Test of Lorentz and CPT violation with Short Baseline Neutrino Oscillation Excesses

The sidereal time dependence of MiniBooNE electron neutrino and anti-electron neutrino appearance data are analyzed to search for evidence of Lorentz and CPT violation. An unbinned Kolmogorov-Smirnov test shows both the electron neutrino and anti-electron neutrino appearance data are compatible with the null sidereal variation hypothesis to more than 5%. Using an unbinned likelihood fit with a Lorentz-violating oscillation model derived from the Standard Model Extension (SME) to describe any excess events over background, we find that the electron neutrino appearance data prefer a sidereal time-independent solution, and the anti-electron neutrino appearance data slightly prefer a sidereal time-dependent solution. Limits of order 10E-20 GeV are placed on combinations of SME coefficients. These limits give the best limits on certain SME coefficients for muon neutrino to electron neutrino and anti-muon neutrino to anti-electron neutrino oscillations. The fit values and limits of combinations of SME coefficients are provided.

Event Excess in the MiniBooNE Search for νˉμ→νˉe\bar ν_μ\rightarrow \bar ν_e Oscillations

The MiniBooNE experiment at Fermilab reports results from a search for νˉμ→νˉe\bar ν_μ\rightarrow \bar ν_e oscillations, using a data sample corresponding to 5.66×10205.66 \times 10^{20} protons on target. An excess of 20.9±14.020.9 \pm 14.0 events is observed in the energy range 475<EνQE<1250475<E_ν^{QE}<1250 MeV, which, when constrained by the observed νˉμ\bar ν_μ events, has a probability for consistency with the background-only hypothesis of 0.5\%. On the other hand, fitting for νˉμ→νˉe\barν_μ\rightarrow\barν_e oscillations, the best-fit point has a χ2χ^2-probability of 8.7\%. The data are consistent with νˉμ→νˉe\bar ν_μ\rightarrow \bar ν_e oscillations in the 0.1 to 1.0 eV2^2 Δm2Δm^2 range and with the evidence for antineutrino oscillations from the Liquid Scintillator Neutrino Detector at Los Alamos National Laboratory.

Measurement of the Neutrino Neutral-Current Elastic Differential Cross Section

We report a measurement of the flux-averaged neutral-current elastic differential cross section for neutrinos scattering on mineral oil (CH2_2) as a function of four-momentum transferred squared. It is obtained by measuring the kinematics of recoiling nucleons with kinetic energy greater than 50~MeV which are readily detected in MiniBooNE. This differential cross-section distribution is fit with fixed nucleon form factors apart from an axial mass, MAM_{A}, that provides a best fit for MA=1.39±0.11M_A= 1.39\pm0.11~GeV. Additionally, single protons with kinetic energies above 350 MeV can be distinguished from neutrons and multiple nucleon events. Using this marker, the strange quark contribution to the neutral-current axial vector form factor at Q2=0Q^2 = 0, ΔsΔs, is found to be Δs=0.08±0.26Δs=0.08\pm0.26.

Measurement of ν_μand \barν_μinduced neutral current single π0π^0 production cross sections on mineral oil at E_νO(1 GeV)

MiniBooNE reports the first absolute cross sections for neutral current single π^0 production on CH_2 induced by neutrino and antineutrino interactions measured from the largest sets of NC π^0 events collected to date. The principal result consists of differential cross sections measured as functions of π^0 momentum and π^0 angle averaged over the neutrino flux at MiniBooNE. We find total cross sections of (4.76+/-0.05_{stat}+/-0.76_{sys})*10^{-40} cm^2/nucleon at a mean energy of <E_ν>=808 MeV and (1.48+/-0.05_{stat}+/-0.23_{sys})*10^{-40} cm^2/nucleon at a mean energy of <E_ν>=664 MeV for ν_μand \barν_μinduced production, respectively. In addition, we have included measurements of the neutrino and antineutrino total cross sections for incoherent exclusive NC 1π^0 production corrected for the effects of final state interactions to compare to prior results.

Compatibility of high-Δm2Δ\mathrm{m}^2 $\nue$ and $\nuebar$ neutrino oscillation searches

This article presents the compatibility of experimental data from neutrino oscillation experiments with a high-$\dmsq$ two-neutrino oscillation hypothesis. Data is provided by the Bugey, Karlsruhe Rutherford Medium Energy Neutrino Experiment 2 (KARMEN2), Los Alamos Liquid Scintillator Neutrino Detector (LSND), and MiniBooNE experiments. The LSND, KARMEN2, and MiniBooNE results are 25.36% compatible within a two-neutrino oscillation hypothesis. However, the point of maximal compatibility is found in a region that is excluded by the Bugey data. A joint analysis of all four experiments, performed in the $\sinsqtheta \mathrm{vs} \dmsq$ region common to all data, finds a maximal compatibility of 3.94%. This result does not account for additions to the neutrino oscillation model from sources such as CP violation or sterile neutrinos.
