Finite quotients of three-dimensional complex tori

We provide a characterization of quotients of three-dimensional complex tori by finite groups that act freely in codimension one via a vanishing condition on the first and second orbifold Chern class. We also treat the case of actions free in codimension two, using instead the "birational" second Chern class, as we call it. Both notions of Chern classes are introduced here in the setting of compact complex spaces with klt singularities. In such generality, this topic has not been treated in the literature up to now. We also discuss the relation of our definitions to the classical Schwartz-MacPherson Chern classes.

Extendability of parallel sections in vector bundles

We address the following question: Given a differentiable manifold $M$ what are the open subsets $U$ of $M$ such that, for all vector bundles $E$ over $M$ and all linear connections $\nabla$ on $E$, any $\nabla$-parallel section in $E$ defined on $U$ extends to a $\nabla$-parallel section in $E$ defined on $M$? For simply connected manifolds $M$ (among others) we describe the entirety of all such sets $U$ which are, in addition, the complement of a $C^1$ submanifold (boundary allowed) of $M$; this delivers a partial positive answer to a problem posed by Antonio J. Di Scala and Gianni Manno. Furthermore, in case $M$ is an open submanifold of $\mathbb R^n$, $2 \leq n$, we prove that the complement of $U$ in $M$, not required to be a submanifold now, can have arbitrarily large $n$-dimensional Lebesgue measure.

Uniform stability of linear evolution equations, with applications to parallel transports

I prove the bistability of linear evolution equations $x' = A(t)x$ in a Banach space $E$, where the operator-valued function $A$ is of the form $A(t) = f'(t)G(t,f(t))$ for a binary operator-valued function $G$ and a scalar function $f$. The constant that bounds the solutions of the equation is computed explicitly; it is independent of $f$, in a sense. Two geometric applications of the stability result are presented. Firstly, I show that the parallel transport along a curve $γ$ in a manifold, with respect to some linear connection, is bounded in terms of the length of the projection of $γ$ to a manifold of one dimension lower. Secondly, I prove an extendability result for parallel sections in vector bundles, thereby answering a question by Antonio J. Di Scala.

Irreducible symplectic complex spaces

In chapter 1 we define period mappings of Hodge-de Rahm type for certain submersive, yet not necessarily locally topologically trivial, morphisms of complex manifolds. Generalizing Griffiths's theory, we interpret the differential of such period mappings as the composition of the Kodaira-Spencer map and a map derived from the sheaf cohomological cup product and the contraction of vector fields with differential forms. In chapter 2 of the text, we consider a submersive morphism $f\colon X\to S$ of complex spaces which is compactified by a proper, flat, and Kähler morphism $\bar f\colon \bar X\to S$. Taking into account the codimension of $\bar X\setminus X$ in $\bar X$, we draw conclusions about the degeneration behavior of the relative Frölicher spectral sequence of the morphism $f$ and about the local freeness of the modules $\mathrm{R}^qf_*(Ω^p_f)$; our results can be viewed as relative generalizations of a theorem of Takeo Ohsawa. In our final chapter 3, we employ the upshots of the preceding two chapters in order to deduce a local Torelli theorem for irreducible symplectic complex spaces. As an application of the local Torelli theorem, we prove that irreducible symplectic complex spaces whose codimension of the singular locus does not deceed 4 satisfy the so-called Fujiki relation.
