We consider the cosmetic surgery problem for two-bridge knots in the 3-sphere. It is seen that all the two-bridge knots at most 9 crossings other than 927=S(49,19)=C[2,2,−2,2,2,−2] admits no purely cosmetic surgery pairs. Then we show that any two-bridge knot of the Conway form [2x,2,−2x,2x,2,−2x] with x≥1 admits no cosmetic surgery pairs yielding homology 3-spheres, where 927 appears for x=1. Our advantage to prove this is using the SL(2,C) Casson invariant.
We show that for any given closed orientable 3-manifold M with a Heegaard surface of genus g, any positive integers b and n, there exists a knot K in M which admits a (g,b)-bridge splitting of distance greater than n with respect to the Heegaard surface except for (g,b) = (0,1), (0,2).
Let K be a non-trivial knot in the 3-sphere with a lens space surgery and L(p,q) a lens space obtained by a Dehn surgery on K. We study a relationship between the order of the fundamental group of L(p,q) and the Seifert genus of K.
In this paper, we consider which lens spaces are obtainable by Dehn surgery described by Berge on doubly primitive knots. It is given an algorithm to decide whether a given lens space is obtainable by such surgery. Also included is a complete characterization of such surgery yielding lens spaces with Klein bottles.
