pressure balance and chemical equilibrium between two phases besides the thermal equilibrium. We find that the region of the mixed phase is limited due to thermal instability. Moreover, we study the effects of neutrinos to the pasta structures. As a result, we find that the existence of neutrinos make the pasta structures unstable, too. These characteristic features of the hadron-quark mixed phase should be important for the middle stage of the evolutions of proto-neutron stars.

Signatures of hadron-quark mixed phase in gravitational waves

We calculate stellar oscillations including the hadron-quark mixed phase considering the finite size effects. We find that it is possible to distinguish whether the density discontinuity exists or not in the stars, even if one will observe the gravitational waves of the fundamental mode. Additionally, the normalized eigenfrequencies of pressure modes depend strongly on the stellar mass and on the adopted equation of state. Especially, in spite of the fact that the radius of the neutron star with $1.4M_\odot$, which is standard mass, is almost independent from the equation of state with quark matter, the frequencies of pressure modes depend on the adopted equation of state. Thus, via observing the many kinds of gravitational waves, it will be possible to make a restriction on the equation of state.

General relativistic compact stars with exotic matter

We study structures of general relativistic compact stars with exotic matter. Our study is based on axisymetric and stationary formalism including purely toroidal magnetic field. We also study the finite size effects of quark-hadron mixed phase on structures of magnetars. For hybrid stars, we find a characteristic distribution of magnetic field, which has a discontinuity originated in the quark-hadron mixed phase. These distributions of magnetic field will change astrophysical phenomena, such as cooling processes.

Kaon Condensation and Lambda-Nucleon Loop in the Relativistic Mean-Field Approach

The possibility of kaon condensation in high-density symmetric nuclear matter is investigated including both s- and p-wave kaon-baryon interactions within the relativistic mean-field (RMF) theory. Above a certain density, we have a collective ${\bar K}_s$ state carrying the same quantum numbers as the antikaon. The appearance of the ${\bar K}_s$ state is caused by the time component of the axial-vector interaction between kaons and baryons. It is shown that the system becomes unstable with respect to condensation of $K$-${\bar K}_s$ pairs. We consider how the effective baryon masses affect the kaon self-energy coming from the time component of the axial-vector interaction. Also, the role of the spatial component of the axial-vector interaction on the possible existence of the collective kaonic states is discussed in connection with $Λ$-mixing effects in the ground state of high-density matter. Implications of $K{\bar K}_s$ condensation for high-energy heavy-ion collisions are briefly mentioned.
