Multi-reference many-body perturbation theory for nuclei II -- Ab initio study of neon isotopes via PGCM and IM-NCSM calculations

The neon isotopic chain displays a rich phenomenology, ranging from clustering in the ground-state of the self-conjugate doubly open-shell stable $^{20}$Ne isotope to the physics of the island of inversion around the neutron-rich $^{30}$Ne isotope. This second (i.e. Paper II) of the present series proposes an extensive ab initio study of neon isotopes based on two complementary many-body methods, i.e. the quasi-exact in-medium no-core shell model (IM-NCSM) and the projected generator coordinate method (PGCM) that is ideally suited to capturing strong static correlations associated with shape deformation and fluctuations. Calculations employ a state-of-the-art generation of chiral effective field theory Hamiltonians and evaluate the associated systematic uncertainties. In spite of missing so-called dynamical correlations, which can be added via the multi-reference perturbation theory proposed in the first paper (i.e. Paper I) of the present series, the PGCM is shown to be a suitable method to tackle the low-lying spectroscopy of complex nuclei. Still, describing the physics of the island of inversion constitutes a challenge that seems to require the inclusion of dynamical correlations. This is addressed in the third paper (i.e. Paper III) of the present series.

Multi-reference many-body perturbation theory for nuclei III -- Ab initio calculations at second order in PGCM-PT

In spite of missing dynamical correlations, the projected generator coordinate method (PGCM) was recently shown to be a suitable method to tackle the low-lying spectroscopy of complex nuclei. Still, describing absolute binding energies and reaching high accuracy eventually requires the inclusion of dynamical correlations on top of the PGCM. In this context, the present work discusses the first realistic results of a novel multi-reference perturbation theory (PGCM-PT) that can do so within a symmetry-conserving scheme for both ground and low-lying excited states. First, proof-of-principle calculations in a small ($e_{\mathrm{max}}=4$) model space demonstrate that exact binding energies of closed- (\nucl{O}{16}) and open-shell (\nucl{O}{18}, \nucl{Ne}{20}) nuclei are reproduced within $0.5-1.5\%$ at second order, i.e. through PGCM-PT(2). Moreover, profiting from the pre-processing of the Hamiltonian via multi-reference in-medium similarity renormalization group transformations, PGCM-PT(2) can reach converged values within smaller model spaces than with an unevolved Hamiltonian. Doing so, dynamical correlations captured by PGCM-PT(2) are shown to bring essential corrections to low-lying excitation energies that become too dilated at leading order, i.e., at the strict PGCM level. The present work is laying the foundations for a better understanding of the optimal way to grasp static and dynamical correlations in a consistent fashion, with the aim of accurately describing ground and excited states of complex nuclei via ab initio many-body methods.

Occupation numbers of spherical orbits in self-consistent beyond-mean-field methods

We present a method to compute the number of particles occupying spherical single-particle (SSP) levels within the energy density functional (EDF) framework. These SSP levels are defined for each nucleus by performing self-consistent mean-field calculations. The nuclear many-body states, in which the occupation numbers are evaluated, are obtained with a symmetry conserving configuration mixing (SCCM) method based on the Gogny EDF. The method allows a closer comparison between EDF and shell model with configuration mixing in large valence spaces (SM-CI) results, and can serve as a guidance to define physically sound valence spaces for SM-CI calculations. As a first application of the method, we analyze the onset of deformation in neutron-rich $N=40$ isotones and the role of the SSP levels around this harmonic oscillator magic number, with particular emphasis in the structure of $^{64}$Cr.

Octupole correlations in the nucleus $^{144}$Ba described with symmetry conserving configuration mixing calculations

We study the interplay of quadrupole and octupole degrees of freedom in the structure of the isotope $^{144}$Ba. A symmetry conserving configuration mixing method (SCCM) based on a Gogny energy density functional (EDF) has been used. The method includes particle number, parity and angular momentum restoration as well as axial quadrupole and octupole shape mixing within the generator coordinate method. Predictions both for excitation energies and electromagnetic transition probabilities are in good agreement with the most recent experimental data.

