Global polarization and spin alignment measurements

Recent experimental results on global polarization of hyperons and spin alignment of vector mesons in heavy-ion collisions are reviewed, especially in context of the energy dependence and particle species dependence. New results on local polarization along the beam direction at the LHC are discussed with previous measurements at RHIC. Future outlook of these measurements and possible future directions for better understanding of local vorticity field are briefly discussed.

Investigation of Experimental Observables in Search of the Chiral Magnetic Effect in Heavy-ion Collisions in the STAR experiment

The chiral magnetic effect (CME) is a novel transport phenomenon, arising from the interplay between quantum anomalies and strong magnetic fields in chiral systems. In high-energy nuclear collisions, the CME may survive the expansion of the quark-gluon plasma fireball and be detected in experiments. Over the past decade, the experimental searches for the CME have aroused extensive interest at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The main goal of this article is to investigate three pertinent experimental approaches: the $γ$ correlator, the $R$ correlator and the signed balance functions. We will exploit both simple Monte Carlo simulations and a realistic event generator (EBE-AVFD) to verify the equivalence in the kernel-component observables among these methods and to ascertain their sensitivities to the CME signal for the isobaric collisions at RHIC.

Ultra-relativistic nuclear collisions: where the spectators flow?

In high energy heavy ion collisions, the directed flow of particles is conventionally measured with respect to that of the projectile spectators, which is defined as positive $x$ direction. But it is not known if the spectators deflect in the "outward" direction or "inward" -- toward the center line of the collision. In this Letter we discuss how the measurements of the directed flow at mid-rapidity, especially in asymmetric collision such as Cu+Au, can be used to answer this question. We show that the existing data strongly favor the case that the spectators, in the ultrarelativistic collisions, on average deflect outwards.

Event geometrical anisotropy and fluctuation viewed by HBT interferometry

Azimuthal angle dependence of the pion source radii was measured applying the event shape selection at the PHENIX experiment. The measured final source eccentricity is found to be enhanced when selecting events with higher magnitude of the second-order flow vector, as well as the elliptic flow coefficient $v_{2}$. The spatial twist of the particle-emitting source was also explored using a transport model. Results indicate a possible twisted source in the final state due to the initial longitudinal fluctuations.
