Automation of antenna subtraction in colour space: gluonic processes

We present the colourful antenna subtraction method, a reformulation of the antenna subtraction scheme for next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) calculations in QCD. The aim of this new approach is to achieve a general and process-independent construction of the subtraction infrastructure at NNLO. We rely on the predictability of the infrared singularity structure of one- and two-loop amplitudes in colour space to generate virtual subtraction terms and, subsequently, we define an automatable procedure to systematically infer the expression of the real subtraction terms, guided by the correspondence between unintegrated and integrated antenna functions. To demonstrate the applicability of the described approach, we compute the full colour NNLO correction to gluonic three-jet production $pp(gg)\to ggg$, in the gluons-only assumption.

Calculation of the transverse parton distribution functions at next-to-next-to-leading order

We describe the perturbative calculation of the transverse parton distribution functions in all partonic channels up to next-to-next-to-leading order based on a gauge invariant operator definition. We demonstrate the cancellation of light-cone divergences and show that universal process-independent transverse parton distribution functions can be obtained through a refactorization. Our results serve as the first explicit higher-order calculation of these functions starting from first principles, and can be used to perform next-to-next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic $q_T$ resummation for a large class of processes at hadron colliders.

Di-lepton Rapidity Distribution in Drell-Yan Production to Third Order in QCD

We compute for the first time the lepton-pair rapidity distribution in the photon-mediated Drell-Yan process to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^3$LO) in QCD. The calculation is based on the qT-subtraction method, suitably extended to this order for quark-antiquark initiated Born processes. Our results display sizeable QCD corrections at N$^3$LO over the full rapidity region and provide a fully independent confirmation of the recent results for the total Drell-Yan cross section at this order.

Differential N$^3$LO QCD corrections to charged current production at the LHC

Charged current Drell-Yan production at hadron colliders is a benchmark electroweak process. A recent measurement of the W boson mass by the CDF experiment displays a large deviation from the Standard Model prediction. To enable precision phenomenology for this process, we compute the third-order (N$^3$LO) QCD corrections to the rapidity distribution in W boson production and to the transverse mass distribution of its decay products. We study kinematic regions relevant for the LHC experiments and assess the numerical magnitude of uncertainties from electroweak input parameters and parton distribution functions.

Photon Fragmentation in the Antenna Subtraction Formalism

The theoretical description of photon production at particle colliders combines direct photon radiation and fragmentation processes, which can not be separated from each other for definitions of photon isolation used in experimental measurements. The theoretical description of these processes must account for collinear parton-photon configurations, retaining the dependence on the photon momentum fraction, and includes the parton-to-photon fragmentation functions. We extend the antenna subtraction method to include photon fragmentation processes up to next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in QCD. Collinear photon radiation is handled using newly introduced fragmentation antenna functions and associated phase space mappings. We derive the integrated forms of the fragmentation antenna functions and describe their interplay with the mass factorisation of the photon fragmentation functions. The construction principles of antenna subtraction terms up to NNLO for identified photons are outlined, thereby enabling the application of the method to different photon production processes at colliders.

Renormalization of twist-two operators in QCD and its application to singlet splitting functions

Splitting functions govern the scale evolution of parton distribution functions. Through a Mellin transformation, they are related to anomalous dimensions of twist-two operators in the operator product expansion. We study off-shell operator matrix element, where the physical operators mix under renormalization with other gauge-variant operators of the same quantum numbers. We devise a new method to systematically extract the Feynman rules resulting from those operators without knowing the operators themselves. As a first application of the new approach, we independently reproduce the well-known three-loop singlet splitting functions obtained from computations of on-shell quantities.

Theory uncertainties in the fiducial Drell-Yan cross section and distributions

In these proceedings we study various sources of theoretical uncertainty in the Drell-Yan $p_T^{\ell\ell}$ spectrum focussing on the $p_T^{\ell\ell} \lesssim 100\, {\rm GeV}$ region. We consider several perturbative aspects related to the choice of the scale setting adopted in resummed calculations, and we assess their impact on the theoretical prediction both for the differential $p_T^{\ell\ell}$ spectrum and for the $\rm{N}^3\rm{LO}$ fiducial cross section. For both quantities, we find the results obtained with the different setups to be compatible with each other within the quoted uncertainty, highlighting the robustness of the theoretical prediction. In all cases, the experimental LHC data for the $p_T^{\ell\ell}$ spectrum is well described by our calculation.

