Experimental Control of the Degree of Non-Classicality via Quantum Coherence

The origin of non-classicality in physical systems and its connection to distinctly quantum features such as entanglement and coherence is a central question in quantum physics. This work analyses this question theoretically and experimentally, linking quantitatively non-classicality with quantum coherence. On the theoretical front, we show when the coherence of an observable is linearly related to the degree of violation of the Kolmogorov condition, which quantifies the deviation from any classical (non-invasive) explanation of the multi-time statistics. Experimentally, we probe this connection between coherence and non-classicality in a time-multiplexed optical quantum walk. We demonstrate exquisite control of quantum coherence of the walker by varying the degree of coherent superposition effected by the coin, and we show a concomitant variation in the degree of non-classicality of the walker statistics, which can be accessed directly by virtue of the unprecedented control on the measurement-induced effects obtained via fast programmable electro-optic modulators.

Eigenvalue Measurement of Topologically Protected Edge states in Split-Step Quantum Walks

We study topological phenomena of quantum walks by implementing a novel protocol that extends the range of accessible properties to the eigenvalues of the walk operator. To this end, we experimentally realise for the first time a split-step quantum walk with decoupling, which allows for investigating the effect of a bulk-boundary while realising only a single bulk configuration. We approximate the symmetry protected edge states with high similarities and read out the phase relative to a reference for all modes. In this way we observe eigenvalues which are distinguished by the presence or absence of sign flips between steps. Furthermore, the results show that investigating a bulk-boundary with a single bulk is experimentally feasible when decoupling the walk beforehand.

Quantum Walks with Dynamical Control: Graph Engineering, Initial State Preparation and State Transfer

Quantum walks are a well-established model for the study of coherent transport phenomena and provide a universal platform in quantum information theory. Dynamically influencing the walker's evolution gives a high degree of flexibility for studying various applications. Here, we present time-multiplexed finite quantum walks of variable size, the preparation of non-localized input states and their dynamical evolution. As a further application, we implement a state transfer scheme for an arbitrary input state to two different output modes. The presented experiments rely on the full dynamical control of a time-multiplexed quantum walk, which includes adjustable coin operation as well as the possibility to flexibly configure the underlying graph structures.

Quantum walk coherences on a dynamical percolation graph

Coherent evolution governs the behaviour of all quantum systems, but in nature it is often subjected to influence of a classical environment. For analysing quantum transport phenomena quantum walks emerge as suitable model systems. In particular, quantum walks on percolation structures constitute an attractive platform for studying open system dynamics of random media. Here, we present an implementation of quantum walks differing from the previous experiments by achieving dynamical control of the underlying graph structure. We demonstrate the evolution of an optical time-multiplexed quantum walk over six double steps, revealing the intricate interplay between the internal and external degrees of freedom. The observation of clear non-Markovian signatures in the coin space testifies the high coherence of the implementation and the extraordinary degree of control of all system parameters. Our work is the proof-of-principle experiment of a quantum walk on a dynamical percolation graph, paving the way towards complex simulation of quantum transport in random media.
