Measurement of differential cross sections for Σ+pΣ^+p elastic scattering in the momentum range 0.44-0.80 GeV/c

We performed a novel Σ+pΣ^+ p scattering experiment at the J-PARC Hadron Experimental Facility. Approximately 2400 Σ+pΣ^+ p elastic scattering events were identified from 4.9×1074.9 \times 10^7 tagged Σ+Σ^+ particles in the Σ+Σ^+ momentum range 0.44 -- 0.80 GeV/cc. The differential cross sections of the Σ+pΣ^+ p elastic scattering were derived with much better precision than in previous experiments. The obtained differential cross sections were approximately 2 mb/sr or less, which were not as large as those predicted by the fss2 and FSS models based on the quark cluster model in the short-range region. By performing phase-shift analyses for the obtained differential cross sections, we experimentally derived the phase shifts of the 3S1^3 S_1 and 1P1^1 P_1 channels for the first time. The phase shift of the 3S1^3 S_1 channel, where a large repulsive core was predicted owing to the Pauli effect between quarks, was evaluated as 20∘<∣δ3S1∣<35∘20^\circ<|δ_{^3S_1}|<35^\circ. If the sign of δ3S1δ_{^3S_1} is assumed to be negative, the interaction in this channel is moderately repulsive, as the Nijmegen extended-sort-core models predicted.

Precise measurement of differential cross sections of the Σ-p --> Λ n reaction in momentum range 470-650 MeV/c

The differential cross sections of the Σ-p --> Λ n reaction were measured accurately for the Σ- momentum (p_{Σ}) ranging from 470 to 650 MeV/c at the J-PARC Hadron Experimental Facility. Precise angular information about the Σ-p --> Λ n reaction was obtained for the first time by detecting approximately 100 reaction events at each angular step of Δcosθ = 0.1. The obtained differential cross sections show slightly forward-peaking structure in the measured momentum regions. The cross sections integrated for -0.7 < cosθ < 1.0 were obtained as 22.5 +- 0.68 (stat.) +- 0.65 (syst.) mb and 15.8 +-0.83(stat.) +- 0.52 (syst.) mb for 470<p_{Σ}(MeV/c)<550 and 550<p_{Σ}(MeV/c)<650, respectively. These results show a drastic improvement compared to past measurements of the hyperon-proton scattering experiments. They will play essential roles in updating the theoretical models of the baryon-baryon interactions.

Observation of Coulomb-assisted nuclear bound state of Ξ−Ξ^--14^{14}N system

In an emulsion-counter hybrid experiment performed at J-PARC, a Ξ−Ξ^- absorption event was observed which decayed into twin single-ΛΛ hypernuclei. Kinematic calculations enabled a unique identification of the reaction process as Ξ−+14Ξ^{-} + ^{14}N → Λ10\ \rightarrow\ ^{10}_ΛBe + Λ5^5_ΛHe. For the binding energy of the Ξ−Ξ^{-} hyperon in the Ξ−Ξ^--14^{14}N system a value of 1.27±0.211.27 \pm 0.21 MeV was deduced. The energy level of Ξ−Ξ^- is likely a nuclear 1p1p state which indicates a weak ΞNΞN-ΛΛΛΛ coupling.

Observation of Spin-Dependent Charge Symmetry Breaking in ΛNΛN Interaction: Gamma-Ray Spectroscopy of Λ4^4_{Λ}He

The energy spacing between the ground-state spin doublet of Λ4^4_ΛHe(1+^+,0+^+) was determined to be 1406±2±21406 \pm 2 \pm 2 keV, by measuring γγ rays for the 1+→0+1^+ \to 0^+ transition with a high efficiency germanium detector array in coincidence with the 4^4He(K−,π−)(K^-,π^-) Λ4^4_ΛHe reaction at J-PARC. In comparison to the corresponding energy spacing in the mirror hypernucleus Λ4^4_ΛH, the present result clearly indicates the existence of charge symmetry breaking (CSB) in ΛNΛN interaction. It is also found that the CSB effect is large in the 0+0^+ ground state but is by one order of magnitude smaller in the 1+1^+ excited state, demonstrating that the ΛNΛN CSB interaction has spin dependence.

High-resolution search for the Θ+Θ^{+} pentaquark via a pion-induced reaction at J-PARC

The pentaquark Θ+Θ^+ has been searched for via the π−p→K−Xπ^-p \to K^-X reaction with beam momenta of 1.92 and 2.01 GeV/cc at J-PARC. A missing mass resolution of 2 MeV (FWHM) was achieved but no sharp peak structure was observed. The upper limits on the production cross section averaged over the scattering angle from 2∘^{\circ} to 15∘^{\circ} in the laboratory frame were found to be less than 0.28 μμb/sr at the 90\% confidence level for both the 1.92- and 2.01-GeV/cc data. The systematic uncertainty of the upper limits was controlled within 10\%. Constraints on the Θ+Θ^+ decay width were also evaluated with a theoretical calculation using effective Lagrangian. The present result implies that the width should be less than 0.36 and 1.9 MeV for the spin-parity of 1/2+1/2^+ and 1/2−1/2^-, respectively.

