Large deviations for the two-dimensional two-component plasma

We derive a large deviations principle for the two-dimensional two-component plasma in a box. As a consequence, we obtain a variational representation for the free energy, and also show that the macroscopic empirical measure of either positive or negative charges converges to the uniform measure. An appendix, written by Wei Wu, discusses applications to the supercritical complex Gaussian multiplicative chaos.

Local microscopic behavior for 2D Coulomb gases

The study of two-dimensional Coulomb gases lies at the interface of statistical physics and non-Hermitian random matrix theory. In this paper we give a large deviation principle (LDP) for the empirical fields obtained, under the canonical Gibbs measure, by zooming around a point in the bulk of the equilibrium measure, up to the finest averaging scale. The rate function is given by the sum of the "renormalized energy" of Serfaty et al. weighted by the inverse temperature, and of the specific relative entropy. We deduce a local law which quantifies the convergence of the empirical measures of the particles to the equilibrium measure, up to the finest scale.

Logarithmic, Coulomb and Riesz energy of point processes

We define a notion of logarithmic, Coulomb and Riesz interactions in any dimension for random systems of infinite charged point configurations with a uniform background of opposite sign. We connect this interaction energy with the "renormalized energy" studied by Serfaty et al., which appears in the free energy functional governing the microscopic behavior of logarithmic, Coulomb and Riesz gases. Minimizers of this functional include the Sine-beta processes in the one-dimensional Log-gas case. Using our explicit expression (inspired by the work of Borodin-Serfaty) we prove their convergence to the Poisson process in the high-temperature limit as well as a crystallization result in the low-temperature limit for one-dimensional systems.

A Uniqueness Result for Minimizers of the 1D Log-gas Renormalized Energy

Sandier and Serfaty studied the one-dimensional Log-gas model, in particular they gave a crystallization result by showing that the one-dimensional lattice $\mathbb{z}$ is a minimizer for the so-called renormalized energy which they obtained as a limit of the $N$-particle Log-gas Hamiltonian for $N \to \infty$. However, this minimizer is not unique among infinite point configurations (for example small perturbations of $\mathbb{z}$ leave the renormalized energy unchanged). In this paper, we establish that uniqueness holds at the level of (stationary) point processes, the only minimizer being given by averaging $\mathbb{z}$ over a choice of the origin in $[0,1]$. This is proved by showing a quantitative estimate on the two-point correlation function of a process in terms of its renormalized energy.
