Deep Pre-Alignment for VLMs

Most Vision Language Models (VLMs) directly map outputs from ViT encoders to the LLM via a lightweight projector. While effective, recent analysis suggests this architecture suffers from an alignment challenge: visual features remain distant from the text space in the initial layers of the LLM, forcing the model to waste critical depth~\cite{zhang-etal-2024-investigating,artzy-schwartz-2024-attend} on superficial modality alignment rather than deep understanding and complex reasoning. In this work, we propose Deep Pre-Alignment (DPA), a novel architecture that replaces the standard ViT encoder with a small VLM as perceiver, ensuring visual features are deeply aligned with the text space of the target large language model. Comprehensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of DPA. On the 4B parameter scale, DPA outperforms baselines by 1.9 points across 8 multimodal benchmarks, with gains widening to 3.0 points at the 32B scale. Moreover, by offloading alignment to the perceiver, DPA achieves a 32.9\% reduction in language capability forgetting over 3 text benchmarks. We further demonstrate that these gains are consistent across different LLM families including Qwen3 and LLaMA 3.2, highlighting the generality of our approach. Beyond performance, DPA also offers a seamless upgrade path for current VLM development, requiring only a modular replacement for the visual encoder with marginal computation overhead.

LLaVA-UHD v4: What Makes Efficient Visual Encoding in MLLMs?

Visual encoding constitutes a major computational bottleneck in Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs), especially for high-resolution image inputs. The prevailing practice typically adopts global encoding followed by post-ViT compression. Global encoding produces massive token sequences, while post-ViT compression incurs the full quadratic attention cost of the ViT before any token reduction takes place. In this work, we revisit this convention along two dimensions: the encoding strategy and visual token compression. First, controlled experiments show that slice-based encoding outperforms global encoding across benchmarks, suggesting that preserving local details through sliced views can be more beneficial than applying global attention for fine-grained perception. Second, we introduce intra-ViT early compression, which reduces tokens in shallow ViT layers and substantially lowers visual-encoding FLOPs while preserving downstream performance. By integrating intra-ViT compression into the slice-based encoding framework, we present LLaVA-UHD v4, an efficient and compute-controllable visual encoding scheme tailored for high-resolution inputs. Across a diverse set of benchmarks covering document understanding, OCR, and general VQA, LLaVA-UHD v4 reduces visual-encoding FLOPs by 55.8% while matching or even surpassing baseline performance. These results suggest that visual-encoding efficiency can be substantially improved without sacrificing downstream performance, providing a practical design direction for efficient high-resolution MLLMs. All model weights and code will be publicly released to support further research.

MiniCPM-o 4.5: Towards Real-Time Full-Duplex Omni-Modal Interaction

Recent progress in multimodal large language models (MLLMs) has brought AI capabilities from static offline data processing to real-time streaming interaction, yet they still remain far from human-level multimodal interaction. The key bottlenecks are no longer modality coverage or latency alone, but the interaction paradigm itself. First, perception and response are still separated into alternating phases, preventing models from incorporating new inputs for timely adjustment during generation. Second, most current models remain reactive, responding only to explicit user requests instead of acting proactively in the evolving multimodal environment. We present MiniCPM-o 4.5, our latest effort towards human-like multimodal interaction, which mitigates these gaps by real-time full-duplex omni-modal interaction. It can see, listen, and speak simultaneously in real-time, while also exhibiting proactive behaviors such as issuing reminders or comments based on its continuous understanding of the live scene. The key technique behind MiniCPM-o 4.5 is Omni-Flow, a unified streaming framework that aligns omni-modal inputs and outputs along a shared temporal axis. This formulation converts conventional turn-based interaction into a full-duplex, time-aligned process, enabling simultaneous perception and response and allowing proactive behavior to arise within the same framework. With a total of 9B parameters, MiniCPM-o 4.5 approaches Gemini 2.5 Flash in vision-language capabilities, delivering state-of-the-art open-source performance at its scale. It also surpasses Qwen3-Omni-30B-A3B in omni-modal understanding and delivers better speech generation, with significantly higher computation efficiency. Driven by its efficient architecture design and inference optimization, the model can perform real-time full-duplex omni-modal interaction on edge devices with less than 12GB RAM cost.

Thinking with Blueprints: Assisting Vision-Language Models in Spatial Reasoning via Structured Object Representation

Spatial reasoning -- the ability to perceive and reason about relationships in space -- advances vision-language models (VLMs) from visual perception toward spatial semantic understanding. Existing approaches either revisit local image patches, improving fine-grained perception but weakening global spatial awareness, or mark isolated coordinates, which capture object locations but overlook their overall organization. In this work, we integrate the cognitive concept of an object-centric blueprint into VLMs to enhance spatial reasoning. Given an image and a question, the model first constructs a JSON-style blueprint that records the positions, sizes, and attributes of relevant objects, and then reasons over this structured representation to produce the final answer. To achieve this, we introduce three key techniques: (1) blueprint-embedded reasoning traces for supervised fine-tuning to elicit basic reasoning skills; (2) blueprint-aware rewards in reinforcement learning to encourage the blueprint to include an appropriate number of objects and to align final answers with this causal reasoning; and (3) anti-shortcut data augmentation that applies targeted perturbations to images and questions, discouraging reliance on superficial visual or linguistic cues. Experiments show that our method consistently outperforms existing VLMs and specialized spatial reasoning models.

Contrastive Learning with Hard Negative Entities for Entity Set Expansion

Entity Set Expansion (ESE) is a promising task which aims to expand entities of the target semantic class described by a small seed entity set. Various NLP and IR applications will benefit from ESE due to its ability to discover knowledge. Although previous ESE methods have achieved great progress, most of them still lack the ability to handle hard negative entities (i.e., entities that are difficult to distinguish from the target entities), since two entities may or may not belong to the same semantic class based on different granularity levels we analyze on. To address this challenge, we devise an entity-level masked language model with contrastive learning to refine the representation of entities. In addition, we propose the ProbExpan, a novel probabilistic ESE framework utilizing the entity representation obtained by the aforementioned language model to expand entities. Extensive experiments and detailed analyses on three datasets show that our method outperforms previous state-of-the-art methods.
