Asymptotic behavior for a dissipative nonlinear Schrödinger equation

We consider the Schrödinger equation with nonlinear dissipation \begin{equation*} i \partial _t u +Δu=λ|u|^αu \end{equation*} in RN{\mathbb R}^N , N≥1N\geq1, where λ∈Cλ\in {\mathbb C} with ℑλ<0\Imλ<0. Assuming 2N+2<α<2N\frac {2} {N+2}<α<\frac2N, we give a precise description of the long-time behavior of the solutions (including decay rates in L2L^2 and L∞L^\infty , and asymptotic profile), for a class of arbitrarily large initial data.

Sign-changing self-similar solutions of the nonlinear heat equation with positive initial value

We consider the nonlinear heat equation ut−Δu=∣u∣αuu_t - Δu = |u|^αu on RN{\mathbb R}^N, where α>0α>0 and N≥1N\ge 1. We prove that in the range 0<α<4N−20 < α<\frac {4} {N-2}, for every μ>0μ>0, there exist infinitely many sign-changing, self-similar solutions to the Cauchy problem with initial value u0(x)=μ∣x∣−2αu_0 (x)= μ|x|^{-\frac {2} {α}}. The construction is based on the analysis of the related inverted profile equation. In particular, we construct (sign-changing) self-similar solutions for positive initial values for which it is known that there does not exist any local, nonnegative solution.

Asymptotic behavior for a Schrödinger equation with nonlinear subcritical dissipation

We study the time-asymptotic behavior of solutions of the Schrödinger equation with nonlinear dissipation \begin{equation*} \partial _t u = i Δu + λ|u|^αu \end{equation*} in RN{\mathbb R}^N , N≥1N\geq1, where λ∈Cλ\in {\mathbb C}, ℜλ<0\Re λ<0 and 0<α<2N0<α<\frac2N. We give a precise description of the behavior of the solutions (including decay rates in L2L^2 and L∞L^\infty , and asymptotic profile), for a class of arbitrarily large initial data, under the additional assumption that αα is sufficiently close to 2N\frac2N.

Blowup on an arbitrary compact set for a Schödinger equation with nonlinear source term

We consider the nonlinear Schrödinger equation on RN{\mathbb R}^N , N≥1N\ge 1, \begin{equation*} \partial _t u = i Δu + λ| u |^αu \quad \mbox{on RN{\mathbb R}^N , α>0α>0,} \end{equation*} with λ∈Cλ\in {\mathbb C} and ℜλ>0\Re λ>0, for H1H^1-subcritical nonlinearities, i.e. α>0α>0 and (N−2)α<4(N-2) α< 4. Given a compact set K⊂RNK \subset {\mathbb R}^N , we construct H1H^1 solutions that are defined on (−T,0)(-T,0) for some T>0T>0, and blow up on KK at t=0t=0. The construction is based on an appropriate ansatz. The initial ansatz is simply U0(t,x)=(ℜλ)−1α(−αt+A(x))−1α−iℑλαℜλU_0(t,x) = ( \Re λ)^{- \frac {1} {α}} (-αt + A(x) )^{ -\frac {1} {α} - i \frac {\Im λ} {α\Re λ} }, where A≥0A\ge 0 vanishes exactly on K K , which is a solution of the ODE u′=λ∣u∣αuu'= λ| u |^αu. We refine this ansatz inductively, using ODE techniques. We complete the proof by energy estimates and a compactness argument. This strategy is reminiscent of~[3, 4].

Local existence, global existence, and scattering for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation

In this paper, we construct for every α>0α>0 and λ∈Cλ\in {\mathbb C} a space of initial values for which there exists a local solution of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} iu_t + Δu + λ|u|^αu= 0 \\ u(0,x) = u_0 \end{cases} \end{equation*} on RN{\mathbb R}^N . Moreover, we construct for every α>2Nα>\frac {2} {N} a class of (arbitrarily large) initial values for which there exists a global solution that scatters as t→∞t\to \infty .

