How do I introduce Schrödinger equation during the quantum mechanics course?

In this paper I explain how I usually introduce the Schrödinger equation during the quantum mechanics course. My preferred method is the chronological one. Since the Schrödinger equation belongs to a special case of wave equations I start the course with introducing the wave equation. The Schrödinger equation is derived with the help of the two quantum concepts introduced by Max Planck, Einstein, and de Broglie, i.e., the energy of a photon $E=\hbarω$ and the wavelength of the de Broglie wave $λ=h/p$. Finally, the difference between the classical wave equation and the quantum Schrödinger one is explained in order to help the students to grasp the meaning of quantum wavefunction $Ψ({\bf r},t)$. A comparison of the present method to the approaches given by the authors of quantum mechanics textbooks as well as that of the original Nuffield A level is presented. It is found that the present approach is different from those given by these authors, except by Weinberg or Dicke and Wittke. However, the approach is in line with the original Nuffield A level one.

Extraction of the proton charge radius from experiments

Static properties of hadrons such as their radii and other moments of the electric and magnetic distributions can only be extracted using theoretical methods and not directly measured from experiments. As a result, discrepancies between the extracted values from different precision measurements can exist. The proton charge radius, $r_p$, which is either extracted from electron proton elastic scattering data or from hydrogen atom spectroscopy seems to be no exception. The value $r_p = 0.84087(39)$ fm extracted from muonic hydrogen spectroscopy is about 4% smaller than that obtained from electron proton scattering or standard hydrogen spectroscopy. The resolution of this so called proton radius puzzle has been attempted in many different ways over the past six years. The present article reviews these attempts with a focus on the methods of extracting the radius.

Viscosities of Gluon Dominated QGP Model within Relativistic Non-Abelian Hydrodynamics

Based on the first principle calculation, a Lagrangian for the system describing quarks, gluons, and their interactions, is constructed. Ascribed to the existence of dissipative behavior as a consequence of strong interaction within quark-gluon plasma (QGP) matter, auxiliary terms describing viscosities are constituted into the Lagrangian. Through a "kind" of phase transition, gluon field is redefined as a scalar field with four-vector velocity inherently attached. Then, the Lagrangian is elaborated further to produce the energy-momentum tensor of dissipative fluid-like system and the equation of motion (EOM). By imposing the law of energy and momentum conservation, the values of shear and bulk viscosities are analytically calculated. Our result shows that, at the energy level close to hadronization, the bulk viscosity is bigger than shear viscosity. By making use of the conjectured values $η/ s \sim 1 / 4π$ and $ζ/ s \sim 1$, the ratio of bulk to shear viscosity is found to be $ζ/ η> 4 π$.

$K^+Λ$ and $K^+Σ^0$ photoproduction with fine center-of-mass energy resolution

Measurements of $γp \rightarrow K^{+} Λ$ and $γp \rightarrow K^{+} Σ^0$ cross-sections have been obtained with the photon tagging facility and the Crystal Ball calorimeter at MAMI-C. The measurement uses a novel $K^+$ meson identification technique in which the weak decay products are characterized using the energy and timing characteristics of the energy deposit in the calorimeter, a method that has the potential to be applied at many other facilities. The fine center-of-mass energy ($W$) resolution and statistical accuracy of the new data results in a significant impact on partial wave analyses aiming to better establish the excitation spectrum of the nucleon. The new analyses disfavor a strong role for quark-diquark dynamics in the nucleon.

Boson star at finite temperature

By using a simple thermodynamical method we confirm the finding of Chavanis and Harko that stable Bose-Einstein condensate stars can form. However, by using a thermodynamically consistent boson equation of state, we obtain a less massive Bose-Einstein condensate star compared to the one predicted by Chavanis and Harko. We also obtain that the maximum mass of a boson star is insensitive to the change of matter temperature. However, the mass of boson star with relatively large radius depends significantly on the temperature of the boson matter.

Electromagnetic production of $KΣ$ on the nucleon near threshold

Photo- and electroproduction of $KΣ$ have been investigated near their production thresholds by using an effective Lagrangian approach. For this purpose, the background amplitude is constructed from suitable Feynman diagrams, whereas the resonance terms are calculated by means of the Breit-Wigner form of multipoles. Experimental data available in the proton channels ($K^+Σ^0$ and $K^0Σ^+$) with energies up to 50 MeV above the thresholds have been utilized to extract the unknown parameters. In these proton channels the calculated observables fit nicely the experimental data, whereas in the neutron channels ($K^+Σ^-$ and $K^0Σ^0$) the predicted observables contain some uncertainties due to the the uncertainties in the values of helicity photon couplings. To this end, new $K^0Σ^+$ photoproduction data are urgently required. The present analysis indicates the validity of the $P_Λ= -\frac{1}{3} P_Σ$ relation derived a long time ago. In the electroproduction sector the present analysis confirms the smooth transition between photoproduction and low $Q^2$ electroproduction data. The effect of new Crystal Ball data is shown to be mild at the backward angles. It is also found that the electroproductions of $K^0Σ^+$ and $K^0Σ^0$ are practically not the suitable reactions for investigating the $K^0$ charge form factor, since the effect is small.

