Berry-Esseen bounds with targets and Local Limit Theorems for products of random matrices

Let $μ$ be a probability measure on $\text{GL}_d(\mathbb R)$ and denote by $S_n:= g_n \cdots g_1$ the associated random matrix product, where $g_j$'s are i.i.d.'s with law $μ$. We study statistical properties of random variables of the form $$σ(S_n,x) + u(S_n x),$$ where $x \in \mathbb P^{d-1}$, $σ$ is the norm cocycle and $u$ belongs to a class of admissible functions on $\mathbb P^{d-1}$ with values in $\mathbb R \cup \{\pm \infty\}$. Assuming that $μ$ has a finite exponential moment and generates a proximal and strongly irreducible semigroup, we obtain optimal Berry-Esseen bounds and the Local Limit Theorem for such variables using a large class of observables on $\mathbb R$ and Hölder continuous target functions on $\mathbb P^{d-1}$. As particular cases, we obtain new limit theorems for $σ(S_n,x)$ and for the coefficients of $S_n$.

Equilibrium states of endomorphisms of $\mathbb{P}^k$ I: existence and properties

We develop a new method, based on pluripotential theory, to study the transfer (Perron-Frobenius) operator induced on $\mathbb P^k = \mathbb P^k (\mathbb C)$ by a holomorphic endomorphism and a suitable continuous weight. This method allows us to prove the existence and uniqueness of the equilibrium state and conformal measure for very general weights (due to Denker-Przytycki-Urbański in dimension 1 and Urbański-Zdunik in higher dimensions, both in the case of H\''older continuous weights). We establish a number of properties of the equilibrium states, including mixing, K-mixing, mixing of all orders, and an equidistribution of repelling periodic points. Our analytic method replaces all distortion estimates on inverse branches with a unique, global, estimate on dynamical currents, and allows us to reduce the dynamical questions to comparisons between currents and their potentials.

Equilibrium states of endomorphisms of $\mathbb{P}^k$ II: spectral stability and limit theorems

We establish the existence of a spectral gap for the transfer operator induced on $\mathbb P^k = \mathbb P^k (\mathbb C)$ by a generic holomorphic endomorphism and a suitable continuous weight and its perturbations on various functional spaces, which is new even in dimension one. The main issue to overcome is the rigidity of the complex objects, since the transfer operator is a non-holomorphic perturbation of the operator $f_*$. The system is moreover non-uniformly hyperbolic and one may have critical points on the Julia set. The construction of our norm requires the introduction and study of several intermediate new norms, and a careful combination of ideas from pluripotential and interpolation theory. As far as we know, this is the first time that pluripotential methods have been applied to solve a mixed real-complex problem. Thanks to the spectral gap, we establish an exponential speed of convergence for the equidistribution of the backward orbits of points towards the conformal measure. Moreover, we obtain a full list of statistical properties for the equilibrium states: exponential mixing, CLT, Berry-Esseen theorem, local CLT, ASIP, LIL, LDP, almost sure CLT. Many of these properties are new even in dimension one, some even in the case of zero weight function (i.e., for the measure of maximal entropy).

The complex Sobolev Space and Hölder continuous solutions to Monge-Ampère equations

Let $X$ be a compact Kähler manifold of dimension $n$ and $ω$ a Kähler form on $X$. We consider the complex Monge-Ampère equation $(dd^c u+ω)^n=μ$, where $μ$ is a given positive measure on $X$ of suitable mass and $u$ is an $ω$-plurisubharmonic function. We show that the equation admits a Hölder continuous solution {\it if and only if} the measure $μ$, seen as a functional on a complex Sobolev space $W^*(X)$, is Hölder continuous. A similar result is also obtained for the complex Monge-Ampère equations on domains of $\mathbb{C}^n$.

Zero entropy automorphisms of compact Kähler manifolds and dynamical filtrations

We study zero entropy automorphisms of a compact Kähler manifold $X$. Our goal is to bring to light some new structures of the action on the cohomology of $X$, in terms of the so-called dynamical filtrations on $H^{1,1}(X, {\mathbb R})$. Based on these filtrations, we obtain the first general upper bound on the polynomial growth of the iterations $(g^m)^* \, {\circlearrowleft} \, H^2(X, {\mathbb C})$ where $g$ is a zero entropy automorphism, in terms of ${\rm dim} \, X$ only. We also give an upper bound for the (essential) derived length $\ell_{\rm ess}(G, X)$ for every zero entropy subgroup $G$, again in terms of the dimension of $X$ only. We propose a conjectural upper bound for the essential nilpotency class $c_{\rm ess}(G,X)$ of a zero entropy subgroup $G$. Finally, we construct examples showing that our upper bound of the polynomial growth (as well as the conjectural upper bound of $c_{\rm ess}(G,X)$) are optimal.

Equidistribution problems of complex dynamics in higher dimension

Equidistribution of the orbits of points, subvarieties or of periodic points in complex dynamics is a fundamental problem. It is often related to strong ergodic properties of the dynamical system and to a deep understanding of analytic cycles, or more generally positive closed currents, of arbitrary dimension and degree. The later topic includes the study of the potentials and super-potentials of positive closed currents, their intersection with or without dimension excess. In this paper, we will survey some results and tools developed during the last two decades. Related concepts, new techniques and open problems will be presented.

