Dedicated Triggers for Displaced Jets using Timing Information from Electromagnetic Calorimeter at HL-LHC

In this paper, we study the prospect of ECAL barrel timing to develop triggers dedicated to long-lived particles decaying to jets, at the level-1 of HL-LHC. We construct over 20 timing based variables, and identify three of them which have better performances and are robust against increasing PU. We estimate the QCD prompt jet background rates accurately using the "stitching" procedure for varying thresholds defining our triggers, and compute the signal efficiencies for different LLP scenarios for a permissible background rate. The trigger efficiencies can go up to $\mathcal{O}(80\%)$ for the most optimal trigger for pair-produced heavy LLPs having high decay lengths, which degrades with decreasing mass and decay length of the LLP. We also discuss the prospect of including the information of displaced L1 tracks to our triggers, which further improves the results, especially for LLPs characterised by lower decay lengths.

A Radio Spectral Line Study of the 2-Jy IRAS-NVSS Sample: Part I

We present results from an on-going survey for the HI 21 cm line and the OH 18 cm lines in IR galaxies with the Arecibo 305 m Radio Telescope. The observations of 85 galaxies extracted from the 2 Jy IRAS-NVSS sample in the R.A. (B1950) range 20 h-00 h are reported in this paper. We detected the HI 21 cm line in 82 of these galaxies, with 18 being new detections, and the OH 18 cm lines in 7 galaxies, with 4 being new detections. In some cases, the HI spectra show the classic double-horned or single-peaked emission profiles. However, the majority exhibit distorted HI spectral features indicating that the galaxies are in interacting and/or merging systems. From these HI and OH observations, various properties of the sample are derived and reported.

Probing fundamental constant evolution with redshifted conjugate-satellite OH lines

We report Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope and Arecibo Telescope observations of the redshifted satellite OH-18cm lines at $z \sim 0.247$ towards PKS1413+135. The "conjugate" nature of these lines, with one line in emission and the other in absorption, but with the same shape, implies that the lines arise in the same gas. The satellite OH-18cm line frequencies also have different dependences on the fine structure constant $α$, the proton-electron mass ratio $μ= m_p/m_e$, and the proton gyromagnetic ratio $g_p$. Comparisons between the satellite line redshifts in conjugate systems can hence be used to probe changes in $α$, $μ$, and $g_p$, with few systematic effects. The technique yields the expected null result when applied to Cen.A, a nearby conjugate satellite system. For the $z \sim 0.247$ system towards PKS1413+135, we find, on combining results from the two telescopes, that $[ΔG/G] = (-1.18 \pm 0.46) \times 10^{-5}$ (weighted mean), where $G = g_p [μα^2]^{1.85}$; this is tentative evidence (with $2.6 σ$ significance, or at 99.1% confidence) for a smaller value of $α$, $μ$, and/or $g_p$ at z~0.247, i.e. at a lookback time of ~2.9 Gyrs. If we assume that the dominant change is in $α$, this implies $[Δα/α] = (-3.1 \pm 1.2) \times 10^{-6}$. We find no evidence that the observed offset might be produced by systematic effects, either due to observational or analysis procedures, or local conditions in the molecular cloud.

Detection of a multi-phase ISM at $z=0.2212$

We present sensitive Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) and high-resolution Arecibo HI 21-cm observations of the damped Lyman-$α$ absorber (DLA) at $z=0.2212$ towards OI 363. The spectra are in excellent agreement and yield a spin temperature $T_s = 890 \pm 160$ K, far higher than $T_s$ values measured in local spirals, but similar to values obtained in the majority of DLAs ($T_s \ga 1000$ K). The high velocity resolution of the Arecibo spectra enables us to obtain estimates of physical conditions in the absorbing clouds by fitting multiple Gaussians to the absorption profile. The spectra are well fit by a three-component model with two narrow and one wide components, with temperatures ${T_{k_1}} = 308 \pm 24$ K, ${T_{k_2}} = 180 \pm 30$ K and ${T_{k_3}} = 7600 \pm 1250$ K, respectively. The last of these is in excellent agreement with the expected temperatures for the WNM ($5000 - 8000$ K). The mere fact that components are seen with lower temperatures than the estimated $T_s$ implies that the absorber must have a multi-phase medium. We use the measured 21-cm optical depth and the above estimates of the kinetic temperature to obtain the HI column density in the various components. The total column density in the narrow components is found to be $\NHI (CNM) \le 1.9 \pm 0.25 \times 10^{20}$ cm, while that in the wide component is $\NHI (WNM) \ge 1.26 \pm 0.49 \times 10^{21}$ cm. Thus, the WNM contains at least 75% of the total HI in the $z = 0.2212$ DLA, unlike our Galaxy, in which the CNM and WNM have equitable contributions; this accounts for the difference in the spin temperatures of the $z = 0.2212$ system and local spirals, suggesting that the DLA is probably a dwarf or LSB type galaxy (abridged).