Viscous Quark-Gluon Plasma Model Through Fluid QCD Approach

A Lagrangian density for viscous quark-gluon plasma has been constructed within the fluid-like QCD framework. Gauge symmetry is preserved for all terms inside the Lagrangian, except for the viscous term. The transition mechanism from point particle field to fluid field, and vice versa, is discussed. The energy momentum tensor that is relevant for the gluonic plasma having the nature of fluid bulk of gluon sea is derived within the model. By imposing conservation law in the energy momentum tensor, shear viscosity appears as extractable from the equation.

Are hyperon resonances required in the elementary $K^+Λ$ photoproduction?

We have investigated the role of hyperon resonances in the kaon photoproduction process, $γp\to K^+Λ$, by using a covariant isobar model. To this end, new experimental data are used in the fitting process, whereas the old SAPHIR 1998 data are also used for comparison. The result indicates that the $Λ(1600)P_{01}$ and $Λ(1810)P_{01}$ hyperon resonances can significantly reduce the $χ^2$ and, simultaneously, can increase the hadronic form factor cut-off in the background terms. This finding is different from the result of the previous studies, which showed that the $Λ(1800)S_{01}$ was important for this purpose, instead of the $Λ(1600)P_{01}$.

Constraining the mass and width of the $N^*(1685)$ resonance

We have examined the existence of the $N^*(1685)$ resonance, which is recently listed by the Particle Data Group as a one-star nucleon resonance, by using a covariant isobar model for kaon photoproduction and assuming that the resonance has $J^p=1/2^+$, in accordance with our previous finding. After the inclusion of this resonance the changes in the total $χ^2$ show two clear minima at $M_{N^*}=1650$ and 1696 MeV, which correspond to two different resonance states. The former corresponds to the narrow nucleon resonance found in our previous investigation, whereas the latter corresponds to a new resonance found as we increase the resonance width. From the latter we derive the mass and width relation of the $N^*(1685)$ resonance. We observe that the properties of both the $N^*(1685)$ and $N^*(1710)P_{11}$ resonances are strongly correlated. Although the best fit of the present work yields $M_{N^*}=1696$ MeV and $Γ_{N^*}=76$ MeV, the apparently small $N^*(1710)P_{11}$ coupling constant to the $K^+Λ$ channel found in previous investigations suggests that $Γ_{N^*}\lesssim 35$ MeV, which, according to the mass and width relation, corresponds to $M_{N^*}\lesssim 1680$ MeV.

Coupling strength of the $N^*(1535)S_{11}$ to the $K^+Λ$ channel

The $N^*(1535)S_{11}$ coupling strength to the $K^+Λ$ channel, $g_{N^*(1535)ΛK^+}$, is extracted from the latest and largest $K^+Λ$ photoproduction database by using an isobar model. It is found that the coupling is small. In term of the coupling ratio the best result is $R\equiv |g_{N^*(1535)ΛK^+}/g_{N^*(1535)ηp}|=0.460\pm 0.172$, much smaller than that obtained from the isobar analysis of the $J/ψ$ decays, i.e., $1.3\pm 0.3$, but consistent with the results of the unitary chiral approach of the same decay processes as well as the partial wave analysis of kaon photoproduction, i.e., $R=0.5\sim 0.7$. The different results of $R$ found here and in literature to date suggest that a more solid definition of the coupling constant, especially in the case of $N^*(1535)S_{11}$ state, is urgently required, before a fair comparison can be made.

Nonidentical protons

We have calculated the proton charge radius by assuming that the real proton radius is not unique and the radii are randomly distributed in a certain range. This is performed by averaging the elastic electron-proton differential cross section over the form factor cut-off. By using a dipole form factor and fitting the middle value of the cut-off to the low $Q^2$ Mainz data, we found the lowest $χ^2/N$ for a cut-off $Λ=0.8203\pm 0.0003$ GeV, which corresponds to a proton charge radius $r_E=0.8333\pm 0.0004$ fm. The result is compatible with the recent precision measurement of the Lamb shift in muonic hydrogen as well as recent calculations using more sophisticated techniques. Our result indicates that the relative variation of the form factor cut-off should be around 21.5%. Based on this result we have investigated effects of the nucleon radius variation on the symmetric nuclear matter (SNM) and the neutron star matter (NSM) by considering the excluded volume effect in our calculation. The mass-radius relation of neutron star is found to be sensitive to this variation. The nucleon effective mass in the SNM as well as the equation of state of both the SNM and the NSM exhibit a similar sensitivity.