Near threshold angular distributions of the 2^2H(γ,Λ)(γ,Λ)X reaction

A study of the 2^2H(γ,Λ)(γ,Λ)X reaction was performed using a tagged photon beam at the Research Center for Electron Photon Science (ELPH), Tohoku University. The photoproduced ΛΛ was measured in the pπ−p{π^{-}} decay channel by the upgraded Neutral Kaon Spectrometer (NKS2+). The momentum integrated differential cross section was determined as a function of the scatting angle of ΛΛ in the laboratory frame for five energy bins. Our results indicated a peak in the cross section at angles smaller than cosθΛLABθ^{LAB}_Λ = 0.960.96. The experimentally obtained angular distributions were compared to isobar models, Kaon-Maid (KM) and Saclay-Lyon A (SLA), in addition to the composite Regge-plus-resonance (RPR) model. Both SLA(rK1KγK_{1}K_γ = −1.4-1.4) and RPR describe the data quite well in contrast to the KM model, which substantially under predicted the cross section at the most forward angles. With the anticipated finalized data on ΛΛ integrated and momentum dependent differential cross sections of 2^2H(γ,Λ)(γ,Λ)X~\cite{Kaneta_Beckford}, we present our findings on the angular distributions in this report.

Search for Λ6^6_ΛH hypernucleus by the 6^6Li(π−,K+)(π^-,K^+) reaction at pπ−p_{π^-} = 1.2 GeV/cc

We have carried out an experiment to search for a neutron-rich hypernucleus, Λ6^6_ΛH, by the 6^6Li(π−,K+π^-,K^+) reaction at pπ−p_{π^-} =1.2 GeV/cc. The obtained missing mass spectrum with an estimated energy resolution of 3.2 MeV (FWHM) showed no peak structure corresponding to the Λ6^6_ΛH hypernucleus neither below nor above the Λ4^4_ΛH+2n+2n particle decay threshold. An upper limit of the production cross section for the bound Λ6^6_ΛH hypernucleus was estimated to be 1.2 nb/sr at 90% confidence level.

Measurements of the photon induced production of ΛΛ in the 2^2H(γ,Λ)(γ,Λ)X process at threshold energies

An experiment was carried out with the NKS2+ in 2010 at the Research Center for Electron Photon Science (ELPH), in which tagged photon beams in the range of 0.8 ≤\le EγE_γ ≤\le 1.1 GeV were impinged on a liquid 2^2H target positioned at the center of the NKS2+. The produced ΛΛ was subsequently detected by the pπ−p{π^{-}} decay channel. Integrated cross sections of the 2^2H(γ,Λ)(γ,Λ)X in the angular region of 0.9 ≤\le cos⁡θΛLAB\cosθ_Λ^{LAB} ≤\le 1.0 was derived and compared with preceding experimental results of the NKS2 collaboration. In addition, the momentum spectra for two photon energy regions were also procured. The ΛΛ angle dependent cross sections as a function of the scattering angle in the laboratory system was additionally deduced. We present the latest results on the excitation function of ΛΛ photoproduction, the momentum distributions, angular distributions, and polarization.

Report on strangeness photoproduction experiments performed with the Neutral Kaon Spectrometer 2

An experiment designed to investigate the strangeness photoproduction process using a tagged photon beam in the energy range of 0.90 -1.08 GeV incident on a liquid deuterium target was successfully performed. The purpose of the experiment was to measure the production of neutral kaons and the lambda particles on a deuteron. The generation of photo produced particles was verified by the measurement of their decayed charged particles in the Neutral Kaon Spectrometer 2. The reconstructed invariant mass distributions were achieved by selecting events where two or more particles tracks were identified. Preliminary results are presented here.

Search for the Θ+Θ^{+} pentaquark via the π−p→K−Xπ^-p\to K^-X reaction at 1.92 GeV/cc

The Θ+Θ^+ pentaquark baryon was searched for via the π−p→K−Xπ^-p\to K^-X reaction in a missing-mass resolution of 1.4 MeV/c2c^2(FWHM) at J-PARC. π−π^- meson beams were incident on the liquid hydrogen target with the beam momentum of 1.92 GeV/cc. No peak structure corresponding to the Θ+Θ^+ mass was observed. The upper limit of the production cross section averaged over the scattering angle of 2∘^{\circ} to 15∘^{\circ} in the laboratory frame was obtained to be 0.26 μμb/sr in the mass region of 1.51−-1.55 GeV/c2c^2.The upper limit of the Θ+Θ^+ decay width using the effective Lagrangian approach was obtained to be 0.72 MeV/c2c^2 and 3.1 MeV/c2c^2 for JΘP=1/2+J^P_Θ=1/2^+ and JΘP=1/2−J^P_Θ=1/2^-, respectively.
