Special Geometry, Hessian Structures and Applications

The target space geometry of abelian vector multiplets in ${\cal N}= 2$ theories in four and five space-time dimensions is called special geometry. It can be elegantly formulated in terms of Hessian geometry. In this review, we introduce Hessian geometry, focussing on aspects that are relevant for the special geometries of four- and five-dimensional vector multiplets. We formulate ${\cal N}= 2$ theories in terms of Hessian structures and give various concrete applications of Hessian geometry, ranging from static BPS black holes in four and five space-time dimensions to topological string theory, emphasizing the role of the Hesse potential. We also discuss the r-map and c-map which relate the special geometries of vector multiplets to each other and to hypermultiplet geometries. By including time-like dimensional reductions, we obtain theories in Euclidean signature, where the scalar target spaces carry para-complex versions of special geometry.

Hessian geometry and the holomorphic anomaly

We present a geometrical framework which incorporates higher derivative corrections to the action of N = 2 vector multiplets in terms of an enlarged scalar manifold which includes a complex deformation parameter. This enlarged space carries a deformed version of special Kahler geometry which we characterise. The holomorphic anomaly equation arises in this framework from the integrability condition for the existence of a Hesse potential.

Non-extremal black hole solutions from the c-map

We construct new static, spherically symmetric non-extremal black hole solutions of four-dimensional ${\cal N}=2$ supergravity, using a systematic technique based on dimensional reduction over time (the c-map) and the real formulation of special geometry. For a certain class of models we actually obtain the general solution to the full second order equations of motion, whilst for other classes of models, such as those obtainable by dimensional reduction from five dimensions, heterotic tree-level models, and type-II Calabi-Yau compactifications in the large volume limit a partial set of solutions are found. When considering specifically non-extremal black hole solutions we find that regularity conditions reduce the number of integration constants by one half. Such solutions satisfy a unique set of first order equations, which we identify. Several models are investigated in detail, including examples of non-homogeneous spaces such as the quantum deformed $STU$ model. Though we focus on static, spherically symmetric solutions of ungauged supergravity, the method is adaptable to other types of solutions and to gauged supergravity.

Quaternionic Kähler metrics associated with special Kähler manifolds

We give an explicit formula for the quaternionic Kähler metrics obtained by the HK/QK correspondence. As an application, we give a new proof of the fact that the Ferrara-Sabharwal metric as well as its one-loop deformation is quaternionic Kähler. A similar explicit formula is given for the analogous (K/K) correspondence between Kähler manifolds endowed with a Hamiltonian Killing vector field. As an example, we apply this formula in the case of an arbitrary conical Kähler manifold.

Special Geometry of Euclidean Supersymmetry IV: the local c-map

We consider timelike and spacelike reductions of 4D, N = 2 Minkowskian and Euclidean vector multiplets coupled to supergravity and the maps induced on the scalar geometry. In particular, we investigate (i) the (standard) spatial c-map, (ii) the temporal c-map, which corresponds to the reduction of the Minkowskian theory over time, and (iii) the Euclidean c-map, which corresponds to the reduction of the Euclidean theory over space. In the last two cases we prove that the target manifold is para-quaternionic Kahler. In cases (i) and (ii) we construct two integrable complex structures on the target manifold, one of which belongs to the quaternionic and para-quaternionic structure, respectively. In case (iii) we construct two integrable para-complex structures, one of which belongs to the para-quaternionic structure. In addition we provide a new global construction of the spatial, temporal and Euclidean c-maps, and separately consider a description of the target manifold as a fibre bundle over a projective special Kahler or para-Kahler base.

Time-like reductions of five-dimensional supergravity

In this paper we study the scalar geometries occurring in the dimensional reduction of minimal five-dimensional supergravity to three Euclidean dimensions, and find that these depend on whether one first reduces over space or over time. In both cases the scalar manifold of the reduced theory is described as an eight-dimensional Lie group $L$ (the Iwasawa subgroup of $G_{2(2)}$) with a left-invariant para-quaternionic-Kähler structure. We show that depending on whether one reduces first over space or over time, the group $L$ is mapped to two different open $L$-orbits on the pseudo-Riemannian symmetric space $G_{2(2)}/(SL(2) \cdot SL(2))$. These two orbits are inequivalent in the sense that they are distinguished by the existence of integrable $L$-invariant complex or para-complex structures.

