Optimal control of membrane filtration systems

This paper studies an optimal control problem related to membrane filtration processes. A simple mathematical model of membrane fouling is used to capture the dynamic behavior of the filtration process which consists in the attachment of matter onto the membrane during the filtration period and the detachment of matter during the cleaning period. We consider the maximization of the net production of a membrane filtration system (i.e. the filtrate) over a finite time horizon, where control variable is the sequence of filtration/backwashing cycles over the operation time of process. Based on the Pontryagin Maximum Principle, we characterize the optimal control strategy and show that it presents a singular arc. Moreover we prove the existence of an additional switching curve before reaching the terminal state, and also the possibility of having a dispersal curve as a locus where two different strategies are both optimal.

Tangency property and prior-saturation points in minimal time problems in the plane

In this paper, we consider minimal time problems governed by control-affine-systems in the plane, and we focus on the synthesis problem in presence of a singular locus that involves a saturation point for the singular control. After giving sufficient conditions on the data ensuring occurence of a prior-saturation point and a switching curve, we show that the bridge (i.e., the optimal bang arc issued from the singular locus at this point) is tangent to the switching curve at the prior-saturation point. This property is proved using the Pontryagin Maximum Principle that also provides a set of non-linear equations that can be used to compute the prior-saturation point. These issues are illustrated on a fed-batch model in bioprocesses and on a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) model for which minimal time syntheses for the point-to-point problem are discussed.

On the degree of the polynomial defining a planar algebraic curves of constant width

In this paper, we consider a family of closed planar algebraic curves $\mathcal{C}$ which are given in parametrization form via a trigonometric polynomial $p$. When $\mathcal{C}$ is the boundary of a compact convex set, the polynomial $p$ represents the support function of this set. Our aim is to examine properties of the degree of the defining polynomial of this family of curves in terms of the degree of $p$. Thanks to the theory of elimination, we compute the total degree and the partial degrees of this polynomial, and we solve in addition a question raised by Rabinowitz in \cite{Rabi} on the lowest degree polynomial whose graph is a non-circular curve of constant width. Computations of partial degrees of the defining polynomial of algebraic surfaces of constant width are also provided in the same way.
