4D effective action from non-Abelian DBI action with magnetic flux background

We study a systematic derivation of four dimensional $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric effective theory from ten dimensional non-Abelian Dirac-Born-Infeld action compactified on a six dimensional torus with magnetic fluxes on the D-branes. We find a new type of matter Kähler metric while gauge kinetic function and superpotential are consistent with previous studies. For the ten dimensional action, we use a symmetrized trace prescription and focus on the bosonic part up to $\mathcal{O}(F^4)$. In the presence of the supersymmetry, four dimensional chiral fermions can be obtained via index theorem. The new matter Kähler metric is independent of flavor but depends on the fluxes, 4D dilaton, Kähler moduli and complex structure moduli, and will be always positive definite if an induced Ramond-Ramond charge of the D-branes on which matters are living are positive. We read the superpotential from an F-term scalar quartic interaction derived from the ten dimensional action and the contribution of the new matter Kähler metric to the scalar potential which we derive turns out to be consistent with the supergravity formulation.

A low-scale flavon model with a $Z_N$ symmetry

We propose a model that explains the fermion mass hierarchy by the Froggatt-Nielsen mechanism with a discrete $Z_N^F$ symmetry. As a concrete model, we study a supersymmetric model with a single flavon coupled to the minimal supersymmetric Standard Model. Flavon develops a TeV scale vacuum expectation value for realizing flavor hierarchy, an appropriate $μ$-term and the electroweak scale, hence the model has a low cutoff scale. We demonstrate how the flavon is successfully stabilized together with the Higgs bosons in the model. The discrete flavor symmetry $Z_N^F$ controls not only the Standard Model fermion masses, but also the Higgs potential and a mass of the Higgsino which is a good candidate for dark matter. The hierarchy in the Higgs-flavon sector is determined in order to make the model anomaly-free and realize a stable electroweak vacuum. We show that this model can explain the fermion mass hierarchy, realistic Higgs-flavon potential and thermally produced dark matter at the same time. We discuss flavor violating processes induced by the light flavon which would be detected in future experiments.

Note on a solution to domain wall problem with the Lazarides-Shafi mechanism in axion dark matter models

Axion is a promising candidate of dark matter. After the Peccei-Quinn symmetry breaking, axion strings are formed and attached by domain walls when the temperature of the universe becomes comparable to the QCD scale. Such objects can cause cosmological disasters if they are long-lived. As a solution for it, the Lazarides-Shafi mechanism is often discussed through introduction of a new non-Abelian (gauge) symmetry. We study this mechanism in detail and show configuration of strings and walls. Even if Abelian axion strings with a domain wall number greater than one are formed in the early universe, each of them is split into multiple Alice axion strings due to a repulsive force between the Alice strings even without domain wall. When domain walls are formed as the universe cools down, a single Alice string can be attached by a single wall because a vacuum is connected by a non-Abelian rotation without changing energy. Even if an Abelian axion string attached by domain walls are created due to the Kibble Zurek mechanism at the chiral phase transition, such strings are also similarly split into multiple Alice strings attached by walls in the presence of the domain wall tension. Such walls do not form stable networks since they collapse by the tension of the walls, emitting axions.

Abelian tensor hierarchy in 4D ${\cal N}=1$ conformal supergravity

We consider Abelian tensor hierarchy in four-dimensional ${\cal N}=1$ supergravity in the conformal superspace formalism, where the so-called covariant approach is used to antisymmetric tensor fields. We introduce $p$-form gauge superfields as superforms in the conformal superspace. We solve the Bianchi identities under the constraints for the superforms. As a result, each of form fields is expressed by a single gauge invariant superfield. The action of superforms is shown with the invariant superfields. We also show the relation between the superspace formalism and the superconformal tensor calculus.

Quality of the Peccei-Quinn symmetry in the Aligned QCD Axion and Cosmological Implications

We show that the required high quality of the Peccei-Quinn symmetry can be naturally explained in the aligned QCD axion models where the QCD axion arises from multiple axions with decay constants much smaller than the axion window, e.g., around the weak scale. Even in the presence of general Planck-suppressed Peccei-Quinn symmetry breaking operators, the effective strong CP phase remains sufficiently small in contrast to the standard axion models without the alignment. The QCD axion potential has small or large modulations due to the symmetry breaking operators, which can significantly affect the axion cosmology. When the axions are trapped in different minima, domain walls appear and their scaling behavior suppresses the axion isocurvature perturbations at super-horizon scales. Our scenario predicts many axions and saxions coupled to gluons, and they may be searched for at collider experiments. In particular, the recently found diphoton excess at 750 GeV could be due to one of such (s)axions.