A Fujita-type blowup result and low energy scattering for a nonlinear Schrö\-din\-ger equation

In this paper we consider the nonlinear Schrö\-din\-ger equation iut+Δu+κ∣u∣αu=0i u_t +Δu +κ|u|^αu=0. We prove that if α<2Nα<\frac {2} {N} and ℑκ<0\Im κ<0, then every nontrivial H1H^1-solution blows up in finite or infinite time. In the case α>2Nα>\frac {2} {N} and κ∈Cκ\in {\mathbb C}, we improve the existing low energy scattering results in dimensions N≥7N\ge 7. More precisely, we prove that if 8N+N2+16N<α≤4N \frac {8} {N + \sqrt{ N^2 +16N }} < α\le \frac {4} {N} , then small data give rise to global, scattering solutions in H1H^1.

Non-regularity in Hölder and Sobolev spaces of solutions to the semilinear heat and Schrödinger equations

In this paper we study the Cauchy problem for the semilinear heat and Schrödinger equations, with the nonlinear term f(u)=λ∣u∣αu f ( u ) = λ|u|^αu. We show that low regularity of ff (i.e., α>0α>0 but small) limits the regularity of any possible solution for a certain class of smooth initial data. We employ two different methods, which yield two different types of results. On the one hand, we consider the semilinear equation as a perturbation of the ODE wt=f(w)w_t= f(w). This yields in particular an optimal regularity result for the semilinear heat equation in Hölder spaces. In addition, this approach yields ill-posedness results for NLS in certain HsH^s spaces, which depend on the smallness of αα rather than the scaling properties of the equation. Our second method is to consider the semilinear equation as a perturbation of the linear equation via Duhamel's formula. This yields in particular that if αα is sufficiently small and NN sufficiently large, then the nonlinear heat equation is ill-posed in Hs(RN)H^s ({\mathbb R}^N ) for all s≥0s\ge 0.

Finite-time blowup for a complex Ginzburg-Landau equation with linear driving

In this paper, we consider the complex Ginzburg--Landau equation ut=eiθ[Δu+∣u∣αu]+γuu_t = e^{iθ} [Δu + |u|^αu] + γu on RN{\mathbb R}^N , where α>0α>0, γ∈Rγ\in \R and −π/2<θ<π/2-π/2<θ<π/2. By convexity arguments we prove that, under certain conditions on α,θ,γα,θ,γ, a class of solutions with negative initial energy blows up in finite time.

Finite-time blowup for a complex Ginzburg-Landau equation

We prove that negative energy solutions of the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation e−iθut=Δu+∣u∣αue^{-iθ} u_t = Δu+ |u|^α u blow up in finite time, where α>0 and π/2<θ<π/2. For a fixed initial value u(0)u(0), we obtain estimates of the blow-up time TmaxθT_{max}^θ as θ→±π/2θ\to \pm π/2 . It turns out that TmaxθT_{max}^θ stays bounded (respectively, goes to infinity) as θ→±π/2θ\to \pm π/2 in the case where the solution of the limiting nonlinear Schrödinger equation blows up in finite time (respectively, is global).

Scattering for the focusing energy-subcritical NLS

For the 3D focusing cubic nonlinear Schrodinger equation, Scattering of H1H^1 solutions inside the (scale invariant) potential well was established by Holmer and Roudenko~\cite{HR2} (radial case) and Duyckaerts, Holmer and Roudenko~\cite{DHR} (general case). In this paper, we extend this result to arbitrary space dimensions and focusing, mass-supercritical and energy-subcritical power nonlinearities, by adapting the method of~\cite{DHR}.

Continuous dependence for NLS in fractional order spaces

We consider the Cauchy problem for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation iut+Δu+λ∣u∣αu=0iu_t+ Δu+ λ|u|^αu=0 in RN\R^N , in the HsH^s-subcritical and critical cases 0<α≤4/(N−2s)0<α\le 4/(N-2s), where 0<s<N/20<s<N/2. Local existence of solutions in HsH^s is well known. However, even though the solution is constructed by a fixed-point technique, continuous dependence in HsH^s does not follow from the contraction mapping argument. In this paper, assuming furthermore s<1s<1, we show that the solution depends continuously on the initial value in the sense that the local flow is continuous Hs→HsH^s \to H^s. If, in addition, α≥1α\ge 1 then the flow is Lipschitz. This completes previously known results concerning the cases s=0,1,2s=0,1,2.