Origin of the second peak in the cross section of the $K^+Λ$ photoproduction

By using a covariant isobar model and the latest experimental data we have analyzed the role of the $P_{13}(1900)$ and $D_{13}(2080)$ resonances in the kaon photoproduction process $γp\to K^+Λ$. Special attention has been paid to the region where the second peak in the cross section is located, i.e. at total c.m. energies around 1.9 GeV. It is found that this peak originates mostly from the $P_{13}(1900)$ resonance contribution. Although the contribution of the $D_{13}(2080)$ resonance is not negligible, it is much smaller than that of the $P_{13}(1900)$ state. Our finding confirms that the $P_{13}(1900)$ resonance is also important in explaining the beam-recoil double polarization data $C_x$ and $C_z$, provided that the mass and the width of this resonance are 1871 and 131 MeV, respectively.

Appropriate observables for investigating narrow resonances in kaon photoproduction off a proton

The existence of non-strange partner of pentaquark, the J^p = 1/2^+ narrow resonance, has been investigated by utilizing kaon photoproduction off a proton. It is found that the corresponding mass is 1650 MeV and the appropriate observables for investigating this resonance are the recoiled hyperon polarization, the beam-recoil double polarization C_x, and differential cross section at backward angles. Future kaon photoproduction experiments at low energies should focus on these observables.

Electromagnetic production of hypernuclei

A formalism for the electromagnetic production of hypernuclei is developed where the cross section is written as a contraction between a leptonic tensor and a hadronic tensor. The hadronic tensor is written in a model-independent way by expanding it in terms of a set of five nuclear structure functions. These structure functions are calculated by assuming that the virtual photon interacts with only one bound nucleon. We use the most recent model for the elementary current operator which gives a good description of the experimental data for the corresponding elementary process. The bound state wave functions for the bound nucleon and hyperon are calculated within a relativistic mean-field model. We calculate the unpolarized triple differential cross section for the hypernuclear production process e + 12C --> e + K+ + 12_Lambda{B} as a function of the kaon scattering angle. The nuclear structure functions are calculated within a particle-hole model. The cross section displays a characteristic form of being large for small values of the kaon scattering angle with a smooth fall-off to zero with increasing angle. The shape of the cross section is essentially determined by the nuclear structure functions. In addition, it is found that for the unpolarized triple differential cross section one structure function is negligible over the entire range of the kaon scattering angle.

Evidence for the J^p=1/2^+ narrow state at 1650 MeV in the photoproduction of KLambda

We have investigated the existence of the J^p=1/2^+ narrow resonance predicted by the chiral soliton model by utilizing the kaon photoproduction process gamma + p --> K^+ + Lambda. For this purpose we have constructed two phenomenological models based on our previous effective Lagrangian model, which are able to describe kaon photoproduction from threshold up to W = 1730 MeV. By varying the mass (width) of an inserted P_{11} resonance from 1620 to 1730 MeV (0.1 to 1 MeV and 1 to 10 MeV) a number of fits has been performed in order to search for the resonance mass. Our result indicates that the most promising candidate mass (width) of this resonance is 1650 MeV (5 MeV). Although our calculation does not exclude the possibility of narrow resonances with masses of 1680, 1700 and 1720 MeV, the mass of 1650 MeV is obtained for all phenomenological models used in this investigation. Variations of the resonance width and $KΛ$ branching ratio are found to have a mild effect on the chi^2. The possibility that the obtained result originates from other resonance states is also discussed.

Evidence of the non-strange partner of pentaquark from the elementary $K^+Λ$ photoproduction

The existence of the $J^p=1/2^+$ narrow resonance predicted by the chiral soliton model has been investigated by utilizing the new kaon photoproduction data. For this purpose, we have constructed two phenomenological models, which are able to describe kaon photoproduction from threshold up to W=1730 MeV. By varying the resonance mass, width, and $KΛ$ branching ratio in this energy range we found that the most convincing mass of this resonance is 1650 MeV. Using this result we estimate the masses of other antidecuplet family members.

Kaon photoproduction and electroproduction near threshold

We analyze the electromagnetic production of K^+Lambda and K^0Lambda near their production thresholds by using isobar models. In the K^+Lambda channel we show that the model can nicely describe the available experimental data. In the K^0Lambda channel we demonstrate that the K^0 charge form factor has sizable effects on the longitudinal cross section. By extending the model up to W = 1730 MeV, we are able to observe the existence of the narrow P_{11} (J^p = 1/2^+) resonance in the kaon photoproduction process. It is found that the most convincing mass (width) of this resonance is 1650 MeV (5 MeV).