The QCD Axion from Aligned Axions and Diphoton Excess

We argue that the QCD axion can arise from many aligned axions with decay constants much smaller than the conventional axion window. If the typical decay constant is of {\cal O}{(100)} GeV to 1 TeV, one or more of the axions or saxions may account for the recently found diphoton excess at \sim 750 GeV. Our scenario predicts many axions and saxions coupled to gluons with decay constants of order the weak scale, and therefore many collider signatures by heavy axions and saxions will show up at different energy scales. In particular, if the inferred broad decay width is due to multiple axions or saxions, a non-trivial peak structure may become evident when more data is collected. We also discuss cosmological implications of the aligned QCD axion scenario. In the Appendix we give a possible UV completion and argue that the high quality of the Peccei-Quinn symmetry is naturally explained in our scenario.

Topological Defects and nano-Hz Gravitational Waves in Aligned Axion Models

We study the formation and evolution of topological defects in an aligned axion model with multiple Peccei-Quinn scalars, where the QCD axion is realized by a certain combination of the axions with decay constants much smaller than the conventional Peccei-Quinn breaking scale. When the underlying U(1) symmetries are spontaneously broken, the aligned structure in the axion field space exhibits itself as a complicated string-wall network in the real space. We find that the string-wall network likely survives until the QCD phase transition if the number of the Peccei-Quinn scalars is greater than two. The string-wall system collapses during the QCD phase transition, producing a significant amount of gravitational waves in the nano-Hz range at present. The typical decay constant is constrained to be below O(100) TeV by the pulsar timing observations, and the constraint will be improved by a factor of 2 in the future SKA observations.

Axion Landscape and Natural Inflation

Multiple axions form a landscape in the presence of various shift symmetry breaking terms. Eternal inflation populates the axion landscape, continuously creating new universes by bubble nucleation. Slow-roll inflation takes place after the tunneling event, if a very flat direction with a super-Planckian decay constant arises due to the alignment mechanism. We study the vacuum structure as well as possible inflationary dynamics in the axion landscape scenario, and find that the inflaton dynamics is given by either natural or multi-natural inflation. In the limit of large decay constant, it is approximated by the quadratic chaotic inflation, which however is disfavored if there is a pressure toward shorter duration of inflation. Therefore, if the spectral index and the tensor-to-scalar ratio turn out to be different from the quadratic chaotic inflation, there might be observable traces of the bubble nucleation. Also, the existence of small modulations to the inflaton potential is a common feature in the axion landscape, which generates a sizable and almost constant running of the scalar spectral index over CMB scales. Non-Gaussianity of equilateral type can also be generated if some of the axions are coupled to massless gauge fields.

Elliptic Inflation: Interpolating from natural inflation to $R^2$-inflation

We propose an extension of natural inflation, where the inflaton potential is a general periodic function. Specifically, we study elliptic inflation where the inflaton potential is given by Jacobi elliptic functions, Jacobi theta functions or the Dedekind eta function, which appear in gauge and Yukawa couplings in the string theories compactified on toroidal backgrounds. We show that in the first two cases the predicted values of the spectral index and the tensor-to-scalar ratio interpolate from natural inflation to exponential inflation such as $R^2$- and Higgs inflation and brane inflation, where the spectral index asymptotes to $n_s = 1-2/N \simeq 0.967$ for the e-folding number $N = 60$. We also show that a model with the Dedekind eta function gives a sizable running of the spectral index due to modulations in the inflaton potential. Such elliptic inflation can be thought of as a specific realization of multi-natural inflation, where the inflaton potential consists of multiple sinusoidal functions. We also discuss examples in string theory where Jacobi theta functions and the Dedekind eta function appear in the inflaton potential.

Affleck-Dine baryogenesis with R-parity violation

We investigate whether the baryon asymmetry of the universe is explained in the framework of the supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model with R-parity violating interactions. It is shown that the Affleck-Dine mechanism naturally works via a trilinear interaction $LLE^c$, $LQD^c$, or $U^cD^cD^c$, if the magnitude of the coupling corresponding to the operator $λ$, $λ'$, or $λ''$ is sufficiently small. The formation of Q-balls and their subsequent evolution are also discussed. The present baryon asymmetry can be explained in the parameter region where R-parity is mildly violated $10^{-9}\lesssimλ,λ',λ''\lesssim 10^{-6}$ and the mass of the gravitino is relatively heavy $m_{3/2}\gtrsim 10^4\mathrm{GeV}$. On the other hand, it is difficult to explain the present baryon asymmetry for larger values of R-parity violating couplings $λ,λ',λ''\gtrsim 10^{-5}$, since Q-balls are likely to be destructed in the thermal environment and the primordial baryon number is washed away.

