Coeval Observations of a Complete Sample of Blazars with Effelsberg, IRAM 30m, and Planck

We present the outline and first results of a project using the synergies of the long term blazar radiomillimetre monitoring program F-GAMMA, the continued scanning of the millimetre-submillimetre sky by the Planck satellite, together with several dedicated observing programs at the Effelsberg 100m telescope, to obtain a data sample unprecedented in both time resolution and frequency span.

High resolution mm-VLBI imaging of Cygnus A

At a distance of 249 Mpc ($z$=0.056), Cygnus A is the only powerful FR II radio galaxy for which a detailed sub-parsec scale imaging of the base of both jet and counter-jet can be obtained. Observing with VLBI at millimeter wavelengths is fundamental for this object, as it uncovers those regions which appear self-absorbed or free-free absorbed by a circumnuclear torus at longer wavelengths. We performed 7 mm Global VLBI observations, achieving ultra-high resolution imaging on scales down to 90 $μ$as. This resolution corresponds to a linear scale of only $\sim$400 Schwarzschild radii. We studied the transverse structure of the jets through a pixel-based analysis, and kinematic properties of the main emission features by modeling the interferometric visibilities with two-dimensional Gaussian components. Both jets appear limb-brightened, and their opening angles are relatively large ($ϕ_\mathrm {j}\sim 10^{\circ}$). The flow is observed to accelerate within the inner-jet up to scales of $\sim$1 pc, while lower speeds and uniform motions are measured further downstream. A single component seen in the counter-jet appears to be stationary. These observational properties are explained assuming the existence of transverse gradient of the bulk Lorentz factor across the jet, consisting of a fast central spine surrounded by a slower boundary layer.

The Nuclear Structure of 3C84 with Space VLBI (RadioAstron) Observations

The radio galaxy 3C84 is a representative of gamma-ray-bright misaligned active galactic nuclei (AGN) and one of the best laboratories to study the radio properties of subparsec scale jets. We discuss here the past and present activity of the nuclear region within the central 1pc and the properties of subparsec-sized components C1, C2 and C3. We compare these results with the high resolution space-VLBI image at 5GHz obtained with the RadioAstron satellite and we shortly discuss the possible correlation of radio emission with the gamma-ray emission.

High-Angular-Resolution and High-Sensitivity Science Enabled by Beamformed ALMA

An international consortium is presently constructing a beamformer for the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in Chile that will be available as a facility instrument. The beamformer will aggregate the entire collecting area of the array into a single, very large aperture. The extraordinary sensitivity of phased ALMA, combined with the extremely fine angular resolution available on baselines to the Northern Hemisphere, will enable transformational new very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations in Bands 6 and 7 (1.3 and 0.8 mm) and provide substantial improvements to existing VLBI arrays in Bands 1 and 3 (7 and 3 mm). The ALMA beamformer will have impact on a variety of scientific topics, including accretion and outflow processes around black holes in active galactic nuclei (AGN), tests of general relativity near black holes, jet launch and collimation from AGN and microquasars, pulsar and magnetar emission processes, the chemical history of the universe and the evolution of fundamental constants across cosmic time, maser science, and astrometry.

Radio-submm flares from blazars in a discontinuous jet model

We present a model in which AGN jets are described by a dense series of plasma blobs, distributed in masses and velocities. The blobs expand and collide, and ultimately form a continuous jet flow as observed on larger scales. When blobs collide, energetic electrons are produced by first order Fermi acceleration, and emit synchrotron radiation at the radio-optical frequencies with a double-broken power law spectrum. The difference of this model to the well-known Marscher&Gear-model is, that in our model shocks are produced on a range of scales, and exist only temporarily, which causes differences in the prediction for the spectral evolution of flares. We apply our model to radio-submm data obtained for 3C454.3, and briefly discuss implications for gamma-ray production.
