Ab initio electronic structure of the Sr$_2^+$ molecular ion

Molecular ions formed in cold hybrid ion-atom experiments may find interesting applications ranging from precision measurements to controlled chemical reactions. Here, we investigate electronic structure of the Sr$_2^+$ molecular ion, which may be produced by photoassociation of laser-cooled Sr$^+$ ions immersed into an ultracold gas of Sr atoms or by ionization of ultracold Sr$_2$ molecules. Using \textit{ab initio} electronic structure methods, such as the coupled cluster and configuration interaction ones with small-core relativistic energy-consistent pseudopotentials and large Gaussian basis sets, we calculate potential energy curves for the ground and 41 excited electronic states, and electric dipole transition moments between them. We show that alkaline-earth molecular ions despite of their apparently simple structure with three valence electrons only are challenging for state-of-the-art quantum chemistry methods due to their multireference nature and high density of states. Finally, we calculate and analyze Franck-Condon factors governing the photoionization of ground-state Sr$_2$ molecules into $^2Σ^+_u$ and $^2Σ^+_g$ states of Sr$_2^+$ molecular ions. The present results may be useful for studying and guiding formation and spectroscopy of cold Sr$_2^+$ molecular ions.

Interaction between LiH molecule and Li atom from state-of-the-art electronic structure calculations

State-of-the-art ab initio techniques have been applied to compute the potential energy surface for the lithium atom interacting with the lithium hydride molecule in the Born-Oppenheimer approximation. The interaction potential was obtained using a combination of the explicitly correlated unrestricted coupled-cluster method with single, double, and noniterative triple excitations [UCCSD(T)-F12] for the core-core and core-valence correlation and full configuration interaction for the valence-valence correlation. The potential energy surface has a global minimum 8743 cm^{-1} deep if the Li-H bond length is held fixed at the monomer equilibrium distance or 8825 cm^{-1} deep if it is allowed to vary. In order to evaluate the performance of the conventional CCSD(T) approach, calculations were carried out using correlation-consistent polarized valence X-tuple-zeta bases, with X ranging from 2 to 5. The contribution beyond the CCSD(T)-F12 model, obtained from full configuration interaction (FCI) calculations for the valence-valence correlation, was shown to be very small. At linear LiH-Li geometries the ground-state potential shows an avoided crossing with an ion-pair potential.Using both adiabatic and diabatic pictures we analyse the interaction between the two potential energy surfaces and its possible impact on the collisional dynamics. When the LiH bond is allowed to vary, a seam of conical intersections appears at C_{2v} geometries. At the linear LiH-Li geometry, the conical intersection is at a Li-H distance which is only slightly larger than the monomer equilibrium distance, but for nonlinear geometries it quickly shifts to Li-H distances that are well outside the classical turning points of the ground-state potential of LiH. Finally, the reaction channels for the exchange and insertion reactions are also analyzed.

Rovibrational interactions in linear triatomic molecules: a theoretical study in curvilinear vibrational coordinates

A variational solution to the rovibrational problem in curvilinear vibrational coordinates has been implemented and used to investigate the nuclear motions in several linear triatomic molecules, like HCN, OCS, and HCP. The dependence of the rovibrational energy levels on the rotational quantum numbers and the l-doubling has been studied. Two approximations to the rovibrational Hamiltonian have been examined, depending on the level of truncation of the potential energy operator. It turns out that truncation after the fifth order in the potential is sufficient to produce vibrational energies of high accuracy. An interesting feature of the present formulation of the problem in terms of the curvilinear vibrational coordinates is the explanation for the l-doubling of the rovibrational levels, which in this picture is interpreted as the result of the inequivalency of the average rotational constants in mutually perpendicular planes, rather than as the effect of the Coriolis-type interactions between the vibrational and rotational motions. The present theoretical results are compared with the available experimental data from high-resolution spectroscopy, as well as with other ab initio calculations.
