Slowly rotating neutron stars in the nonminimal derivative coupling sector of Horndeski gravity

This work is devoted to the construction of slowly rotating neutron stars in the framework of the nonminimal derivative coupling sector of Horndeski theory. We match the large radius expansion of spherically symmetric solutions with cosmological solutions and we find that the most viable model has only one free parameter. Then, by using several tabulated and realistic equations of state, we establish numerically the upper bound for this parameter in order to construct neutron stars in the slow rotation approximation with the maximal mass observed today. We finally study the surface redshift and the inertia of these objects and compare them with known data.

Geodesic motion in equal angular momenta Myers-Perry-AdS spacetimes

We study the geodesic motion of massive and massless test particles in the background of equally spinning Myers-Perry-anti-de Sitter (AdS) black holes in five dimensions. By adopting a coordinate system that makes manifest the cohomogeneity-1 property of these spacetimes, the equations of motion simplify considerably. This allows us to easily separate the radial motion from the angular part and to obtain solutions for angular trajectories in a compact closed form. For the radial motion we focus our attention on spherical orbits. In particular, we determine the timelike innermost stable circular orbits (ISCOs) for these asymptotically AdS spacetimes, as well as the location of null circular orbits. We find that the ISCO dives below the ergosurface for black holes rotating close to extremality and merges with the event horizon exactly at extremality, in analogy with the four-dimensional Kerr case. For sufficiently massive black holes in AdS there exists a spin parameter range in which the background spacetime is stable against superradiance and the ISCO lies inside the ergoregion. Our results for massless geodesics show that there are no stable circular null orbits outside the horizon, but there exist such orbits inside the horizon, as well as around over-extremal spacetimes, i.e., naked singularities. We also discuss how these orbits deform from the static to the rotating case.

I-Love irrotationally

In this short note, we investigate the existence of universal relations between the gravimagnetic Love number of irrotational stars and the dimensionless moment of inertia. These Love numbers take into account the internal motion of the fluid, while the star is globally irrotational. The goal is to extend the so-called I-Love-Q relations - providing a strong correlation between the gravitoelectric Love number, the dimensionless moment of inertia and the dimensionless rotation-induced quadrupole - to the gravitomagnetic sector, where internal motion is taken into account. As a byproduct, we present for the first time this new gravitomagnetic Love number for realistic equations of state.

Neutron stars in general second order scalar-tensor theory: the case of non-minimal derivative coupling

We consider the sector of Horndeski's gravity characterized by the coupling between the kinetic scalar field term and the Einstein tensor. We numerically construct neutron star configurations where the external geometry is identical to the Schwarzschild metric but the interior structure is considerably different from standard general relativity. We constrain the only parameter of this model from the requirement that compact configurations exist, and we argue that solutions less compact than neutron stars, such as white dwarfs, are also supported. Therefore, our model provides an explicit modification of general relativity that is astrophysically viable and does not conflict with Solar System tests.

Nonminimal derivative coupling scalar-tensor theories: odd-parity perturbations and black hole stability

We derive the odd parity perturbation equation in scalar-tensor theories with a non minimal kinetic coupling sector of the general Horndeski theory, where the kinetic term is coupled to the metric and the Einstein tensor. We derive the potential of the perturbation, by identifying a master function and switching to tortoise coordinates. We then prove the mode stability under linear odd- parity perturbations of hairy black holes in this sector of Horndeski theory, when a cosmological constant term in the action is included. Finally, we comment on the existence of slowly rotating black hole solutions in this setup and discuss their implications on the physics of compact objects configurations, such as neutron stars.

The Initial Value Formulation of Dynamical Chern-Simons Gravity

We derive an initial value formulation for dynamical Chern-Simons gravity, a modification of general relativity involving parity-violating higher derivative terms. We investigate the structure of the resulting system of partial differential equations thinking about linearization around arbitrary backgrounds. This type of consideration is necessary if we are to establish well-posedness of the Cauchy problem. Treating the field equations as an effective field theory we find that weak necessary conditions for hyperbolicity are satisfied. For the full field equations we find that there are states from which subsequent evolution is not determined. Generically the evolution system closes, but the full field equations are in no sense hyperbolic. In a cursory mode analysis we find that the equations of motion contain terms that may cause ill-posedness of the initial value problem.

