The International Linear Collider: Report to Snowmass 2021

The International Linear Collider (ILC) is on the table now as a new global energy-frontier accelerator laboratory taking data in the 2030s. The ILC addresses key questions for our current understanding of particle physics. It is based on a proven accelerator technology. Its experiments will challenge the Standard Model of particle physics and will provide a new window to look beyond it. This document brings the story of the ILC up to date, emphasizing its strong physics motivation, its readiness for construction, and the opportunity it presents to the US and the global particle physics community.

Stringy excited baryons in holographic QCD

We analyze excited baryon states using a holographic dual of QCD that is defined on the basis of an intersecting D4/D8-brane system. Studies of baryons in this model have been made by regarding them as a topological soliton of a gauge theory on a five-dimensional curved spacetime. However, this allows one to obtain only a certain class of baryons. We attempt to present a framework such that a whole set of excited baryons can be treated in a systematic way. This is achieved by employing the original idea of Witten, which states that a baryon is described by a system composed of $N_c$ open strings emanating from a baryon vertex. We argue that this system can be formulated by an ADHM-type matrix model of Hashimoto-Iizuka-Yi together with an infinite tower of the open string massive modes. Using this setup, we work out the spectra of excited baryons and compare them with the experimental data. In particular, we derive a formula of the nucleon Regge trajectory assuming that the excited nucleons lying the trajectory are characterized by the excitation of a single open string attached on the baryon vertex.

AdS/CFT and local renormalization group with gauge fields

We revisit a study of local renormalization group (RG) with background gauge fields incorporated using the AdS/CFT correspondence. Starting with a $(d+1)$-dimensional bulk gravity coupled to scalars and gauge fields, we derive a local RG equation from a flow equation by working in the Hamilton-Jacobi formulation of the bulk theory. The Gauss's law constraint associated with gauge symmetry plays an important role. RG flows of the background gauge fields are governed by vector $β$-functions, and some interesting properties of them are known to follow. We give a systematic rederivation of them on the basis of the flow equation. Fixing an ambiguity of local counterterms in such a manner that is natural from the viewpoint of the flow equation, we determine all the coefficients uniquely appearing in the trace of the stress tensor for $d=4$. A relation between a choice of schemes and a Virial current is discussed. As a consistency check, these are found to satisfy the integrability conditions of local RG transformations. From these results, we are led to a proof of a holographic $c$-theorem by finding out a full family of schemes where a trace anomaly coefficient is related with a holographic $c$-function.

Supersymmetric Adler Functions and Holography

We perform several tests on a recent proposal by Shifman and Stepanyantz for an exact expression for the current correlation functions in supersymmetric gauge theories. We clarify the meaning of the relation in superconformal theories. In particular we show that it automatically follows from known relations between the current correlation functions and anomalies. It therefore also automatically matches between different dual realizations of the same superconformal theory. We use holographic examples as well as calculations in free theories to show that the proposed relation fails in theories with mass terms.

Holographic Baryons : Static Properties and Form Factors from Gauge/String Duality

In this paper, we study properties of baryons by using a holographic dual of QCD on the basis of the D4/D8-brane configuration, where baryons are described by a soliton. We first determine the asymptotic behavior of the soliton solution, which allows us to evaluate well-defined currents associated with the U(N_f)_L \times U(N_f)_R chiral symmetry. Using the currents, we compute static quantities of baryons such as charge radii and magnetic moments, and make a quantitative test with experiments. It is emphasized that not only the nucleon but also excited baryons, such as Δ, N(1440), N(1535) etc., can be analyzed systematically in this model. We also investigate the form factors and find that our form factors agree well with the results that are well-established empirically. With the form factors, the effective baryon-baryon-meson cubic coupling constants among their infinite towers in the model can be determined. Some physical implications following from these results are discussed.

Mesons as Open Strings in a Holographic Dual of QCD

We study meson spectrum obtained from massive open string modes in a holographic dual of QCD constructed on the basis of a D4/D8-brane configuration in type IIA string theory. The spectrum includes mesons with spin higher than one. Taking into account the effect of curved background perturbatively, we obtain a mass formula for these mesons, which exhibits the linear Regge behavior at the leading order with subleading non-linear corrections. We argue that the string spectrum captures some features of the observed meson spectrum. For example, a_2(1320), b_1(1235), π(1300), a_0(1450), etc., are identified as the first excited massive open string states and ρ_3(1690), π_2(1670), etc., are identified as the second excited states.

Nuclear Force from String Theory

We compute nuclear force in a holographic model of QCD on the basis of a D4-D8 brane configuration in type IIA string theory. Repulsive core of nucleons is quite important in nuclear physics, but its origin has not been well-understood in strongly-coupled QCD. We find that string theory via gauge/string duality deduces this repulsive core at short distance between nucleons. Since baryons in the model are realized as solitons given by Yang-Mills instanton configuration on flavor D8-branes, ADHM construction of two instantons probes well the nucleon interaction at short scale, which provides the nuclear force quantitatively. We obtain, as well as a tensor force, a central force which is strongly repulsive as suggested in experiments and lattice results. In particular, the nucleon-nucleon potential V(r) (as a function of the distance) scales as 1/r^2, which is peculiar to the holographic model. We compare our results with one-boson exchange model using the nucleon-nucleon-meson coupling obtained in our previous paper (arXiv:0806.3122).

