The International Linear Collider: Report to Snowmass 2021

The International Linear Collider (ILC) is on the table now as a new global energy-frontier accelerator laboratory taking data in the 2030s. The ILC addresses key questions for our current understanding of particle physics. It is based on a proven accelerator technology. Its experiments will challenge the Standard Model of particle physics and will provide a new window to look beyond it. This document brings the story of the ILC up to date, emphasizing its strong physics motivation, its readiness for construction, and the opportunity it presents to the US and the global particle physics community.

CP-Violation in the 3-Higgs Doublet Model: CP-Asymmetries from Charged Higgs Bosons and Electric Dipole Moments

We propose a CP-violating source in the charged Higgs sector of a 3-Higgs Doublet Model (3HDM) that will contribute to three CP-asymmetry observables for low energy processes. In the context of such a 3HDM, a measurement of one of the specific asymmetry observables (i.e., $\bar{B} \to X_{s+d} γ$) could obtain up to 2.5% or more, which would give a 5$σ$ evidence for physics Beyond the SM (BSM) from the full BELLE II data set. In addition to these CP-violating observables, the current measurements of Electron Dipole Moments (EDMs) constrain the available parameter region of the CP-violating 3HDM. In this work, we perform a thorough analysis of the parameter space of it to find the regions that satisfy EDMs, $\bar{B} \to X_s γ$, direct collider searches for charged Higgs bosons as well as theoretical bounds.

Lower bounds on lepton flavor violating branching ratios in a radiative seesaw model

We study the lepton flavor violating decays such as $μ\to eγ$, $τ\to eγ$, $τ\to μγ$ in the three-loop radiative seesaw model proposed by Krauss, Nasri, and Trodden. In this model, the relevant coupling constants are larger for the heavier scalars that run inside loop diagrams to generate the appropriate magnitude of neutrino masses. Imposing a criterion that all the coupling constants must be small enough to be treated perturbatively, we find an upper bound on the mass of one of the scalars. By combining it with neutrino mass parameters, we derive lower bounds on the branching ratios of the lepton flavor violating processes. In a case with the inverted mass ordering and best-fit neutrino oscillation parameters, one of the lower bounds is $\text{Br}(μ\to eγ)>1.1\times 10^{-13}$, which is within the reach of the MEG~II experiment.

CP asymmetries of ${\overline B}\to X_s/X_dγ$ in models with three Higgs doublets

Direct CP asymmetries (${\cal A}_{CP}$) in the inclusive decays of ${\overline B}\to X_sγ$ and ${\overline B}\to X_{s+d}γ$ of the order of $1\%$ will be probed at the BELLE II experiment. In this work, three such asymmetries are studied in the context of a three-Higgs-doublet model (3HDM), and it is shown that all three ${\cal A}_{CP}$ can be as large as the current experimental limits. Of particular interest is ${\cal A}_{CP}$ for ${\overline B}\to X_{s+d}γ$, which is predicted to be effectively zero in the Standard Model (SM). A measurement of $2.5\%$ or more for this observable with the full BELLE II data would give $5σ$ evidence for physics beyond the SM. We display parameter space in the 3HDM for which such a clear signal is possible.

Diphoton excess at 750 GeV in an extended scalar sector

We discuss an extended scalar model which explains the recent results of diphoton excess at 750 GeV at LHC Run II experiments. An additional singlet scalar boson with the mass of 750 GeV, which couples to top quarks via a dimension five operator, is produced via gluon fusion and decays into two photons via loop contributions of a number of (multiply) charged scalar bosons. Origin of such a dimension five operator would be, for example, in the context of composite Higgs models. The excess can be explained without contradicting the data from LHC Run I and also theoretical consistencies such as perturbative unitarity and charge non-breaking.

Single and double production of the Higgs boson at hadron and lepton colliders in minimal composite Higgs models

In the composite Higgs models, originally proposed by Georgi and Kaplan, the Higgs boson is a pseudo Nambu-Goldstone boson (pNGB) of spontaneous breaking of a global symmetry. In the minimal version of such models, global SO(5) symmetry is spontaneously broken to SO(4), and the pNGBs form an isospin doublet field, which corresponds to the Higgs doublet in the Standard Model (SM). Predicted coupling constants of the Higgs boson can in general deviate from the SM predictions, depending on the compositeness parameter. The deviation pattern is determined also by the detail of the matter sector. We comprehensively study how the model can be tested via measuring single and double production processes of the Higgs boson at LHC and future electron-positron colliders. The possibility to distinguish the matter sector among the minimal composite Higgs models is also discussed. In addition, we point out differences in the cross section of double Higgs boson production from the prediction in other new physics models.

