A high-throughput and data-mining approach to predict new rare-earth free permanent magnets

We present an application of a high-throughput search of new rare-earth free permanent magnets focusing on 3d-5d transition metal compounds. The search involved a part of the ICSD database (international crystallographic structural database), together with tailored search criteria and electronic structure calculations of magnetic properties. Our results suggest that it possible to find candidates for rare-earth free permanent magnets using a data-mining/data-filtering approach. The most promising candidates identified here are Pt$_2$FeNi, Pt$_2$FeCu, and W$_2$FeB$_2$. We suggest these materials to be a good platform for further investigations in the search of novel rare-earth free permanent magnets.

Testing several recent van der Waals density functionals for layered structures

Six recently developed exchanged functionals for pairing with different two versions of van der Waals density functionals (vdW-DF) are tested for weakly bonded solids. The test, using 26 layered weakly bonded compounds, benchmarks the lattice constants against experimental data and the interlayer binding energies against reference data from the random-phase approximation (RPA). The investigated functionals tend to give interlayer binding energies higher than the RPA benchmark, and the overall performance for lattice constants is good. The exchange functionals optB86b and cx13 paired with the original vdW-DF and the B86R functional paired with vdW-DF2 are found to give particularly good results for equilibrium geometries.

Electronic structure and magnetic properties of Mn, Co, and Ni-substitution of Fe in Fe4N

The magnetic properties of Mn, Co and Ni substituted Fe4N are calculated from first principles theory. It is found that the generalized gradient approximation reproduces with good accuracy the magnetic moment and equilibrium volume for the parent Fe4N structure, with the atomic moment largest for the Fe atom furthest away from the N atom (Fe I site), approaching a value of 3 muB/atom, whereas the Fe atom closer to the N atom (Fe II site) has a moment closer to that of bcc Fe. Substitution of Fe for Mn, Co or Ni, shows an intricate behavior in which the Mn substitution clearly favors the Fe II site, Ni favors substitution on the Fe I site and Co shows no strong preference for either lattice site. Ni and Co substitution results in a ferromagnetic coupling to the Fe atoms, whereas Mn couples antiferromagnetically on the Fe II site and ferromagnetically on the Fe I site. For all types of doping, the total magnetic moment is enhanced compared with Fe4N only in the energetically very unfavorable case of Mn doping at the Fe I site.

A van der Waals density functional for solids

The recent non-local correlation functional of Vydrov and van Voorhis[J. Chem. Phys. 133, 244103 (2010)] is investigated and two new versions of the functional are suggested as being appropriate for describing van der Waals interactions in solids. A refitting of the original functional is demonstrated to result in very accurate interlayer binding energies for weakly bonded layered solids. A VV10 functional based on the generalized gradient approximation by Armiento and Mattsson[Phys. Rev. B 72, 085108 (2005)], while performing slightly worse for interlayer binding is highly successful in describing the equilibrium geometries of both weakly bonded and close packed solids.

Order--disorder induced magnetic structures of FeMnP$_{0.75}$Si$_{0.25}$

We report on the synthesis and structural characterization of the magnetocaloric FeMnP$_{0.75}$Si$_{0.25}$ compound. Two types of samples (as quenched and annealed) were synthesized and characterized structurally and magnetically. We have found that minute changes in the degree of crystallographic order causes a large change in the magnetic properties. The annealed sample, with higher degree of order is antiferromagnetic with a zero net moment. The as-quenched sample has a net moment of 1.26 $μ_B$/f.u. and ferrimagnetic-like behavior. Theoretical calculations give rather large values for the Fe and Mn magnetic moments, both when occupied on the tetrahedral and pyramidal lattice site. The largest being the Mn moment for the pyramidal site reaches values as high as 2.8 $μ_B$/atom.