Fiducial distributions in Higgs and Drell-Yan production at N$^3$LL+NNLO

The perturbative description of certain differential distributions across a wide kinematic range requires the matching of fixed-order perturbation theory with resummation of large logarithmic corrections to all orders. We present precise matched predictions for transverse-momentum distributions in Higgs boson (H) and Drell-Yan pair (DY) production as well as for the closely related ${ϕ^{*}_η}$ distribution at the LHC. The calculation is exclusive in the Born kinematics, and allows for arbitrary fiducial selection cuts on the decay products of the colour singlets, which is of primary relevance for experimental analyses. Our predictions feature very small residual scale uncertainties and display a good convergence of the perturbative series. A comparison of the predictions for DY observables to experimental data at 8 TeV shows a very good agreement within the quoted errors.

Isolated photon and photon+jet production at NNLO QCD accuracy

We describe the calculation of the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD corrections to isolated photon and photon-plus-jet production, and discuss how the experimental hadron-level photon definition and isolation criteria can be approximated in the theoretical parton-level calculation. The NNLO corrections lead to a considerable reduction of the theory uncertainty on the predictions, typically to less than five per cent, and enable an improved description of experimental measurements from ATLAS and CMS.

NNLO QCD Corrections for Higgs-plus-jet Production in the Four-lepton Decay Mode

We present the computation of Higgs boson production in association with a jet at the LHC including QCD corrections up to NNLO. The calculation includes the subsequent decay of the Higgs boson into four leptons, allowing for the full reconstruction of the final-state kinematics. In anticipation of improved LHC measurements based on the full Run II dataset, we present a study for single- and double-differential cross sections within the fiducial volume as defined in prior ATLAS analyses. Higher-order corrections are found to have a sizeable impact on both normalisation and shape of differential cross sections.

Phenomenology of NNLO jet production at the LHC and its impact on parton distributions

We present a systematic investigation of jet production at hadron colliders from a phenomenological point of view, with the dual aim of providing a validation of theoretical calculations and guidance to future determinations of parton distributions (PDFs). We account for all available inclusive jet and dijet production measurements from ATLAS and CMS at 7 and 8 TeV by including them in a global PDF determination, and comparing to theoretical predictions at NNLO QCD supplemented by electroweak (EW) corrections. We assess the compatibility of the PDFs, specifically the gluon, obtained before and after inclusion of the jet data. We compare the single-inclusive jet and dijet observables in terms of perturbative behaviour upon inclusion of QCD and EW corrections, impact on the PDFs, and global fit quality. In the single-inclusive case, we also investigate the role played by different scale choices and the stability of the results upon changes in modelling of the correlated experimental systematics.

Scale and isolation sensitivity of diphoton distributions at the LHC

Precision measurements of diphoton distributions at the LHC display some tension with theory predictions, obtained at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in QCD. We revisit the theoretical uncertainties arising from the approximation of the experimental photon isolation by smooth-cone isolation, and from the choice of functional form for the renormalisation and factorisation scales. We find that the resulting variations are substantial overall, and enhanced in certain regions. We discuss the infrared sensitivity at the cone boundaries in cone-based isolation in related distributions. Finally, we compare predictions made with alternative choices of dynamical scale and isolation prescriptions to experimental data from ATLAS at 8 TeV, observing improved agreement. This contrasts with previous results, highlighting that scale choice and isolation prescription are potential sources of theoretical uncertainty that were previously underestimated.

