Evidence of a near-threshold resonance in $^{11}$B relevant to the $β$-delayed proton emission of $^{11}$Be

A narrow near-threshold proton-emitting resonance (Ex = 11.4 MeV, J$^π$ = 1/2$^{+}$ and $Γ_{p}$ = 4.4 keV) was directly observed in $^{11}$B via proton resonance scattering. This resonance was previously inferred in the $β$-delayed proton emission of the neutron halo nucleus $^{11}$Be. The good agreement between both experimental results serves as a ground to confirm the existence of such exotic decay and the particular behavior of weakly bound nuclei coupled to the continuum. $R$-matrix analysis shows a sizable partial decay width for both, proton and $α$ emission channels.

First-order superfluid to Mott-insulator phase transitions in spinor condensates

We observe evidence of first-order superfluid to Mott-insulator quantum phase transitions in a lattice-confined antiferromagnetic spinor Bose-Einstein condensate. The observed signatures include hysteresis effect and significant heatings across the phase transitions. The nature of the phase transitions is found to strongly depend on the ratio of the quadratic Zeeman energy to the spin-dependent interaction. Our observations are qualitatively understood by the mean field theory, and in addition suggest tuning the quadratic Zeeman energy is a new approach to realize superfluid to Mott-insulator phase transitions.

Antiferromagnetic spinor condensates in a two-dimensional optical lattice

We experimentally demonstrate that spin dynamics and the phase diagram of spinor condensates can be conveniently tuned by a two-dimensional optical lattice. Spin population oscillations and a lattice-tuned separatrix in phase space are observed in every lattice where a substantial superfluid fraction exists. In a sufficiently deep lattice, we observe a phase transition from a longitudinal polar phase to a broken-axisymmetry phase in steady states of lattice-confined spinor condensates. The steady states are found to depend sigmoidally on the lattice depth and exponentially on the magnetic field. We also introduce a phenomenological model that semi-quantitatively describes our data without adjustable parameters.

Design of MEBT for the Project X Injector Experiment at Fermilab

The Project X Injector Experiment (PXIE), a test bed for the Project X front end, will be completed at Fermilab at FY12-16. One of the challenging goals of PXIE is demonstration of the capability to form a 1 mA H- beam with an arbitrary selected bunch pattern from the initially 5 mA 162.5 MHz CW train. The bunch selection will be made in the Medium Energy Beam Transport (MEBT) at 2.1 MeV by diverting undesired bunches to an absorber. This paper presents the MEBT scheme and describes development of its elements, including the kickers and absorber.

Dynamics in spinor condensates controlled by a microwave dressing field

We experimentally study spin dynamics in a sodium antiferromagnetic spinor condensate with off-resonant microwave pulses. In contrast to a magnetic field, a microwave dressing field enables us to explore rich spin dynamics under the influence of a negative net quadratic Zeeman shift $q_{\rm net}$. We find an experimental signature to determine the sign of $q_{\rm net}$, and observe harmonic spin population oscillations at every $q_{\rm net}$ except near each separatrix in phase space where spin oscillation period diverges. In the negative and positive $q_{\rm net}$ regions, we also observe a remarkably different relationship between each separatrix and the magnetization. Our data confirms an important prediction derived from the mean-field theory: spin-mixing dynamics in spin-1 condensates substantially depends on the sign of the ratio of $q_{\rm net}$ and the spin-dependent interaction energy. This work may thus be the first to use only one atomic species to reveal mean-field spin dynamics, especially the separatrix, which are predicted to appear differently in spin-1 antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic spinor condensates.

Progress with PXIE MEBT Chopper

A capability to provide a large variety of bunch patterns is crucial for the concept of the Project X serving MW-range beam to several experiments simultaneously. This capability will be realized by the Medium Energy Beam Transport's (MEBT) chopping system that will divert 80% of all bunches of the initially 5mA, 2.1 MeV CW 162.5 MHz beam to an absorber according to a pre-programmed bunch-by-bunch selection. Being considered one of the most challenging components, the chopping system will be tested at the Project X Injector Experiment (PXIE) facility that will be built at Fermilab as a prototype of the Project X front end. The bunch deflection will be made by two identical sets of travelling-wave kickers working in sync. Currently, two versions of the kickers are being investigated: a helical 200 Ohm structure with a switching-type 500 V driver and a planar 50 Ohm structure with a linear 250 V amplifier. This paper will describe the chopping system scheme and functional specifications for the kickers, present results of electromagnetic measurements of the models, discuss possible driver schemes, and show a conceptual mechanical design.
