Photometric IGM Tomography: Efficiently Mapping Quasar Light Echoes with Deep Narrow Band Imaging

In the standard picture, episodes of luminous quasar activity are directly related to supermassive black hole (SMBH) growth. The ionising radiation emitted over a quasar's lifetime alters the ionisation state of the surrounding intergalactic medium (IGM), enhancing the Ly$α$ forest transmission -- so-called proximity effect -- which can be observed in absorption spectra of background sources. Owing to the finite speed of light, the transverse direction of the proximity effect is sensitive to the quasar's radiative history, resulting in `light echoes' that encode the growth history of the SMBH on Myr-timescales. In this paper, we introduce a new technique to photometrically map this quasar light echoes using Ly$α$ forest tomography by using a carefully selected pair of narrow-band filters. A foreground narrow-band filter is used to measure Ly$α$ forest transmission along background galaxies selected as Ly$α$ emitters by a background narrow-band filter. This novel double narrow-band tomographic technique utilises the higher throughput and wider field of view of imaging over spectroscopy to efficiently reconstruct a two-dimensional map of Ly$α$ forest transmission around a quasar. We present a fully Bayesian framework to measure the luminous quasar lifetime of a SMBH from photometric IGM tomography, and examine the observational requirements. This new technique provides an efficient strategy to map a large area of the sky with a modest observing time and to identify interesting regions to be examined by further deep 3D follow-up spectroscopic Ly$α$ forest tomography.

A semisimple mod $p$ Langlands correspondence in families for $GL_2(\mathbb{Q}_p)$

This is the sequel to arXiv:2007.01364v1. Let $F$ be any local field with residue characteristic $p>0$, and $\mathcal{H}^{(1)}_{\overline{\mathbb{F}}_p}$ be the mod $p$ pro-$p$-Iwahori Hecke algebra of $\mathbf{GL_2}(F)$. In arXiv:2007.01364v1 we have constructed a parametrization of the $\mathcal{H}^{(1)}_{\overline{\mathbb{F}}_p}$-modules by certain $\widehat{\mathbf{GL_2}}(\overline{\mathbb{F}}_p)$-Satake parameters, together with an antispherical family of $\mathcal{H}^{(1)}_{\overline{\mathbb{F}}_p}$-modules. Here we let $F=\mathbb{Q}_p$ (and $p\geq 5$) and construct a morphism from $\widehat{\mathbf{GL_2}}(\overline{\mathbb{F}}_p)$-Satake parameters to $\widehat{\mathbf{GL_2}}(\overline{\mathbb{F}}_p)$-Langlands parameters. As a result, we get a version in families of Breuil's semisimple mod $p$ Langlands correspondence for $\mathbf{GL_2}(\mathbb{Q}_p)$ and of Paškūnas' parametrization of blocks of the category of mod $p$ locally admissible smooth representations of $\mathbf{GL_2}(\mathbb{Q}_p)$ having a central character. The formulation of these results is possible thanks to the Emerton-Gee moduli space of semisimple $\widehat{\mathbf{GL_2}}(\overline{\mathbb{F}}_p)$-representations of the Galois group ${\rm Gal}(\overline{\mathbb{Q}}_p/ \mathbb{Q}_p)$.

Intermediate extensions and crystalline distribution algebras

Let G be a connected split reductive group over a complete discrete valuation ring of mixed characteristic. We use the theory of intermediate extensions due to Abe-Caro and arithmetic Beilinson-Bernstein localization to classify irreducible modules over the crystalline distribution algebra of G in terms of overconvergent isocrystals on locally closed subspaces in the (formal) flag variety of G. We treat the case of SL(2) as an example.

The UV-bright Quasar Survey (UVQS): DR1

We present the first data release (DR1) from our UV-bright Quasar Survey (UVQS) for new $z \sim 1$ active galactic nuclei (AGN) across the sky. Using simple GALEX UV and WISE near-IR color selection criteria, we generated a list of 1450 primary candidates with $FUV < 18.5$ mag. We obtained discovery spectra, primarily on 3m-class telescopes, for 1040 of these candidates and confirmed 86% as AGN with redshifts generally at $z>0.5$. Including a small set of observed secondary candidates, we report the discovery of 217 AGN with $FUV < 18$ mag that had no previously reported spectroscopic redshift. These are excellent potential targets for UV spectroscopy before the end of the {\it Hubble Space Telescope} mission. The main data products are publicly released through the Mikulski Archive for Space Telescopes.