Jet cross sections at the LHC and the quest for higher precision

We perform a phenomenological study of $Z$ plus jet, Higgs plus jet and di-jet production at the Large Hadron Collider. We investigate in particular the dependence of the leading jet cross section on the jet radius as a function of the jet transverse momentum. Theoretical predictions are obtained using perturbative QCD calculations at the next-to and next-to-next-to-leading order, using a range of renormalization and factorization scales. The fixed order predictions are compared to results obtained from matching next-to-leading order calculations to parton showers. A study of the scale dependence as a function of the jet radius is used to provide a better estimate of the scale uncertainty for small jet sizes. The non-perturbative corrections as a function of jet radius are estimated from different generators.

CP-even scalar boson production via gluon fusion at the LHC

In view of the searches at the LHC for scalar particle resonances in addition to the 125 GeV Higgs boson, we present the cross section for a CP-even scalar produced via gluon fusion at N3LO in perturbative QCD assuming that it couples directly to gluons in an effective theory approach. We refine our prediction by taking into account the possibility that the scalar couples to the top-quark and computing the corresponding contributions through NLO in perturbative QCD. We assess the theoretical uncertainties of the cross section due to missing higher-order QCD effects and we provide the necessary information for obtaining the cross section value and uncertainty from our results in specific scenarios beyond the Standard Model. We also give detailed results for the case of a 750 GeV scalar, which will be the subject of intense experimental studies.

Higgs plus one jet production at NNLO

We present the computation of Higgs boson plus one jet production at NNLO at the LHC. The computation is carried out in the heavy-top-quark approximation and using the antenna subtraction formalism to handle the IR divergent structure of the individual contributions. All channels and all colours are included. We illustrate aspects of the subtraction formalism and present results for the total cross section as well as distributions in the kinematical variables using a realistic experimental setting. We make a comparison between our results and recent ATLAS data for $H+j$ production.

preprint2016arXiv

High precision determination of the gluon fusion Higgs boson cross-section at the LHC

We present the most precise value for the Higgs boson cross-section in the gluon-fusion production mode at the LHC. Our result is based on a perturbative expansion through N$^3$LO in QCD, in an effective theory where the top-quark is assumed to be infinitely heavy, while all other Standard Model quarks are massless. We combine this result with QCD corrections to the cross-section where all finite quark-mass effects are included exactly through NLO. In addition, electroweak corrections and the first corrections in the inverse mass of the top-quark are incorporated at three loops. We also investigate the effects of threshold resummation, both in the traditional QCD framework and following a SCET approach, which resums a class of $π^2$ contributions to all orders. We assess the uncertainty of the cross-section from missing higher-order corrections due to both perturbative QCD effects beyond N$^3$LO and unknown mixed QCD-electroweak effects. In addition, we determine the sensitivity of the cross-section to the choice of parton distribution function (PDF) sets and to the parametric uncertainty in the strong coupling constant and quark masses. For a Higgs mass of $m_H = 125~{\rm GeV}$ and an LHC center-of-mass energy of $13~{\rm TeV}$, our best prediction for the gluon fusion cross-section is \[ σ= 48.58\,{\rm pb} {}^{+2.22\, {\rm pb}\, (+4.56\%)}_{-3.27\, {\rm pb}\, (-6.72\%)} \mbox{ (theory)} \pm 1.56 \,{\rm pb}\, (3.20\%) \mbox{ (PDF+$α_s$)} \]

Precise QCD predictions for the production of dijet final states in deep inelastic scattering

The production of two-jet final states in deep inelastic scattering is an important QCD precision observable. We compute it for the first time to next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in perturbative QCD. Our calculation is fully differential in the lepton and jet variables and allows one to impose cuts on the jets both in the laboratory and the Breit frame. We observe that the NNLO corrections are moderate in size, except at kinematical edges, and that their inclusion leads to a substantial reduction of the scale variation uncertainty on the predictions. Our results will enable the inclusion of deep inelastic dijet data in precision phenomenology studies.

