Analytical solution to the Poisson-Nernst-Planck equations for the charging of a long electrolyte-filled slit pore

We study the charging dynamics of a long electrolyte-filled slit pore in response to a suddenly applied potential. In particular, we analytically solve the Poisson-Nernst-Planck (PNP) equations for a pore for which $λ_D\ll H\ll L$, with $λ_D$ the Debye length and $H$ and $L$ the pore's width and length. For small applied potentials, we find the time-dependent potential drop between the pore's surface and its center to be in complete agreement with a prediction of the celebrated transmission line model. For moderate to high applied potentials, prior numerical work showed that charging slows down at late times; Our analytical model reproduces and explains such biexponential charge buildup.

Branching random graph model of rough surfaces describes thermal properties of the effective molecular potential

Fluid properties near rough surfaces are crucial in describing fundamental surface phenomena and modern industrial material design implementations. One of the most powerful approaches to model real rough materials is based on the surface representation in terms of random geometry. Understanding the influence of random solid geometry on the low-temperature fluid thermodynamics is a cutting edge problem. Therefore this work extends recent studies bypassing high-temperature expansion and small heterogeneity scale. We introduce random branching trees whose topology reflects the hierarchical properties of a random solid geometry. This mathematical representation allows us to obtain averaged free energy using a statistical model of virtual clusters interacting through random ultrametric pairwise potentials. Our results demonstrate that a significant impact to fluid-solid interface energy is induced by the hierarchical structure of random geometry at low temperature. These calculations coincide with direct Monte Carlo simulations. Due to the study's interdisciplinary nature, the developed approach can be applied to a wide range of quenched disorder systems on random graphs.

Disjoining pressure oscillations causing height discretization in graphene nanobubbles

Recent experiments and computer simulations observe various geometrical formations of nanobubbles in van der Waals heterostructures. Among the well studied dome and tent geometries, there is yet least understood pancake graphene nanobubbles (GNB). This more exotic form exhibits discrete values of vertical sizes around just a few diameters of the molecules trapped inside the GNBs. We develop a model based on the membrane theory and confined fluids thermodynamics. Our approach describes the equilibrium properties of such flat GNBs. We show that discrete pancake geometry is the result of disjoining pressure induced by the trapped fluid inside GNB. The calculated total energy defines a discrete series of the metastable states with the pancake heights, which are multiple to molecular diameter. We observe that the value and the distribution of the total energy minima crucially depend on the temperature. The energy barriers between metastable states decrease as the temperature becomes larger. Also, we demonstrate that the pancake forms are favorable in the cases of sufficiently low membrane-substrate adhesion energy and the small number of trapped molecules. These properties are in agreement with the published simulations and experiments. The numerical comparison of our result with molecular dynamics results additionally shows the adequacy of the proposed model.

Analytical expression for radial distribution function of hard sphere system: density derivative and application to perturbation theories

Model of hard sphere system is important part of modern theories of liquids. Radial distribution function of hard sphere fluid represented in form of explicit analytical expression allows to obtain thermodynamic potentials in analytical form, which is very helpful for further analysis and applications. A new analytical expression of radial distribution function of hard sphere fluid is developed. The density derivative of the radial distribution function and the first two terms of Barker-Henderson perturbation theory are derived as analytical expressions. The obtained results agree well with published simulation data. These results have important implications for real fluid modeling using density functional theory and perturbation theories.