Effect of ensemble generalization on the highest-occupied Kohn-Sham eigenvalue

There are several approximations to the exchange-correlation functional in density-functional theory that accurately predict total energy-related properties of many-electron systems, such as binding energies, bond lengths, and crystal structures. Other approximations are designed to describe potential-related processes, such as charge transfer and photoemission. However, the development of a functional which can serve the two purposes simultaneously is a long-standing challenge. Trying to address it, we employ in the current work the ensemble generalization procedure proposed in Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 126403 (2013). Focusing on the prediction of the ionization potential via the highest occupied Kohn-Sham eigenvalue, we examine a variety of exchange-correlation approximations: the local spin-density approximation, semi-local generalized gradient approximations, and global and local hybrid functionals. Results for a test set of 26 diatomic molecules and single atoms are presented. We find that the aforementioned ensemble generalization systematically improves the prediction of the ionization potential, for various systems and exchange-correlation functionals, without compromising the accuracy of total energy-related properties. We specifically examine hybrid functionals. These depend on a parameter controlling the ratio of semi-local to non-local functional components. The ionization potential obtained with ensemble-generalized functionals is found to depend only weakly on the parameter value, contrary to common experience with non-generalized hybrids, thus eliminating one aspect of the so-called `parameter dilemma' of hybrid functionals.

Hecke algebras and affine flag varieties in characteristic p

Let G be a split semi-simple p-adic group and let H be its Iwahori-Hecke algebra with coefficients in the algebraic closure k of the finite field with p elements. Let F be the affine flag variety over k associated with G. We show, in the simply connected simple case, that a torus-equivariant K'-theory of F (with coefficients in k) admits an H-action by Demazure operators and that this provides a model for the regular representation of H.

Locally analytic representations of ${\rm GL}(2,L)$ via semistable models of ${\mathbb P}^1$

In this paper we study certain sheaves of $p$-adically complete rings of differential operators on semistable models of the projective line over the ring of integers in a finite extension $L$ of ${\mathbb Q}_p$. The global sections of these sheaves can be identified with (central reductions of) analytic distribution algebras of wide open congruence subgroups. It is shown that the global sections functor furnishes an equivalence between the categories of coherent module sheaves and finitely presented modules over the distribution algebras. Using work of M. Emerton, we then describe admissible representations of ${\rm GL}(2,L)$ in terms of sheaves on the projective limit of these formal schemes.

One-electron self-interaction and the asymptotics of the Kohn-Sham potential: an impaired relation

One-electron self-interaction and an incorrect asymptotic behavior of the Kohn-Sham exchange-correlation potential are among the most prominent limitations of many present-day density functionals. However, a one-electron self-interaction-free energy does not necessarily lead to the correct long-range potential. This is here shown explicitly for local hybrid functionals. Furthermore, carefully studying the ratio of the von Weizsäcker kinetic energy density to the (positive) Kohn-Sham kinetic energy density, $τ_\mathrm{W}/τ$, reveals that this ratio, which frequently serves as an iso-orbital indicator and is used to eliminate one-electron self-interaction effects in meta-generalized-gradient approximations and local hybrid functionals, can fail to approach its expected value in the vicinity of orbital nodal planes. This perspective article suggests that the nature and consequences of one-electron self-interaction and some of the strategies for its correction need to be reconsidered.

The companion candidate near Fomalhaut - a background neutron star?

The directly detected planetary mass companion candidate close to the young, nearby star Fomalhaut is a subject of intense discussion. While the detection of common proper motion led to the interpretation as Jovian-mass companion, later non-detections in the infrared raised doubts. Recent astrometric measurements indicate a belt crossing or highly eccentric orbit for the object, if a companion, making the planetary interpretation potentially even more problematic. In this study we discuss the possibility of Fomalhaut\,b being a background object with a high proper motion. By analysing the available photometric and astrometric data of the object, we show that they are fully consistent with a neutron star: Neutron stars are faint, hot (blue), and fast moving. Neutron stars with an effective temperature of the whole surface area being 112,000 K to 126,500 K (with small to negligible extinction) at a distance of roughly 11 pc (best fit) would be consistent with all observables, namely with the photometric detections in the optical, with the upper limits in the infrared and X-rays, as well as with the astrometry (consistent with a distances of 11 pc or more and high proper motion as typical for neutron stars) as well as with non-detection of pulsation (not beamed). We consider the probability of finding an unrelated object or even a neutron star nearby and mostly co-aligned in proper motion with Fomalhaut A and come to the conclusion that this is definitely well possible.

A self-interaction-free local hybrid functional: Accurate binding energies vis-à-vis accurate ionization potentials from Kohn-Sham eigenvalues

We present and test a new approximation for the exchange-correlation (xc) energy of Kohn-Sham density functional theory. It combines exact exchange with a compatible non-local correlation functional. The functional is by construction free of one-electron self-interaction, respects constraints derived from uniform coordinate scaling, and has the correct asymptotic behavior of the xc energy density. It contains one parameter that is not determined ab initio. We investigate whether it is possible to construct a functional that yields accurate binding energies and affords other advantages, specifically Kohn-Sham eigenvalues that reliably reflect ionization potentials. Tests for a set of atoms and small molecules show that within our local-hybrid form accurate binding energies can be achieved by proper optimization of the free parameter in our functional, along with an improvement in dissociation energy curves and in Kohn-Sham eigenvalues. However, the correspondence of the latter to experimental ionization potentials is not yet satisfactory, and if we choose to optimize their prediction, a rather different value of the functional's parameter is obtained. We put this finding in a larger context by discussing similar observations for other functionals and possible directions for further functional development that our findings suggest.