Non-extremal and non-BPS extremal five-dimensional black strings from generalized special real geometry

We construct non-extremal as well as extremal black string solutions in minimal five-dimensional supergravity coupled to vector multiplets using dimensional reduction to three Euclidean dimensions. Our method does not assume that the scalar manifold is a symmetric space, and applies as well to a class of non-supersymmetric theories governed by a generalization of special real geometry. We find that five-dimensional black string solutions correspond to geodesics in a specific totally geodesic para-Kähler submanifold of the scalar manifold of the dimensionally reduced theory, and identify the subset of geodesics that corresponds to regular black string solutions in five dimensions. BPS and non-BPS extremal solutions are distinguished by whether the corresponding geodesics are along the eigendirections of the para-complex structure or not, a characterization which carries over to non-supersymmetric theories. For non-extremal black strings the values of the scalars at the outer and inner horizon are not independent integration constants but determined by certain functions of the charges and moduli. By lifting solutions from three to four dimensions we obtain non-extremal versions of small black holes, and find that while the outer horizon takes finite size, the inner horizon is still degenerate.

Conification of Kähler and hyper-Kähler manifolds

Given a Kähler manifold $M$ endowed with a Hamiltonian Killing vector field $Z$, we construct a conical Kähler manifold $\hat{M}$ such that $M$ is recovered as a Kähler quotient of $\hat{M}$. Similarly, given a hyper-Kähler manifold $(M,g,J_1,J_2,J_3)$ endowed with a Killing vector field $Z$, Hamiltonian with respect to the Kähler form of $J_1$ and satisfying $\mathcal{L}_ZJ_2= -2J_3$, we construct a hyper-Kähler cone $\hat{M}$ such that $M$ is a certain hyper-Kähler quotient of $\hat{M}$. In this way, we recover a theorem by Haydys. Our work is motivated by the problem of relating the supergravity c-map to the rigid c-map. We show that any hyper-Kähler manifold in the image of the c-map admits a Killing vector field with the above properties. Therefore, it gives rise to a hyper-Kähler cone, which in turn defines a quaternionic Kähler manifold. Our results for the signature of the metric and the sign of the scalar curvature are consistent with what we know about the supergravity c-map.

Developments in special geometry

We review the special geometry of N = 2 supersymmetric vector and hypermultiplets with emphasis on recent developments and applications. A new formulation of the local c-map based on the Hesse potential and special real coordinates is presented. Other recent developments include the Euclidean version of special geometry, and generalizations of special geometry to non-supersymmetric theories. As applications we disucss the proof that the local r-map and c-map preserve geodesic completeness, and the construction of four- and five-dimensional static solutions through dimensional reduction over time. The shared features of the real, complex and quaternionic version of special geometry are stressed throughout.

Non-extremal black holes from the generalised r-map

We review the timelike dimensional reduction of a class of five-dimensional theories that generalises 5D, N = 2 supergravity coupled to vector multiplets. As an application we construct instanton solutions to the four-dimensional Euclidean theory, and investigate the criteria for solutions to lift to static non-extremal black holes in five dimensions. We focus specifically on two classes of models: STU-like models, and models with a block diagonal target space metric. For STU-like models the second order equations of motion of the four-dimensional theory can be solved explicitly, and we obtain the general solution. For block diagonal models we find a restricted class of solutions, where the number of independent scalar fields depends on the number of blocks. When lifting these solutions to five dimensions we show, by explicit calculation, that one obtains static non-extremal black holes with scalar fields that take finite values on the horizon only if the number of integration constants reduces by exactly half.

Conformal Aspects of Spinor-Vector Duality

We present a detailed study of various aspects of Spinor-Vector duality in Heterotic string compactifications and expose its origin in terms of the internal conformal field theory. In particular, we illustrate the main features of the duality map by using simple toroidal orbifolds preserving N_4 = 1 and N_4 = 2 spacetime supersymmetries in four dimensions. We explain how the duality map arises in this context by turning on special values of the Wilson lines around the compact cycles of the manifold. We argue that in models with N_4 = 2 spacetime supersymmetry, the interpolation between the Spinor-Vector dual vacua can be continuously realized. We trace the origin of the Spinor-Vector duality map to the presence of underlying N = (2, 2) and N = (4, 4) SCFTs, and explicitly show that the induced spectral-flow in the twisted sectors is responsible for the observed duality. The isomorphism between current algebra representations gives rise to a number of chiral character identities, reminiscent of the recently-discovered MSDS symmetry.

Euclidean Actions, Instantons, Solitons and Supersymmetry

Theories with axionic scalars admit three different Euclidean formulations, obtained by Wick rotation, Wick rotation combined with analytic continuation of the axionic scalars, and Wick rotation combined with Hodge dualization. We investigate the relation between these formulations for a class of theories which contains the sigma models of N=2 vector multiplets as a special case. It is shown that semi-classical amplitudes can be expressed equivalently using the two types of axionic actions, while the Hodge dualized version gives a different value for the instanton action unless the integration constants associated with the axion fields are chosen in a particular way. With this choice the instanton action is equal to the mass of the soliton or black hole obtained by dimensional lifting with respect to time. For supersymmetric models we use the Euclidean supersymmetry algebra to derive a Euclidean BPS condition, and we identify a geometrical criterion which distinguishes BPS from non-BPS extremal solutions.