Pseudo-scalar Form Factors at Three Loops in QCD

The coupling of a pseudo-scalar Higgs boson to gluons is mediated through a heavy quark loop. In the limit of large quark mass, it is described by an effective Lagrangian that only admits light degrees of freedom. In this effective theory, we compute the three-loop massless QCD corrections to the form factor that describes the coupling of a pseudo-scalar Higgs boson to gluons. Due to the axial anomaly, the pseudo-scalar operator for the gluonic field strength mixes with the divergence of the axial vector current. Working in dimensional regularization and using the 't~Hooft-Veltman prescription for the axial vector current, we compute the three-loop pseudo-scalar form factors for massless quarks and gluons. Using the universal infrared factorization properties, we independently derive the three-loop operator mixing and finite operator renormalisation from the renormalisation group equation for the form factors, thereby confirming recent results in the operator product expansion. The finite part of the three-loop form factor is an important ingredient to the precise prediction of the pseudo-scalar Higgs boson production cross section at hadron colliders. We discuss potential applications and derive the hard matching coefficient in soft-collinear effective theory.

preprint2015arXiv

The rare decay $H\to Zγ$ in perturbative QCD

The rare Higgs boson decay $H\to Zγ$ is forbidden at tree-level. In the Standard Model, it is loop-mediated through a $W$ boson or a heavy quark. We analytically compute the QCD correction to the heavy quark loop, confirming earlier purely numerical results, that were obtained for on-shell renormalization. The small quark mass expansion of the decay matrix element contains only single-logarithmic contributions at each perturbative order, which is in contrast to the double logarithms observed in $H\to γγ$. We investigate the numerical interplay of bottom and top quark contributions, and the dependence of the result on the renormalization scheme.

The two-loop helicity amplitudes for $q \bar q' \to V_1 V_2 \to 4~\mathrm{leptons}$

We compute the two-loop massless QCD corrections to the helicity amplitudes for the production of two massive vector bosons in quark-antiquark annihilation, allowing for an arbitrary virtuality of the vector bosons: $q \bar q' \to V_1V_2$. Combining with the leptonic decay currents, we obtain the full two-loop QCD description of the corresponding electroweak four-lepton production processes. The calculation is performed by projecting the two-loop diagrams onto an appropriate basis of Lorentz structures. All two-loop Feynman integrals are reduced to a basis of master integrals, which are then computed using the differential equations method and optimised for numerical performance. We provide a public C++ code which allows for fast and precise numerical evaluations of the amplitudes.

Higgs boson gluon-fusion production at threshold in N3LO QCD

We present the cross-section for the threshold production of the Higgs boson at hadron-colliders at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N3LO) in perturbative QCD. We present an analytic expression for the partonic cross-section at threshold and the impact of these corrections on the numerical estimates for the hadronic cross-section at the LHC. With this result we achieve a major milestone towards a complete evaluation of the cross-section at N3LO which will reduce the theoretical uncertainty in the determination of the strengths of the Higgs boson interactions.

Higgs boson gluon-fusion production beyond threshold in N3LO QCD

In this article, we compute the gluon fusion Higgs boson cross-section at N3LO through the second term in the threshold expansion. This calculation constitutes a major milestone towards the full N3LO cross section. Our result has the best formal accuracy in the threshold expansion currently available, and includes contributions from collinear regions besides subleading corrections from soft and hard regions, as well as certain logarithmically enhanced contributions for general kinematics. We use our results to perform a critical appraisal of the validity of the threshold approximation at N3LO in perturbative QCD.

Second order QCD corrections to gluonic jet production at hadron colliders

We report on the calculation of the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD corrections to the production of two gluonic jets at hadron colliders. In previous work, we discussed gluonic dijet production in the gluon-gluon channel. Here, for the first time, we update our numerical results to include the leading colour contribution to the production of two gluonic jets via quark-antiquark scattering.

The $Hb\bar{b}$ form factor to three loops in QCD

We compute the three-loop QCD corrections to the vertex function for the Yukawa coupling of a Higgs boson to a pair of bottom quarks in the limit of vanishing quark masses. This QCD form factor is a crucial ingredient to third-order QCD corrections for the production of Higgs bosons in bottom quark fusion, and for the fully differential decay rate of Higgs bosons to bottom quarks. The infrared pole structure of the form factors agrees with the prediction from infrared factorization in QCD.

