Novel Nussbaum-Type Function based Safe Adaptive Distributed Consensus Control with Arbitrary Unknown Control Direction

Existing Nussbaum function based methods on the consensus of multi-agent systems require (partial) identical unknown control directions of all agents and cause dangerous dramatic control shocks. This paper develops a novel saturated Nussbaum function to relax such limitations and proposes a Nussbaum function based control scheme for the consensus problem of multi-agent systems with arbitrary non-identical unknown control directions and safe control progress. First, a novel type of the Nussbaum function with different frequencies is proposed in the form of saturated time-elongation functions, which provides a more smooth and safer transient performance of the control progress. Furthermore, the novel Nussbaum function is employed to design distributed adaptive control algorithms for linearly parameterized multi-agent systems to achieve average consensus cooperatively without dramatic control shocks. Then, under the undirected connected communication topology, all the signals of the closed-loop systems are proved to be bounded and asymptotically convergent. Finally, two comparative numerical simulation examples are carried out to verify the effectiveness and the superiority of the proposed approach with smaller control shock amplitudes than traditional Nussbaum methods.

Optimal Tracking Control for Unknown Linear Systems with Finite-Time Parameter Estimation

The optimal control input for linear systems can be solved from algebraic Riccati equation (ARE), from which it remains questionable to get the form of the exact solution. In engineering, the acceptable numerical solutions of ARE can be found by iteration or optimization. Recently, the gradient descent based numerical solutions has been proven effective to approximate the optimal ones. This paper introduces this method to tracking problem for heterogeneous linear systems. Differently, the parameters in the dynamics of the linear systems are all assumed to be unknown, which is intractable since the gradient as well as the allowable initialization needs the prior knowledge of system dynamics. To solve this problem, the method named dynamic regressor extension and mix (DREM) is improved to estimate the parameter matrices in finite time. Besides, a discounted factor is introduced to ensure the existence of optimal solutions for heterogeneous systems. Two simulation experiments are given to illustrate the effectiveness.

Robust Adaptive Safety-Critical Control for Unknown Systems with Finite-Time Element-Wise Parameter Estimation

Safety is always one of the most critical principles for a system to be controlled. This paper investigates a safety-critical control scheme for unknown structured systems by using the control barrier function (CBF) method. Benefited from the dynamic regressor extension and mixing (DREM), an extended element-wise parameter identification law is utilized to dismiss the uncertainty. On the one hand, it is shown that the proposed control scheme can always guarantee the safety in the identification process with noised signal injection excitation, which was not considered in the previous study. On the other hand, the element-wise estimation process in DREM can minimize conservatism of the safe adaptive process compared to other existing adaptive CBF algorithms. The stability as well as the forward invariance of the presented safe control-estimation scheme is proved. Furthermore, the robustness of the scheme under bounded disturbances is analyzed, where a robust CBF with modest conditions is used to ensure safety. The framework is illustrated by simulations on adaptive cruise control, where the slope resistance of the following vehicle is robustly estimated in finite time against small disturbances and the potential crash risk is avoided by the proposed safe control scheme.

Towards Safe and Efficient Swarm-Human Collaboration: A Hierarchical Multi-Agent Pickup and Delivery framework

The multi-Agent Pickup and Delivery (MAPD) problem is crucial in the realm of Intelligent Storage Systems (ISSs), where multiple robots are assigned with time-varying, heterogeneous, and potentially uncertain tasks. When it comes to Human-Swarm Hybrid System ((HS)$_2$), robots and human workers will accomplish the MAPD tasks in collaboration. Herein, we propose a Human-Swarm Hybrid System Pickup and Delivery ((HS)$_2$PD) framework, which is predominant in future ISSs. A two-layer decision framework based on the prediction horizon window is established in light of the unpredictability of human behavior and the dynamic changes of tasks. The first layer is a two-level programming problem to solve the problems of mode assignment and TA. The second layer is devoted to the exact path of each agent via solving mixed-integer programming (MIP) problems. An integrated algorithm for the (HS)$_2$PD problem is summarized. The practicality and validity of the above algorithm are illustrated via a numerical simulation example towards (HS)$_2$PD tasks.

Resilient Path Planning of UAVs against Covert Attacks on UWB Sensors

In this letter, a resilient path planning scheme is proposed to navigate a UAV to the planned (nominal) destination with minimum energy-consumption in the presence of a smart attacker. The UAV is equipped with two sensors, a GPS sensor, which is vulnerable to the spoofing attacker, and a well-functioning Ultra-Wideband (UWB) sensor, which is possible to be fooled. We show that a covert attacker can significantly deviate the UAV's path by simultaneously corrupting the GPS signals and forging control inputs without being detected by the UWB sensor. The prerequisite for the attack occurrence is first discussed. Based on this prerequisite, the optimal attack scheme is proposed, which maximizes the deviation between the nominal destination and the real one. Correspondingly, an energy-efficient and resilient navigation scheme based on Pontryagin's maximum principle \cite{gelfand2000calculus} is formulated, which depresses the above covert attacker effectively. To sum up, this problem can be seen as a Stackelberg game \cite{bacsar1998dynamic} between a secure path planner (defender) and a covert attacker. The effectiveness and practicality of our theoretical results are illustrated via two series of simulation examples and a UAV experiment.

