Ephemeral Islands, Plunging Quantum Extremal Surfaces and BCFT channels

We consider entanglement entropies of finite spatial intervals in Minkowski radiation baths coupled to the eternal black hole in JT gravity, and the related problem involving free fermion BCFT in the thermofield double state. We show that the non-monotonic entropy evolution in the black hole problem precisely matches that of the free fermion theory in a high temperature limit, and the results have the form expected for CFTs with quasiparticle description. Both exhibit rich behaviour that involves at intermediate times, an entropy saddle with an island in the former case, and in the latter a special class of disconnected OPE channels. The quantum extremal surfaces start inside the horizon, but can emerge from and plunge back inside as time evolves, accompanied by a characteristic dip in the entropy also seen in the free fermion BCFT. Finally an entropy equilibrium is reached with a no-island saddle.

Grey-body Factors, Irreversibility and Multiple Island Saddles

We consider the effect of grey-body factors on the entanglement island prescription for computing the entropy of an arbitrary subset of the Hawking radiation of an evaporating black hole. When there is a non-trivial grey-body factor, the modes reflected back into the black hole affect the position of the quantum extremal surfaces at a subleading level with respect to the scrambling time. The grey-body factor allows us to analyse the role of irreversibility in the evaporation. In particular, we show that irreversibility allows multiple saddles to dominate the entropy, rather than just two as expected on the basis of Page's theorem. We show that these multiple saddles can be derived from a generalization of Page's theorem that involves a nested temporal sequence of unitary averages. We then consider how irreversibility affects the monogamy entanglement problem.

Classical Spectral Curve of the AdS_5 x S^5 Lambda Superstring

The classical spectral curve for the worldsheet theory of the AdS_5 x S^5 lambda superstring is constructed. The lambda string is interpreted as a regularized, non-abelian T dual of the AdS_5 x S^5 superstring with respect to full PSU(2,2|4) symmetry. The form of the curve is identified as the semi-classical limit of a set of Bethe ansatz equations for an XXZ type spin chain for the supergroup PSU(2,2|4) in contrast to the string in AdS_5 x S^5 which is XXX type.

Islands and Page Curves for Evaporating Black Holes in JT Gravity

The effect of a CFT shockwave on the entanglement structure of an eternal black hole in Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity, that is in thermal equilibrium with a thermal bath, is considered. The shockwave carries energy and entropy into the black hole and heats the black hole up leading to evaporation and the eventual recovery of equilibrium. We find an analytical description of the entire relaxational process within the semiclassical high temperature regime. If the shockwave is inserted around the Page time then several scenarios are possible depending on the parameters. The Page time can be delayed or hastened and there can be more than one transition. The final entropy saddle has a quantum extremal surface that generically starts inside the horizon but at some later time moves outside. In general, increased shockwave energy and slow evaporation rate favour the extremal surface to be inside the horizon. The shockwave also disrupts the scrambling properties of the black hole. The same analysis is then applied to a shockwave inserted into the extremal black hole with similar conclusions.

Chaos bound in Bershadsky-Polyakov theory

We consider two dimensional conformal field theory (CFT) with large central charge c in an excited state obtained by the insertion of an operator Φwith large dimension Δ_Φ~ O(c) at spatial infinities in the thermal state. We argue that correlation functions of light operators in such a state can be viewed as thermal correlators with a rescaled effective temperature. The effective temperature controls the growth of out-of-time order (OTO) correlators and results in a violation of the universal upper bound on the associated Lyapunov exponent when Δ_Φ<0 and the CFT is nonunitary. We present a specific realization of this situation in the holographic Chern-Simons formulation of a CFT with {W}^{(2)}_3 symmetry also known as the Bershadsky-Polyakov algebra. We examine the precise correspondence between the semiclassical (large-c) representations of this algebra and the Chern-Simons formulation, and infer that the holographic CFT possesses a discretuum of degenerate ground states with negative conformal dimension Δ_Φ=- c/8. Using the Wilson line prescription to compute entanglement entropy and OTO correlators in the holographic CFT undergoing a local quench, we find the Lyapunov exponent λ_L = 4π/ β, violating the universal chaos bound.

Causality Violation, Gravitational Shockwaves and UV Completion

The effective actions describing the low-energy dynamics of QFTs involving gravity generically exhibit causality violations. These may take the form of superluminal propagation or Shapiro time advances and allow the construction of "time machines", i.e. spacetimes admitting closed non-spacelike curves. Here, we discuss critically whether such causality violations may be used as a criterion to identify unphysical effective actions or whether, and how, causality problems may be resolved by embedding the action in a fundamental, UV complete QFT. We study in detail the case of photon scattering in an Aichelburg-Sexl gravitational shockwave background and calculate the phase shifts in QED for all energies, demonstrating their smooth interpolation from the causality-violating effective action values at low-energy to their manifestly causal high-energy limits. At low energies, these phase shifts may be interpreted as backwards-in-time coordinate jumps as the photon encounters the shock wavefront, and we illustrate how the resulting causality problems emerge and are resolved in a two-shockwave time machine scenario. The implications of our results for ultra-high (Planck) energy scattering, in which graviton exchange is modelled by the shockwave background, are highlighted.

Causality, Renormalizability and Ultra-High Energy Gravitational Scattering

The amplitude A(s,t) for ultra-high energy scattering can be found in the leading eikonal approximation by considering propagation in an Aichelburg-Sexl gravitational shockwave background. Loop corrections in the QFT describing the scattered particles are encoded for energies below the Planck scale in an effective action which in general exhibits causality violation and Shapiro time advances. In this paper, we use Penrose limit techniques to calculate the full energy dependence of the scattering phase shift Theta_scat(hat_s},, where the single variable hat_s = Gs/m^2 b^(d-2) contains both the CM energy s and impact parameter b, for a range of scalar QFTs in d dimensions with different renormalizability properties. We evaluate the high-energy limit of Theta_scat(hat_s) and show in detail how causality is related to the existence of a well-defined UV completion. Similarities with graviton scattering and the corresponding resolution of causality violation in the effective action by string theory are briefly discussed.

Beta Function of k Deformed AdS_5 x S^5 String Theory

We calculate the one loop beta function for the would-be marginal coupling on the world sheet of the k deformed sigma models associated to a quantum group with q=exp(i pi/k). This includes the bosonic principal chiral models and symmetric space sigma models but also the k deformed semi-symmetric space sigma model describing strings in a deformation of AdS_5 x S^5. The world sheet sigma model is a current-current deformation of the gauged WZW model for the supergroup PSU(2,2|4) with level k. In the string theory context the beta function is shown to vanish because of the vanishing of the Killing form of PSU(2,2|4) which is another piece of evidence that the k deformed theories define consistent string theories.