O(N) and USp(N) QCD from String Theory

We propose a holographic dual of large N_c QCD with the gauge group O(N_c) and USp(N_c) and N_f flavors of massless quarks. This is constructed by adding O6-planes to an intersecting D4-D8 system in type IIA superstring theory. The holographic dual description is formulated in the Witten's D4-brane background with D8-branes and O6-planes embedded in it as probes. The D4-brane background gives rise to a smooth interpolation of D8-anti-D8 pairs and an O6-anti-O6 pair. We show that the resultant brane configuration explains geometrically the flavor symmetry breaking patterns in O(N_c) and USp(N_c) QCD that are caused by quark bilinear condensates. We next discuss that baryons can be realized as D4-anti-D4 pairs wrapped on S^4 that intersect with the O6-plane. By analyzing the tachyons on it, we reproduce the stability conditions of the baryons that are expected from the gauge theory viewpoint. The stable baryon configurations are classified systematically by using K-theory. We also give a similar analysis for the flux tubes and again reproduce the results that are consistent with QCD.

Baryons from instantons in holographic QCD

We consider aspects of dynamical baryons in a holographic dual of QCD that is proposed on the basis of a D4/D8-brane configuration. We construct a soliton solution carrying a unit baryon number and show that it is given by an instanton solution of four-dimensional Yang-Mills theory with fixed size. The Chern-Simons term on the flavor D8-branes plays a crucial role of protecting the instanton from collapsing to zero size. By quantizing the collective coordinates of the soliton, we work out the baryon spectra. Negative-parity baryons as well as baryons with higher spins and isospins can be obtained in a simple manner.

Low energy hadron physics in holographic QCD

We present a holographic dual of four-dimensional, large N_c QCD with massless flavors. This model is constructed by placing N_f probe D8-branes into a D4 background, where supersymmetry is completely broken. The chiral symmetry breaking in QCD is manifested as a smooth interpolation of D8 - anti-D8 pairs in the supergravity background. The meson spectrum is examined by analyzing a five-dimensional Yang-Mills theory that originates from the non-Abelian DBI action of the probe D8-brane. It is found that our model yields massless pions, which are identified with Nambu-Goldstone bosons associated with the chiral symmetry breaking. We obtain the low-energy effective action of the pion field and show that it contains the usual kinetic term of the chiral Lagrangian and the Skyrme term. A brane configuration that defines a dynamical baryon is identified with the Skyrmion. We also derive the effective action including the lightest vector meson. Our model is closely related to that in the hidden local symmetry approach, and we obtain a Kawarabayashi-Suzuki-Riazuddin-Fayyazuddin-type relation among the couplings. Furthermore, we investigate the Chern-Simons term on the probe brane and show that it leads to the Wess-Zumino-Witten term. The mass of the η' meson is also considered, and we formulate a simple derivation of the η' mass term satisfying the Witten-Veneziano formula from supergravity.

M theory and the ``integrating in'' method with an antisymmetric tensor

Recently, a non-hyperelliptic curve describing the Coulomb branch of N=2 SUSY $SU(N_c)$ Yang-Mills theory with an antisymmetric tensor matter was proposed using a configuration of a single M theory five-brane. We study the singular surface in the moduli space of the curve to compare it with results from the ``integrating in'' method in field theory. In order to achieve the consistency, we find it necessary to take account of an additional superpotential $W_Δ$ which has been neglected so far. The explicit form of $W_Δ$ is worked out.

Vacuum Structures of Supersymmetric Yang-Mills Theories in $1+1$ Dimensions

Vacuum structures of supersymmetric (SUSY) Yang-Mills theories in $1+1$ dimensions are studied with the spatial direction compactified. SUSY allows only periodic boundary conditions for both fermions and bosons. By using the Born-Oppenheimer approximation for the weak coupling limit, we find that the vacuum energy vanishes, and hence the SUSY is unbroken. Other boundary conditions are also studied, especially the antiperiodic boundary condition for fermions which is related to the system in finite temperatures. In that case we find for gaugino bilinears a nonvanishing vacuum condensation which indicates instanton contributions.

Mass Spectra of Supersymmetric Yang-Mills Theories in 1+1 Dimensions

Physical mass spectra of supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories in 1+1 dimensions are evaluated in the light-cone gauge with a compact spatial dimension. The supercharges are constructed and the infrared regularization is unambiguously prescribed for supercharges, instead of the light-cone Hamiltonian. This provides a manifestly supersymmetric infrared regularization for the discretized light-cone approach. By an exact diagonalization of the supercharge matrix between up to several hundred color singlet bound states, we find a rapidly increasing density of states as mass increases.