Systematic study of infrared energy corrections in truncated oscillator spaces

We study the convergence properties of nuclear binding energies and two-neutron separation energies obtained with self-consistent mean-field calculations based on the Hartree-Fock-Bogolyubov (HFB) method with Gogny-type effective interactions. Owing to lack of convergence in a truncated working basis, we employ and benchmark one of the recently proposed infrared energy correction techniques to extrapolate our results to the limit of an infinite model space. We also discuss its applicability to global calculations of nuclear masses.

Collective and Single-particle Motion in Beyond Mean Field Approaches

We present a novel nuclear energy density functional method to calculate spectroscopic properties of atomic nuclei. Intrinsic nuclear quadrupole deformations and rotational frequencies are considered simultaneously as the degrees of freedom within a symmetry conserving configuration mixing framework. The present method allows the study of nuclear states with collective and single-particle character. We calculate the fascinating structure of the semi-magic 44S nucleus as a first application of the method, obtaining an excellent quantitative agreement both with the available experimental data and with state-of-the-art shell model calculations.

Symmetry conserving configuration mixing method with cranked states

We present the first calculations of a symmetry conserving configuration mixing method (SCCM) using time-reversal symmetry breaking Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) states with the Gogny D1S interaction. The method includes particle number and tridimensional angular momentum symmetry restorations as well as configuration mixing within the generator coordinate method (GCM) framework. The nucleus $^{32}$Mg is chosen to show the performance and reliability of the calculations. Additionally, $0^{+}_{1}$, $2^{+}_{1}$ and $4^{+}_{1}$ states are computed for the magnesium isotopic chain, where a noticeable compression of the spectrum is obtained by including cranked states, leading to a very good agreement with the known experimental data.

Toward global beyond-mean-field calculations of nuclear masses and low-energy spectra

Self-consistent mean field (MF) and beyond-mean-field (BMF) calculations of masses, separation energies and $2^{+}_{1}$ excitation energies of even-even nuclei where experimental data is available are presented. The functionals used are based on the Gogny D1S and D1M parametrizations and the method includes beyond-mean-field corrections coming from both axial quadrupole shape mixing and symmetry restorations without assuming gaussian overlap approximations. A comparison between mean field, beyond-mean-field approaches and the experimental data is provided. Additionally, the convergence of the results and the possible reduction of the magic shell gaps by including BMF effects are also discussed.

Shape and pairing fluctuations effects on neutrinoless double beta decay nuclear matrix elements

Nuclear matrix elements (NME) for the most promising candidates to detect neutrinoless double beta decay have been computed with energy density functional methods including deformation and pairing fluctuations explicitly on the same footing. The method preserves particle number and angular momentum symmetries and can be applied to any decay without additional fine tunings. The finite range density dependent Gogny force is used in the calculations. An increase of $10\%-40\%$ in the NME with respect to the ones found without the inclusion of pairing fluctuations is obtained, reducing the predicted half-lives of these isotopes.

Structure of Krypton isotopes calculated with symmetry conserving configuration mixing methods

Shape transitions and shape coexistence in the $^{70-98}$Kr region are studied in a unified view with state-of-the-art beyond self-consistent mean field methods based on the Gogny D1S interaction. Beyond mean field effects are taken into account through the exact angular momentum and particle number restoration and the possibility of axial and non-axial shape mixing. The results of the low-lying properties of these isotopes are in good agreement with the experimental data when the triaxial degree of freedom is included. Shape transitions from axial-oblate ($^{70-72}$Kr) to triaxial-prolate ($^{74-78}$Kr) and from spherical-triaxial ($^{86-92}$Kr) to axial-oblate ($^{94-98}$Kr) ground states are obtained. Additionally, low-lying $0^{+}$ excited states and quasi-gamma bands are found showing the richness of the collective structure in this region.