The Two-Loop Master Integrals for $q \bar{q} \to V V$

We compute the full set of two-loop Feynman integrals appearing in massless two-loop four-point functions with two off-shell legs with the same invariant mass. These integrals allow to determine the two-loop corrections to the amplitudes for vector boson pair production at hadron colliders, $q \bar{q} \to V V$, and thus to compute this process to next-to-next-to-leading order accuracy in QCD. The master integrals are derived using the method of differential equations, employing a canonical basis for the integrals. We obtain analytical results for all integrals, expressed in terms of multiple polylogarithms. We optimize our results for numerical evaluation by employing functions which are real valued for physical scattering kinematics and allow for an immediate power series expansion.

Transverse Parton Distribution Functions at Next-To-Next-To-Leading-Order

We present a perturbative calculation of the transverse parton distribution functions in all partonic channels up to next-to-next-to-leading order based on a gauge invariant operator definition. We demonstrate for the first time that such a definition works beyond the first non-trivial order. We extract the coefficient functions relevant for a next-to-next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic $q_T$ resummation in a large class of processes at hadron colliders.

Two-loop splitting amplitudes and the single-real contribution to inclusive Higgs production at N3LO

The factorisation of QCD matrix elements in the limit of two external partons becoming collinear is described by process-independent splitting amplitudes, which can be expanded systematically in perturbation theory. Working in conventional dimensional regularisation, we compute the two-loop splitting amplitudes for all simple collinear splitting processes, including subleading terms in the regularisation parameter. Our results are then applied to derive an analytical expression for the two-loop single-real contribution to inclusive Higgs boson production in gluon fusion to fourth order (N3LO) in perturbative QCD.

Diphoton + jets at NLO

We present the next-to-leading order QCD corrections to the production of a photon pair in association with one or two jets. This class of processes constitutes an important background for Higgs physics at the LHC. For the one jet process we include photon fragmentation contributions and perform a comparison between different photon isolation criteria and various isolation parameters. The two jet calculation has been performed using a smooth cone isolation criterion. We find that the NLO QCD corrections are substantial and can lead to distortions of differential distributions.

NLO QCD matrix elements + parton showers in e+e- -> hadrons

We present a new approach to combine multiple NLO parton-level calculations matched to parton showers into a single inclusive event sample. The method provides a description of hard multi-jet configurations at next-to leading order in the perturbative expansion of QCD, and it is supplemented with the all-orders resummed modelling of jet fragmentation provided by the parton shower. The formal accuracy of this technique is discussed in detail, invoking the example of electron-positron annihilation into hadrons. We focus on the effect of renormalisation scale variations in particular. Comparison with experimental data from LEP underlines that this novel formalism describes data with a theoretical accuracy that has hitherto not been achieved in standard Monte Carlo event generators.

NNLO QCD corrections to dijet production at hadron colliders

In this talk we present the calculation of next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD corrections to dijet production and related observables at hadron colliders in the purely gluonic channel. Results for this channel are obtained keeping all orders of $N_C$ in the colour expansion. We show that the NNLO correction significantly reduces the scale uncertainty compared to next-to-leading order (NLO). We present the NNLO double-differential single jet inclusive cross section where jets are reconstructed using the anti-$k_T$ jet algorithm and show the dependence on the jet resolution parameter $R$.

Precise QCD predictions for the production of a photon pair in association with two jets

We compute the cross section for the production of a high-mass photon pair in association with two hadronic jets to next-to-leading order (NLO) in quantum chromodynamics (QCD). Our results allow for the first time to reliably predict the absolute normalisation of this process, and demonstrate that the shape of important kinematical distributions is modified by higher-order effects. The perturbative corrections will be an important ingredient to precision studies of Higgs boson properties from its production in association with two jets.

The two-loop soft current in dimensional regularization

The soft current describes the factorization behavior of quantum chromodynamics (QCD) scattering amplitudes in the limit of vanishing energy of one of the external partons. It is process-independent and can be expanded in a perturbative series in the coupling constant. To all orders in the dimensional regularization parameter, we compute the two-loop correction to the soft current for processes involving two hard partons.