Equidistribution speed for Fekete points associated with an ample line bundle

Let K be the closure of a bounded open set with smooth boundary in C^n. A Fekete configuration of order p for K is a finite subset of K maximizing the Vandermonde determinant associated with polynomials of degree at most p. A recent theorem by Berman, Boucksom and Witt Nystrom implies that Fekete configurations for K are asymptotically equidistributed with respect to a canonical equilibrium measure, as p tends to infinite. We give here an explicit estimate for the speed of convergence. The result also holds in a general setting of Fekete points associated with an ample line bundle over a projective manifold. Our approach requires a new estimate on Bergman kernels for line bundles and quantitative results in pluripotential theory which are of independent interest.

Large deviations principle for some beta-ensembles

Let L be a positive line bundle over a projective complex manifold X. Consider the space of holomorphic sections of the tensor power of order p of L. The determinant of a basis of this space, together with some given probability measure on a weighted compact set in X, induces naturally a beta-ensemble, i.e., a random point process on the compact set. Physically, this general setting corresponds to a gas of free fermions in X and may admit some random matrix models. The empirical measures, associated with such beta-ensembles, converge almost surely to an equilibrium measure when p goes to infinity. We establish a large deviations principle (LDP) with an effective speed of convergence for these empirical measures. Our study covers the case of some beta-ensembles on a compact subset of a real sphere or of a real Euclidean space.

Rigidity of Julia sets for Henon type maps

We prove that the Julia set of a Henon type automorphism on C^2 is very rigid: it supports a unique positive ddc-closed current of mass 1. A similar property holds for the cohomology class of the Green current associated with an automorphism of positive entropy on a compact Kaehler surface. Relations between this phenomenon, several quantitative equidistribution properties and the theory of value distribution will be discussed. We also survey some rigidity properties of Henon type maps on C^k and of automorphisms of compact Kaehler manifolds.

Density of positive closed currents, a theory of non-generic intersections

We introduce a notion of density which extends both the notion of Lelong number and the theory of intersection for positive closed currents on Kaehler manifolds. For arbitrary finite family of positive closed currents on a compact Kaehler manifold we construct cohomology classes which represent their intersection even when a phenomenon of excess dimension occurs. An example is the case of two algebraic varieties whose intersection has dimension larger than the expected number. The theory allows to solve problems in complex dynamics. Basic calculus on the density of currents is established.

Equidistribution of saddle periodic points for Henon-type automorphisms of C^k

In this paper, we prove the equidistribution of saddle periodic points for Henon-type automorphisms of C^k with respect to it equilibrium measure. A general strategy to obtain equidistribution properties in any dimension is presented. It is based on our recent theory of densities for positive closed currents. Several fine properties of dynamical currents are also proved.

Characterization of Monge-Ampere measures with Holder continuous potentials

We show that the complex Monge-Ampere equation on a compact Kaehler manifold (X,ω) of dimension n admits a Holder continuous omega-psh solution if and only if its right-hand side is a positive measure with Holder continuous super-potential. This property is true in particular when the measure has locally Holder continuous potentials or when it belongs to the Sobolev space W^{2n/p-2+epsilon,p}(X) or to the Besov space B^{epsilon-2}_{\infty,\infty}(X) for some epsilon>0 and p>1.

Equidistribution of zeros of holomorphic sections in the non compact setting

We consider N-tensor powers of a positive Hermitian line bundle L over a non-compact complex manifold X. In the compact case, B. Shiffman and S. Zelditch proved that the zeros of random sections become asymptotically uniformly distributed with respect to the natural measure coming from the curvature of L, as N tends to infinity. Under certain boundedness assumptions on the curvature of the canonical line bundle of X and on the Chern form of L we prove a non-compact version of this result. We give various applications, including the limiting distribution of zeros of cusp forms with respect to the principal congruence subgroups of SL2(Z) and to the hyperbolic measure, the higher dimensional case of arithmetic quotients and the case of orthogonal polynomials with weights at infinity. We also give estimates for the speed of convergence of the currents of integration on the zero-divisors.

On the dynamical degrees of meromorphic maps preserving a fibration

Let f be a dominant meromorphic self-map on a compact Kaehler manifold X which preserves a fibration given by a meromorphic map from X to a compact Kaehler manifold Y. We compute the dynamical degrees of f in term of its dynamical degrees relative to the fibration and the dynamical degrees of the map g on Y which is induced by f. We derive from this result new properties of some fibrations intrinsically associated to X when this manifold admits an interesting dynamical system.

Heat equation and ergodic theorems for Riemann surface laminations

We introduce the heat equation relative to a positive dd-bar-closed current and apply it to the invariant currents associated with Riemann surface laminations possibly with singularities. The main examples are holomorphic foliations by Riemann surfaces in projective spaces. We prove two kinds of ergodic theorems for such currents: one associated to the heat diffusion and one close to Birkhoff's averaging on orbits of a dynamical system. The heat diffusion theorem with respect to a harmonic measure is also developed for real laminations.
