Dirac gaugino from grand gauge-Higgs unification

We show that models of the Dirac gaugino can naturally be embedded into a kind of the grand unified theory (GUT), the grand gauge-Higgs unification (gGHU) model, with the gauge group SU(5)\times SU(5)/Z_2 on an S^1/Z_2 orbifold. The supersymmetric gGHU is known to posess a light chiral adjoint supermultiplet after the GUT breaking, thank to the exchange symmetry of two SU(5) groups. Identifying the `predicted' adjoint fermion with the Dirac partner of the gaugino, we argue that the supersoft term, responsible for the Dirac gaugino mass, can be obtained from the supersymmetric Chern-Simons (CS) like term in the gGHU setup. Although the latter term does not respect the exchange symmetry, we propose a novel way to introduce its breaking effect within a consistent orbifold construction. We also give a concrete setup of fermion field contents (bulk and boundary-localized fermions) that induce the requisite CS-like term, and calculate its coefficient from the bulk profile of chiral fermion zero modes. Our gGHU setup may be regarded as an extra-dimensional realization of the Goldstone gaugino scenario that was proposed before as a solution to the problem of the adjoint scalar masses.

$μ$ term and supersymmetry breaking from six dimensional theory

We propose a new next-to-minimal supersymmetric standard model (NMSSM) which is on a six-dimensional spacetime compactified on a $T^2/Z_3$ orbifold. In this model, three gauge singlet fields $N, S_1$ and $S_2$ in addition to the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) fields are introduced. These fields are localized at some fixed points except for the singlet $N$ and the gauge fields. The $μ$ parameter is provided from the vacuum expectation value (vev) of $N$. The $F$ terms get vevs simultaneously, and the gauginos mediate the supersymmetry breaking to the MSSM sector. Both of these parameters are strongly suppressed due to the profile of $N$. Thus these parameters induced from those of the order of the so-called GUT scale can become close to the electroweak scale without unnatural fine tuning.

Higgs as a Probe of Supersymmetric Grand Unification with the Hosotani Mechanism

The supersymmetric grand unified theory where the SU(5) gauge symmetry is broken by the Hosotani mechanism predicts the existence of adjoint chiral superfields whose masses are at the supersymmetry breaking scale. The Higgs sector is extended with the SU(2)_L triplet with hypercharge zero and neutral singlet chiral multiplets from that in the minimal supersymmetric standard model. Since the triplet and singlet chiral multiplets originate from a higher-dimensional vector multiplet, this model is highly predictive. Properties of the particles in the Higgs sector are characteristic and can be different from those in the Standard Model and other models. We evaluate deviations in coupling constants of the standard model-like Higgs boson and the mass spectrum of the additional Higgs bosons. We find that our model is discriminative from the others by precision measurements of these coupling constants and masses of the additional Higgs bosons. This model can be a good example of grand unification that is testable at future collider experiments such as the luminosity up-graded Large Hadron Collider and future electron-positron colliders.

Family Gauge Bosons with an Inverted Mass Hierarchy

A model that gives family gauge bosons with an inverted mass hierarchy is proposed, stimulated by Sumino's cancellation mechanism for the QED radiative correction to the charged lepton masses. The Sumino mechanism cannot straightforwardly be applied to SUSY models because of the non-renormalization theorem. In this talk, an alternative model which is applicable to a SUSY model is proposed. It is essential that family gauge boson masses $m(A_i^j)$ in this model is given by an inverted mass hierarchy $m(A_i^i) \propto 1/\sqrt{m_{ei}}$, in contrast to $m(A_i^i) \propto \sqrt{m_{ei}}$ in the original Sumino model. Phenomenological meaning of the model is also investigated. In particular, we notice a deviation from the $e$-$μ$ universality in the tau decays.

Heterotic E6 GUTs and Partition Functions

The E6 grand unified theory is an attractive candidate intermediate theory between the standard model and string theory. However, only one E6 grand unified model with three generations and at least one adjoint Higgs field has been derived from string theory in the literature, and this model is phenomenologically unsatisfactory. Recently, in arXiv:1012.1690, we have constructed two new such E6 grand unified models in heterotic asymmetric orbifolds. Although our new models themselves cannot resolve the unsatisfactory point in the previous model, our discovery raises hopes that one can construct many other such models in this framework and find better models. Here, by giving partition functions explicitly, we explain the details of our construction. Utilizing the lattice engineering technique and the diagonal embedding method, we can construct models systematically. We hope that these techniques and the details of our construction will lead to more phenomenologically desirable models.