Axion monodromy inflation with multi-natural modulations

We study parameter space in the axion monodromy inflation corrected by dynamically generated terms involving with the axion. The potential has the linear potential with multiple sinusoidal functions, which play a role in generating modulations. We show that this potential leads both to a large tensor-to-scalar ratio $r_T \sim 0.16$ and to a large negative running of spectral index $α_s \sim - (0.02 -0.03)$. To realize these results, a small hierarchy among dynamical scales is required whereas the decay constants in sinusoidal functions remain sub-Planckian in this model. We discuss also reheating process after the inflation in a bottom-up approach.

Hidden axion dark matter decaying through mixing with QCD axion and the 3.5 keV X-ray line

Hidden axions may be coupled to the standard model particles through a kinetic or mass mixing with QCD axion. We study a scenario in which a hidden axion constitutes a part of or the whole of dark matter and decays into photons through the mixing, explaining the 3.5 keV X-ray line signal. Interestingly, the required long lifetime of the hidden axion dark matter can be realized for the QCD axion decay constant at an intermediate scale, if the mixing is sufficiently small. In such a two component dark matter scenario, the primordial density perturbations of the hidden axion can be highly non-Gaussian, leading to a possible dispersion in the X-ray line strength from various galaxy clusters and near-by galaxies. We also discuss how the parallel and orthogonal alignment of two axions affects their couplings to gauge fields.

Multi-Natural Inflation in Supergravity

We show that the recently proposed multi-natural inflation can be realized within the framework of 4D ${\cal N}=1$ supergravity. The inflaton potential mainly consists of two sinusoidal potentials that are comparable in size, but have different periodicity with a possible non-zero relative phase. For a sub-Planckian decay constant, the multi-natural inflation model is reduced to axion hilltop inflation. We show that, taking into account the effect of the relative phase, the spectral index can be increased to give a better fit to the Planck results, with respect to the hilltop quartic inflation. We also consider a possible UV completion based on a string-inspired model. Interestingly, the Hubble parameter during inflation is necessarily smaller than the gravitino mass, avoiding possible moduli destabilization. Reheating processes as well as non-thermal leptogenesis are also discussed.

Multi-Natural Inflation in Supergravity and BICEP2

We revisit the recently proposed multi-natural inflation and its realization in supergravity in light of the BICEP2 results. Multi-natural inflation is a single-field inflation model where the inflaton potential consists of multiple sinusoidal functions, and it is known that a sizable running spectral index can be generated, which relaxes the tension between the BICEP2 and the Planck results. In this paper we show that multi-natural inflation can accommodate a wide range of values of $(n_s, r)$, including the spectral index close to or even above unity. This will be be favored if the tension is resolved by other sources such as dark radiation, hot dark matter, or non-zero neutrino mass. We also discuss the implications for the implementation in string theory.

preprint2014arXiv

Natural and Multi-Natural Inflation in Axion Landscape

We propose a landscape of many axions, where the axion potential receives various contributions from shift symmetry breaking effects. We show that the existence of the axion with a super-Planckian decay constant is very common in the axion landscape for a wide range of numbers of axions and shift symmetry breaking terms, because of the accidental alignment of axions. The effective inflation model is either natural or multi-natural inflation in the axion landscape, depending on the number of axions and the shift symmetry breaking terms. The tension between BICEP2 and Planck could be due to small modulations to the inflaton potential or steepening of the potential along the heavy axions after the tunneling. The total duration of the slow-roll inflation our universe experienced is not significantly larger than $60$ if the typical height of the axion potentials is of order $(10^{16-17}{\rm \,GeV})^4$.

Neutrinoful Universe

The Standard Model of particle physics fails to explain the important pieces in the standard cosmology, such as inflation, baryogenesis, and dark matter of the Universe. We consider the possibility that the sector to generate small neutrino masses is responsible for all of them; the inflation is driven by the Higgs field to break $B-L$ gauge symmetry which provides the Majorana masses to the right-handed neutrinos, and the reheating process by the decay of the $B-L$ Higgs boson supplies the second lightest right-handed neutrinos whose CP violating decays produce $B-L$ asymmetry, a la, leptogenesis. The lightest right-handed neutrinos are also produced by the reheating process, and remain today as the dark matter of the Universe. In the minimal model of the inflaton potential, one can set the parameter of the potential by the data from CMB observations including the BICEP2 and the Planck experiments. In such a scenario, the mass of the dark matter particle is predicted to be of the order of PeV. We find that the decay of the PeV right-handed neutrinos can explain the high-energy neutrino flux observed at the IceCube experiments if the lifetime is of the order of $10^{28}$ s.