Copenhagen Quantum Mechanics

In our quantum mechanics courses, measurement is usually taught in passing, as an ad-hoc procedure involving the ugly collapse of the wave function. No wonder we search for more satisfying alternatives to the Copenhagen interpretation. But this overlooks the fact that the approach fits very well with modern measurement theory with its notions of the conditioned state and quantum trajectory. In addition, what we know of as the Copenhagen interpretation is a later 1950's development and some of the earlier pioneers like Bohr did not talk of wave function collapse. In fact, if one takes these earlier ideas and mixes them with later insights of decoherence, a much more satisfying version of Copenhagen quantum mechanics emerges, one for which the collapse of the wave function is seen to be a harmless book keeping device. Along the way, we explain why chaotic systems lead to wave functions that spread out quickly on macroscopic scales implying that Schrodinger cat states are the norm rather than curiosities generated in physicists' laboratories. We then describe how the conditioned state of a quantum system depends crucially on how the system is monitored illustrating this with the example of a decaying atom monitored with a time of arrival photon detector, leading to Bohr's quantum jumps. On the other hand, other kinds of detection lead to much smoother behaviour, providing yet another example of complementarity. Finally we explain how classical behaviour emerges, including classical mechanics but also thermodynamics.

Partition function of N=2* SYM on a large four-sphere

We examine the partition function of N=2* supersymmetric SU(N) Yang-Mills theory on the four-sphere in the large radius limit. We point out that the large radius partition function, at fixed N, is computed by saddle points lying on particular walls of marginal stability on the Coulomb branch of the theory on R^4. For N an even (odd) integer and θ_YM=0, (π), these include a point of maximal degeneration of the Donagi-Witten curve to a torus where BPS dyons with electric charge [N/2] become massless. We argue that the dyon singularity is the lone saddle point in the SU(2) theory, while for SU(N) with N>2, we characterize potentially competing saddle points by obtaining the relations between the Seiberg-Witten periods at such points. Using Nekrasov's instanton partition function, we solve for the maximally degenerate saddle point and obtain its free energy as a function of g_YM and N, and show that the results are "large-N exact". In the large-N theory our results provide analytical expressions for the periods/eigenvalues at the maximally degenerate saddle point, precisely matching previously known formulae following from the correspondence between N=2* theory and the elliptic Calogero-Moser integrable model. The maximally singular point ceases to be a saddle point of the partition function above a critical value of the coupling, in agreement with the recent findings of Russo and Zarembo.

S-Matrices and Quantum Group Symmetry of k-Deformed Sigma Models

Recently, several kinds of integrable deformations of the string world sheet theory in the gauge/gravity correspondence have been constructed. One class of these, the k deformations associated to the more general q deformations but with q=exp(i pi/k) a root of unity, has been shown to be related to a particular discrete deformation of the principal chiral models and (semi-)symmetric space sigma models involving a gauged WZW model. We conjecture a form for the exact S-matrices of the bosonic integrable field theories of this type. The S-matrices imply that the theories have a hidden infinite dimensional affine quantum group symmetry. We provide some evidence, via quantum inverse scattering techniques, that the theories do indeed possess the finite-dimensional part of this quantum group symmetry.

The Copenhagen Interpretation Born Again

An approach to quantum mechanics is developed which makes the Heisenberg cut between the deterministic microscopic quantum world and the partly deterministic, partly stochastic macroscopic world explicit. The microscopic system evolves according to the Schrodinger equation with stochastic behaviour arising when the system is probed by a set of coarse grained macroscopic observables whose resolution scale defines the Heisenberg cut. The resulting stochastic process can account for the different facets of the classical limit: Newton's laws (ergodicity broken); statistical mechanics of thermal ensembles (ergodic); and solve the measurement problem (partial ergodicity breaking). In particular, the usual rules of the Copenhagen interpretation, like the Born rule, emerge, along with completely local descriptions of EPR type experiments. The formalism also re-introduces a dynamical picture of equilibration and thermalization in quantum statistical mechanics and provides insight into how classical statistical mechanics can arise in the classical limit and in a way that alleviates various conceptual problems.

An Integrable Deformation of the AdS5 x S5 Superstring

The S-matrix on the world-sheet theory of the string in AdS5 x S5 has previously been shown to admit a deformation where the symmetry algebra is replaced by the associated quantum group. The case where q is real has been identified as a particular deformation of the Green-Schwarz sigma model. An interpretation of the case with q a root of unity has, until now, been lacking. We show that the Green-Schwarz sigma model admits a discrete deformation which can be viewed as a rather simple deformation of the F/F_V gauged WZW model, where F=PSU(2,2|4). The deformation parameter q is then a k-th root of unity where k is the level. The deformed theory has the same equations-of-motion as the Green-Schwarz sigma model but has a different symplectic structure. We show that the resulting theory is integrable and has just the right amount of kappa-symmetries that appear as a remnant of the fermionic part of the original gauge symmetry. This points to the existence of a fully consistent deformed string background.

Integrable Deformations of Strings on Symmetric Spaces

A general class of deformations of integrable sigma-models with symmetric space F/G target-spaces are found. These deformations involve defining the non-abelian T dual of the sigma-model and then replacing the coupling of the Lagrange multiplier imposing flatness with a gauged F/F WZW model. The original sigma-model is obtained in the limit of large level. The resulting deformed theories are shown to preserve both integrability and the equations-of-motion, but involve a deformation of the symplectic structure. It is shown that this deformed symplectic structure involves a linear combination of the original Poisson bracket and a generalization of the Faddeev-Reshetikhin Poisson bracket which we show can be re-expressed as two decoupled F current algebras. It is then shown that the deformation can be incorporated into the classical model of strings on R x F/G via a generalization of the Pohlmeyer reduction. In this case, in the limit of large sigma-model coupling it is shown that the theory becomes the relativistic symmetric space sine-Gordon theory. These results point to the existence of a deformation of this kind for the full Green-Schwarz superstring on AdS5 x S5.

Schrodinger's Cat and the Firewall

It has been argued that when black holes are treated as quantum systems there are implications at the horizon and not just the singularity. Infalling observers will meet a firewall of high energy quanta. We argue that the question of whether an observer falling into a black hole experiences a smooth horizon or a firewall is identical to the question of whether Schrodinger's cat is either in a definite state, alive or dead, or in a superposition of the two. Since experience with real macro-systems indicate the former, the black hole state vector is seen to describe a set of decoherent alternatives each with a smooth horizon and the entanglement puzzle is thereby side stepped.

Symplectic Deformations of Integrable Field Theories and AdS/CFT

Relativistic integrable field theories like the sine-Gordon equation have an infinite set of conserved charges. In a light-front formalism these conserved charges are closely related to the integrable modified KdV hierarchy at the classical level. The latter hierarchy admits a family of symplectic structures which we argue can be viewed as deformations of the relativistic sine-Gordon symplectic structure. These deformed theories are integrable but no longer relativistic and the basic excitations of the theory, the solitons, have an interesting non-relativistic dispersion relation that in a certain limit becomes the dispersion relation of dyonic giant magnons of string theory in the AdS/CFT correspondence. We argue that the deformed classical theories can be lifted to quantum theories when the sine-Gordon theory is embedded in a larger theory that describes the string world-sheet sigma model in AdS(5)xS(5).