Beyond the SM phenomena and the extended Higgs sector based on the SUSY gauge theory with confinement

We propose a fundamental theory whose low-energy effective theory provides a phenomenological description of electroweak baryogenesis, radiative neutrino mass generation, and dark matter. The model is based on SUSY SU(2)_H gauge theory with confinement, and the model contains new Z_2 discrete symmetry and Z_2-odd right-handed neutrino superfields. The Higgs sector in the low energy effective theory of this model below confinement scale is described by fifteen mesonic superfields of fundamental SU(2)_H doublets. We present a benchmark scenario of this model, where all the constraints from the current neutrino, dark matter, lepton flavour violation and LHC data are satisfied. We also discuss how to test the scenario by the future collider experiments.

New resonance scale and fingerprint identification in minimal composite Higgs models

Composite Higgs models are an intriguing scenario in which the Higgs particle is identified as a pseudo Nambu-Goldstone boson associated with spontaneous breaking of some global symmetry above the electroweak scale. They would predict new resonances at high energy scales, some of which can appear at multi-TeV scales. In such a case, analogies with pion physics in QCD that a sizable phase shift is predicted in pion-pion scattering processes might help us to evaluate scales of the resonances. In this paper, we discuss two complementary approaches to investigate the compositeness scale in minimal composite Higgs models. First, we discuss the bound on vector boson scattering from perturbative unitarity, and we evaluate the phase shift of the scattering amplitude, assuming that the same fitting function can be applied as the case in the pion physics. We then obtain the relation between possible phase shifts and promising new resonance scales. We also investigate the possibility to measure the phase shift at LHC and the future hadron colliders. Second, we classify deviations in Higgs coupling constants from the standard model predictions in various kinds of the minimal composite Higgs models. We then discuss a possibility to discriminate a specific minimal composite Higgs model from the other models with extended Higgs sectors by utilizing deviation patterns in the Higgs boson couplings by future precision measurements.

R-Parity Conserving Supersymmetric Extension of the Zee Model

We extend the Zee model, where tiny neutrino masses are generated at the one loop level, to a supersymmetric model with R-parity conservation. It is found that the neutrino mass matrix can be consistent with the neutrino oscillation data thanks to the nonholomorphic Yukawa interaction generated via one-loop diagrams of sleptons. We find a parameter set of the model, where in addition to the neutrino oscillation data, experimental constraints from the lepton flavor violating decays of charged leptons and current LHC data are also satisfied. In the parameter set, an additional CP-even neutral Higgs boson other than the standard-model-like one, a CP-odd neutral Higgs boson, and two charged scalar bosons are light enough to be produced at the LHC and future lepton colliders. If the lightest charged scalar bosons are mainly composed of the SU(2)_L-singlet scalar boson in the model, they would decay into e nu and mu nu with 50% of a branching ratio for each. In such a case, the relation among the masses of the charged scalar bosons and the CP-odd Higgs in the minimal supersymmetric standard model approximately holds with a radiative correction. Our model can be tested by measuring the specific decay patterns of charged scalar bosons and the discriminative mass spectrum of additional scalar bosons.

Lepton flavor violation in the supersymmetric seesaw model after the LHC 8 TeV run

We study the lepton flavor violation in the supersymmetric seesaw model taking into account recent experimental improvements, especially for the Higgs boson mass measurement, direct searches of superpartners and the rare decay of B_s -> mu+ mu- at the LHC, the neutrino mixing angle of theta_{13} at the neutrino experiments, and the search of mu -> e gamma at the MEG experiment. We obtain the latest constraints on the parameters in the supersymmetry breaking terms and study the effect on the lepton flavor violating decays of tau -> mu gamma and mu -> e gamma. In particular, we consider two kinds of assumption on the structures in the Majorana mass matrix and the neutrino Yukawa matrix. In the case of the Majorana mass matrix proportional to the unit matrix, allowing non-vanishing CP violating parameters in the neutrino Yukawa matrix, we find that the branching ratio of tau -> mu gamma can be larger than 10^{-9} within the improved experimental limit of mu -> e gamma. We also consider the neutrino Yukawa matrix that includes the mixing only in the second and third generations, and find that a larger branching ratio of tau -> mu gamma than 10^{-9} is possible with satisfying the recent constraints.

