Equivalence of weak solution concepts for mean curvature flow

We provide a connection between weak solution concepts of mean curvature flow. On the one side we have the viscosity solution which is based on the comparison principle. On the other, variational solutions, which are combined Brakke flows and distributional solutions. We prove that if one has a foliation by variational solutions, then the resulting function is the unique viscosity solution. This answers an open question suggested by the work of Evans and Spruck [J. Geom. Anal., 5(1), 1995] and the authors [J. Geom. Anal., 34(12), 2024]. These results show that almost every level set of the viscosity solution is a variational solution. Thus, we establish the equivalence of these solution concepts. Moreover, we show the generic uniqueness of variational solutions.

Phase-Field Methods for Spectral Shape and Topology Optimization

We optimize a selection of eigenvalues of the Laplace operator with Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions by adjusting the shape of the domain on which the eigenvalue problem is considered. Here, a phase-field function is used to represent the shapes over which we minimize. The idea behind this method is to modify the Laplace operator by introducing phase-field dependent coefficients in order to extend the eigenvalue problem on a fixed design domain containing all admissible shapes. The resulting shape and topology optimization problem can then be formulated as an optimal control problem with PDE constraints in which the phase-field function acts as the control. For this optimal control problem, we establish first-order necessary optimality conditions and we rigorously derive its sharp interface limit. Eventually, we present and discuss several numerical simulations for our optimization problem.

Large data limit of the MBO scheme for data clustering: $Γ$-convergence of the thresholding energies

In this work we begin to rigorously analyze the MBO scheme for data clustering in the large data limit. Each iteration of the MBO scheme corresponds to one step of implicit gradient descent for the thresholding energy on the similarity graph of some dataset. For a subset of the nodes of the graph, the thresholding energy at time $h$ is the amount of heat transferred from the subset to its complement at time $h$, rescaled by a factor $\sqrt{h}$. It is then natural to think that outcomes of the MBO scheme are (local) minimizers of this energy. We prove that the algorithm is consistent, in the sense that these (local) minimizers converge to minimizers of a suitably weighted optimal partition problem.

Strong convergence of the thresholding scheme for the mean curvature flow of mean convex sets

In this work, we analyze Merriman, Bence and Osher's thresholding scheme, a time discretization for mean curvature flow. We restrict to the two-phase setting and mean convex initial conditions. In the sense of the minimizing movements interpretation of Esedoglu and Otto we show the time-integrated energy of the approximation to converge to the time-integrated energy of the limit. As a corollary, the conditional convergence results of Otto and one of the authors become unconditional in the two-phase mean convex case. Our results are general enough to handle the extension of the scheme to anisotropic flows for which a non-negative kernel can be chosen.

The Hele-Shaw flow as the sharp interface limit of the Cahn-Hilliard equation with disparate mobilities

In this paper, we study the sharp interface limit for solutions of the Cahn-Hilliard equation with disparate mobilities. This means that the mobility function degenerates in one of the two energetically favorable configurations, suppressing the diffusion in that phase. First, we construct suitable weak solutions to this Cahn-Hilliard equation. Second, we prove precompactness of these solutions under natural assumptions on the initial data. Third, under an additional energy convergence assumption, we show that the sharp interface limit is a distributional solution to the Hele-Shaw flow with optimal energy-dissipation rate.

De Giorgi's inequality for the thresholding scheme with arbitrary mobilities and surface tensions

We provide a new convergence proof of the celebrated Merriman-Bence-Osher scheme for multiphase mean curvature flow. Our proof applies to the new variant incorporating a general class of surface tensions and mobilities, including typical choices for modeling grain growth. The basis of the proof are the minimizing movements interpretation of Esedoğlu and Otto and De Giorgi's general theory of gradient flows. Under a typical energy convergence assumption we show that the limit satisfies a sharp energy-dissipation relation.

Convergence rates of the Allen-Cahn equation to mean curvature flow: A short proof based on relative entropies

We give a short and self-contained proof for rates of convergence of the Allen-Cahn equation towards mean curvature flow, assuming that a classical (smooth) solution to the latter exists and starting from well-prepared initial data. Our approach is based on a relative entropy technique. In particular, it does not require a stability analysis for the linearized Allen-Cahn operator. As our analysis also does not rely on the comparison principle, we expect it to be applicable to more complex equations and systems.

Convergence of the Allen-Cahn Equation to multi-phase mean-curvature flow

We present a convergence result for solutions of the vector-valued Allen-Cahn Equation. In the spirit of the work of Luckhaus and Sturzenhecker we establish convergence towards a distributional formulation of multi-phase mean-curvature flow using sets of finite perimeter. Like their result, ours relies on the assumption that the time-integrated energies of the approximations converge to those of the limit. Furthermore, we apply our proof to two variants of the equation, incorporating external forces and a volume constraint.

Convergence of the thresholding scheme for multi-phase mean-curvature flow

We consider the thresholding scheme, a time discretization for mean curvature flow introduced by Merriman, Bence and Osher. We prove a convergence result in the multi-phase case. The result establishes convergence towards a weak formulation of mean curvature flow in the BV-framework of sets of finite perimeter. The proof is based on the interpretation of the thresholding scheme as a minimizing movement scheme by Esedoglu et. al.. This interpretation means that the thresholding scheme preserves the structure of (multi-phase) mean curvature flow as a gradient flow w. r. t. the total interfacial energy. More precisely, the thresholding scheme is a minimizing movement scheme for an energy functional that $Γ$-converges to the total interfacial energy. In this sense, our proof is similar to the convergence results of Almgren, Taylor and Wang and Luckhaus and Sturzenhecker, which establish convergence of a more academic minimizing movement scheme. Like the one of Luckhaus and Sturzenhecker, ours is a conditional convergence result, which means that we have to assume that the time-integrated energy of the approximation converges to the time-integrated energy of the limit. This is a natural assumption, which however is not ensured by the compactness coming from the basic estimates.

Convergence of thresholding schemes incorporating bulk effects

In this paper we establish the convergence of three computational algorithms for interface motion in a multi-phase system, which incorporate bulk effects. The algorithms considered fall under the classification of thresholding schemes, in the spirit of the celebrated Merriman-Bence-Osher algorithm for producing an interface moving by mean curvature. The schemes considered here all incorporate either a local force coming from an energy in the bulk, or a non-local force coming from a volume constraint. We first establish the convergence of a scheme proposed by Ruuth-Wetton for approximating volume-preserving mean-curvature flow. Next we study a scheme for the geometric flow generated by surface tension plus bulk energy. Here the limit is motion by mean curvature (MMC) plus forcing term. Third we consider a thresholding scheme for simulating grain growth in a polycrystal surrounded by air, which incorporates boundary effects on the solid-vapor interface. The limiting flow is MMC on the inner grain boundaries, and volume-preserving MMC on the solid-vapor interface.
