The biased odd cycle game

In this paper we consider biased Maker-Breaker games played on the edge set of a given graph GG. We prove that for every δ>0δ>0 and large enough nn, there exists a constant kk for which if δ(G)≥δnδ(G)\geq δn and χ(G)≥kχ(G)\geq k, then Maker can build an odd cycle in the (1:b)(1:b) game for b=O(nlog⁡2n)b=O(\frac{n}{\log^2 n}). We also consider the analogous game where Maker and Breaker claim vertices instead of edges. This is a special case of the following well known and notoriously difficult problem due to Duffus, Łuczak and Rödl: is it true that for any positive constants tt and bb, there exists an integer kk such that for every graph GG, if χ(G)≥kχ(G)\geq k, then Maker can build a graph which is not tt-colorable, in the (1:b)(1:b) Maker-Breaker game played on the vertices of GG?

LP-based Covering Games with Low Price of Anarchy

We present a new class of vertex cover and set cover games. The price of anarchy bounds match the best known constant factor approximation guarantees for the centralized optimization problems for linear and also for submodular costs -- in contrast to all previously studied covering games, where the price of anarchy cannot be bounded by a constant (e.g. [6, 7, 11, 5, 2]). In particular, we describe a vertex cover game with a price of anarchy of 2. The rules of the games capture the structure of the linear programming relaxations of the underlying optimization problems, and our bounds are established by analyzing these relaxations. Furthermore, for linear costs we exhibit linear time best response dynamics that converge to these almost optimal Nash equilibria. These dynamics mimic the classical greedy approximation algorithm of Bar-Yehuda and Even [3].

Monochromatic triangles in two-colored plane

We prove that for any partition of the plane into a closed set CC and an open set OO and for any configuration TT of three points, there is a translated and rotated copy of TT contained in CC or in OO. Apart from that, we consider partitions of the plane into two sets whose common boundary is a union of piecewise linear curves. We show that for any such partition and any configuration TT which is a vertex set of a non-equilateral triangle there is a copy of TT contained in the interior of one of the two partition classes. Furthermore, we give the characterization of these "polygonal" partitions that avoid copies of a given equilateral triple. These results support a conjecture of Erdos, Graham, Montgomery, Rothschild, Spencer and Straus, which states that every two-coloring of the plane contains a monochromatic copy of any nonequilateral triple of points; on the other hand, we disprove a stronger conjecture by the same authors, by providing non-trivial examples of two-colorings that avoid a given equilateral triple.