Spatiotemporal accessible solitons in fractional dimensions

We report solutions for solitons of the "accessible" type in globally nonlocal nonlinear media of fractional dimension (FD), viz., for self-trapped modes in the space of effective dimension $2<D\le3$ with harmonic-oscillator potential whose strength is proportional to the total power of the wave field. The solutions are categorized by a combination of radial, orbital and azimuthal quantum numbers $(n,l,m)$. They feature coaxial sets of vortical and necklace-shaped rings of different orders, and can be exactly written in terms of special functions that include Gegenbauer polynomials, associated Laguerre polynomials, and associated Legendre functions. The validity of these solutions is verified by direct simulation. The model can be realized in various physical settings emulated by FD spaces; in particular, it applies to excitons trapped in quantum wells.

Off-policy reinforcement learning for $ H_\infty $ control design

The $H_\infty$ control design problem is considered for nonlinear systems with unknown internal system model. It is known that the nonlinear $ H_\infty $ control problem can be transformed into solving the so-called Hamilton-Jacobi-Isaacs (HJI) equation, which is a nonlinear partial differential equation that is generally impossible to be solved analytically. Even worse, model-based approaches cannot be used for approximately solving HJI equation, when the accurate system model is unavailable or costly to obtain in practice. To overcome these difficulties, an off-policy reinforcement leaning (RL) method is introduced to learn the solution of HJI equation from real system data instead of mathematical system model, and its convergence is proved. In the off-policy RL method, the system data can be generated with arbitrary policies rather than the evaluating policy, which is extremely important and promising for practical systems. For implementation purpose, a neural network (NN) based actor-critic structure is employed and a least-square NN weight update algorithm is derived based on the method of weighted residuals. Finally, the developed NN-based off-policy RL method is tested on a linear F16 aircraft plant, and further applied to a rotational/translational actuator system.

Q-learning for Optimal Control of Continuous-time Systems

In this paper, two Q-learning (QL) methods are proposed and their convergence theories are established for addressing the model-free optimal control problem of general nonlinear continuous-time systems. By introducing the Q-function for continuous-time systems, policy iteration based QL (PIQL) and value iteration based QL (VIQL) algorithms are proposed for learning the optimal control policy from real system data rather than using mathematical system model. It is proved that both PIQL and VIQL methods generate a nonincreasing Q-function sequence, which converges to the optimal Q-function. For implementation of the QL algorithms, the method of weighted residuals is applied to derived the parameters update rule. The developed PIQL and VIQL algorithms are essentially off-policy reinforcement learning approachs, where the system data can be collected arbitrary and thus the exploration ability is increased. With the data collected from the real system, the QL methods learn the optimal control policy offline, and then the convergent control policy will be employed to real system. The effectiveness of the developed QL algorithms are verified through computer simulation.

Data-based approximate policy iteration for nonlinear continuous-time optimal control design

This paper addresses the model-free nonlinear optimal problem with generalized cost functional, and a data-based reinforcement learning technique is developed. It is known that the nonlinear optimal control problem relies on the solution of the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equation, which is a nonlinear partial differential equation that is generally impossible to be solved analytically. Even worse, most of practical systems are too complicated to establish their accurate mathematical model. To overcome these difficulties, we propose a data-based approximate policy iteration (API) method by using real system data rather than system model. Firstly, a model-free policy iteration algorithm is derived for constrained optimal control problem and its convergence is proved, which can learn the solution of HJB equation and optimal control policy without requiring any knowledge of system mathematical model. The implementation of the algorithm is based on the thought of actor-critic structure, where actor and critic neural networks (NNs) are employed to approximate the control policy and cost function, respectively. To update the weights of actor and critic NNs, a least-square approach is developed based on the method of weighted residuals. The whole data-based API method includes two parts, where the first part is implemented online to collect real system information, and the second part is conducting offline policy iteration to learn the solution of HJB equation and the control policy. Then, the data-based API algorithm is simplified for solving unconstrained optimal control problem of nonlinear and linear systems. Finally, we test the efficiency of the data-based API control design method on a simple nonlinear system, and further apply it to a rotational/translational actuator system. The simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

A multiple exp-function method for nonlinear differential equations and its application

A multiple exp-function method to exact multiple wave solutions of nonlinear partial differential equations is proposed. The method is oriented towards ease of use and capability of computer algebra systems, and provides a direct and systematical solution procedure which generalizes Hirota's perturbation scheme. With help of Maple, an application of the approach to the $3+1$ dimensional potential-Yu-Toda-Sasa-Fukuyama equation yields exact explicit 1-wave and 2-wave and 3-wave solutions, which include 1-soliton, 2-soliton and 3-soliton type solutions. Two cases with specific values of the involved parameters are plotted for each of 2-wave and 3-wave solutions.