Arithmetic differential operators on a semistable model of ${\mathbb P}^1$

In this paper we study sheaves of logarithmic arithmetic differential operators on a particular semistable model of the projective line. The main result here is that the first cohomology group of these sheaves is non-torsion. We also consider a refinement of the order filtration on the sheaf of level zero (before taking the p-adic completion). The associated graded sheaf, which we explicitly determine, explains to some extent the occurrence of the cohomology classes in degree one.

Dimensions of some locally analytic representations

Let $G$ be the group of points of a split reductive group over a finite extension of ${\mathbb Q}_p$. In this paper, we compute the dimensions of certain classes of locally analytic $G$-representations. This includes principal series representations and certain representations coming from homogeneous line bundles on $p$-adic symmetric spaces. As an application, we compute the dimensions in Colmez' unitary principal series of ${\rm GL}_2({\mathbb Q}_p)$.

Integral models of P^1 and analytic distribution algebras for GL_2

In the first part of the paper we show that the ring of global sections of arithmetic differential operators on the formal projective line over Zp is isomorphic to the analytic distribution algebra of the 'wide open' congruence subgroup of level zero of GL(2,Zp). In the second part we study rings of logarithmic differential operators on semistable integral models of the projective line over Zp and we relate these to analytic distribution algebra of 'wide open' congruence subgroups of higher level.

On locally analytic Beilinson-Bernstein localization and the canonical dimension

Let G be a connected split reductive group over a p-adic field. In the first part of the paper we prove, under certain assumptions on G and the prime p, a localization theorem of Beilinson-Bernstein type for admissible locally analytic representations of principal congruence subgroups in the rational points of G. In doing so we take up and extend some recent methods and results of Ardakov-Wadsley on completed universal enveloping algebras to a locally analytic setting. As an application we prove, in the second part of the paper, a locally analytic version of Smith's theorem on the canonical dimension. This paper is in final form, is an expanded version of the former preprint 'On the dimension of locally analytic representations of semisimple p-adic groups' and has appeared in Mathematische Zeitschrift.

Picard groups in $p$-adic Fourier theory

Let $L$ be a proper finite extension of the field of $p$-adic numbers and let $o\subset L$ be its integers, viewed as an abelian locally $L$-analytic group. Let $\hat{o}$ be the rigid analytic group variety parametrizing the locally analytic characters of o. We study the Picard group and the Grothendieck group of this variety. This preprint is in final version, replaces the former preprint 'Vector bundles over analytic character varieties' and appears in Manuscripta Mathematica.

Verma modules over p-adic Arens-Michael envelopes of reductive Lie algebras

Let K be a locally compact nonarchimedean field, g a split reductive Lie algebra over K and U(g) its universal enveloping algebra. We study the category C_g of coadmissible modules over the nonarchimedean Arens-Michael envelope of U(g). Let p be a parabolic subalgebra of g. The main result identifies a certain explicitly given highest weight category inside C_g with the classical parabolic BGG category of g relative to p. This paper is in final form, replaces and expands the former preprint 'BGG reciprocity for p-adic Arens-Michael envelopes of semisimple Lie algebras' and appears in Journal of Algebra.

Analytic vectors in continuous p-adic representations

Given a compact p-adic Lie group G over a finite unramified extension L/Q_p let G_0 be the product over all Galois conjugates of G. We construct an exact and faithful functor from admissible G-Banach space representations to admissible locally L-analytic G_0-representations that coincides with passage to analytic vectors in case L=Q_p. On the other hand, we study the functor "passage to analytic vectors" and its derived functors over general basefields. As an application we determine the higher analytic vectors in certain locally analytic induced representations.

Locally analytic representations and sheaves on the Bruhat-Tits building

Let L be a finite field extension of Q_p and let G be the group of L-rational points of a split connected reductive group over L. We view G as a locally L-analytic group with Lie algebra g. We define a functor from admissible locally analytic G-representations with prescribed infinitesimal character to a category of equivariant sheaves on the Bruhat-Tits building of G. For smooth representations, the corresponding sheaves are closely related to the sheaves constructed by S. Schneider and U. Stuhler. The functor is also compatible, in a certain sense, with the localization of g-modules on the flag variety by A. Beilinson and J. Bernstein.

Stable flatness of nonarchimedean hyperenveloping algebras

Let L be a p-adic local field and g a finite dimensional Lie algebra over L. We show that its hyperenveloping algebra F(g) is a stably flat completion of its universal enveloping algebra. As a consequence the relative cohomology for the locally convex algebra F(g) coincides with the underlying Lie algebra cohomology. Final version. Some minor items corrected. Appeared in Journal of Algebra (2010).
