PypeIt: The Python Spectroscopic Data Reduction Pipeline

PypeIt is a Python package for semi-automated reduction of astronomical, spectroscopic data. Its algorithms build on decades-long development of previous data reduction pipelines by the developers (Bernstein, Burles, & Prochaska, 2015; Bochanski et al., 2009). The reduction procedure -- including a complete list of the input parameters and available functionality -- is provided as online documentation hosted by Read the Docs, which is regularly updated. (https://pypeit.readthedocs.io/en/latest/). Release v1.0.3 serves the following spectrographs: Gemini/GNIRS, Gemini/GMOS, Gemini/FLAMINGOS 2, Lick/Kast, Magellan/MagE, Magellan/Fire, MDM/OSMOS, Keck/DEIMOS (600ZD, 830G, 1200G), Keck/LRIS, Keck/MOSFIRE (J and Y gratings tested), Keck/NIRES, Keck/NIRSPEC (low-dispersion), LBT/Luci-I, Luci-II, LBT/MODS (beta), NOT/ALFOSC (grism4), VLT/X-Shooter (VIS, NIR), VLT/FORS2 (300I, 300V), WHT/ISIS.

The PHLEK Survey: A New Determination of the Primordial Helium Abundance

We present Keck NIRSPEC and Keck NIRES spectroscopy of sixteen metal-poor galaxies that have pre-existing optical observations. The near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy specifically targets the HeI 10830A emission line, due to its sensitivity to the physical conditions of the gas in HII regions. We use these NIR observations, combined with optical spectroscopy, to determine the helium abundance of sixteen galaxies across a metallicity range 12 + log (O/H) = 7.13 - 8.00. This data set is combined with two other samples where metallicity and helium abundance measurements can be secured: star-forming galaxies selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey spectroscopic database and existing low-metallicity systems in the literature. We calculate a linear fit to these measurements, accounting for intrinsic scatter, and report a new determination of the primordial helium number abundance, y_P = 0.0805+/-0.0017, which corresponds to a primordial helium mass fraction Y_P = 0.2436+/-0.0040. Using our determination of the primordial helium abundance in combination with the latest primordial deuterium measurement, (D/H)_P x 10^5 =2.527+/-0.030, we place a bound on the baryon density Omega_bh^2 = 0.0215+/-0.0005 and the effective number of neutrino species Neff = 2.85+/-0.28. These values are in 1.3-sigma agreement with those deduced from the Planck satellite observations of the temperature fluctuations imprinted on the Cosmic Microwave Background.

The Chemical Composition of Red Giant Branch Stars in the Galactic Globular Clusters NGC 6342 and NGC 6366

We present radial velocities and chemical abundances for red giant branch stars in the Galactic bulge globular clusters NGC 6342 and NGC 6366. The velocities and abundances are based on measurements of high resolution (R > 20,000) spectra obtained with the MMT-Hectochelle and WIYN-Hydra spectrographs. We find that NGC 6342 has a heliocentric radial velocity of +112.5 km/s (sigma = 8.6 km/s), NGC 6366 has a heliocentric radial velocity of -122.3 km/s (sigma = 1.5 km/s), and that both clusters have nearly identical metallicities ([Fe/H] ~ -0.55). NGC 6366 shows evidence of a moderately extended O-Na anti-correlation, but more data are needed for NGC 6342 to determine if this cluster also exhibits the typical O-Na relation likely found in all other Galactic globular clusters. The two clusters are distinguished from similar metallicity field stars as having larger [Na/Fe] spreads and enhanced [La/Fe] ratios, but we find that NGC 6342 and NGC 6366 display alpha and Fe-peak element abundance patterns that are typical of other metal-rich ([Fe/H] > -1) inner Galaxy clusters. However, the median [La/Fe] abundance may vary from cluster-to-cluster.

Light Element Chemistry and the Double Red Giant Branch in the Galactic Globular Cluster NGC 288

The globular cluster NGC 288 was previously reported to exhibit two distinct red giant branches (RGBs) in the narrow-band Calcium (HK) and Strömgren b and y band passes. In order to investigate this phenomenon further, we obtained moderate resolution (R$\sim$18,000) spectra of 27 RGB stars in NGC 288 with the Hydra multifiber spectrograph on the Blanco 4m telescope at Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory. From these data we derive iron ($\langle$[Fe/H]$\rangle$=-1.19; $σ$=0.12), oxygen ($\langle$[O/Fe]$\rangle$=$+$0.25; $σ$=0.13), and sodium ($\langle$[Na/Fe]$\rangle$=$+$0.15; $σ$=0.26) abundances using standard equivalent width and spectrum synthesis techniques. Combining these data with those available in the literature indicates that the two giant branches have distinctly different light element chemistry but do not exhibit a significant spread in [Fe/H]. A new transmission tracing for the CTIO Ca filter, obtained for this project, shows that CN contamination is the primary spectral feature driving the split RGB. Interestingly, the CN leak in the current CTIO Ca filter may be used as an efficient means to search for CN-weak and CN-strong stars in systems with otherwise small Ca abundance variations.