Radiative neutrino mass, dark matter and electroweak baryogenesis from the supersymmetric gauge theory with confinement

We propose a simple model to explain neutrino mass, dark matter and baryogenesis based on the extended Higgs sector which appears in the low-energy effective theory of a supersymmetric gauge theory with confinement. We here consider the SU(2)$_H$ gauge symmetry with three flavours of fundamental representations which are charged under the standard SU(3)$_C\times$ SU(2)$_L\times$U(1)$_Y$ symmetry and a new discrete $Z_2$ symmetry. We also introduce $Z_2$-odd right-handed neutrino superfields in addition to the standard model matter superfields. The low-energy effective theory below the confinement scale contains the Higgs sector with fifteen composite superfields, some of which are $Z_2$-odd. When the confinement scale is of the order of ten TeV, electroweak phase transition can be sufficiently of first order, which is required for successful electroweak baryogenesis. The lightest $Z_2$-odd particle can be a new candidate for dark matter, in addition to the lightest $R$-parity odd particle. Neutrino masses and mixings can be explained by the quantum effects of $Z_2$-odd fields via the one-loop and three-loop diagrams. We find a benchmark scenario of the model, where all the constraints from the current neutrino, dark matter, lepton flavour violation and LHC data are satisfied. Predictions of the model are shortly discussed.

A UV complete model for radiative seesaw and electroweak baryogenesis based on the SUSY gauge theory

In a class of supersymmetric gauge theories with asymptotic freedom, the low energy effective theory below the confinement scale is described by the composite superfields of the fundamental representation fields. Based on the supersymmetric gauge theory with N_c=2 and N_f=3 with an additional unbroken Z_2 symmetry, we propose a new model where neutrino masses, dark matter, and baryon asymmetry of the Universe can be simultaneously explained by physics below the confinement scale. This is an example for the ultraviolet complete supersymmetric extension of so-called radiative seesaw scenarios with first-order phase transition required for successful electroweak baryogenesis. We show that there are benchmark points where all the neutrino data, the lepton flavor violation data, and the LHC data are satisfied. We also briefly discuss Higgs phenomenology in this model.

Electroweak phase transition and Higgs boson couplings in the model based on supersymmetric strong dynamics

We discuss a strongly-coupled extended Higgs sector with the 126 GeV Higgs boson, which is a low-energy effective theory of the supersymmetric SU(2)$_H$ gauge thoery that causes confinement. In this effective theory, we study the parameter region where electroweak phase transition is of strongly first order, as required for successful electroweak baryogenesis. In such a parameter region, the model has a Landau pole at the order of 10 TeV, which corresponds to the confinement scale of the SU(2)$_H$ gauge theory. We find that the large coupling constant which blows up at the Landau pole results in large non-decoupling loop effects on low-energy observables, such as the Higgs-photon-photon vertex and the triple Higgs boson vertex. As phenomenological consequences of electroweak baryogenesis in our model, the Higgs-to-diphoton branching ratio is about 20% smaller while the triple Higgs boson coupling is more than about 20% larger than the standard model predictions. Such deviations may be detectable in future collider experiments.

preprint2012arXiv

A light Higgs scenario based on the TeV-scale supersymmetric strong dynamics

We consider a model based on the supersymmetric QCD theory with N_c=2 and N_f=3. The theory is strongly coupled at the infrared scale Λ_H. Its low energy effective theory below Λ_H is described by the supersymmetric standard model with the Higgs sector that contains four iso-spin doublets, two neutral iso-spin singlets and two charged iso-spin singlets. If Λ_H is at the multi-TeV to 10 TeV, coupling constants for the F-terms of these composite fields are relatively large at the electroweak scale. Nevertheless, the SM-like Higgs boson is predicted to be as light as 125 GeV because these F-terms contribute to the mass of the SM-like Higgs boson not at the tree level but at the one-loop level. A large non-decoupling effect due to these F-terms appears in the one-loop correction to the triple Higgs boson coupling, which amounts to a few tens percent. Such a non-decoupling property in the Higgs potential realizes the strong first order phase transition, which is required for a successful scenario of electroweak baryogenesis.