Collapsing rotating shells in Myers-Perry-AdS$_5$ spacetime: A perturbative approach

We study gravitational perturbations sourced by a rotating test shell collapsing into five-dimensional Myers-Perry black holes in anti-de Sitter (AdS). Our attention is restricted to the case in which the two possible angular momenta of the geometry are set equal. In this situation the background is cohomogeneity-1, which amounts to a crucial technical simplification. It is found that the linearized Einstein equations are consistent only when the test shell is corotating with the spacetime. However, it is argued that this is a consequence of the matter on the shell being described by dust or, more precisely, noninteracting test particles. We compute the mass and angular momenta of the perturbed spacetime using a counterterm subtraction method, for which we provide an explicit formula that has not appeared previously in the literature. The results are in agreement with the expected expressions for energy and angular momenta of geodesic particles in AdS$_5$.

Collapsing thin shells with rotation

We construct exact solutions describing the motion of rotating thin shells in a fully backreacted five-dimensional rotating black hole spacetime. The radial equation of motion follows from the Darmois-Israel junction conditions, where both interior and exterior geometries are taken to be equal angular momenta Myers-Perry solutions. We show that rotation generates anisotropic pressures and momentum along the shell. Gravitational collapse scenarios including rotation are analyzed and a new class of stationary solutions is introduced. Energy conditions for the matter shell are briefly discussed.

I-Q relation for rapidly rotating neutron stars

We consider a universal relation between moment of inertia and quadrupole moment of arbitrarily fast rotating neutron stars. Recent studies suggest that this relation breaks down for fast rotation. We find that it is still universal among various suggested equations of state for constant values of certain dimensionless parameters characterizing the magnitude of rotation. One of these parameters includes the neutron star radius, leading to a new universal relation expressing the radius through the mass, frequency, and spin parameter. This can become a powerful tool for radius measurements.

Effective action and linear response of compact objects in Newtonian gravity

We apply an effective field theory method for the gravitational interaction of compact stars, developed within the context of general relativity, to Newtonian gravity. In this effective theory a compact object is represented by a point particle possessing generic gravitational multipole moments. The time evolution of the multipoles depends on excitations due to external fields. This can formally be described by a response function of the multipoles to applied fields. The poles of this response correspond to the normal oscillation modes of the star. This gives rise to resonances between modes and tidal forces in binary systems. The connection to the standard formalism for tidal interactions and resonances in Newtonian gravity is worked out. Our approach can be applied to more complicated situations. In particular, a generalization to general relativity is possible.

New perspectives on neutron star and black hole spectroscopy and dynamic tides

We elaborate on a powerful tidal interaction formalism where the multipole dynamics is kept generic and encoded in a linear response function. This response function is the gravitational counterpart of the atomic spectrum and can become of similar importance with the rise of gravitational wave astronomy. We find that the internal dynamics of nonrotating neutron stars admit a harmonic oscillator formulation yielding a simple interpretation of tides. A preliminary investigation of the black holes case is given. Our results fill the gap between Love numbers and dynamic tides.

Excited DeSitter brane worlds localized by a kink

We reconsider, in five-dimensional space-time, the issue of thick brane localized in the extra dimension by a kink formed by a scalar field. The localization is achieved by a sine-Gordon potential. Apart from a fundamental brane (discovered by Koley and Kar \cite{koley_kar}) where the scalar field is a monotonic function of the extra dimension), we show that a series of new solutions exist as well, labelled by the number of zeros of the scalar field. These solutions are regular, localized on the brane and mirror symmetric with respect to the extra dimension. They form a tower of "excited branes". The study of some perturbations of the solutions reveals that the new solutions are not stable. Finally, fermions are coupled to the scalar field by means of a Yukawa potential and their localization in the background of the new solutions is examined. %%The influence on the new solutions on the fermions on the brane is investigated. It turns out that the excited branes can localize left and right chiral fermion either on the brane and/or in the bulk but close to the brane.

Localizing modes of massive fermions and a U(1) gauge field in the inflating baby-skyrmion branes

We consider the six dimensional brane world model, where the brane is described by a localized solution to the baby-Skyrme model extending in the extradimensions. The branes have a cosmological constant modeled by inflating four dimensional slices and we further consider a bulk cosmological constant. We focus on the topological number three solutions and discuss the localization mechanism of the fermions on the above 3-branes. We discuss interpretation of the model in term of quark third generation mass and in terms of the inflation history. We argue that it is possible to track the phases of inflation in our model by suitably choosing the parameters. We further discuss the localization properties of gauge fields on the brane and argue that this is achieved only for specific values of the electromagnetic coupling, providing a quantization to the electric charge.