Domain Walls, Hitchin's Flow Equations and G_2-Manifolds

We construct BPS domain wall solutions of the effective action of type-IIA string theory compactified on a half-flat six-manifold. The flow equations for the vector and hypermultiplet scalars are shown to be equivalent to Hitchin's flow equations, implying that our domain walls can be lifted to solutions of ten-dimensional type-IIA supergravity. They take the form R^{1,2} x Y_7, where Y_7 is a G_2-holonomy manifold with boundaries.

Effective Supergravity Actions for Conifold Transitions

We construct gauged supergravity actions which describe the dynamics of M-theory on a Calabi-Yau threefold in the vicinity of a conifold transition. The actions explicitly include N charged hypermultiplets descending from wrapped M2-branes which become massless at the conifold point. While the vector multiplet sector can be treated exactly, we approximate the hypermultiplet sector by the non-compact Wolf spaces X(1+N). The effective action is then uniquely determined by the charges of the wrapped M2-branes.

M-theory cosmologies from singular Calabi-Yau compactifications

We study five-dimensional Kasner cosmologies in a time-dependent Calabi-Yau compactification of M-theory undergoing a flop transition. The dynamics of the additional states, which become massless at the transition point and give rise to a scalar potential, are taken into account using a recently constructed gauged supergravity action. Due to the dynamics of these states the moduli do not show the usual run-away behavior but oscillate around the transition region. Moreover, the solutions typically exhibit short periods of accelerated expansion. We also analyze the interplay between the geometries of moduli space and space-time.

The Kahler Cone as Cosmic Censor

M-theory effects prevent five-dimensional domain-wall and black-hole solutions from developing curvature singularities. While so far this analysis was performed for particular models, we now present a model-independent proof that these solutions do not have naked singularities as long as the Kahler moduli take values inside the extended Kahler cone. As a by-product we obtain information on the regularity of the Kahler-cone metric at boundaries of the Kahler cone and derive relations between the geometry of moduli space and space-time.

Topological Transitions and Enhancon-like Geometries in Calabi-Yau Compactifications of M-Theory

We study the impact of topological phase transitions of the internal Calabi-Yau threefold on the space-time geometry of five-dimensional extremal black holes and black strings. For flop transitions and SU(2) gauge symmetry enhancement we show that solutions can always be continued and that the behaviour of metric, gauge fields and scalars can be characterized in a model independent way. Then we look at supersymmetric solutions which describe naked singularities rather than geometries with a horizon. For black strings we show that the solution cannot become singular as long as the scalar fields take values inside the Kahler cone. For black holes we establish the same result for the elliptic fibrations over the Hirzebruch surfaces F_0, F_1, F_2. These three models exhibit a behaviour similar to the enhancon, since one runs into SU(2) enhancement before reaching the apparent singularity. Using the proper continuation inside the enhancon radius one finds that the solution is regular.

Gauged Supergravity and Singular Calabi-Yau Manifolds

Compactifications of M-theory on singular manifolds contain additional charged massless states descending from M-branes wrapped on vanishing cycles. We construct the first explicit example of a complete supergravity Lagrangian that includes such extra states. This is done for a compactification on a Calabi-Yau threefold that develops a genus zero curve of A_1 singularities at the boundary of the Kähler cone with a resulting SU(2) gauge symmetry enhancement. The corresponding SU(2) gauged supergravity Lagrangian includes two charged and two neutral vector multiplets, and turns out to be uniquely fixed by the Calabi-Yau geometry and by the effective ungauged Lagrangian describing the Coulomb branch. One can see explicitly how resolving the singularity corresponds to a supersymmetric Higgs effect in the gauged supergravity description. The elementary transformation relating the two families of smooth Calabi-Yau resolutions of the singularity acts as the SU(2) Weyl twist. The resulting structure appears to be very rigid and is likely to apply to other types of singularities and manifolds as well.

Black Hole Entropy, Special Geometry and Strings

We review work done over the last years on the macroscopic and microscopic entropy of supersymmetric black holes in fourdimensional N=2 supergravity and in N=2 compactifications of string theory and M-theory. Particular emphasis is put on the crucial role of higher curvature terms and of modifications of the area law in obtaining agreement between the macroscopic entropy, which is a geometric property of black hole solutions and the microscopic entropy, which is computed by state counting in Calabi-Yau compactifications of string or M-theory. We also discuss invariance properties of the entropy under stringy T-duality and S-duality transformations in N=2,4 compactifications in presence of higher curvature terms. In order to make the paper self-contained we review the laws of black hole mechanics in higher derivative gravity, the definition of entropy as a surface charge, the superconformal off-shell description of N=2 supergravity, special geometry, and N=2 compactifications of heterotic and type II string theory and of M-theory.

