On well-posedness and algebraic type of the five-dimensional charged rotating black hole with two equal-magnitude angular momenta

We study various mathematical aspects of the charged rotating black hole with two equal-magnitude angular momenta in five dimensions. We introduce a coordinate system that is regular on the horizon and in which Einstein-Maxwell equations reduce to an autonomous system of ODEs. Employing Bondi and Kruskal-like coordinates, we analyze the geometric regularity of the black hole metric at infinity and the horizon, respectively, and the well-posedness of the corresponding boundary value problem. We also study the algebraic types of the electromagnetic and curvature tensors. While outside the horizon the electromagnetic and Ricci tensors are of type D, the Weyl tensor is algebraically general. The Weyl tensor simplifies to type~II on the horizon and type~D on the bifurcation sphere. These results imply inconsistency of the metric with the Kerr--Schild form with a geodesic Kerr-Schild vector. This feature is shared by the four-dimensional Kerr-Newman metric and the vacuum Myers-Perry or charged Schwarzschild-Tangherlini geometries in arbitrary dimension, but hence not by the black hole we have considered here.

Exact gyratons in higher and infinite derivative gravity

We study solutions describing spinning null sources called gyratons in generic theories of gravity with terms that are quadratic in curvature and contain an arbitrary number of covariant derivatives. In particular, we show that the properties of pp-waves of the algebraic type III allow for extreme simplification of the field equations. It turns out that the resulting differential equations are exactly solvable due to partial decoupling and linearity of the equations. This is demonstrated explicitly by finding axially symmetric gyraton solutions in Stelle's fourth derivative gravity and the non-local gravity with an infinite number of derivatives.

Type II universal spacetimes

We study type II universal metrics of the Lorentzian signature. These metrics simultaneously solve vacuum field equations of all theories of gravitation with the Lagrangian being a polynomial curvature invariant constructed from the metric, the Riemann tensor and its covariant derivatives of an arbitrary order. We provide examples of type II universal metrics for all composite number dimensions. On the other hand, we have no examples for prime number dimensions and we prove the non-existence of type II universal spacetimes in five dimensions. We also present type II vacuum solutions of selected classes of gravitational theories, such as Lovelock, quadratic and L(Riemann) gravities.

Extended Kerr-Schild spacetimes: General properties and some explicit examples

We study extended Kerr-Schild (xKS) spacetimes, i.e. an extension of the Kerr-Schild (KS) ansatz where, in addition to the null KS vector, a spacelike vector field appears in the metric. In contrast to the KS case, we obtain only a necessary condition under which the KS vector is geodetic. However, it is shown that this condition becomes sufficient if we appropriately restrict the geometry of the null KS and spacelike vector. It turns out that xKS spacetimes with a geodetic KS vector are of Weyl type I and the KS vector has the same optical properties in the full and background spacetimes. In the case of Kundt xKS spacetimes, the compatible Weyl types are further restricted and a few examples of such metrics are provided. The relation of pp -waves to the class of Kundt xKS spacetimes is briefly discussed. We also show that the CCLP black hole, as an example of an expanding xKS spacetime, is of Weyl type Ii, which specializes to type D in the uncharged or non-rotating limit, and that its optical matrix satisfies the optical constraint.

Exact Solutions of General Relativity and Quadratic Gravity in Arbitrary Dimension

In the first part of this thesis, Kerr-Schild metrics and extended Kerr-Schild metrics are analyzed in the context of higher dimensional general relativity. Employing the higher dimensional generalizations of the Newman-Penrose formalism and the algebraic classification of spacetimes based on the existence and multiplicity of Weyl aligned null directions, we establish various geometrical properties of the Kerr-Schild congruences, determine compatible Weyl types and in the expanding case discuss the presence of curvature singularities. We also present known exact solutions admitting these Kerr-Schild forms and construct some new ones using the Brinkmann warp product. In the second part, the influence of quantum corrections consisting of quadratic curvature invariants on the Einstein-Hilbert action is considered and exact vacuum solutions of these quadratic gravities are studied in arbitrary dimension. We investigate classes of Einstein spacetimes and spacetimes with a null radiation term in the Ricci tensor satisfying the vacuum field equations of quadratic gravity and provide examples of these metrics.

Kerr-Schild spacetimes with (A)dS background

General properties of Kerr-Schild spacetimes with (A)dS background in arbitrary dimension are studied. It is shown that the geodetic Kerr-Schild vector k is a multiple WAND of the spacetime. Einstein Kerr-Schild spacetimes with non-expanding k are shown to be of Weyl type N, while the expanding spacetimes are of type II or D. It is shown that this class of spacetimes obeys the optical constraint. This allows us to solve Sachs equation, determine r-dependence of boost weight zero components of the Weyl tensor and discuss curvature singularities.

Type III and N solutions to quadratic gravity

We study exact vacuum solutions to quadratic gravity (QG) of the Weyl types N and III. We show that in an arbitrary dimension all Einstein spacetimes of the Weyl type N with an appropriately chosen effective cosmological constant $Λ$ are exact solutions to QG and we refer to explicitly known metrics within this class. For type III Einstein spacetimes, an additional constraint follows from the field equations of QG and examples of spacetimes obeying such constraint are given. However, type III pp-waves do not satisfy this constraint and thus do not solve QG. For type N, we also study a wider class of spacetimes admitting a pure radiation term in the Ricci tensor. In contrast to the Einstein case, the field equations of generic QG determine optical properties of the geometry and restrict such exact solutions to the Kundt class. We provide examples of these metrics.