Decoupling Property of SUSY Extended Higgs Sectors and Implication for Electroweak Baryogenesis

One-loop contributions to the Higgs potential at finite temperatures are discussed in the supersymmetric standard model with four Higgs doublet chiral superfields as well as a pair of charged singlet chiral superfields. The mass of the lightest Higgs boson $h$ is determined only by the D-term at the tree-level in this model, while the triple Higgs boson coupling for $hhh$ can receive a significant radiative correction. The same nondecoupling effect can also contribute to realize the sufficient first order electroweak phase transition, which is required for a successful scenario of electroweak baryogenesis. This model can be a new candidate for a model in which the baryon asymmetry of the Universe is explained at the electroweak scale. We also discuss the implication for the measurement of the triple Higgs boson coupling at the ILC.

preprint2011arXiv

Decoupling property of the supersymmetric Higgs sector with four doublets

In supersymmetric standard models with multi Higgs doublet fields, selfcoupling constants in the Higgs potential come only from the D-terms at the tree level. We investigate the decoupling property of additional two heavier Higgs doublet fields in the supersymmetric standard model with four Higgs doublets. In particular, we study how they can modify the predictions on the quantities well predicted in the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM), when the extra doublet fields are rather heavy to be measured at collider experiments. The B-term mixing between these extra heavy Higgs bosons and the relatively light MSSM-like Higgs bosons can significantly change the predictions in the MSSM such as on the masses of MSSM-like Higgs bosons as well as the mixing angle for the two light CP-even scalar states. We first give formulae for deviations in the observables of the MSSM in the decoupling region for the extra two doublet fields. We then examine possible deviations in the Higgs sector numerically, and discuss their phenomenological implications.

First-order electroweak phase transition powered by additional F-term loop effects in an extended supersymmetric Higgs sector

We investigate the one-loop effect of new charged scalar bosons on the Higgs potential at finite temperatures in the supersymmetric standard model with four Higgs doublet chiral superfields as well as a pair of charged singlet chiral superfields. In this model, the mass of the lightest Higgs boson $h$ is determined only by the D-term in the Higgs potential at the tree-level, while the triple Higgs boson coupling for $hhh$ can receive a significant radiative correction due to nondecoupling one-loop contributions of the additional charged scalar bosons. We find that the same nondecoupling mechanism can also contribute to realize stronger first order electroweak phase transition than that in the minimal supersymmetric standard model, which is definitely required for a successful scenario of electroweak baryogenesis. Therefore, this model can be a new candidate for a model in which the baryon asymmetry of the Universe is explained at the electroweak scale.

Non-decoupling effects in supersymmetric Higgs sectors

A wide class of Higgs sectors is investigated in supersymmetric standard models. When the lightest Higgs boson (h) looks the standard model one, the mass (m_h) and the triple Higgs boson coupling (the hhh coupling) are evaluated at the one-loop level in each model. While m_h is at most 120-130 GeV in the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM), that in models with an additional neutral singlet or triplet fields can be much larger. The hhh coupling can also be sensitive to the models: while in the MSSM the deviation from the standard model prediction is not significant, that can be 30-60 % in some models such as the MSSM with the additional singlet or with extra doublets and charged singlets. These models are motivated by specific physics problems like the mu-problem, the neutrino mass, the scalar dark matter and so on. Therefore, when h is found at the CERN Large Hadron Collider, we can classify supersymmetric models by measuring m_h and the hhh coupling accurately at future collider experiments.

Tiny neutrino mass from SUSY and lepton number breaking sector

We suggest new setup where SUSY breaking spurion F-term possesses lepton number. This setup not only modifies sparticle mass spectra but also realizes several new models, where neutrino mass is naturally induced through radiative corrections. We here suggest two new models; the first one is (i): pseudo-Dirac/Schizophrenic neutrino model, and the second one is (ii): pure Majorana neutrino model. We will also show this setup can naturally apply to the supersymmetric Zee-Babu model.

An R-parity conserving radiative neutrino mass model without right-handed neutrinos

The model proposed by A. Zee (1986) and K.S. Babu (1988) is a simple radiative seesaw model, in which tiny neutrino masses are generated at the two-loop level. We investigate a supersymmetric extension of the Zee-Babu model under R-parity conservation. The lightest superpartner particle can then be a dark matter candidate. We find that the neutrino data can be reproduced with satisfying current data from lepton flavour violation even in the scenario where not all the superpartner particles are heavy. Phenomenology at the Large Hadron Collider is also discussed.

Gluon jet as a probe of a long-lived colored particle at the LHC

In some new physics models, there exists a long-lived colored particle. Although such a particle is expected be discovered by studying the muon-like tracks, it is not easy to discriminate hadronic events from leptonic ones at the Large Hadron Collider. We focus on the charged track events associated with a single hard gluon jet. They are sensitive to the colored long-lived particle and found to be almost free from the background after applying the velocity cut. We also study the the process to probe properties of the particle.