Corrections to macroscopic supersymmetric black-hole entropy

We determine the corrections to the entropy of extremal black holes arising from terms quadratic in the Riemann tensor in $N=2, D=4$ supergravity theories. We follow Wald's proposal to modify the Bekenstein-Hawking area law. The new entropy formula, whose value only depends on the electric/magnetic charges, is expressed in terms of a single holomorphic function and is consistent with electric-magnetic duality. For string effective field theories arising from Calabi-Yau compactifications, our result for the entropy of a certain class of extremal black-hole solutions fully agrees with the counting of microstates performed some time ago by Maldacena, Strominger, Witten and by Vafa.

Deviations from the Area Law for Supersymmetric Black Holes

We review modifications of the Bekenstein-Hawking area law for black hole entropy in the presence of higher-derivative interactions. In four-dimensional N=2 compactifications of string theory or M-theory these modifications are crucial for finding agreement between the macroscopic entropy obtained from supergravity and the microscopic entropy obtained by counting states in string or M-theory. Our discussion is based on the effective Wilsonian action, which in the context of N=2 supersymmetric theories is defined in terms of holomorphic quantities. At the end we briefly indicate how to incorporate non-holomorphic corrections.

Dual Heterotic Black-Holes in Four and Two Dimensions

We consider a class of extremal and non-extremal four-dimensional black-hole solutions occuring in toroidally compactified heterotic string theory, whose ten-dimensional interpretation involves a Kaluza-Klein monopole and a five-brane. We show that these four-dimensional solutions can be connected to extremal and non-extremal two-dimensional heterotic black-hole solutions through a change in the asymptotic behaviour of the harmonic functions associated with the Kaluza-Klein monopole and with the five-brane. This change in the asymptotic behaviour can be achieved by a sequence of S and T-S-T duality transformations in four dimensions. These transformations are implemented by performing a reduction on a two-torus with Lorentzian signature. We argue that the same mechanism can be applied to extremal and non-extremal black-hole solutions in the FHSV model.

Instanton Numbers and Exchange Symmetries in $N=2$ Dual String Pairs

In this note, we comment on Calabi-Yau spaces with Hodge numbers $h_{1,1}=3$ and $h_{2,1}=243$. We focus on the Calabi-Yau space $WP_{1,1,2,8,12}(24)$ and show how some of its instanton numbers are related to coefficients of certain modular forms. We also comment on the relation of four dimensional exchange symmetries in certain $N=2$ dual models to six dimensional heterotic/heterotic string duality.

Non-perturbative monodromies in N=2 heterotic string vacua

We address non-perturbative effects and duality symmetries in $N=2$ heterotic string theories in four dimensions. Specifically, we consider how each of the four lines of enhanced gauge symmetries in the perturbative moduli space of $N=2$ $T_2$ compactifications is split into 2 lines where monopoles and dyons become massless. This amounts to considering non-perturbative effects originating from enhanced gauge symmetries at the microscopic string level. We show that the perturbative and non-perturbative monodromies consistently lead to the results of Seiberg-Witten upon identication of a consistent truncation procedure from local to rigid $N=2$ supersymmetry.

Threshold Corrections and Symmetry Enhancement in String Compactifications

We present the computation of threshold functions for Abelian orbifold compactifications. Specifically, starting from the massive, moduli-dependent string spectrum after compactification, we derive the threshold functions as target space duality invariant free energies (sum over massive string states). In particular we work out the dependence on the continuous Wilson line moduli fields. In addition we concentrate on the physically interesting effect that at certain critical points in the orbifold moduli spaces additional massless states appear in the string spectrum leading to logarithmic singularities in the threshold functions. We discuss this effect for the gauge coupling threshold corrections; here the appearance of additional massless states is directly related to the Higgs effect in string theory. In addition the singularities in the threshold functions are relevant for the loop corrections to the gravitational coupling constants.

Orbifold Compactifications with continuous Wilson lines

We identify the untwisted moduli of heterotic orbifold compactifications for the case, when the gauge twist is realized by a rotation. The Wilson lines are found to have both continuous and discrete parts. For the case of the standard Z(3) orbifold we classify all possibilities of breaking the gauge group E(6) times SU(3) by nine of the eighteen Wilson moduli and by additional discrete Wilson lines.