Two-Loop Master Integrals for $q \bar{q} \to V V$: the Planar Topologies

The two-loop QCD corrections to vector boson pair production at hadron colliders involve a new class of Feynman integrals: two-loop four-point functions with two off-shell external legs. We describe their reduction to a small set of master integrals by solving linear relations among them. We then use differential equations in the external invariants to compute all master integrals that are relevant to planar Feynman amplitudes. Our results are expressed analytically in terms of generalised harmonic polylogarithms. The calculation relies heavily on techniques that exploit the algebraic structure of these functions, which we describe in detail.

Antenna subtraction at NNLO with hadronic initial states: double real initial-initial configurations

The antenna subtraction method handles real radiation contributions in higher order corrections to jet observables. The method is based on antenna functions, which encapsulate all unresolved radiation between a pair of hard radiator partons. To apply this method to compute hadron collider observables, initial-initial antenna functions with both radiators in the initial state are required in unintegrated and integrated forms. In view of extending the antenna subtraction method to next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) calculations at hadron colliders, we derive the full set of initial-initial double real radiation antenna functions in integrated form.

preprint2012arXiv

Double Virtual corrections for gluon scattering at NNLO

We use the antenna subtraction method to isolate the double virtual infrared singularities present in gluonic scattering amplitudes at next-to-next-to-leading order. In previous papers, we derived the subtraction terms that rendered (a) the double real radiation tree-level process finite in the single and double unresolved regions of phase space and (b) the mixed single real radiation one-loop process both finite and well behaved in the unresolved regions of phase space. Here, we show how to construct the double virtual subtraction term using antenna functions with both initial- and final-state partons which remove the explicit infrared poles present in the two-loop amplitude. As an explicit example, we write down the subtraction term for the four-gluon two-loop process. The infrared poles are explicitly and locally cancelled in all regions of phase space leaving a finite remainder that can be safely evaluated numerically in four-dimensions.

Power corrections in the dispersive model for a determination of the strong coupling constant from the thrust distribution

In the context of the dispersive model for non-perturbative corrections, we extend the leading renormalon subtraction to NNLO for the thrust distribution in $e^+e^-$ annihilation. Within this framework, using a NNLL+NNLO perturbative description and including bottom quark mass effects to NLO, we analyse data in the centre-of-mass energy range $\sqrt{s}=14-206$ GeV in view of a simultaneous determination of the strong coupling constant and the non-perturbative parameter $α_0$. The fits are performed by matching the resummed and fixed-order predictions both in the R and the log-R matching schemes. The final values in the R scheme are $α_s(M_Z) = 0.1131^{+0.0028}_{-0.0022}$, $α_0(2 {\rm GeV}) = 0.538^{+0.102}_{-0.047}$.

Transverse parton distribution functions at next-to-next-to-leading order: the quark-to-quark case

We present a calculation of the perturbative quark-to-quark transverse parton distribution function at next-to-next-to-leading order based on a gauge invariant operator definition. We demonstrate for the first time that such a definition works beyond the first non-trivial order. We extract from our calculation the coefficient functions relevant for a next-to-next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic $Q_T$ resummation in a large class of processes at hadron colliders.

To apply this method to compute hadron collider observables, initial-initial antenna functions with both radiators in the initial state are required. In view of extending the antenna subtraction method to next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) calculations at hadron colliders, we derive the one-loop initial-initial antenna functions in unintegrated and integrated form.

The three-loop form factor in N=4 super Yang-Mills

In this paper we study the Sudakov form factor in N=4 super Yang-Mills theory to the three-loop order. The latter is expressed in terms of planar and non-planar loop integrals. We show that it is possible to choose a representation in which each loop integral has uniform transcendentality. We verify analytically the expected exponentiation of the infrared divergences with the correct values of the three-loop cusp and collinear anomalous dimensions in dimensional regularisation. We find that the form factor in N=4 super Yang-Mills can be related to the leading transcendentality part of the quark and gluon form factors in QCD. We also study the ultraviolet properties of the form factor in D>4 dimensions, and find unexpected cancellations, resulting in an improved ultraviolet behaviour.