Asymptotic symmetries and thermodynamics of higher spin black holes in AdS3

We study black holes carrying higher spin charge in AdS3 within the framework of SL(N, R) x SL(N, R) Chern-Simons theory. Focussing attention on the N=4 case, we explicitly analyze the asymptotic symmetry algebra of black hole solutions with a chemical potential for spin-four charge. We demonstrate that the background describes an RG flow between an IR fixed point with W_4 symmetry and a UV fixed point with W-symmetry associated to a non-principal embedding of sl(2) in sl(4). Matching Chern-Simons equations with Ward identities of the deformed CFT, we show that the UV stress tensor is twisted by a certain U(1) current, and the flow is triggered by an operator with dimension 4/3 at the UV fixed point. We find independent confirmation of this picture via a consistent formulation of thermodynamics with respect to this UV fixed point. We further analyze the thermodynamics of multiple branches of black hole solutions for N=4,5 and find that the BTZ-branch, dominant at low temperatures, ceases to exist at higher temperatures following a merger with a thermodynamically unstable branch. We also point out an interesting connection between the RG flows and generalized KdV hierarchies.

New Modal Quantum Mechanics

We describe an interpretation of quantum mechanics based on reduced density matrices of sub-systems from which the standard Copenhagen interpretation emerges as an effective description for macro-systems. The interpretation is a modal one, but does not suffer from the range of problems that plague other modal interpretations. The key feature is that quantum states carry an additional property assignment in the form of one the eigenvectors of the reduced density matrix which evolves evolves according to a stochastic process driven by the unmodified Schrodinger equation, but it is usually hidden from the emergent classical description due to the ergodic nature of its dynamics. However, during a quantum measurement, ergodicity is broken by decoherence and definite outcomes occur with probabilities that agree with the Born rule.

Overview of large N QCD with chemical potential at weak and strong coupling

In this note we summarize the results from a longer article on obtaining the QCD phase diagram as a function of the temperature and chemical potential at large Nc and large Nf in the weak and the strong coupling limits. The weak coupling phase diagram is obtained from the Polyakov line order parameter, and the quark number, calculated using 1-loop perturbation theory for QCD formulated on S^1 x S^3. The strong coupling phase diagram is obtained from the same observables calculated at leading order in the lattice strong coupling and hopping parameter expansions. We show that the matrix models in these two limits agree at temperatures and chemical potentials which are not too high, such that observables in the strongly-coupled theory can be obtained from the observables in the weakly-coupled theory, and vice versa, using a simple transformation of variables.

Restoring Unitarity in the q-Deformed World-Sheet S-Matrix

The world-sheet S-matrix of the string in AdS5 x S5 has been shown to admit a q-deformation that relates it to the S-matrix of a generalization of the sine-Gordon theory, which arises as the Pohlmeyer reduction of the superstring. Whilst this is a fascinating development the resulting S-matrix is not explicitly unitary. The problem has been known for a long time in the context of S-matrices related to quantum groups. A braiding relation often called "unitarity" actually only corresponds to quantum field theory unitarity when the S-matrix is Hermitian analytic and quantum group S-matrices manifestly violate this. On the other hand, overall consistency of the S-matrix under the bootstrap requires that the deformation parameter is a root of unity and consequently one is forced to perform the "vertex" to IRF, or SOS, transformation on the states to truncate the spectrum consistently. In the IRF formulation unitarity is now manifest and the string S-matrix and the S-matrix of the generalised sine-Gordon theory are recovered in two different limits. In the latter case, expanding the Yang-Baxter equation we find that the tree-level S-matrix of the Pohlmeyer-reduced string should satisfy a modified classical Yang-Baxter equation explaining the apparent anomaly in the perturbative computation. We show that the IRF form of the S-matrix meshes perfectly with the bootstrap equations.

The Copenhagen Interpretation as an Emergent Phenomenon

The Copenhagen interpretation has been remarkably successful but seems at odds with the underlying linearity of quantum mechanics. We show how it can emerge in a simple way from the underlying microscopic quantum world governed by Schrodinger's equation without the need for observers or their brains. In order to achieve this, we assemble pieces of various pre-existing ideas. Firstly, we adopt a relational approach and use the eigenvectors of the reduced density matrix of a quantum sub-system, or equivalently the Schmidt decomposition, to define the `internal state' of a sub-system. Previous work has identified serious objections to such an interpretation because it apparently leads to macroscopic superpositions and physically unacceptable instabilities near degeneracies. We show that both these problems are solved if the sub-system consists of a large number of coarse grained degrees of freedom as one expects in order to make contact with the classical world. We further argue that coarse graining is a necessary ingredient because measuring devices have both finite spatial and temporal resolutions. What results is an interpretation in which both decoherence and coarse graining play key roles and from which the rules of the Copenhagen interpretation are seen to emerge in realistic situations that include the measurement of the position of a particle and a decay process.

The Emergent Copenhagen Interpretation of Quantum Mechanics

We introduce a new and conceptually simple interpretation of quantum mechanics based on reduced density matrices of sub-systems from which the standard Copenhagen interpretation emerges as an effective description of macroscopically large systems. Wave function collapse is seen to be a useful but fundamentally unnecessary piece of prudent book keeping which is only valid for macro-systems. The new interpretation lies in a class of modal interpretations in that it applies to quantum systems that interact with a much larger environment. However, we show that it does not suffer from the problems that have plagued similar modal interpretations like macroscopic superpositions and rapid flipping between macroscopically distinct states. We describe how the interpretation fits neatly together with fully quantum formulations of statistical mechanics and that a measurement process can be viewed as a process of ergodicity breaking analogous to a phase transition. The key feature of the new interpretation is that joint probabilities for the ergodic subsets of states of disjoint macro-systems only arise as emergent quantities. Finally we give an account of the EPR-Bohm thought experiment and show that the interpretation implies the violation of the Bell inequality characteristic of quantum mechanics but in a way that is rather novel. The final conclusion is that the Copenhagen interpretation gives a completely satisfactory phenomenology of macro-systems interacting with micro-systems.

The Structure of Non-Abelian Kinks

We consider a class of integrable quantum field theories in 1+1 dimensions whose classical equations have kink solutions with internal collective coordinates that transform under a non-abelian symmetry group. These generalised sine-Gordon theories have been shown to be related to the world sheet theory of the string in the AdS/CFT correspondence. We provide a careful analysis of the boundary conditions at spatial infinity complicated by the fact that they are defined by actions with a WZ term. We go on to describe the local and non-local charges carried by the kinks and end by showing that their structure is perfectly consistent with the exact factorizable S-matrices that have been proposed to describe these theories.

A 5d/3d duality from relativistic integrable system

We propose and prove a new exact duality between the F-terms of supersymmetric gauge theories in five and three dimensions with adjoint matter fields. The theories are compactified on a circle and are subject to the Omega deformation. In the limit proposed by Nekrasov and Shatashvili, the supersymmetric vacua become isolated and are identified with the eigenstates of a quantum integrable system. The effective twisted superpotentials are the Yang-Yang functional of the relativistic elliptic Calogero-Moser model. We show that they match on-shell by deriving the Bethe ansatz equation from the saddle point of the five-dimensional partition function. We also show that the Chern-Simons terms match and extend our proposal to the elliptic quiver generalizations.

