Source localisation in simple random walks

We consider the problem of locating the source (starting vertex) of a simple random walk, given a snapshot of the set of edges (or vertices) visited in the first $n$ steps. Considering lattices $\mathbb{Z}^d$, in dimensions $d \geq 5$, we show that the source can be identified (a) with probability bounded away from $0$ using one guess, and (b) with probability arbitrarily close to $1$ using a constant number of guesses. On the other hand, for dimensions $d \leq 2$, we show that one cannot locate the source with positive constant probability. Our arguments apply more generally to strongly transient and recurrent simple random walks on vertex-transitive graphs.

KKL theorem for the influence of a set of variables

Consider a Boolean function f on the n-dimensional hypercube, and a set of variables (indexed by) $S \subset \{1,2,\ldots,n\}.$ The coalition influence of the variables S on a function f is the probability that after a random assignment of variables not in S, the value of f is undetermined. In this paper, we study a complementary notion, which we call the joint influence: the probability that, after a random assignment of variables not in S, the value of f is dependent on all variables in S. We show that for an arbitrary fixed d, every Boolean function f on n variables admits a d-set of joint influence at least $\tfrac{1}{10} W^{\geq d}(f) (\frac{\log n}{n})^d$, where $W^{\geq d}(f)$ is the Fourier weight of f at degrees at least d. This result is a direct generalisation of the Kahn-Kalai-Linial theorem. Further, we give an example demonstrating essential sharpness of the above bound. In our study of the joint influence we consider another notion of multi-bit influence recently introduced by Tal.

Thresholds and expectation thresholds for larger p

Let $p_\mathrm{c}$ and $q_\mathrm{c}$ be the threshold and the expectation threshold, respectively, of an increasing family $\mathcal{F}$ of subsets of a finite set $X$, and let $l$ be the size of a largest minimal element of $\mathcal{F}$. Recently, Park and Pham proved the Kahn-Kalai conjecture, which says that $p_\mathrm{c} \leqslant K q_\mathrm{c} \log_2 l$ for some universal constant $K$. Here we slightly strengthen their result by showing that $p_\mathrm{c} \leqslant 1 - \mathrm{e}^{-K q_\mathrm{c} \log_2 l}$. The idea is to apply the Park-Pham Theorem to an appropriate `cloned' family $\mathcal{F}_k$, reducing the general case (of this and related results) to the case where the individual element probability $p$ is small.