Solving the Tension between High-Scale Inflation and Axion Isocurvature Perturbations

The BICEP2 experiment determined the Hubble parameter during inflation to be about $10^{14}$ GeV. Such high inflation scale is in tension with the QCD axion dark matter if the Peccei-Quinn (PQ) symmetry remains broken during and after inflation, because too large axion isocurvature perturbations would be generated. The axion isocurvature perturbations can be suppressed if the axion acquires a sufficiently heavy mass during inflation. We show that this is realized if the PQ symmetry is explicitly broken down to a discrete symmetry and if the breaking is enhanced during inflation. We also show that, even when the PQ symmetry becomes spontaneously broken after inflation, such a temporarily enhanced PQ symmetry breaking relaxes the constraint on the axion decay constant.

The 7 keV axion dark matter and the X-ray line signal

We propose a scenario where the saxion dominates the energy density of the Universe and reheats the standard model sector via the dilatonic coupling, while its axionic partner contributes to dark matter decaying into photons via the same operator in supersymmetry. Interestingly, for the axion mass $m_a \simeq 7$keV and the decay constant $f_a \simeq 10^{14-15}$GeV, the recently discovered X-ray line at $3.5$keV in the XMM Newton X-ray observatory data can be explained. We discuss various cosmological aspects of the $7$keV axion dark matter such as the production of axion dark matter, the saxion decay process, hot dark matter and isocurvature constraints on the axion dark matter, and the possible baryogenesis scenarios.

A Parallel World in the Dark

The baryon-dark matter coincidence is a long-standing issue. Interestingly, the recent observations suggest the presence of dark radiation, which, if confirmed, would pose another coincidence problem of why the density of dark radiation is comparable to that of photons. These striking coincidences may be traced back to the dark sector with particle contents and interactions that are quite similar, if not identical, to the standard model: a dark parallel world. It naturally solves the coincidence problems of dark matter and dark radiation, and predicts a sterile neutrino(s) with mass of ${\cal O}(0.1 - 1)$\,eV, as well as self-interacting dark matter made of the counterpart of ordinary baryons. We find a robust prediction for the relation between the abundance of dark radiation and the sterile neutrino, which can serve as the smoking-gun evidence of the dark parallel world.

Cosmological constraints on axionic dark radiation from axion-photon conversion in the early Universe

Axions seem ubiquitous in string theories and some of them may be produced non-thermally by heavy scalar decays, contributing to dark radiation. We study various cosmological effects of photons produced from the axionic dark radiation through axion-photon conversion in the presence of primordial magnetic fields, and derive tight constraints on the combination of the axion-photon coupling and the primordial magnetic field.

Moduli-Induced Axion Problem

We point out that the cosmological moduli problem is not necessarily resolved even if the modulus mass is heavier than O(10)TeV, contrary to the common wisdom. The point is that, in many scenarios where the lightest moduli fields are stabilized by supersymmetry breaking effects, those moduli fields tend to mainly decay into almost massless axions, whose abundance is tightly constrained by the recent Planck results. We study the moduli-induced axion problem in concrete examples, and discuss possible solutions. The problem and its solutions are widely applicable to decays of heavy scalar fields which dominate the energy density of the Universe, for instance, the reheating of the inflaton.

Dark Radiation and Dark Matter in Large Volume Compactifications

We argue that dark radiation is naturally generated from the decay of the overall volume modulus in the LARGE volume scenario. We consider both sequestered and non-sequestered cases, and find that the axionic superpartner of the modulus is produced by the modulus decay and it can account for the dark radiation suggested by observations, while the modulus decay through the Giudice-Masiero term gives the dominant contribution to the total decay rate. In the sequestered case, the lightest supersymmetric particles produced by the modulus decay can naturally account for the observed dark matter density. In the non-sequestered case, on the other hand, the supersymmetric particles are not produced by the modulus decay, since the soft masses are of order the heavy gravitino mass. The QCD axion will then be a plausible dark matter candidate.

Higgs, Moduli Problem, Baryogenesis and Large Volume Compactifications

We consider the cosmological moduli problem in the context of high-scale supersymmetry breaking suggested by the recent discovery of the standard-model like Higgs boson. In order to solve the notorious moduli-induced gravitino problem, we focus on the LARGE volume scenario, in which the modulus decay into gravitinos can be kinematically forbidden. We then consider the Affleck-Dine mechanism with or without an enhanced coupling with the inflaton, taking account of possible Q-ball formation. We show that the baryon asymmetry of the present Universe can be generated by the Affleck-Dine mechanism in LARGE volume scenario, solving the moduli and gravitino problems. We also find that the overall volume modulus decays into a pair of the axionic superpartners, which contribute to the extra relativistic degrees of freedom.