Doublet-Triplet Splitting in an SU(5) Grand Unification

We present a new solution to the doublet-triplet splitting problem which also works in a supersymmetric SU(5) grand unified theory and is testable at TeV-scale collider experiments. In our model, the SU(5) symmetry is broken through the Hosotani mechanism. Thanks to the phase nature of the Hosotani-breaking, the "missing VEV" can be realized even in an SU(5) model. A general and distinctive prediction of this solution is the existence of light adjoint chiral supermultiplets with masses of the supersymmetry breaking scale. Though these disturb the gauge coupling unification, it can be recovered keeping the unified gauge coupling constant perturbative by introducing additional vector-like particles, which may be also observed in the upcoming collider experiments.

E6 grand unified theory with three generations from heterotic string

We construct two more supersymmetric E6 grand unified models with three generations within the framework of Z12 asymmetric orbifold compactification of the heterotic string theory. Such an asymmetric orbifold is missing in the classification in the literature, which concludes that only one E6 model is possible. In both of the new models, an adjoint Higgs field is obtained in virtue of the diagonal embedding method. This method mods out the three E6 factors of an even self-dual momentum-lattice by a permutation symmetry. In order to realize the E6^3 even self-dual lattice, we utilize the lattice engineering technique. Among the eight possible orbifold actions in our setup, two lead to new E6 models. Though these models still share the unsatisfactory issues with the known one, our discovery raises hopes that excellent models that solve all the problems in the supersymmetric grand unified models will be found in this framework.

Grand Gauge-Higgs Unification

We propose a novel way to break grand unified gauge symmetries via the Hosotani mechanism in models that can accommodate chiral fermions. Adjoint scalar fields are realized through the so-called diagonal embedding method which is often used in the heterotic string theory. We calculate the one-loop effective potential of the adjoint scalar field in a five dimensional model compactified on an S^1/Z_2 orbifold, as an illustration. It turns out that the potential is basically the same as the one in an S^1 model, and thus the results in literatures, in addition to the chiral fermions, can be realized easily.

Minimal supersymmetric SU(5) model with nonrenormalizable operators: Seesaw mechanism and violation of flavour and CP

Flavour and CP violations that the neutrino-seesaw couplings of types I, II, and III induce radiatively in the soft massive parameters of the minimal supersymmetric SU(5) model, made realistic by nonrenormalizable operators, are analyzed. Effective couplings are used to parametrize the couplings of renormalizable operators and of the corrections that nonrenormalizable ones provide at the tree level. It is found that for a limited, but sufficient accuracy in the calculations of such violations, it is possible to extend the picture of effective couplings to the quantum level, all the way to the cutoff scale. The arbitrariness introduced by nonrenormalizable operators is analyzed in detail. It is shown that it can be drastically reduced in the Yukawa sector if the effective Yukawa couplings involving colored triplet Higgs bosons are tuned to suppress the decay rate of the proton. In the supersymmetry-breaking sector, the usual requirement of independence of flavour and field type for the mechanism of mediation of supersymmetry breaking is not sufficient to forbid arbitrary flavour and CP violations at the tree level. Special conditions to be added to this requirement, under which such violations can be avoided, are identified. Depending on how and whether these conditions are implemented, different phenomenological scenarios emerge. Flavour and CP violations of soft massive parameters induced by neutrino-seesaw couplings are discussed explicitly for the simplest scenario, in which no such violations are present at the tree level. Guidelines for studying them in other, less simple scenarios are given. Lists of all renormalization group equations needed for their calculations are provided for each of the three types of seesaw mechanism, at all energies between the TeV scale and Planck scale.

Gauge-Higgs Dark Matter

When the anti-periodic boundary condition is imposed for a bulk field in extradimensional theories, independently of the background metric, the lightest component in the anti-periodic field becomes stable and hence a good candidate for the dark matter in the effective 4D theory due to the remaining accidental discrete symmetry. Noting that in the gauge-Higgs unification scenario, introduction of anti-periodic fermions is well-motivated by a phenomenological reason, we investigate dark matter physics in the scenario. As an example, we consider a five-dimensional SO(5)$\timesU(1)_X$ gauge-Higgs unification model compactified on the $S^1/Z_2$ with the warped metric. Due to the structure of the gauge-Higgs unification, interactions between the dark matter particle and the Standard Model particles are largely controlled by the gauge symmetry, and hence the model has a strong predictive power for the dark matter physics. Evaluating the dark matter relic abundance, we identify a parameter region consistent with the current observations. Furthermore, we calculate the elastic scattering cross section between the dark matter particle and nucleon and find that a part of the parameter region is already excluded by the current experimental results for the direct dark matter search and most of the region will be explored in future experiments.

