Universality of scaled particle spectra in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions

We study the transverse momentum spectra of identified particles in ultrarelativistic collisions of large and small collision systems. In order to isolate information contained in the momentum dependence, we propose to scale the spectra by the total particle number and mean transverse momentum -- global quantities which are already well studied. We observe an interesting, nearly universal, centrality-independent shape in the scaled spectra, similar to scalings that have been studied previously. This scaling behavior breaks down at large transverse momentum and for very small systems, such as those produced in p-p collisions. We perform hybrid hydrodynamic simulations and show that, in these simulations, a centrality-independent shape is a consequence of an event-by-event independence. Our results motivate further theoretical and experimental investigations of the regime of validity of this scaling phenomenon and their physical interpretation at different collision energies and systems.

Tsallis statistics and thermofractals: applications to high energy and hadron physics

We study the applications of non-extensive Tsallis statistics to high energy and hadron physics. These applications include studies of $pp$ collisions, equation of state of QCD, as well as Bose-Einstein condensation. We also analyze the connections of Tsallis statistics with thermofractals, and address some of the conceptual aspects of the fractal approach, which are expressed in terms of the renormalization group equation and the self-energy corrections to the parton mass. We associate these well-known concepts with the origins of the fractal structure in the quantum field theory.

Measuring Momentum-Dependent Flow Fluctuations in Heavy-Ion Collisions

In heavy-ion collisions, momentum-dependent pair correlations can be characterized by a principal component analysis (PCA), in which subleading modes are expected to reveal new information on flow fluctuations. However, we find that, as currently measured, these modes can be dominated by multiplicity fluctuations, which serve as an unwanted background. Here, we propose new PCA observables that are robust against multiplicity fluctuations and isolate novel sources of flow fluctuations, thus being suited to provide fresh insight into the initial stages of the system at small length scales.

Momentum-dependent flow fluctuations as a hydrodynamic response to initial geometry

We propose a redefinition of the principal component analysis (PCA) of anisotropic flow that makes it more directly connected to fluctuations of the initial geometry of the system. Then, using state-of-the-art hydrodynamic simulations, we make an explicit connection between flow fluctuations and a cumulant expansion of the initial transverse geometry. In particular, we show that the second principal component of elliptic flow is generated by higher-order cumulants, and therefore probes smaller length scales of the initial state. With this information, it will be possible to put new constraints on properties of the early-time dynamics of a heavy-ion collision, including small-scale structure, as well as properties of the quark-gluon plasma.

Probing the structure of the initial state of heavy-ion collisions with $p_T$-dependent flow fluctuations

The connection between initial-state geometry and anisotropic flow can be quantified through a well-established mapping between $p_T$-integrated flow harmonics and cumulants of the initial transverse energy distribution. In this paper we successfully extend this mapping to also include $p_T$-differential flow. In doing so, we find that subleading principal components of anisotropic flow can reveal previously unobserved details of the hydrodynamic response, in both the linear and the nonlinear regimes. Most importantly, we show that they provide novel information on the small-scale structures present in the initial stage of relativistic heavy-ion collisions.

Bag-type Model with Fractal Structure

In this work we present a bag-type model within a non-extensive statistics applied to the description of the properties of a hadronic system with an underlying fractal structure. The non-extensive ideal gas inside the bag is determined by the grand canonical partition function from which pressure, energy and particle density as well as temperature and chemical potential are obtained for the hadronic system. These quantities are studied in the approximation of fixed mass for all bag constituents but also for discrete and continuum masses. In all cases, the freeze-out line, corresponding to the energy per particle equal to 1 GeV and the lines corresponding to a fractal structure inside the proton volume are obtained. Finally, the pressure on the bag surface of the proton is calculated and the resulting value $(0.135\, {\rm GeV})^4$ obtained.

Conformal or Confining

We present a lattice study of the phase transitions at zero and nonzero temperature for the $SU(3)$ gauge theory with a varying number of flavours $N_f$ in the fundamental representation of the gauge group. We show that all results are consistent with a lower edge of the conformal window between $N_f=8$ and $N_f=6$. A lower edge in this interval is in remarkable agreement with perturbation theory and recent large-$N$ arguments. .

Approaching Conformality

We investigate the preconformal region of the phase diagram of SU(3) theories with fundamental flavors. We have simulated SU(3) theories with six and eight fundamental flavors at volumes 32^3 x 64. We use the generated configurations to measure the string tension σand the w0 scale setting quantity extracted from the gradient flow. We show preliminary results on the ratios Tc/\sqrtσ and Tc w0. We compare them to the behavior obtained at smaller Nf and discuss the implications of our results.

The bulk transition of QCD with twelve flavors and the role of improvement

We study the SU(3) gauge theory with Nf=12 flavors in the fundamental representation by use of lattice simulations with staggered fermions. With a non-improved action we observe a chiral zero-temperature (bulk) transition separating a region at weak coupling, where chiral symmetry is realized, from a region at strong coupling where chiral symmetry is broken. With improved actions, a more complicated pattern emerges, and in particular two first order transitions in the chiral limit appear. We observe that at sufficiently strong coupling the next-to-nearest neighbor terms of the improved lattice action are no longer irrelevant and can indeed modify the pattern observed without improvement. Baryon number conservation can be realized in an unusual way, allowing for an otherwise prohibited oscillating term in the pseudoscalar channel. We discuss the phenomenon by means of explicit examples borrowed from statistical mechanics. Finally, these observations can also be useful when simulating other strongly coupled systems on the lattice, such as graphene.

The strong coupling regime of twelve flavors QCD

We summarize the results recently reported in Ref.[1] [A. Deuzeman, M.P. Lombardo, T. Nunes da Silva and E. Pallante,"The bulk transition of QCD with twelve flavors and the role of improvement"] for the SU(3) gauge theory with Nf=12 fundamental flavors, and we add some numerical evidence and theoretical discussion. In particular, we study the nature of the bulk transition that separates a chirally broken phase at strong coupling from a chirally restored phase at weak coupling. When a non-improved action is used, a rapid crossover is observed at small bare quark masses. Our results confirm a first order nature for this transition, in agreement with previous results we obtained using an improved action. As shown in Ref.[1], when improvement of the action is used, the transition is preceded by a second rapid crossover at weaker coupling and an exotic phase emerges, where chiral symmetry is not yet broken. This can be explained [1] by the non hermiticity of the improved lattice Transfer matrix, arising from the competition of nearest-neighbor and non-nearest neighbor interactions, the latter introduced by improvement and becoming increasingly relevant at strong coupling and coarse lattices. We further comment on how improvement may generally affect any lattice system at strong coupling, be it graphene or non abelian gauge theories inside or slightly below the conformal window.

Bulk transitions of twelve flavor QCD and $U_A(1)$ symmetry

We present an update on our ongoing study on the nature of the bulk transition observed at strong coupling in the SU(3) gauge theory with N_f = 12 flavors in the fundamental representation. We show evidence that there is a first order chiral symmetry breaking bulk transition separating a region at weak coupling where chiral symmetry is restored from a region at strong coupling where chiral symmetry is broken. We also discuss hints of a separate partial restoration of U_A(1) at weaker coupling. The results are in agreement with restoration of conformality in non abelian gauge theories as the number of flavors is increased.