Hybrid inflation in high-scale supersymmetry

In hybrid inflation, the inflaton generically has a tadpole due to gravitational effects in supergravity, which significantly changes the inflaton dynamics in high-scale supersymmetry. We point out that the tadpole can be cancelled if there is a supersymmetry breaking singlet with gravitational couplings, and in particular, the cancellation is automatic in no-scale supergravity. We consider the LARGE volume scenario as a concrete example and discuss the compatibility between the hybrid inflation and the moduli stabilization. We also point out that the dark radiation generated by the overall volume modulus decay naturally relaxes a tension between the observed spectral index and the prediction of the hybrid inflation.

Natural supersymmetric spectrum in mirage mediation

Current results of LHC experiments exclude large area of light new particle region, namely natural parameter space, in supersymmetric extension models. One of the possibilities for achieving the correct electroweak symmetry breaking naturally is low scale messenger scenario. Actually, the next-to-minimal supersymmetric standard model with TeV scale mirage mediation realizes the natural electroweak symmetry breaking with various mass spectra. In this paper, we show the possible mass spectrum in the scenario, e.g. degenerate and/or hierarchical mass spectrum, and discuss these features.

Note on moduli stabilization, supersymmetry breaking and axiverse

We study properties of moduli stabilization in the four dimensional N = 1 supergravity theory with heavy moduli and would-be saxion-axion multiplets including light string-theoretic axions. We give general formulation for the scenario that heavy moduli and saxions are stabilized while axions remain light, assuming that moduli are stabilized near the supersymmetric solution. One can find stable vacuum, i.e. non-tachyonic saxions, in the non-supersymmetric Minkowski vacua. We also discuss the cases, where the moduli are coupled to the supersymmetry breaking sector and/or moduli have contributions to supersymmetry breaking. We also study the models with axions originating from matter-like fields. Our analysis on moduli stabilization is applicable even if there are not light axion multiplets.

On Supersymmetric Effective Theories of Axion

We study effective theories of an axion in spontaneously broken supersymmetric theories. We consider a system where the axion supermultiplet is directly coupled to a supersymmetry breaking sector whereas the standard model sector is communicated with those sectors through loops of messenger fields. The gaugino masses and the axion-gluon coupling necessary for solving the strong CP problem are both obtained by the same effective interaction. We discuss cosmological constraints on this framework.

Dynamically sequestered F-term uplifting in extra dimension

We study concretely several issues altogether, moduli stabilization, the dynamical supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking, the uplifting of SUSY anti-de Sitter (AdS) vacuum and the sequestering of hidden sector, in a simple supergravity model with a single extra dimension. The sequestering is achieved dynamically by a wavefunction localization in extra dimension. The expressions for the visible sector soft SUSY breaking terms as well as the hidden sector potential are shown explicitly in our model. We find that the tree-level soft scalar mass and the A-term can be suppressed at a SUSY breaking Minkowski minimum where the radius modulus is stabilized, while gaugino masses would be a mirage type.

Non-perturbative moduli superpotential with positive exponents

We study non-perturbative moduli superpotentials with positive exponents, i.e. the form like $Ae^{aT}$ with a positive constant $a$ and the modulus $T$. These effects can be generated, e.g., by D-branes which have negative RR charge of lower dimensional D-brane. The scalar potentials including such terms have a quite rich structure. There are several local minima with different potential energies and a high barrier, whose height is of ${\cal O}(M_p^4)$. We discuss their implications from the viewpoints of cosmology and particle phenomenology, e.g. the realization of inflation models, avoiding the overshooting problem. This type of potentials would be useful to realize the inflation and low-energy supersymmetry breaking.

KKLT type models with moduli-mixing superpotential

We study KKLT type models with moduli-mixing superpotential. In several string models, gauge kinetic functions are written as linear combinations of two or more moduli fields. Their gluino condensation generates moduli-mixing superpotential. We assume one of moduli fields is frozen already around the string scale. It is found that Kähler modulus can be stabilized at a realistic value without tuning 3-form fluxes because of gluino condensation on (non-)magnetized D-brane. Furthermore, we do not need to highly tune parameters in order to realize a weak gauge coupling and a large hierarchy between the gravitino mass and the Planck scale, when there exists non-perturbative effects on D3-brane. SUSY breaking patterns in our models have a rich structure. Also, some of our models have cosmologically important implications, e.g., on the overshooting problem and the destabilization problem due to finite temperature effects as well as the gravitino problem and the moduli problem.