Large amplitude pairing fluctuations in atomic nuclei

Pairing fluctuations are self-consistently incorporated on the same footing as the quadrupole deformations in present state of the art calculations including particle number and angular momentum conservation as well as configuration mixing. The approach is complemented by the use of the finite range density dependent Gogny force which, with a unique source for the particle-hole and particle-particle interactions, guarantees a self-consistent interplay in both channels. We have applied our formalism to study the role of the pairing degree of freedom in the description of the most relevant observables like spectra, transition probabilities, separation energies, etc. We find that the inclusion of pairing fluctuations mostly affects the description of excited states, depending on the excitation energy and the angular momentum. $E0$ transition probabilities experiment rather big changes while $E2$'s are less affected. Genuine pairing vibrations are thoroughly studied with the conclusion that deformations strongly inhibits their existence. These studies have been performed for a selection of nuclei: spherical, deformed and with different degree of collectivity.

Neutrinoless $ββ$ decay nuclear matrix elements in an isotopic chain

We analyze nuclear matrix elements (NME) of neutrinoless double beta decay calculated for the Cadmium isotopes. Energy density functional methods including beyond mean field effects such as symmetry restoration and shape mixing are used. Strong shell effects are found associated to the underlying nuclear structure of the initial and final nuclei. Furthermore, we show that NME for two-neutrino double beta decay evaluated in the closure approximation, $M^{2ν}_{\mathrm{cl}}$, display a constant proportionality with respect to the Gamow-Teller part of the neutrinoless NME, $M^{0ν}_{\mathrm{GT}}$. This opens the possibility of determining the $M^{0ν}_{\mathrm{GT}}$ matrix elements from $β^{\mp}$ Gamow-Teller strength functions. Finally, the interconnected role of deformation, pairing, configuration mixing and shell effects in the NMEs is discussed.

Configuration mixing description of the nucleus $^{44}$S

We study the structure of the neutron rich $^{44}$S isotope with modern configuration mixing methods based on the Gogny interaction including beyond-mean-field effects. Restoration of particle number and rotational symmetries are taken into account as well as shape mixing in the whole triaxial $(β_{2},γ)$ plane. We obtain a qualitative agreement between the calculated spectrum and the experimental data reported recently. Very extended collective wave functions in the $(β_2,γ)$ plane are found for the lowest states, corresponding to very flat potentials, indicating strong configuration mixing and supporting the weakening of the N=28 magic number.

Multiple shape coexistence in the nucleus $^{80}$Zr

We study the low-lying energy spectrum of the rp-process waiting point nucleus 80Zr with state-of-the-art beyond mean field methods with the Gogny D1S interaction. Symmetry restoration and configuration mixing of axial and triaxial shapes are included in the calculations. Five 0+ states corresponding to different nuclear shapes are obtained below 2.25 MeV and several rotational and γ- bands built upon them are identified. Nevertheless, these states do not modify the β-decay half-life having a negligible effect in the rp-process. A good agreement with the available experimental data is obtained.

Energy density functional study of nuclear matrix elements for neutrinoless $ββ$ decay

We present an extensive study of nuclear matrix elements (NME) for the neutrinoless double beta decay of the nuclei $^{48}$Ca, $^{76}$Ge, $^{82}$Se, $^{96}$Zr, $^{100}$Mo, $^{116}$Cd, $^{124}$Sn, $^{128}$Te, $^{130}$Te, $^{136}$Xe, and $^{150}$Nd based on state-of-the-art energy density functional methods using the Gogny D1S functional. Beyond mean-field effects are included within the generating coordinate method with particle number and angular momentum projection for both initial and final ground states. We obtain a rather constant value for the NME's around 4.7 with the exception of $^{48}$Ca and $^{150}$Nd, where smaller values are found. We analyze the role of deformation and pairing in the evaluation of the NME and present detailed results for the decay of $^{150}$Nd.

Triaxial Angular Momentum Projection and Configuration Mixing calculations with the Gogny force

We present the first implementation in the $(β,γ)$ plane of the generator coordinate method with full triaxial angular momentum and particle number projected wave functions using the Gogny force. Technical details about the performance of the method and the convergence of the results both in the symmetry restoration and the configuration mixing parts are discussed in detail. We apply the method to the study of $^{24}$Mg, the calculated energies of excited states as well as the transition probabilities are compared to the available experimental data showing a good overall agreement. In addition, we present the RVAMPIR approach which provides a good description of the ground and gamma bands in the absence of strong mixing.
