A path integral approach to the dynamics of a random chain with rigid constraints

In this work the dynamics of a freely jointed random chain which fluctuates at constant temperature in some viscous medium is studied. The chain is regarded as a system of small particles which perform a brownian motion and are subjected to rigid constraints which forbid the breaking of the chain. For simplicity, all interactions among the particles have been switched off and the number of dimensions has been limited to two. The problem of describing the fluctuations of the chain in the limit in which it becomes a continuous system is solved using a path integral approach, in which the constraints are imposed with the insertion in the path integral of suitable Dirac delta functions. It is shown that the probability distribution of the possible conformations in which the fluctuating chain can be found during its evolution in time coincides with the partition function of a field theory which is a generalization of the nonlinear sigma model in two dimensions. Both the probability distribution and the generating functional of the correlation functions of the positions of the beads are computed explicitly in a semiclassical approximation for a ring-shaped chain.

Collective Dynamics of Random Polyampholytes

We consider the Langevin dynamics of a semi-dilute system of chains which are random polyampholytes of average monomer charge $q$ and with a fluctuations in this charge of the size $Q^{-1}$ and with freely floating counter-ions in the surrounding. We cast the dynamics into the functional integral formalism and average over the quenched charge distribution in order to compute the dynamic structure factor and the effective collective potential matrix. The results are given for small charge fluctuations. In the limit of finite $q$ we then find that the scattering approaches the limit of polyelectrolyte solutions.

Dynamics of dense Polyelectrolyte Solutions

We investigate a system of dense polyelectrolytes in solution. The Langevin dynamics of the system with linearized hydrodynamics is formulated in the functional integral formalism and a transformation made to collective coordinates. Within a dynamical Random Phase Approximation (RPA) integration over the counter- and salt ions produces the Debye-Hückel-like screening of the Coulomb interactions with dependence on the frequency only as part of a more complicated coupling structure. We investigate the dynamics of the structure factor as well as the collective diffusion coefficient and comment upon the viscosity of the whole system of polymers with counterions and fluid in the simplest approximation. The coupling of the various components of the system produces nontrivial diffusive behavior. We draw conclusions about the relationship of the three length scales in the present system, i.e. the static screening length, the hydrodynamic screening length and the Debye length.