Bound States of the q-Deformed AdS5 x S5 Superstring S-matrix

The investigation of the q deformation of the S-matrix for excitations on the string world sheet in AdS5 x S5 is continued. We argue that due to the lack of Lorentz invariance the situation is more subtle than in a relativistic theory in that the nature of bound states depends on their momentum. At low enough momentum |p|<E the bound states transform in the anti-symmetric representation of the super-algebra symmetry and become the solitons of the Pohlmeyer reduced theory in the relativistic limit. At a critical momentum |p|=E they become marginally unstable, and at higher momenta the stable bound states are in the symmetric representation and become the familiar magnons in the string limit as q->1. This subtlety fixes a problem involving the consistency of crossing symmetry with the relativistic limit found in earlier work. With mirror kinematics, obtained after a double Wick rotation, the bound state structure is simpler and there are no marginally unstable bound states.

Deconfinement transitions of large N QCD with chemical potential at weak and strong coupling

We calculate the deconfinement line of transitions for large Nc QCD at finite temperature and chemical potential in two different regimes: weak coupling in the continuum, and, strong coupling on the lattice, working in the limit where Nf is of order Nc. In the first regime we extend previous weak-coupling results from one-loop perturbation theory on S^1 x S^3 to higher temperatures, where the theory reduces to a matrix model, analogous to that of Gross, Witten, and Wadia. We obtain the line of transitions that extends from the temperature-axis, where to a first approximation the transition is higher than fourth order, to the chemical potential-axis, where the transition is third order. In the second regime we use the same matrix model to obtain the deconfinement line of transitions as a function of the coupling strength and mu / T to leading order in a strong coupling expansion of lattice QCD with heavy quarks, extending previous U(Nc) results to SU(Nc). We show that in the case of zero chemical potential the result obtained for the Polyakov line from QCD on S^1 x S^3 at weak coupling reproduces the known results from the strong coupling expansion, under a simple change of parameters, which is valid for sufficiently low temperatures and chemical potentials.

The Effect of Gravitational Tidal Forces on Renormalized Quantum Fields

The effect of gravitational tidal forces on renormalized quantum fields propagating in curved spacetime is investigated and a generalisation of the optical theorem to curved spacetime is proved. In the case of QED, the interaction of tidal forces with the vacuum polarization cloud of virtual e^+ e^- pairs dressing the renormalized photon has been shown to produce several novel phenomena. In particular, the photon field amplitude can locally increase as well as decrease, corresponding to a negative imaginary part of the refractive index, in apparent violation of unitarity and the optical theorem. Below threshold decays into e^+ e^- pairs may also occur. In this paper, these issues are studied from the point of view of a non-equilibrium initial-value problem, with the field evolution from an initial null surface being calculated for physically distinct initial conditions and for both scalar field theories and QED. It is shown how a generalised version of the optical theorem, valid in curved spacetime, allows a local increase in amplitude while maintaining consistency with unitarity. The picture emerges of the field being dressed and undressed as it propagates through curved spacetime, with the local gravitational tidal forces determining the degree of dressing and hence the amplitude of the renormalized quantum field. These effects are illustrated with many examples, including a description of the undressing of a photon in the vicinity of a black hole singularity.

The Unbearable Beingness of Light, Dressing and Undressing Photons in Black Hole Spacetimes

Gravitational tidal forces acting on the virtual e+ e- cloud surrounding a photon endow spacetime with a non-trivial refractive index. This has remarkable properties unique to gravitational theories including superluminal low-frequency propagation, in apparent violation of causality, and amplification of the renormalized photon field, in apparent violation of unitarity. Using the geometry of null congruences and the Penrose limit, we illustrate these phenomena and their resolution by tracing the history of a photon as it falls into the near-singularity region of a black hole.

A New 2d/4d Duality via Integrability

We prove a duality, recently conjectured in arXiv:1103.5726, which relates the F-terms of supersymmetric gauge theories defined in two and four dimensions respectively. The proof proceeds by a saddle point analysis of the four-dimensional partition function in the Nekrasov-Shatashvili limit. At special quantized values of the Coulomb branch moduli, the saddle point condition becomes the Bethe Ansatz Equation of the SL(2) Heisenberg spin chain which coincides with the F-term equation of the dual two-dimensional theory. The on-shell values of the superpotential in the two theories are shown to coincide in corresponding vacua. We also identify two-dimensional duals for a large set of quiver gauge theories in four dimensions and generalize our proof to these cases.

A Relativistic Relative of the Magnon S-Matrix

We construct a relativistic scattering theory based on a q deformation and large string tension limit of the magnon S-matrix of the string world sheet theory in AdS_5 x S^5. The S-matrix falls naturally into a previously studied class associated to affine quantum groups, in this case for a twisted affine loop superalgebra associated to an outer automorphism of sl(2|2). This infinite algebra includes the celebrated triply extended psl(2|2) x R^3 algebra, but only two of the centres, the lightcone components of the 2-momentum, are non-vanishing. The algebra has the interpretation as an extended supersymmetry algebra including a non-trivial R-symmetry. The representation theory of this algebra has some complications in that tensor products are reducible but indecomposable, however, we find that structure meshes perfectly with the bootstrap, or fusion, equations of S-matrix theory. The bootstrap equations can then be used inductively to generate the complete S-matrix. Unlike the magnon theory, the relativistic theory only has a finite set of states and we find that - at least when the deformation parameter q is a root of unity - the spectrum matches precisely the soliton spectrum of the relativistic theory underlying the Pohlmeyer reduction of the string world sheet theory known as the semi-symmetric space sine-Gordon theory.

Classical and Quantum Solitons in the Symmetric Space Sine-Gordon Theories

We construct the soliton solutions in the symmetric space sine-Gordon theories. The latter are a series of integrable field theories in 1+1-dimensions which are associated to a symmetric space F/G, and are related via the Pohlmeyer reduction to theories of strings moving on symmetric spaces. We show that the solitons are kinks that carry an internal moduli space that can be identified with a particular co-adjoint orbit of the unbroken subgroup H of G. Classically the solitons come in a continuous spectrum which encompasses the perturbative fluctuations of the theory as the kink charge becomes small. We show that the solitons can be quantized by allowing the collective coordinates to be time-dependent to yield a form of quantum mechanics on the co-adjoint orbit. The quantum states correspond to symmetric tensor representations of the symmetry group H and have the interpretation of a fuzzy geometric version of the co-adjoint orbit. The quantized finite tower of soliton states includes the perturbative modes at the base.

Graviton Propagation and Vacuum Polarization in Curved Space

The effects of vacuum polarization arising from loops of massive scalar particles on graviton propagation in curved space are considered. Physically, they are due to curvature induced tidal forces acting on the cloud of virtual scalar particles surrounding the graviton. The effects are tractable in a WKB and large mass limit and the results can be written as an effective refractive index for the graviton modes with both a real and imaginary part. The imaginary part of the refractive index is a curvature induced contribution to the wavefunction renormalization of the graviton in real affine time and can have the effect of dressing or un-dressing the graviton. The real part of the refractive index increases logarithmically at high frequency as long as the null energy condition is satisfied by the background.

q-Deformation of the AdS5 x S5 Superstring S-matrix and its Relativistic Limit

A set of four factorizable non-relativistic S-matrices for a multiplet of fundamental particles are defined based on the R-matrix of the quantum group deformation of the centrally extended superalgebra su(2|2). The S-matrices are a function of two independent couplings g and q=exp(iπ/k). The main result is to find the scalar factor, or dressing phase, which ensures that the unitarity and crossing equations are satisfied. For generic (g,k), the S-matrices are branched functions on a product of rapidity tori. In the limit k->infinity, one of them is identified with the S-matrix describing the magnon excitations on the string world sheet in AdS5 x S5, while another is the mirror S-matrix that is needed for the TBA. In the g->infinity limit, the rapidity torus degenerates, the branch points disappear and the S-matrices become meromorphic functions, as required by relativistic S-matrix theory. However, it is only the mirror S-matrix which satisfies the correct relativistic crossing equation. The mirror S-matrix in the relativistic limit is then closely related to that of the semi-symmetric space sine-Gordon theory obtained from the string theory by the Pohlmeyer reduction, but has anti-symmetric rather than symmetric bound states. The interpolating S-matrix realizes at the quantum level the fact that at the classical level the two theories correspond to different limits of a one-parameter family of symplectic structures of the same integrable system.

