Competition of superconductivity with the structural transition in Mo3Sb7

Prior to the superconducting transition at Tc = 2.3 K, Mo3Sb7 undergoes a symmetry-lowering, cubic-to-tetragonal structural transition at Ts = 53 K. We have monitored the pressure dependence of these two transitions by measuring the resistivity of Mo3Sb7 single crystals under various hydrostatic pressures up to 15 GPa. The application of external pressure enhances Tc but suppresses Ts until Pc ~ 10 GPa, above which a pressure-induced first order structural transition takes place and is manifested by the phase coexistence in the pressure range 8 < P < 12 GPa. The cubic phase above 12 GPa is also found to be superconducting with a higher Tc =6 K that decreases slightly with further increasing pressure. The variations with pressure of Tc and Ts satisfy the Bilbro-McMillan equation, i.e. Tc^nTs^(1-n) = constant, thus suggesting the competition of superconductivity with the structural transition that has been proposed to be accompanied with a spin-gap formation at Ts. This scenario is supported by our first-principles calculations which imply the plausible importance of magnetism that competes with the superconductivity in Mo3Sb7.

Measurement of absorption and charge exchange of $π^+$ on carbon

The combined cross section for absorption and charge exchange interactions of positively charged pions with carbon nuclei for the momentum range 200 MeV/c to 300 MeV/c have been measured with the DUET experiment at TRIUMF. The uncertainty is reduced by nearly half compared to previous experiments. This result will be a valuable input to existing models to constrain pion interactions with nuclei.

First Muon-Neutrino Disappearance Study with an Off-Axis Beam

We report a measurement of muon-neutrino disappearance in the T2K experiment. The 295-km muon-neutrino beam from Tokai to Kamioka is the first implementation of the off-axis technique in a long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment. With data corresponding to 1.43 10**20 protons on target, we observe 31 fully-contained single muon-like ring events in Super-Kamiokande, compared with an expectation of 104 +- 14 (syst) events without neutrino oscillations. The best-fit point for two-flavor nu_mu -> nu_tau oscillations is sin**2(2 theta_23) = 0.98 and |Δm**2_32| = 2.65 10**-3 eV**2. The boundary of the 90 % confidence region includes the points (sin**2(2 theta_23),|Δm**2_32|) = (1.0, 3.1 10**-3 eV**2), (0.84, 2.65 10**-3 eV**2) and (1.0, 2.2 10**-3 eV**2).

Quantum Hall effect in multilayered massless Dirac fermion systems with tilted cones

We report the first observation of Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations and quantized Hall resistance in the multilayered massless Dirac fermion system $α$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$I$_3$ with tilted cones. Holes were injected into the thin crystal fixed on a polyethylene naphthalate (PEN) substrate by contact electrification. The detection of SdH oscillations whose phase was modified by Berry's phase $π$ strongly suggested that the carrier doping was successful in this system. We succeeded in detecting the quantum Hall effect (QHE) with the steps which is the essence of two dimensional Dirac fermion systems. The number of effectively doped layers was examined to be two in this device. We reveal that the correlation between effective layers plays an important role in QHE.

Identification of high energy ions using backscattered particles in laser-driven ion acceleration with cluster-gas targets

A new diagnosis method for high energy ions utilizing a single CR-39 detector mounted on plastic plates is demonstrated to identify the presence of the high energy component beyond the CR-39's detection threshold limit. On irradiation of the CR-39 detector unit with a 25 MeV per nucleon He ion beam from conventional rf-accelerators, a large number of etch pits having elliptical opening shapes are observed on the rear surface of the CR-39. Detailed investigations reveal that these etch pits are created by heavy ions inelastically backscattered from the plastic plates. This ion detection method is applied to laser-driven ion acceleration experiments using cluster-gas targets, and ion signals with energies up to 50 MeV per nucleon are identified.

Measurements of the T2K neutrino beam properties using the INGRID on-axis near detector

Precise measurement of neutrino beam direction and intensity was achieved based on a new concept with modularized neutrino detectors. INGRID (Interactive Neutrino GRID) is an on-axis near detector for the T2K long baseline neutrino oscillation experiment. INGRID consists of 16 identical modules arranged in horizontal and vertical arrays around the beam center. The module has a sandwich structure of iron target plates and scintillator trackers. INGRID directly monitors the muon neutrino beam profile center and intensity using the number of observed neutrino events in each module. The neutrino beam direction is measured with accuracy better than 0.4 mrad from the measured profile center. The normalized event rate is measured with 4% precision.

Modeling of the Magnetic Susceptibilities of the Ambient- and High-Pressure Phases of (VO)_{2}P_{2}O_{7}

The magnetic susceptibilities chi versus temperature T of powders and single crystals of the ambient-pressure (AP) and high-pressure (HP) phases of (VO)_{2}P_{2}O_{7} are analyzed using an accurate theoretical prediction of chi(T, J1, J2) for the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic alternating-exchange (J1, J2) Heisenberg chain. The results are consistent with recent models with two distinct types of alternating-exchange chains in the AP phase and a single type in the HP phase. The spin gap for each type of chain is derived from the respective set of two fitted alternating exchange constants and the one-magnon dispersion relation for each of the two types of chains in the AP phase is predicted. The influences of interchain coupling on the derived intrachain exchange constants, spin gaps, and dispersion relations are estimated using a mean-field approximation for the interchain coupling. The accuracies of the spin gaps obtained using fits to the low-T chi(T) data by theoretical low-T approximations are determined. The results of these studies are compared with previously reported estimates of the exchange couplings and spin gaps in the AP and HP phases and with the magnon dispersion relations in the AP phase measured previously using inelastic neutron scattering.
