Noncommutative differential operators, Sobolev spaces and the centre of a category

We consider differential operators over a noncommutative algebra $A$ generated by vector fields. These are shown to form a unital associative algebra of differential operators, and act on $A$-modules $E$ with covariant derivative. We use the repeated differentials given in the paper to give a definition of noncommutative Sobolev space for modules with connection and Hermitian inner product. The tensor algebra of vector fields, with a modified bimodule structure and a bimodule connection, is shown to lie in the centre of the bimodule connection category ${}_A\mathcal{E}_A$, and in fact to be an algebra in the centre. The crossing natural transformation in the definition of the centre of the category is related to the action of the differential operators on bimodules with connection.

Monads and comonads in module categories

Let $A$ be a ring and $\M_A$ the category of $A$-modules. It is well known in module theory that for any $A $-bimodule $B$, $B$ is an $A$-ring if and only if the functor $-\otimes_A B: \M_A\to \M_A$ is a monad (or triple). Similarly, an $A $-bimodule $\C$ is an $A$-coring provided the functor $-\otimes_A\C:\M_A\to \M_A$ is a comonad (or cotriple). The related categories of modules (or algebras) of $-\otimes_A B$ and comodules (or coalgebras) of $-\otimes_A\C$ are well studied in the literature. On the other hand, the right adjoint endofunctors $\Hom_A(B,-)$ and $\Hom_A(\C,-)$ are a comonad and a monad, respectively, but the corresponding (co)module categories did not find much attention so far. The category of $\Hom_A(B,-)$-comodules is isomorphic to the category of $B$-modules, while the category of $\Hom_A(\C,-)$-modules (called $\C$-contramodules by Eilenberg and Moore) need not be equivalent to the category of $\C$-comodules. The purpose of this paper is to investigate these categories and their relationships based on some observations of the categorical background. This leads to a deeper understanding and characterisations of algebraic structures such as corings, bialgebras and Hopf algebras. For example, it turns out that the categories of $\C$-comodules and $\Hom_A(\C,-)$-modules are equivalent provided $\C$ is a coseparable coring. Furthermore, a bialgebra $H$ over a commutative ring $R$ is a Hopf algebra if and only if $\Hom_R(H-)$ is a Hopf bimonad on $\M_R$ and in this case the categories of $H$-Hopf modules and mixed $\Hom_R(H,-)$-bimodules are both equivalent to $\M_R$.

Formally smooth bimodules

The notion of a formally smooth bimodule is introduced and its basic properties are analyzed. In particular it is proven that a $B$-$A$ bimodule $M$ which is a generator left $B$-module is formally smooth if and only if the $M$-Hochschild dimension of $B$ is at most one. It is also shown that modules $M$ which are generators in the category $σ[M]$ of $M$-subgenerated modules provide natural examples of formally smooth bimodules.

Pre-torsors and equivalences

Properties of (most general) non-commutative torsors or A-B torsors are analysed. Starting with pre-torsors it is shown that they are equivalent to a certain class of Galois extensions of algebras by corings. It is shown that a class of faithfully flat pre-torsors induces equivalences between categories of comodules of associated corings. It is then proven that A-B torsors correspond to monoidal functors (and, under some additional conditions, equivalences) between categories of comodules of bialgebroids.

The bicategories of corings

To a B-coring and a (B,A)-bimodule that is finitely generated and projective as a right A-module an A-coring is associated. This new coring is termed a base ring extension of a coring by a module. We study how the properties of a bimodule such as separability and the Frobenius properties are reflected in the induced base ring extension coring. Any bimodule that is finitely generated and projective on one side, together with a map of corings over the same base ring, lead to the notion of a module-morphism, which extends the notion of a morphism of corings (over different base rings). A module-morphism of corings induces functors between the categories of comodules. These functors are termed pull-back and push-out functors respectively and thus relate categories of comodules of different corings. We study when the pull-back functor is fully faithful and when it is an equivalence. A generalised descent associated to a morphism of corings is introduced. We define a category of module-morphisms, and show that push-out functors are naturally isomorphic to each other if and only if the corresponding module-morphisms are mutually isomorphic. All these topics are studied within a unifying language of bicategories and the extensive use is made of interpretation of corings as comonads in the bicategory Bim of bimodules and module-morphisms as 1-cells in the associated bicategories of comonads in Bim.

The van Est spectral sequence for Hopf algebras

Various aspects of the de Rham cohomology of Hopf algebras are discussed. In particular, it is shown that the de Rham cohomology of an algebra with the differentiable coaction of a cosemisimple Hopf algebra with trivial 0-th cohomology group, reduces to the de Rham cohomology of (co)invariant forms. Spectral sequences are discussed and the van Est spectral sequence for Hopf algebras is introduced. A definition of Hopf-Lie algebra cohomology is also given.

The structure of corings: Induction functors, Maschke-type theorem, and Frobenius and Galois-type properties

Given a ring $A$ and an $A$-coring $\cC$ we study when the forgetful functor from the category of right $\cC$-comodules to the category of right $A$-modules and its right adjoint $-\otimes_A\cC$ are separable. We then proceed to study when the induction functor $-\otimes_A\cC$ is also the left adjoint of the forgetful functor. This question is closely related to the problem when $A\to {}_A{\rm Hom}(\cC,A)$ is a Frobenius extension. We introduce the notion of a Galois coring and analyse when the tensor functor over the subring of $A$ fixed under the coaction of $\cC$ is an equivalence. We also comment on possible dualisation of the notion of a coring.

Representation-theoretic derivation of the Temperley-Lieb-Martin algebras

Explicit expressions for the Temperley-Lieb-Martin algebras, i.e., the quotients of the Hecke algebra that admit only representations corresponding to Young diagrams with a given maximum number of columns (or rows), are obtained, making explicit use of the Hecke algebra representation theory. Similar techniques are used to construct the algebras whose representations do not contain rectangular subdiagrams of a given size.