Quantization of Integrable Systems and a 2d/4d Duality

We present a new duality between the F-terms of supersymmetric field theories defined in two- and four-dimensions respectively. The duality relates N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories in four dimensions, deformed by an Omega-background in one plane, to N=(2,2) gauged linear sigma-models in two dimensions. On the four dimensional side, our main example is N=2 SQCD with gauge group SU(L) and 2L fundamental flavours. Using ideas of Nekrasov and Shatashvili, we argue that the Coulomb branch of this theory provides a quantization of the classical Heisenberg SL(2) spin chain. Agreement with the standard quantization via the Algebraic Bethe Ansatz implies the existence of an isomorphism between the chiral ring of the 4d theory and that of a certain two-dimensional theory. The latter can be understood as the worldvolume theory on a surface operator/vortex string probing the Higgs branch of the same 4d theory. We check the proposed duality by explicit calculation at low orders in the instanton expansion. One striking consequence is that the Seiberg-Witten solution of the 4d theory is captured by a one-loop computation in two dimensions. The duality also has interesting connections with the AGT conjecture, matrix models and topological string theory where it corresponds to a refined version of the geometric transition.

The AdS(5)xS(5) Semi-Symmetric Space Sine-Gordon Theory

The generalized symmetric space sine-Gordon theories are a series of 1+1-integrable field theories that are classically equivalent to superstrings on symmetric space spacetimes F/G. They are formulated in terms of a semi-symmetric space as a gauged WZW model with fermions and a potential term to deform it away from the conformal fixed point. We consider in particular the case of PSU(2,2|4)/Sp(2,2)xSp(4) which corresponds to AdS(5)xS(5). We argue that the infinite tower of conserved charges of these theories includes an exotic N=(8,8) supersymmetry that is realized in a mildy non-local way at the Lagrangian level. The supersymmetry is associated to a double central extension of the superalgebra psu(2|2)+psu(2|2) and includes a non-trivial R symmetry algebra corresponding to global gauge transformations, as well as 2-dimensional spacetime translations. We then explicitly construct soliton solutions and show that they carry an internal moduli superspace CP(2|1)xCP(2|1) with both bosonic and Grassmann collective coordinates. We show how to semi-classical quantize the solitons by writing an effective quantum mechanical system on the moduli space which takes the form of a co-adjoint orbit of SU(2|2)xSU(2|2). The spectrum consists of a tower of massive states in the short, or atypical, symmetric representations, just as the giant magnon states of the string world sheet theory, although here the tower is truncated.

The Causal Structure of QED in Curved Spacetime: Analyticity and the Refractive Index

The effect of vacuum polarization on the propagation of photons in curved spacetime is studied in scalar QED. A compact formula is given for the full frequency dependence of the refractive index for any background in terms of the Van Vleck-Morette matrix for its Penrose limit and it is shown how the superluminal propagation found in the low-energy effective action is reconciled with causality. The geometry of null geodesic congruences is found to imply a novel analytic structure for the refractive index and Green functions of QED in curved spacetime, which preserves their causal nature but violates familiar axioms of S-matrix theory and dispersion relations. The general formalism is illustrated in a number of examples, in some of which it is found that the refractive index develops a negative imaginary part, implying an amplification of photons as an electromagnetic wave propagates through curved spacetime.

The Refractive Index of Curved Spacetime II: QED, Penrose Limits and Black Holes

This work considers the way that quantum loop effects modify the propagation of light in curved space. The calculation of the refractive index for scalar QED is reviewed and then extended for the first time to QED with spinor particles in the loop. It is shown how, in both cases, the low frequency phase velocity can be greater than c, as found originally by Drummond and Hathrell, but causality is respected in the sense that retarded Green functions vanish outside the lightcone. A "phenomenology" of the refractive index is then presented for black holes, FRW universes and gravitational waves. In some cases, some of the polarization states propagate with a refractive index having a negative imaginary part indicating a potential breakdown of the optical theorem in curved space and possible instabilities.

The Semi-Classical Spectrum of Solitons and Giant Magnons

In this note, we summarize recent progress in constructing and then semi-classically quantizing solitons, or non-abelian Q-balls, in the symmetric space sine-Gordon theories. We then consider the images of these solitons in the related constrained sigma model, which are the dyonic giant magnons on the string theory world-sheet. Focussing on the case of the symmetric space S^5, we perform a semi-classical quantization of the solitons and magnons and show that both lead to Chern-Simons quantum mechanics on the internal moduli space which is a real Grassmannian SO(4)/SO(2)xSO(2) but---importantly---with a different coupling constant. Quantizing this system shows that both the Q-balls and magnons come in a tower of states transforming in symmetric representations of the SO(4) symmetry group; however, the former come in a finite tower whereas the latter come in the well-known infinite tower of dyonic giant magnons.

Weak coupling large-N transitions at finite baryon density

We study thermodynamics of free SU(N) gauge theory with a large number of colours and flavours on a three-sphere, in the presence of a baryon number chemical potential. Reducing the system to a holomorphic large-N matrix integral, paying specific attention to theories with scalar flavours (squarks), we identify novel third-order deconfining phase transitions as a function of the chemical potential. These transitions in the complex large-N saddle point configurations are interpreted as "melting" of baryons into (s)quarks. They are triggered by the exponentially large (~ exp(N)) degeneracy of light baryon-like states, which include ordinary baryons, adjoint-baryons and baryons made from different spherical harmonics of flavour fields on the three-sphere. The phase diagram of theories with scalar flavours terminates at a phase boundary where baryon number diverges, representing the onset of Bose condensation of squarks.

Numerical Study of the Two Color Attoworld

We consider QCD at very low temperatures and non-zero quark chemical potential from lattice Monte Carlo simulations of the two-color theory in a very small spatial volume (the attoscale). In this regime the quark number rises in discrete levels in qualitative agreement with what is found analytically at one loop on S3xS1 with radius R_S3 << 1/Λ_QCD. The detailed level degeneracy, however, cannot be accounted for using weak coupling arguments. At each rise in the quark number there is a corresponding spike in the Polyakov line, also in agreement with the perturbative results. In addition the quark number susceptibility shows a similar behaviour to the Polyakov line and appears to be a good indicator of a confinement-deconfinement type of transition.

