Sub-exponential mixing of open systems with particle-disk interactions

We consider a class of mechanical particle systems with deterministic particle-disk interactions coupled to Gibbs heat reservoirs at possibly different temperatures. We show that there exists a unique (non-equilibrium) steady state. This steady state is mixing, but not exponentially mixing, and all initial distributions converge to it. In addition, for a class of initial distributions, the rates of converge to the steady state are sub-exponential.

Degenerate random perturbations of Anosov diffeomorphisms

This paper deals with random perturbations of diffeomorphisms on n-dimensional Riemannian manifolds with distributions supported on k-dimensional disks, where k<n. First we demonstrate general but not very intuitive conditions which guarantee that all invariant measures for rank k random perturbations of $C^2$ diffeomorphisms are absolutely continuous with respect to the Riemannian measure on M. For two subclasses of Anosov diffeomorphisms: hyperbolic toral automorphisms and Anosov diffeomorphisms with codimension 1 stable manifolds, the above conditions are modified in order to relate k-dimensional disks that support the distributions to certain foliations that arise from Anosov diffeomorphisms. We conclude that generic rank k random perturbations have absolutely continuous invariant measures.

Ergodic properties of random billiards driven by thermostats

We consider a class of mechanical particle systems interacting with thermostats. Particles move freely between collisions with disk-shaped thermostats arranged periodically on the torus. Upon collision, an energy exchange occurs, in which a particle exchanges its tangential component of the velocity for a randomly drawn one from the Gaussian distribution with the variance proportional to the temperature of the thermostat. In the case when all temperatures are equal one can write an explicit formula for the stationary distribution. We consider the general case and show that there exists a unique absolutely continuous stationary distribution. Moreover under rather mild conditions on the initial distribution the corresponding Markov dynamics converges to the equilibrium with exponential rate. One of the main technical difficulties is related to a possible overheating of moving particle. However as we show in the paper non-compactness of the particle velocity can be effectively controlled.

Sub-exponential mixing of random billiards driven by thermostats

We study the class of open continuous-time mechanical particle systems introduced in the paper by Khanin and Yarmola [Ergodic Properties of Random Billiards Driven by Thermostats. Commun. Math. Phys. 320, no. 1, 121-147 (2013)]. Using the discrete-time results from that paper we demonstrate rigorously that, in continuous time, a unique steady state exists and is sub-exponentially mixing. Moreover, all initial distributions converge to the steady state and, for a large class of initial distributions, convergence to the steady state is sub-exponential. The main obstacle to exponential convergence is the existence of slow particles in the system.