Tree-level unitarity in Gauge-Higgs Unification

We numerically estimate a scale $Λ_{uni}$ at which tree-level unitarity is violated in the $SO(5)\times U(1)_X$ gauge-Higgs unification model by evaluating amplitudes for scattering of the longitudinal W bosons. The scattering amplitudes take larger values in the warped spacetime than in the flat spacetime, and take maximal values when $θ_H=π/2$, where $θ_H$ is the Wilson line phase along the extra dimension. We take into account not only the elastic scattering but also possible inelastic scatterings in order to estimate $Λ_{\rm uni}$. We found that $Λ_{\rm uni}\simeq 1.3m_{KK}$ in the warped spacetime, and $Λ_{\rm uni}\simeq 140m_{KK}$ in the flat spacetime, where $m_{KK}$ is the Kaluza-Klein mass scale. The tree-level unitarity is violated at $O(1TeV)$ for $θ_H=π/2$ in the former case due to the vanishing WWH coupling.

iGUT: Grand Unified Theory on Interval

We investigate a construction of five-dimensional (5D) grand unified theories (GUTs) on an interval, which we call iGUTs. We analyze supersymmetric SO(10) iGUT as an example, where the gauge multiplet is spread over the 5D bulk. The SO(10) is directly reduced to the standard model gauge symmetry through the interval boundary conditions. Notice that this rank reduction is impossible in case of GUTs on orbifolds. Four scenarios are possible according to locations (bulk or brane) of Higgs and matter fields. We investigate the gauge-coupling unification, the proton decay, the SO(10) GUT features such as t-b-tau unification and so on in each scenario. We also comment on the flavor phenomenology.

Two-loop Calculation of Higgs Mass in Gauge-Higgs Unification: 5D Massless QED Compactified on S^1

We calculate the quantum corrections to the mass of the zero mode of the fifth component of the gauge field at two-loop level in a five dimensional massless QED compactified on S^1. We discuss in detail how the divergences are exactly canceled and the mass becomes finite. The key ingredients to obtain the result are the five dimensional gauge invariance and the Ward-Takahashi identity. We also evaluate the finite part of corrections.

Anomalous U(1) GUT

We have proposed a very attractive scenario of Grand Unified Theories (GUTs). It employs the supersymmetry (SUSY) and an anomalous U(1) symmetry whose anomaly is canceled via the Green-Schwarz mechanism. In this scenario, the doublet-triplet splitting problem is solved and the success of the gauge coupling unification in the minimal SU(5) GUT is naturally explained with sufficiently stable nucleon. Realistic fermion Yukawa matrices can also be realized simultaneously. In addition, a horizontal symmetry helps to solve the SUSY-flavor problem.

A general formula of the effective potential in 5D SU(N) gauge theory on orbifold

We show a general formula of the one loop effective potential of the 5D SU(N) gauge theory compactified on an orbifold, $S^1/Z_2$. The formula shows the case when there are fundamental, (anti-)symmetric tensor and adjoint representational bulk fields. Our calculation method is also applicable when there are bulk fields belonging to higher dimensional representations. The supersymmetric version of the effective potential with Scherk-Schwarz breaking can be obtained straightforwardly. We also show some examples of effective potentials in SU(3), SU(5) and SU(6) models with various boundary conditions, which are reproduced by our general formula.

Dynamical symmetry breaking in Gauge-Higgs unification of 5D ${\mathcal N}=1$ SUSY theory

We study the dynamical symmetry breaking in the gauge-Higgs unification of the 5D ${\mathcal N}=1$ SUSY theory, compactified on an orbifold, $S^1/Z_2$. This theory identifies Wilson line degrees of freedoms as ``Higgs doublets''. We consider $SU(3)_c \times SU(3)_W$ and SU(6) models, in which the gauge symmetries are reduced to $SU(3)_c \times SU(2)_L \times U(1)_Y$ and $SU(3)_c \times SU(2)_L \times U(1)_Y \times U(1)$, respectively, through the orbifolding boundary conditions. Quarks and leptons are bulk fields, so that Yukawa interactions can be derived from the 5D gauge interactions. We estimate the one loop effective potential of ``Higgs doublets'', and analyze the vacuum structures in these two models. We find that the effects of bulk quarks and leptons destabilize the suitable electro-weak vacuum. We show that the introduction of suitable numbers of extra bulk fields possessing the suitable representations can realize the appropriate electro-weak symmetry breaking.