Two-Loop Soft Corrections and Resummation of the Thrust Distribution in the Dijet Region

The thrust distribution in electron-positron annihilation is a classical precision QCD observable. Using renormalization group (RG) evolution in Laplace space, we perform the resummation of logarithmically enhanced corrections in the dijet limit, $T\to 1$ to next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic (NNLL) accuracy. We independently derive the two-loop soft function for the thrust distribution and extract an analytical expression for the NNLL resummation coefficient $g_3$. To combine the resummed expressions with the fixed-order results, we derive the $\log(R)$-matching and $R$-matching of the NNLL approximation to the fixed-order NNLO distribution.

Electroweak corrections to hadronic event shapes

We report on a recent calculation of the electroweak O(α^3α_s) corrections to 3-jet production and related event-shape observables at e+e- colliders. The calculation properly accounts for the experimental photon isolation criteria and for the corrections to the total hadronic cross section. Corrections to the normalised event-shape distributions, which are exemplarily discussed here for the thrust distribution at LEP and linear-collider energies, turn out to be at the few-per-cent level and show remnants of the radiative return to the Z pole even after inclusion of appropriate cuts.

Electroweak corrections to hadronic event shapes and jet production in e+e- annihilation

We present a complete calculation of the electroweak O(alpha^3 alpha_s) corrections to three-jet production and related event-shape observables at electron--positron colliders. The Z-boson resonance is described within the complex-mass scheme, rendering the calculation valid both in the resonance and off-shell regions. Higher-order initial-state radiation is included in the leading-logarithmic approximation. We properly account for the corrections to the total hadronic cross section and for the experimental photon isolation criteria. To this end we implement contributions of the quark-to-photon fragmentation function both in the slicing and subtraction formalism. The effects of the electroweak corrections on various event-shape distributions and on the three-jet rate are studied. They are typically at the few-per-cent level, and remnants of the radiative return are found even after inclusion of appropriate cuts.

Hadronic final states in DIS with Sherpa

We present an extension of the multi-purpose Monte-Carlo event generator Sherpa for processes in deeply inelastic lepton-nucleon scattering. Hadronic final states in this kinematical setting are characterised by the presence of multiple kinematical scales, which were up to now accounted for only by specific resummations in individual kinematical regions. An extension of a known method for merging truncated parton showers with higher-order tree-level matrix elements allows to obtain predictions which are reliable in all kinematical limits.

Integrated dipoles with MadDipole in the MadGraph framework

Heading towards a full automation of next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD corrections, one important ingredient is the analytical integration over the one-particle phase space of the unresolved particle that is necessary when adding the subtraction terms to the virtual corrections. We present the implementation of these integrated dipoles in the MadGraph framework. The result is a package that allows an automated calculation for the NLO real emission parts of an arbitrary process.

NNLO Antenna Subtraction with One Hadronic Initial State

In this talk we present the extension of the antenna subtraction method to include initial states containing one hadron at NNLO. We sketch the requirements for the different necessary subtraction terms, and we explain how the antenna functions are integrated over the appropriate phase space by reducing the integrals to a small set of master integrals. Where applicable, our results for the integrated antennae were cross-checked against the known NNLO coefficient functions for deep inelastic scattering processes.

Hadronic final states in deep-inelastic scattering with Sherpa

We extend the multi-purpose Monte-Carlo event generator Sherpa to include processes in deeply inelastic lepton-nucleon scattering. Hadronic final states in this kinematical setting are characterised by the presence of multiple kinematical scales, which were up to now accounted for only by specific resummations in individual kinematical regions. Using an extension of the recently introduced method for merging truncated parton showers with higher-order tree-level matrix elements, it is possible to obtain predictions which are reliable in all kinematical limits. Different hadronic final states, defined by jets or individual hadrons, in deep-inelastic scattering are analysed and the corresponding results are compared to HERA data. The various sources of theoretical uncertainties of the approach are discussed and quantified. The extension to deeply inelastic processes provides the opportunity to validate the merging of matrix elements and parton showers in multi-scale kinematics inaccessible in other collider environments. It also allows to use HERA data on hadronic final states in the tuning of hadronisation models.
