Quantum properties of spherical semiconductor quantum dots

Quantum effects at the nanometric level have been observed in many confined structures, and particularly in semiconductor quantum dots (QDs). In this work, we propose a theoretical improvement of the so-called effective mass approximation with the introduction of an effective pseudo-potential. This advantageously allows analytic calculations to a large extent, and leads to a better agreement with experimental data. We have obtained, as a function of the QD radius, in precise domains of validity, the QD ground state energy, its Stark and Lamb shifts. An observable Lamb shift is notably predicted for judiciously chosen semiconductor and radius. Despite the intrinsic non-degeneracy of the QD energy spectrum, we propose a Gedankenexperiment based on the use of the Casimir effect to test its observability. Finally, the effect of an electromagnetic cavity on semiconductor QDs is also considered, and its Purcell factor evaluated. This last result raises the possibility of having a QD-LASER emitting in the range of visible light.

Some theoretical results on semiconductor spherical quantum dots

We use an improved version of the standard effective mass approximation model to describe quantum effects in nanometric semiconductor Quantum Dots (QDs). This allows analytic computation of relevant quantities to a very large extent. We obtain, as a function of the QD radius, in precise domains of validity, the QD excitonic ground state energy and its Stark and Lamb shifts. Finally, the Purcell effect in QDs is shown to lead to potential QD-LASER emitting in the range of visible light.

Quantum Group Approach to a soluble vertex model with generalized ice-rule

Using the representation of the quantum group $SL_q$(2) by the Weyl ope\-ra\-tors of the canonical commutation relations in quantum mechanics, we construct and solve a new vertex model on a square lattice. Random variables on horizontal bonds are Ising variables, and those on the vertical bonds take half positive integer values. The vertices is subjected to a genera\-li\-zed form of the so-called ``ice-rule'', its property are studied in details and its free energy calculated with the method of quantum inverse scattering. Remarkably in analogy with the usual six-vertex model, there exists a ``Free-Fermion'' limit with a novel rich operator structure. The existing algebraic structure suggests a possible connection with a lattice neutral plasma of charges, via the Fermion-Boson correspondence.
