The Hasse principle for random Fano hypersurfaces

It is known that the Brauer--Manin obstruction to the Hasse principle is vacuous for smooth Fano hypersurfaces of dimension at least $3$ over any number field. Moreover, for such varieties it follows from a general conjecture of Colliot-Thélène that the Brauer--Manin obstruction to the Hasse principle should be the only one, so that the Hasse principle is expected to hold. Working over the field of rational numbers and ordering Fano hypersurfaces of fixed degree and dimension by height, we prove that almost every such hypersurface satisfies the Hasse principle provided that the dimension is at least $3$. This proves a conjecture of Poonen and Voloch in every case except for cubic surfaces.

Effective Ratner theorem for ASL(2,R) and gaps in \sqrt{n} modulo 1

Let G=ASL(2,R) be the affine special linear group of the plane, and set Gamma=ASL(2,Z). Building on recent work of Strömbergsson we prove a rate of equidistribution for the orbits of a certain 1-dimensional unipotent flow of Gamma\G, which projects to a closed horocycle in the unit tangent bundle to the modular surface. We use this to answer a question of Elkies and McMullen by making effective the convergence of the gap distribution of \sqrt{n} modulo 1.

Norm forms for arbitrary number fields as products of linear polynomials

Let K/Q be a field extension of finite degree and let P(t) be a polynomial over Q that splits into linear factors over Q. We show that any smooth model of the affine variety defined by the equation N_{K/Q} (k) = P(t) satisfies the Hasse principle and weak approximation whenever the Brauer-Manin obstruction is empty. Our proof is based on a combination of methods from additive combinatorics due to Green-Tao and Green-Tao-Ziegler, together with an application of the descent theory of Colliot-Thélène and Sansuc.

A transference approach to a Roth-type theorem in the squares

We show that any subset of the squares of positive relative upper density contains non-trivial solutions to a translation-invariant linear equation in five or more variables, with explicit quantitative bounds. As a consequence, we establish the partition regularity of any diagonal quadric in five or more variables whose coefficients sum to zero. Unlike previous approaches, which are limited to equations in seven or more variables, we employ transference technology of Green to import bounds from the linear setting.

Rational points on pencils of conics and quadrics with many degenerate fibres

For any pencil of conics or higher-dimensional quadrics over the rationals, with all degenerate fibres defined over the rationals, we show that the Brauer-Manin obstruction controls weak approximation. The proof is based on the Hasse principle and weak approximation for some special intersections of quadrics, which is a consequence of recent advances in additive combinatorics.
