A Complete Characterization of Passive Unitary Normalizable (PUN) Gaussian States

We provide a complete characterization of the class of multimode quantum Gaussian states that can be reduced to a tensor product of thermal states using only a passive unitary operator. We call these states \textit{passive unitary normalizable} (PUN) Gaussian states. The characterization of PUN Gaussian states is given in three different ways: (i)(i) in terms of their covariance matrices, (ii)(ii) using gauge-invariance (a special class of Glauber--Sudarshan pp-functions), and (iii)(iii) with respect to the recently obtained (A,Λ)(A,Λ) parametrization of Gaussian states in [J. Math. Phys. 62, 022102 (2021)]. In terms of the covariance matrix, our characterization states that an nn-mode quantum Gaussian state is PUN if and only if its 2n×2n2n\times 2n quantum covariance matrix SS commutes with the standard symplectic matrix JJ. It is well-known that the so-called gauge-invariant Gaussian states are PUN, but whether the converse is true is not known in the literature to the best of our knowledge. We establish the converse in affirmation. Lastly, in terms of the (A,Λ)(A,Λ)-parameterization, we show that a Gaussian state with parameters (A,Λ)(A,Λ) is PUN if and only if A=0A=0.

Fundamental Limits Of Quickest Change-point Detection With Continuous-Variable Quantum States

We generalize the quantum CUSUM (QUSUM) algorithm for quickest change-point detection, analyzed in finite dimensions by Fanizza, Hirche, and Calsamiglia (Phys. Rev. Lett. 131, 020602, 2023), to infinite-dimensional quantum systems. Our analysis relies on a novel generalization of a result by Hayashi (Hayashi, J. Phys. A: Math. Gen. 34, 3413, 2001) concerning the asymptotics of quantum relative entropy, which we establish for the infinite-dimensional setting. This enables us to prove that the QUSUM strategy retains its asymptotic optimality, characterized by the relationship between the expected detection delay and the average false alarm time for any pair of states with finite relative entropy. Consequently, our findings apply broadly, including continuous-variable systems (e.g., Gaussian states), facilitating the development of optimal change-point detection schemes in quantum optics and other physical platforms, and rendering experimental verification feasible.

Real Normal Operators and Williamson's Normal Form

A simple proof is provided to show that any bounded normal operator on a real Hilbert space is orthogonally equivalent to its transpose(adjoint). A structure theorem for invertible skew-symmetric operators, which is analogous to the finite dimensional situation is also proved using elementary techniques. The second result is used to establish the main theorem of this article, which is a generalization of Williamson's normal form for bounded positive operators on infinite dimensional separable Hilbert spaces. This has applications in the study of infinite mode Gaussian states.
