Exact description of quantum stochastic models as quantum resistors

We study the transport properties of generic out-of-equilibrium quantum systems connected to fermionic reservoirs. We develop a new method, based on an expansion of the current in terms of the inverse system size and out of equilibrium formulations such as the Keldysh technique and the Meir-Wingreen formula. Our method allows a simple and compact derivation of the current for a large class of systems showing diffusive/ohmic behavior. In addition, we obtain exact solutions for a large class of quantum stochastic Hamiltonians (QSHs) with time and space dependent noise, using a self consistent Born diagrammatic method in the Keldysh representation. We show that these QSHs exhibit diffusive regimes which are encoded in the Keldysh component of the single particle Green's function. The exact solution for these QSHs models confirms the validity of our system size expansion ansatz, and its efficiency in capturing the transport properties. We consider in particular three fermionic models: i) a model with local dephasing ii) the quantum simple symmetric exclusion process model iii) a model with long-range stochastic hopping. For i) and ii) we compute the full temperature and dephasing dependence of the conductance of the system, both for two- and four-points measurements. Our solution gives access to the regime of finite temperature of the reservoirs which could not be obtained by previous approaches. For iii), we unveil a novel ballistic-to-diffusive transition governed by the range and the nature (quantum or classical) of the hopping. As a by-product, our approach equally describes the mean behavior of quantum systems under continuous measurement.

KPZ physics and phase transition in a classical single random walker under continuous measurement

We introduce and study a new model consisting of a single classical random walker undergoing continuous monitoring at rate $γ$ on a discrete lattice. Although such a continuous measurement cannot affect physical observables, it has a non-trivial effect on the probability distribution of the random walker. At small $γ$, we show analytically that the time-evolution of the latter can be mapped to the Stochastic Heat Equation (SHE). In this limit, the width of the log probability thus follows a Family-Vicsek scaling law, $N^αf(t/N^{α/β})$, with roughness and growth exponents corresponding to the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class, i.e $α^{\rm{1D}}_{\rm{KPZ}}=1/2$ and $β^{\rm{1D}}_{\rm{KPZ}}=1/3$ respectively. When $γ$ is increased outside this regime, we find numerically in 1D a crossover from the KPZ class to a new universality class characterized by exponents $α^{1\rm{D}}_{\text{M}}\approx 1$ and $β^{1\rm{D}}_{\text{M}}\approx 1.4$. In 3D, varying $γ$ beyond a critical value $γ^c_{\rm{M}}$ leads to a phase transition from a smooth phase that we identify as the Edwards-Wilkinson (EW) class to a new universality class with $α^{3\rm{D}}_{\text{M}}\approx1$.

Equilibration of quantum cat states

We study the equilibration properties of isolated ergodic quantum systems initially prepared in a cat state, i.e a macroscopic quantum superposition of states. Our main result consists in showing that, even though decoherence is at work in the mean, there exists a remnant of the initial quantum coherences visible in the strength of the fluctuations of the steady state. We back-up our analysis with numerical results obtained on the XXX spin chain with a random field along the z-axis in the ergodic regime and find good qualitative and quantitative agreement with the theory. We also present and discuss a framework where equilibrium quantities can be computed from general statistical ensembles without relying on microscopic details about the initial state, akin to the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis.

From stochastic spin chains to quantum Kardar-Parisi-Zhang dynamics

We introduce the asymmetric extension of the Quantum Symmetric Simple Exclusion Process which is a stochastic model of fermions on a lattice hopping with random amplitudes. In this setting, we analytically show that the time-integrated current of fermions defines a height field which exhibits a quantum non-linear stochastic Kardar-Parisi-Zhang dynamics. Similarly to classical simple exclusion processes, we further introduce the discrete Cole-Hopf (or Gärtner) transform of the height field which satisfies a quantum version of the Stochastic Heat Equation. Finally, we investigate the limit of the height field theory in the continuum under the celebrated Kardar-Parisi-Zhang scaling and the regime of almost-commuting quantum noise.

Universal fluctuations around typicality for quantum ergodic systems

For a quantum system in a macroscopically large volume $V$, prepared in a pure state and subject to maximally noisy or ergodic unitary dynamics, the reduced density matrix of any sub-system $v\ll V$ is almost surely totally mixed. We show that the fluctuations around this limiting value, evaluated according to the invariant measure of these unitary flows, are captured by the Gaussian unitary ensemble (GUE) of random matrix theory. An extension of this statement, applicable when the unitary transformations conserve the energy but are maximally noisy or ergodic on any energy shell, allows to decipher the fluctuations around canonical typicality. According to typicality, if the large system is prepared in a generic pure state in a given energy shell, the reduced density matrix of the sub-system is almost surely the canonical Gibbs state of that sub-system. We show that the fluctuations around the Gibbs state are encoded in a deformation of the GUE whose covariance is specified by the Gibbs state. Contact with the eigenstate thermalisation hypothesis (ETH) is discussed.

Colored Bin Packing

We study the Colored Bin Packing Problem: we are given a set of items where each item has a weight and color. We must pack the items in bins of uniform capacity such that no two items of the same color may be adjacent within in a bin. The goal is to perform this packing using the fewest number of bins. We consider a version of the problem where reordering is allowed. We first consider the zero-weight and unit weight versions of this problem, i.e. where the items have weight zero and one, respectively. We present linear time optimal algorithms for both versions.