New insights on the matter-gravity coupling paradigm

The coupling between matter and gravity in General Relativity is given by a proportionality relation between the stress tensor and the geometry. This is an oriented assumption driven by the fact that both the stress tensor and the Einstein tensor are divergenceless. However, General Relativity is in essence a nonlinear theory, so there is no obvious reason why the coupling to matter should be linear. On another hand, modified theories of gravity usually affect the vacuum dynamics, yet keep the coupling to matter linear. In this Letter we address the implications of consistent nonlinear gravity/matter coupling. The Eddington inspired Born-Infeld theory recently introduced by Banados and Ferreira provides an enlightening realization of such coupling modifications. We find that this theory coupled to a perfect fluid reduces to General Relativity coupled to a nonlinearly modified perfect fluid, leading to an ambiguity between modified coupling and modified equation of state. We discuss observational consequences of this degeneracy and argue that such a completion of General Relativity is viable from both an experimental and theoretical point of view through energy conditions, consistency, and singularity-avoidance perspectives. We use these results to discuss the impact of changing the coupling paradigm.

Non-axisymmetric baby-skyrmion branes

We investigate the existence of non axisymmetric solutions in the 6-dimensional baby-Skyrme brane model. The brane is described by a localized solution to the baby-Skyrme model extending in the extra dimensions. Such non symmetric branes have already been constructed in the original 2+1-dimensional baby-Skyrme model in flat space. We generalize this result to the case of gravitating baby-Skyrme and in the context of extradimensions. These non-trivial deformation from the axisymmetric shape appear for higher values of the topological charge, so we consider the cases of $B=3,4$, where $B$ is the topological charge. We solve the coupled system of the Einstein and baby-Skyrme equations by successive over relaxation method. We argue that the result may be a possible resolution for the fermion mass hierarchy puzzle.

Inflating baby-Skyrme branes in six dimensions

We consider a six dimensional brane world model, where the brane is described by a localized solution to the baby-Skyrme model extending in the extradimensions. The branes have a cosmological constant modeled by inflating four dimensional slices and we further consider a bulk cosmological constant. We construct solutions numerically and present evidences that the solutions cease to exist for large values of the brane cosmological constant in some particular case. Then we study the stability of the model by considering perturbation of the gravitational part (resp. baby skyrmion) with fixed matter fields (resp. gravitational background). Our results indicate that the perturbation equations do not admit localized solutions for certain type of perturbation. The stability analysis can be alternatively seen as leading to a particle spectrum; we give mass estimations for the baby-Skyrme perturbation and for the graviton.

New features of black strings and branes in higher dimensional gravity due to a cosmological constant

This thesis is essentially organized in two parts: braneworlds and higher dimensional black objects with a cosmological constant. We present solitonic braneworld models where the brane are inflating and with the presence of a cosmological constant, by analyzing four particular models. These models, although slightly different exhibit common features which are pointed out. We also consider $1+1$ dimensional toy models for coupling fermionic matter fields to braneworld. In particular, we focus on a kink or kink/anti-kink solution of the Sine-Gordon model, which can be seen as modeling a brane in the dimensions transverse to our four dimensional spacetime. We also analyze the stability of three particular models admitting kink or anti-kink like solutions and show that the stability equations are Poschl-Teller equations. In the second part after quickly reviewing available analytically known solutions, we present the numerical construction of the higher dimensional charged rotating black hole with a cosmological constant. Then, we present the black string solution and review the stability problem of the latter before investigating the existence of a de Sitter black string, which turns out not to be regular. Finally, we present the AdS counterpart of the black string solution and study its stability. Then, we construct numerically non uniform black strings, first in a perturbative approach, then in the full non linear regime. Our result suggest the existence of a thermodynamically stable phase of non uniform black string and point to the presence of a phase of AdS localized black hole. Moreover, we argue that the phase transition from uniform to non uniform black strings can be of order larger than one in any number of dimensions, which is not the case without a cosmological constant.