QCD with Chemical Potential in a Small Hyperspherical Box

To leading order in perturbation theory, we solve QCD, defined on a small three sphere in the large N and Nf limit, at finite chemical potential and map out the phase diagram in the (mu,T) plane. The action of QCD is complex in the presence of a non-zero quark chemical potential which results in the sign problem for lattice simulations. In the large N theory, which at low temperatures becomes a conventional unitary matrix model with a complex action, we find that the dominant contribution to the functional integral comes from complexified gauge field configurations. For this reason the eigenvalues of the Polyakov line lie off the unit circle on a contour in the complex plane. We find at low temperatures that as mu passes one of the quark energy levels there is a third-order Gross-Witten transition from a confined to a deconfined phase and back again giving rise to a rich phase structure. We compare a range of physical observables in the large N theory to those calculated numerically in the theory with N=3. In the latter case there are no genuine phase transitions in a finite volume but nevertheless the observables are remarkably similar to the large N theory.

QCD with chemical potential on S^1 x S^3

In this proceedings we summarize our calculation of the phase diagram of QCD at non-zero temperature and chemical potential on S^1 x S^3 from one-loop perturbation theory [1], which is valid in the limit R << 1/Lambda, where R is the radius of S^3. We calculate several observables including the Polyakov lines and the quark number, for large number of colors N and large number of quark flavors Nf, on S^1 x S^3, and compare with results for the same system with N = 3, and with results for N=2 lattice QCD. For N > 2 the action is complex and the dominant contributions to the path integral occur in the space of complexified gauge field configurations. This results in the expectation values of the eigenvalues of the Polyakov line lying off the unit circle and out in the complex plane. This is an important issue for the lattice, and also for the calculation on S^1 x S^3 in the large N limit where we obtain analytical results using the saddle point approximation. It is thus necessary to adapt available techniques to locate the stationary solutions in the complexified gauge field configuration space.

The Effect of Gravitational Tidal Forces on Vacuum Polarization: How to Undress a Photon

The effect of gravitational tidal forces on photon propagation in curved spacetime is investigated. It is found that the imaginary part of the local refractive index Im n(u;w) may be negative as well as positive, corresponding to a local amplification as well as attenuation of the amplitude of the renormalized photon field. This is interpreted in terms of the effect of tidal forces on the virtual e^+e^- cloud surrounding the bare photon field---a positive/negative Im n(u;w) corresponds to an increased dressing/undressing of the bare photon. Below threshold decays of the photon to e^+e^- pairs can occur. Photon undressing in the vicinity of a black hole singularity is described as an example. These results are shown to be consistent with unitarity and the optical theorem in curved spacetime, which is derived here both in a local form and integrated over the photon trajectory.

The Relativistic Avatars of Giant Magnons and their S-Matrix

The motion of strings on symmetric space target spaces underlies the integrability of the AdS/CFT correspondence. Although these theories, whose excitations are giant magnons, are non-relativistic they are classically equivalent, via the Polhmeyer reduction, to a relativistic integrable field theory known as a symmetric space sine-Gordon theory. These theories can be formulated as integrable deformations of gauged WZW models. In this work we consider the class of symmetric spaces CP^{n+1} and solve the corresponding generalized sine-Gordon theories at the quantum level by finding the exact spectrum of topological solitons, or kinks, and their S-matrix. The latter involves a trignometric solution of the Yang-Baxer equation which exhibits a quantum group symmetry with a tower of states that is bounded, unlike for magnons, as a result of the quantum group deformation parameter q being a root of unity. We test the S-matrix by taking the semi-classical limit and comparing with the time delays for the scattering of classical solitons. We argue that the internal CP^{n-1} moduli space of collective coordinates of the solitons in the classical theory can be interpreted as a q-deformed fuzzy space in the quantum theory. We analyse the n=1 case separately and provide a further test of the S-matrix conjecture in this case by calculating the central charge of the UV CFT using the thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz.

Phase diagram of adjoint QCD at weak coupling and finite volume

The phase diagram of SU(N) gauge theories with fermions in an arbitrary representation R can be calculated on finite volume manifolds such as S^1 x S^3. When S^3 is small a perturbative analysis is possible and the weak-coupling analogue of the pure Yang-Mills theory confinement-deconfinement transition is accessible in the large N limit. We calculate the large N phase diagram of adjoint QCD [SU(N) gauge theory with adjoint fermions] where periodic boundary conditions are applied to fermions on S^1 such that the confined phase is favored for light enough adjoint fermion mass. We calculate the value of the mass times the radius of S^3 below which the confined phase is favored for all volumes of S^1 / S^3 and discuss the implications for large N volume reduction. We calculate also the phase diagram for N = 3 and compare with recent lattice results.

Matrix Models, Geometric Engineering and Elliptic Genera

We compute the prepotential of N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories in four dimensions obtained by toroidal compactifications of gauge theories from 6 dimensions, as a function of Kahler and complex moduli of T^2. We use three different methods to obtain this: matrix models, geometric engineering and instanton calculus. Matrix model approach involves summing up planar diagrams of an associated gauge theory on T^2. Geometric engineering involves considering F-theory on elliptic threefolds, and using topological vertex to sum up worldsheet instantons. Instanton calculus involves computation of elliptic genera of instanton moduli spaces on R^4. We study the compactifications of N=2* theory in detail and establish equivalence of all these three approaches in this case. As a byproduct we geometrically engineer theories with massive adjoint fields. As one application, we show that the moduli space of mass deformed M5-branes wrapped on T^2 combines the Kahler and complex moduli of T^2 and the mass parameter into the period matrix of a genus 2 curve.

N=4 SYM on S^3 with Near Critical Chemical Potentials

We study the N = 4 theory at weak coupling, on a three sphere in the grand canonical ensemble with R symmetry chemical potentials. We focus attention on near critical values for the chemical potentials, above which the classical theory has no ground state. By computing a one loop effective potential for the light degrees of freedom in this regime, we show the existence of flat directions of complex dimension N, 2N and 3N for one, two and three critical chemical potentials respectively; these correspond to one half, one quarter and one-eighth BPS states becoming light respectively at the critical values. At small finite temperature we show that the chemical potentials can be continued beyond their classical limiting values to yield a deconfined metastable phase with lifetime diverging in the large N limit. Our low temperaure analysis complements the high temperature metastability found by Yamada and Yaffe. The resulting phase diagram at weak coupling bears a striking resemblance to the strong coupling phase diagram for charged AdS black holes. Our analysis also reveals subtle qualitative differences between the two regimes.

Topology change in commuting saddles of thermal N=4 SYM theory

We study the large N saddle points of weakly coupled N=4 super Yang-Mills theory on S^1 x S^3 that are described by a commuting matrix model for the seven scalar fields {A_0, Φ_J}. We show that at temperatures below the Hagedorn/`deconfinement' transition the joint eigenvalue distribution is S^1 x S^5. At high temperatures T >> 1/R_{S^3}, the eigenvalues form an ellipsoid with topology S^6. We show how the deconfinement transition realises the topology change S^1 x S^5 --> S^6. Furthermore, we find compelling evidence that when the temperature is increased to T = 1/(\sqrtλR_{S^3}) the saddle with S^6 topology changes continuously to one with S^5 topology in a new second order quantum phase transition occurring in these saddles.