Superparticle Mass Window from Leptogenesis and Decaying Gravitino Dark Matter

Gravitino dark matter, together with thermal leptogenesis, implies an upper bound on the masses of superparticles. In the case of broken R-parity the constraints from primordial nucleosynthesis are naturally satisfied and decaying gravitinos lead to characteristic signatures in high energy cosmic rays. We analyse the implications for supergravity models with universal boundary conditions at the grand unification scale. Together with low-energy observables one obtains a window of superparticle masses, which will soon be probed at the LHC, and a range of allowed reheating temperatures.

Enhancement of lepton flavor violation in a model with bi-maximal mixing at the grand unification scale

We study phenomenological predictions in the scenario with the quasi-degenerate relation among neutrino Dirac masses, m_D1 simeq m_D2 < m_D3, assuming the bi-maximal mixing at the grand unification scale in supersymmetric standard models with right-handed neutrinos. A sufficient lepton number asymmetry can be produced for successful leptogenesis. The lepton flavor violating process mu to e gamma can be enhanced due to the Majorana phase, so that it can be detectable at forthcoming experiments. The processes tau to e gamma and tau to mu gamma are suppressed because of the structure of neutrino Dirac masses, and their branching ratios are smaller than that of mu to e gamma.

Phase effects from the general neutrino Yukawa matrix on lepton flavor violation

We examine contributions from Majorana phases to lepton flavor violating processes in the framework of the minimal supersymmetric standard model with heavy right-handed neutrinos. All phases in the complex neutrino Yukawa matrix are taken into account in our study. We find that in the scenario with universal soft-breaking terms sizable phase effects can appear on the lepton flavor violating processes such as $μ\to e γ$, $τ\to e γ$, and $τ\to μγ$. In particular, the branching ratio of $μ\to e γ$ can be considerably enhanced due to the Majorana phases, so that it can be much greater than that of $τ\to μγ$.

Exploring flavor structure of supersymmetry breaking from rare B decays and unitarity triangle

We study effects of supersymmetric particles in various rare B decay processes as well as in the unitarity triangle analysis. We consider three different supersymmetric models, the minimal supergravity, SU(5) SUSY GUT with right-handed neutrinos, and the minimal supersymmetric standard model with U(2) flavor symmetry. In the SU(5) SUSY GUT with right-handed neutrinos, we consider two cases of the mass matrix of the right-handed neutrinos. We calculate direct and mixing-induced CP asymmetries in the b to s gamma decay and CP asymmetry in B_d to phi K_S as well as the B_s--anti-B_s mixing amplitude for the unitarity triangle analysis in these models. We show that large deviations are possible for the SU(5) SUSY GUT and the U(2) model. The pattern and correlations of deviations from the standard model will be useful to discriminate the different SUSY models in future B experiments.

Exploring Flavor Structure of Supersymmetry Breaking at B factories

We investigate quark flavor signals in three different supersymmetric models, the minimal supergravity, the SU(5) SUSY GUT with right handed neutrinos, and the minimal supersymmetric standard model with U(2) flavor symmetry, in order to study physics potential of the present and future $B$ factories. We evaluate CP asymmetries in various B decay modes, $Δm_{B_s}$, $Δm_{B_d}$, and $ε_K$. The allowed regions of the CP asymmetry in $B\to J/ψK_S$ and $Δm_{B_s}/Δm_{B_d}$ are different for the three models so that precise determinations of these observables in near future experiments are useful to distinguish the three models. We also investigate possible deviations from the standard model predictions of CP asymmetries in other B decay modes. In particular, a large deviation is possible for the U(2) model. The consistency check of the unitarity triangle including $B\to ππ,ρπ,D^{(*)}K^{(*)},D^{(*)}π,D^{*}ρ$, and so on, at future high luminosity $e^+e^-$ $B$ factories and hadronic $B$ experiments is therefore important to distinguish flavor structures of different supersymmetric models.

Prediction of |V_{13}| and the Dirac phase in the Neutrino Mixing Matrix

We considered a model where |V_{13}|=0 so that delta=0 at M_R and analyzed mixing angles and CP violation angles at the low energy scale by using the renormalization group in the MSSM model. In this model, parameters at M_R scale are two mixing angles (theta_{12} and theta_{23}), three neutrino masses, and two Majorana phases. We found that (1) sin^2 2 theta_{12} at the low energy scale must be less than that at $M_R$ scale, (2) the induced |V_{13}| can be as large as 0.05 if masses of neutrinos are around 0.05 eV.
