Black hole chemistry, the cosmological constant and the embedding tensor

We study black-hole thermodynamics in theories that contain dimensionful constants such as the cosmological constant or coupling constants in Wald's formalism. The most natural way to deal with these constants is to promote them to scalar fields introducing a (d-1)-form Lagrange multiplier that forces them to be constant on-shell. These (d-1)-form potentials provide a dual description of them and, in the context of superstring/supergravity theories, a higher-dimensional origin/explanation. In the context of gauged supergravity theories, all these constants can be collected in the embedding tensor. We show in an explicit 4-dimensional example that the embedding tensor can also be understood as a thermodynamical variable that occurs in the Smarr formula in a duality-invariant fashion. This establishes an interesting link between black-hole thermodynamics, gaugings and compactifications in the context of superstring/supergravity theories.

Non-extremal, $α'$-corrected black holes in 5-dimensional Heterotic Superstring Theory

We compute the first-order $α'$ corrections of the non-extremal Strominger-Vafa black hole and its non-supersymmetric counterparts in the framework of the Bergshoeff-de Roo formulation of the heterotic superstring effective action. The solution passes several tests: its extremal limit is the one found in an earlier publication and the effect of a T duality transformation on it is another solution of the same form with T dual charges. We compute the Hawking temperature and Wald entropy showing that they are related by the first law and Smarr formula. On the other hand, these two contain additional terms in which the dimensionful parameter $α'$ plays the role of thermodynamical variable.

Non-supersymmetric black holes with $α'$ corrections

We study extremal 5- and 4-dimensional black hole solutions of the Heterotic Superstring effective action at first order in $α'$ with, respectively, 3 and 4 charges of arbitrary signs. For a particular choice of the relative signs of these charges the solutions are supersymmetric, but other signs give rise to non-supersymmetric extremal black holes. Although at zeroth order all these solutions are formally identical, we show that the $α'$ corrections are drastically different depending on how we break supersymmetry. We provide fully analytic $\mathcal{O}(α')$ solutions and we compute their charges, masses and entropies and check that they are invariant under $α'$-corrected T-duality transformations. The masses of some of these black holes are corrected in a complicated way, but we show that the shift is always negative, in agreement with the Weak Gravity Conjecture. Our formula for the corrected entropy of the four-dimensional black holes generalizes previous results obtained from the entropy function method, as we consider a more general way in which supersymmetry can be broken.

A note on the hidden conformal structure of non-extremal black holes

We study, following Bertini et al. \cite{Bertini:2011ga}, the hidden conformal symmetry of the massless Klein-Gordon equation in the background of the general, charged, spherically symmetric, static black-hole solution of a class of d-dimensional Lagrangians which includes the relevant parts of the bosonic Lagrangian of any ungauged supergravity. We find that a hidden SL(2,\mathbb{R}) symmetry appears at the near event and Cauchy-horizon limit.

Stringy cosmic strings in matter coupled N=2, d=4 supergravity

We extend the system of ungauged N=2, d=4 supergravity coupled to vector multiplets and hypermultiplets with 2-form potentials. The maximal number of 2-form potentials that one may introduce is equal to the number of isometries of either the special Kaehler or quaternionic Kaehler sigma model. We show that the local supersymmetry algebra can be realized on the 2-form potentials. These 2-forms couple electrically to strings which we refer to as stringy cosmic strings. The 1/2 BPS bosonic world-sheet actions for these strings are constructed and we discuss the properties of the 1/2 BPS stringy cosmic string solutions.

Sl(2,R)-Duality Covariance of Killing Spinors in Axion-Dilaton Black Holes

Under $SL(2,R)$ electric-magnetic duality transformations the Bogomolnyi bound of dilaton-axion black holes is known to be invariant. In this paper we show that this invariance corresponds to the covariance of the $N=4$ supersymmetry transformation rules and their parameters. In particular this implies that Killing spinors transform covariantly into Killing spinors. As an example, we work out completely the case of the largest known family of axion-dilaton black holes which is $SL(2,R)$-invariant, finding the Killing spinors with the announced properties.

Electric-Magnetic Duality and Supersymmetry in Stringy Black Holes

We present a generalization of the $U(1)^{2}$ charged dilaton black holes family whose main feature is that both $U(1)$ fields have electric and magnetic charges, the axion field still being trivial. We show the supersymmetry of these solutions in the extreme case, in which the corresponding generalization of the Bogomolnyi bound is saturated and a naked singularity is on the verge of being visible to external observers. Then we study the action of a subset of the $SL(2,R)$ group of electric-magnetic duality rotations that generates a non-trivial axion field on those solutions. This group of transformations is an exact symmetry of the $N=4$ $d=4$ ungauged supergravity equations of motion. It has been argued recently that it could be an exact symmetry of the full effective string theory. The generalization of the Bogomolnyi bound is invariant under the full $SL(2,R)$ and the solutions explicitly rotated are shown to be supersymmetric if the originals are. We conjecture that any $SL(2,R)$ transformation will preserve supersymmetry.
