Anomalously Weak Cooper Pair-breaking by Exchange Energy in Ferromagnet/Superconductor Bilayers

We report the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ vs. thickness $d_F$ of Ferromagnet/Superconductor (F/S) bilayers, where F is a strong $3d$ ferromagnet (Ni, Ni$_{0.81}$Fe$_{0.19}$ (Permalloy), Co$_{0.5}$Fe$_{0.5}$) and S = Nb, taken from superfluid density measurements rather than resistivity. By regrouping the many physical parameters that appear in theory, we show that the effective exchange energy is determined from the F film thickness $d_F$ where $T_c$ vs. $d_F$ begins to flatten out. Using this rearranged theory we conclude: 1) the effective exchange energy, $E_{ex}$, is about 15 times smaller than measured by ARPES and 5 times smaller than deduced in previous studies similar to ours; 2) the dirty-limit coherence length, $ξ_{F}$, for Cooper pairs in F is larger than the electron mean free path, $\ell_F$; and 3) the $3d$-F/Nb interface is enough of a barrier that Cooper pairs typically must hit it several times before getting through. The Py/Nb and CoFe/Nb interfaces are more transparent than the Ni/Nb interface.

Evidence of Two-Dimensional Quantum Critical Behavior in the Superfluid Density of Deeply Underdoped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x

Evidence of two-dimensional (2D) quantum critical fluctuations is observed in the superfluid density ns(T) \propto $λ$ -2(T) of deeply underdoped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x (Bi-2212) films, indicating that quantum fluctuations play a dominant role in underdoped cuprates in general. 2D fluctuations are expressed by the linear scaling, Tc \propto ns(0). 2D scaling in Bi-2212 contrasts with 3D scaling seen in the much less anisotropic YBa2Cu3O7-x. Quantum critical fluctuations could also account for the absence of thermal critical behavior in λ^{-2}(T) of strongly underdoped Bi-2212 samples, Tc < 48 K.

Superfluid density in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x from optimal doping to severe underdoping and its implications

Due to their proximity to an antiferromagnetic phase and to the mysterious pseudogap, underdoped cuprates have attracted great interest in the high Tc community for many years. A central issue concerns the role of quantum and thermal fluctuations of the phase of the superconducting order parameter. The evolution of superfluid density ns with temperature and doping is a powerful probe of this physics. Here, we report superfluid density measurements on underdoped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x (Bi-2212) films at much lower dopings than have been achieved previously, and with excellent control on doping level - Tc ranges from Tc,min ~ 6K to Tc,max ~ 80K in steps of about 5K. Most famous studies on Bi-2212 like angle-resolved photoemission and scanning probe microscopy are surface-sensitive while superfluid density measurements are bulk-sensitive. We find that strong two-dimensional quantum fluctuations are evident in the observed linear scaling of Tc with ns(0) when Tc is below about 45 K, which contrasts with three-dimensional quantum fluctuations evident in the square root scaling, Tc $\propto \sqrt$ns(0), seen in the much less anisotropic cuprate, YBa2Cu3O7 (YBCO). On the other hand, consistent with YBCO, ns(T) in severely underdoped Bi-2212 loses its strong downward curvature near Tc, becoming quasi-linear without any obvious critical behavior near Tc. We argue that the quasi-linear T dependence arises from thermal phase fluctuations, although the current theory needs modification in order to understand some features.

Superfluid density measurements of Ba(CoxFe1-x)2As2 films near optimal doping

We report the first direct measurements of superfluid density, ns(T) \propto λ-2(T), in films of Fe-pnictide superconductors. The magnetic penetration depth, λ(0), in our epitaxial, single-crystal Ba(CoxFe1-x)2As2 films near optimal doping (x=0.08) is 350 nm to 430 nm, comparable to bulk single crystals. The T-dependence of λ-2 indicates a small s-wave gap, 2Δ(0)/kBTc = 2.2 \pm 0.1. In detail, λ has power-law behavior at low T: λ(T)/λ(0) - 1 \approx 0.60*(T/Tc)2.5\pm0.1. The small gap, together with power-law behavior at low T, suggests strong intraband scattering on the larger-gap Fermi surface and significant interband scattering between large-gap and small-gap Fermi surfaces.

Anomalous Noise in the Pseudogap Regime of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$

An unusual noise component is found near and below about 250 K in the normal state of underdoped YBCO and Ca-YBCO films. This noise regime, unlike the more typical noise above 250 K, has features expected for a symmetry-breaking collective electronic state. These include large individual fluctuators, a magnetic sensitivity, and aging effects. A possible interpretation in terms of fluctuating charge nematic order is presented.

Anomalously Sharp Superconducting Transitions in Overdoped $La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4}$ Films

We present measurements of $ab$-plane resistivity $ρ_{ab}(T)$ and superfluid density [$\propto λ^{-2}$, $λ$ = magnetic penetration depth] in $La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4}$ films. As Sr concentration $x$ exceeds about 0.22, the superconducting transition sharpens dramatically, becoming as narrow as 200 mK near the super-to-normal metal quantum critical point. At the same time, $ρ_{ab}(T)$, $λ^{-2}(T)$, and transition temperature $T_c$ decrease, and upward curvature develops in $λ^{-2}(T)$. Given the sharp transitions, we interpret these results in the context of a homogeneous d-wave superconducting state, with elastic scattering that is enhanced relative to underdoped LSCO due to weaker electron correlations. This interpretation conflicts with the viewpoint that the overdoped state is inhomogeneous due to phase separation into superconducting and normal metal regions.

Superconductor-to-Metal Quantum Phase Transition in Overdoped $La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4$

We investigate $T_c$ and magnetic penetration depth $λ(T)$ near the superconductor-metal quantum phase transition in overdoped $La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4}$ films. Both $T_c$ and superfluid density $n_s$, $\propto λ^{-2}$, decrease with overdoping. They obey the scaling relation $T_c \propto [λ^{-2}(0)]^α$ with $α\approx 1/2$. We discuss this result in the frameworks of disordered d-wave superconductors and of scaling near quantum critical points. Our result, and the linear scaling ($α\approx 1$) found for the more anisotropic $Tl_2Ba_2CuO_{6+δ}$, can both be understood in terms of quantum critical scaling, with different dimensionalities for fluctuations.