Double Scaling Limits in Gauge Theories and Matrix Models

We show that $\N=1$ gauge theories with an adjoint chiral multiplet admit a wide class of large-N double-scaling limits where $N$ is taken to infinity in a way coordinated with a tuning of the bare superpotential. The tuning is such that the theory is near an Argyres-Douglas-type singularity where a set of non-local dibaryons becomes massless in conjunction with a set of confining strings becoming tensionless. The doubly-scaled theory consists of two decoupled sectors, one whose spectrum and interactions follow the usual large-N scaling whilst the other has light states of fixed mass in the large-N limit which subvert the usual large-N scaling and lead to an interacting theory in the limit. $F$-term properties of this interacting sector can be calculated using a Dijkgraaf-Vafa matrix model and in this context the double-scaling limit is precisely the kind investigated in the "old matrix model'' to describe two-dimensional gravity coupled to $c<1$ conformal field theories. In particular, the old matrix model double-scaling limit describes a sector of a gauge theory with a mass gap and light meson-like composite states, the approximate Goldstone boson of superconformal invariance, with a mass which is fixed in the double-scaling limit. Consequently, the gravitational $F$-terms in these cases satisfy the string equation of the KdV hierarchy.

Large N gauge theories and topological cigars

We analyze the conjectured duality between a class of double-scaling limits of a one-matrix model and the topological twist of non-critical superstring backgrounds that contain the N=2 Kazama-Suzuki SL(2)/U(1) supercoset model. The untwisted backgrounds are holographically dual to double-scaled Little String Theories in four dimensions and to the large N double-scaling limit of certain supersymmetric gauge theories. The matrix model in question is the auxiliary Dijkgraaf-Vafa matrix model that encodes the F-terms of the above supersymmetric gauge theories. We evaluate matrix model loop correlators with the goal of extracting information on the spectrum of operators in the dual non-critical bosonic string. The twisted coset at level one, the topological cigar, is known to be equivalent to the c=1 non-critical string at self-dual radius and to the topological theory on a deformed conifold. The spectrum and wavefunctions of the operators that can be deduced from the matrix model double-scaling limit are consistent with these expectations.

Phase Transitions of Orientifold Gauge Theories at Large N in Finite Volume

In this paper we consider the phase structure of ``orientifold'' gauge theories--obtained from unitary supersymmetric gauge theories by replacing adjoint Majorana fermions by Dirac fermions in the symmetric or anti-symmetric representations--in finite volume S^3 x S^1. If the radius of the S^3 is small the calculations can be performed at weak coupling for any value of the S^1 radius. We demonstrate that there is a confinement/de-confining type of phase transition even when the fermions have periodic (non-thermal) boundary conditions around S^1. At small radius of S^1, the theory is in a phase where charge conjugation and large non-periodic gauge transformation are spontaneously broken. But for large radius of S^1 the phase preseves these symmetries just as in the related supersymmetric theory.

An N=1 duality cascade from a deformation of N=4 SUSY Yang-Mills

We study relevant deformations of an N=1 superconformal theory which is an exactly marginal deformation of U(N) N=4 SUSY Yang-Mills. The resulting theory has a classical Higgs branch that is a complex deformation of the orbifold C^3/Z_n x Z_n that is a non-compact Calabi-Yau space with isolated conifold singularities. At these singular points in moduli space the theory exhibits a duality cascade and flows to a confining theory with a mass gap. By exactly solving the corresponding holomorphic matrix model we compute the exact quantum superpotential generated at the end of the duality cascade and calculate precisely how quantum effects deform the classical moduli space by replacing the conifold singularities with three-cycles of finite size. Locally the structure is that of the deformed conifold, but the global geometry is different. This desingularized quantum deformed geometry is the moduli space of probe D3-branes at the end of a duality cascade realized on the worldvolume of (fractional) D3-branes placed at the isolated conifold singularities in the deformation of the orbifold C^3/Z_n x Z_n with discrete torsion.

Vacua of N=1 Supersymmetric QCD from Spin Chains and Matrix Models

We consider the vacuum structure of the finite N=2 theory with N_f=2N fundamental hypermultiplets broken to N=1 by a superpotential for the adjoint chiral multiplet. We do this in two ways: firstly, by compactification to three dimensions, in which case the effective superpotential is the Hamiltonian of an integrable spin chain. In the second approach, we consider the Dijkgraaf-Vafa holomorphic matrix model. We prove that the two approaches agree as long as the couplings of the two theories are related in a particular way involving an infinite series of instanton terms. The case of gauge group SU(2) with N_f=4 is considered in greater detail.

In this note we show that a simple modification of supersymmetric quantum mechanics involving a mass term for half the fermions naturally leads to a derivation of the integral formula for the chi_y genus, a quantity that interpolates between the Euler characteristic and arithmetic genus. We note that this modification naturally arises in the moduli space dynamics of monopoles or instantons in theories with 16 supercharges partially broken to 8 supercharges by mass terms.

Critical Points of Glueball Superpotentials and Equilibria of Integrable Systems

We compare the matrix model and integrable system approaches to calculating the exact vacuum structure of general N=1 deformations of either the basic N=2 theory or its generalization with a massive adjoint hypermultiplet, the N=2* theory. We show that there is a one-to-one correspondence between arbitrary critical points of the Dijkgraaf-Vafa glueball superpotential and equilibrium configurations of the associated integrable system. The latter being either the periodic Toda chain, for N=2, or the elliptic Calogero-Moser system, for N=2*. We show in both cases that the glueball superpotential at the crtical point equals the associated Hamiltonian. Our discussion includes an analysis of the vacuum structure of the N=1* theory with an arbitrary tree-level superpotential for one of the adjoint chiral fields.

Five-Dimensional Gauge Theories and Quantum Mechanical Matrix Models

We show how the Dijkgraaf-Vafa matrix model proposal can be extended to describe five-dimensional gauge theories compactified on a circle to four dimensions. This involves solving a certain quantum mechanical matrix model. We do this for the lift of the N=1* theory to five dimensions. We show that the resulting expression for the superpotential in the confining vacuum is identical with the elliptic superpotential approach based on Nekrasov's five-dimensional generalization of Seiberg-Witten theory involving the relativistic elliptic Calogero-Moser, or Ruijsenaars-Schneider, integrable system.

Exact Superpotentials from Matrix Models

Dijkgraaf and Vafa (DV) have conjectured that the exact superpotential for a large class of N=1 SUSY gauge theories can be extracted from the planar limit of a certain holomorphic matrix integral. We test their proposal against existing knowledge for a family of deformations of N=4 SUSY Yang-Mills theory involving an arbitrary polynomial superpotential for one of the three adjoint chiral superfields. Specifically, we compare the DV prediction for these models with earlier results based on the connection between SUSY gauge theories and integrable systems. We find complete agreement between the two approaches. In particular we show how the DV proposal allows the extraction of the exact eigenvalues of the adjoint scalar in the confining vacuum and hence computes all related condensates of the finite-N gauge theory. We extend these results to include Leigh-Strassler deformations of the N=4 theory.

