The stress field and energy of screw dislocation in smectic-A liquid crystals and on the mistakes of the classical solution

The mistakes of the classical solution of screw dislocations in smectic-A liquid crystals are pointed out. This reveals a serious problem of the well-known theory, which may be named de Gennes-Kleman-Pershan paradox, for many decades in the scientific community of liquid crystal study. The correct solution is given in this letter in terms of simplest, elementary and straightforward solution method. Furthermore, the stress filed and energy of dislocation are discussed in detail. The present article gives a corrected stress field and dislocation energy as well.

A model of crack based on dislocations in smectic A liquid crystals

A plastic crack model for smectic A liquid crystals under longitudinal shear is suggested. The solution of screw dislocation in smectic A is the key in which the correct result is just obtained by overcoming a longstanding puzzle [19]. We further use the dislocation pile-up principle and the singular integral equation method, construct the solution of the crack in the phase. From the solution we can determine the size of the plastic zone at the crack tip and the crack tip opening (tearing) displacement, which are parameters being relevant to the local stability/instability of materials. The results may be useful in developing soft-matter mechanics.

Elasticity and hydrodynamics of quasicrystals with 7-, 14-, 9- and 18-fold symmetries

This letter reports theory of elasticity and hydrodynamics of quasicrystals with 7-, 14-, 9- and 18-fold symmetries in solid phase, in which the 6-dimensional embedding space concept is used. Based on the concept and the Landau-Anderson symmetry breaking principle and the Lubensky hydrodynamics, the governing equations for the above quasicrystal systems have been set up, the solving procedure for the initial-boundary value problems of the equations is discussed as well. Though the discussion is concerned only for the quasicrystals, in particular for one of 18-fold symmetry, in solid phase, it may be a basis for those in soft matter phase observed recently.

The elasto-/hydro-dynamics of quasicrystals with 12- and 18-fold symmetries in some soft matters and mathematical solutions

The observation recently of 12-fold quasicrystals in polymers, nanoparticle mixture and 12-fold and 18-fold quasicrystals in colloidal solutions are important events for the study of quasicrystals. To describe the mechanical behaviour we propose a new solid-liquid phase quasicrystal model for some soft matters including polymers and colloids. The so-called new solid-liquid phase, is a new phase model of anisotropic fluid, but different from liquid crystal phase, here the structure presents quasiperiodic symmetry. Based on the model, the elasticity, fluidity and viscosity of the material have been studied, the relevant mathematical theory has also been proposed. Some mathematical solutions of the theory are discussed.