Massive Vacua of N=1* Theory and S-duality from Matrix Models

In this note we show how Dijkgraaf and Vafa's hypothesis relating the exact superpotential of an N=1 theory to a matrix model can be used to describe all the massive vacua of the N=1*, or mass deformed N=4, theory including the Higgs vacuum. The matrix model computation of the superpotential for each massive vacuum independently yields a modular function of the associated effective coupling in that vacuum which agrees with previously derived results up to a vacuum-independent additive constant. The results in the different massive vacua can be related by the action of SL(2,Z) on the N=4 coupling, thus providing evidence for modular invariance of the underlying N=4 theory.

S-duality of the Leigh-Strassler Deformation via Matrix Models

We investigate an exactly marginal N=1 supersymmetric deformation of SU(N) N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory discovered by Leigh and Strassler. We use a matrix model to compute the exact superpotential for a further massive deformation of the U(N) Leigh-Strassler theory. We then show how the exact superpotential and eigenvalue spectrum for the SU(N) theory follows by a process of integrating-in. We find that different vacua are related by an action of the SL(2,Z) modular group on the bare couplings of the theory extending the action of electric-magnetic duality away from the N=4 theory. We perform non-trivial tests of the matrix model results against semiclassical field theory analysis. We also show that there are interesting points in parameter space where condensates can diverge and vacua disappear. Based on the matrix model results, we propose an exact elliptic superpotential to describe the theory compactified on a circle of finite radius.

Testing Seiberg-Witten Theory to All Orders in the Instanton Expansion

In the context of softly-broken N=4 to N=2 supersymmetric SU(N) gauge theory, we calculate using semi-classical instanton methods, the lowest order non-trivial terms in the mass expansion of the prepotential for all instanton number. We find exact agreement with Seiberg-Witten theory and thereby achieve the most powerful test yet of this theory. We also calculate the one- and two-instanton contributions completely and also find consistency with Seiberg-Witten theory. Our approach relies on the fact that the instanton calculus admits a nilpotent fermionic symmetry, or BRST operator, whose existence implies that the integrals over the instanton moduli space, which give the coefficients of the prepotential, localize on the space of resolved point-like instantons or what we call ``topicons''.

The Calculus of Many Instantons

We describe the modern formalism, ideas and applications of the instanton calculus for gauge theories with, and without, supersymmetry. Particular emphasis is put on developing a formalism that can deal with any number of instantons. This necessitates a thorough review of the ADHM construction of instantons with arbitrary charge and an in-depth analysis of the resulting moduli space of solutions. We review the construction of the ADHM moduli space as a hyper-Kahler quotient. We show how the functional integral in the semi-classical approximation reduces to an integral over the instanton moduli space in each instanton sector and how the resulting matrix partition function involves various geometrical quantities on the instanton moduli space: volume form, connection, curvature, isometries, etc. One important conclusion is that this partition function is the dimensional reduction of a higher-dimensional gauged linear sigma model which naturally leads us to describe the relation of the instanton calculus to D-branes in string theory. Along the way we describe powerful applications of the calculus of many instantons to supersymmetric gauge theories including (i) the gluino condensate puzzle in N=1 theories (ii) Seiberg-Witten theory in N=2 theories; and (iii) the AdS/CFT correspondence in N=2 and N=4 theories. Finally, we briefly review the modifications of the instanton calculus for a gauge theory defined on a non-commutative spacetime and we also describe a new method for calculating instanton processes using a form of localization on the instanton moduli space.

The phase structure of the finite SU(2)xSU(2) theory with N=2 supersymmetry, broken to N=1 by mass terms for the adjoint-valued chiral multiplets, is determined exactly by compactifying the theory on a circle of finite radius. The exact low-energy superpotential is constructed by identifying it as a linear combination of the Hamiltonians of a certain symplectic reduction of the spin generalized elliptic Calogero-Moser integrable system. World-sheet Instantons via the Myers Effect and N=1^* Quiver Superpotentials

In this note we explore the stringy interpretation of non-perturbative effects in N=1^* deformations of the A_{k-1} quiver models. For certain types of deformations we argue that the massive vacua are described by Nk fractional D3-branes at the orbifold polarizing into k concentric 5-brane spheres each carrying fractional brane charge. The polarization of the D3-branes induces a polarization of D-instantons into string world-sheets wrapped on the Myers spheres. We show that the superpotentials in these models are indeed generated by these world-sheet instantons. We point out that for certain parameter values the condensates yield the exact superpotential for a relevant deformation of the Klebanov-Witten conifold theory.

We then obtain exact, modular covariant formulae (for all k, N and arbitrary gauge couplings) for the holomorphic observables in the massive vacua in two different ways: by lifting to M-theory, and by compactification to three dimensions and subsequent use of mirror symmetry. We find that in the infrared regime the U(1) subgroup decouples, and the remaining SU(N) is described by the ordinary commutative Seiberg-Witten solution. Monopoles, affine algebras and the gluino condensate

We examine the low-energy dynamics of four-dimensional supersymmetric gauge theories and calculate the values of the gluino condensate for all simple gauge groups. By initially compactifying the theory on a cylinder we are able to perform calculations in a controlled weakly-coupled way for small radius. The dominant contributions to the path integral on the cylinder arise from magnetic monopoles which play the role of instanton constituents. We find that the semi-classically generated superpotential of the theory is the affine Toda potential for an associated twisted affine algebra. We determine the supersymmetric vacua and calculate the values of the gluino condensate. The number of supersymmetric vacua is equal to c_2, the dual Coxeter number, and in each vacuum the monopoles carry a fraction 1/c_2 of topological charge. As the results are independent of the radius of the circle, they are also valid in the strong coupling regime where the theory becomes decompactified. In this way we obtain values for the gluino condensate which for the classical gauge groups agree with previously known ``weak coupling instanton'' expressions (but not with the ``strong coupling instanton'' calculations). This detailed agreement provides further evidence in favour of the recently advocated resolution of the the gluino condensate puzzle. We also make explicit predictions for the gluino condensate for the exceptional groups.

Instantons in N=4 Sp(N) and SO(N) theories and the AdS/CFT correspondence

Following work on theories with SU(N) gauge groups, we perform a large-N saddle-point approximation of the measure for ADHM multi-instantons in N=4 supersymmetric gauge theories with symplectic or orthogonal gauge groups. For Sp(N) we find that a saddle-point only exists in the even instanton charge sector. For either Sp(N) or SO(N) the saddle-point solution parametrizes AdS_5 x RP^5, the dual supergravity geometry in the AdS/CFT correspondence for these theories. The instanton measure at large-N has the form of the partition function of ten-dimensional N=1 supersymmetric gauge theory with a unitary gauge group dimensionally reduced to zero dimensions.

We examine ADHM multi-instantons in the conformal N=2 supersymmetric Sp(N) gauge theory with one anti-symmetric tensor and four fundamental hypermultiplets. We argue that the ADHM construction and measure can also be deduced from purely field theoretic considerations and also from the dynamics of D-instantons in the presence of D3-branes, D7-branes and an orientifold O7-plane. The measure then admits a large-N saddle-point approximation where the D3-branes disappear but the background is changed to AdS_5 x S^5/Z_2, as expected on the basis of the AdS/CFT correspondence.