Photo- and electroproduction of the K^0Lambda near threshold and effects of the K^0 electromagnetic form factor

By extending our previous isobar model to the K^0Lambda isospin channel we investigate the properties of the K^0Lambda photo- and electroproduction at energies near threshold. It is found that the pseudovector (PV) coupling yields significantly larger cross section. Variation of the K_1 coupling constants has significant effect only on the PV model. The electromagnetic form factor of the neutral kaon K^0 is found to have a sizable effect on the longitudinal cross section of the K^0Lambda electroproduction near the threshold.

Role of the $K_1$ meson in $K^0$ photoproduction off the deuteron

Neutral kaon photoproduction off the nucleon and deuteron has been reinvestigated by utilizing the new experimental data on both targets. An isobar model for elementary operator and impulse approximation for the reaction on the deuteron have been used. The available free parameters in the elementary model have been extracted from both elementary and deuteron data. In contrast to the elementary reaction, fitting the deuteron data requires an inclusion of weighting factor. The result indicates that the angular distribution of the elementary $K^0Λ$ process does not show backward peaking behavior.

Strange Particle Production Via The Weak Interaction

The differential cross sections for the neutrino-induced weak charged current production of strange particles in the threshold energy region are presented. The general representation of the weak hadronic current is newly developed in terms of eighteen unknown invariant amplitudes to parametrize the hadron vertex. The Born term approximation is used for the numerical calculations in the framework of the Cabibbo theory and SU(3) symmetry. For unpolarized octet baryons four processes are investigated, whereas in the case of polarized baryons only one process is chosen to study the sensitivity of the differential cross section to the various polarizations of the initial state nucleon and the final state hyperon.

Electromagnetic production of kaon near threshold

Kaon photo- and electroproduction off a proton near the production threshold are investigated by utilizing an isobar model. The background amplitude of the model is constructed from Feynman diagrams, whereas the resonance term is calculated by using the multipole formalism. It is found that both pseudoscalar and pseudovector models can nicely describe the available photoproduction data up to W = 50 MeV above the threshold. The Lambda resonance S_{01}(1800) is found to play an important role in improving the model. In the case of double polarization observables Ox and Oz our result corroborates the finding of Sandorfi et al. Due to the large contributions of the K* and K1 vector mesons, extending the model to the case of electroproduction is almost impossible unless either special form factors that strongly suppress their contributions are introduced or all hadronic coupling constants are refitted to both photo- and electroproduction databases, simultaneously. It is also concluded that investigation of the kaon electromagnetic form factor is not recommended near the threshold region.

Gauge-invariant tree-level photoproduction amplitudes with form factors

We show how the gauge-invariance formulation given by Haberzettl is implemented in practice for photoproduction amplitudes at the tree level with form factors describing composite nucleons. We demonstrate that, in contrast to Ohta's gauge-invariance prescription, this formalism allows electric current contributions to be multiplied by a form factor, i.e., it does not require that they be treated like bare currents. While different in detail, this nevertheless lends support to previous ad hoc approaches which multiply the Born amplitudes by an overall form factor. Numerical results for kaon photoproduction off the nucleon are given. They show that the gauge procedure by Haberzettl leads to much improved $χ^2$ values as compared to Ohta's prescription.

Kaon photoproduction with form factors in a gauge-invariant approach

The general gauge-invariant photoproduction formalism given by Haberzettl is applied to kaon photoproduction off the nucleon at the tree level, with form factors describing composite nucleons. We demonstrate that, in contrast to Ohta's gauge-invariance prescription, this formalism allows electric current contributions to be multiplied by a form factor, i.e., they do not need to be treated like bare currents. Numerical results show that Haberzettl's gauge procedure, when compared to Ohta's, leads to much improved $χ^2$ values. Moreover, predictions for the new Bonn SAPHIR data for $p(γ,K^+)Λ$ are given.

Contributions of strange quarks to the magnetic moment of the proton

Using the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn sum rule and experimental total cross sections for photoproduction of $η$, $K$ and $ϕ$ mesons on the proton, we obtain upper bounds for the contribution of strange quarks to the anomalous magnetic moment of the proton, $|κ_{s}| \le 0.20 κ_{p}$. The proposed experiments to measure the spin-dependence of the absorption cross section are expected to lower these bounds considerably. The existing data on $η$ production and phenomenological models for $K$ production agree with a negative sign for $κ_{s}$.

Constraints on Coupling Constants through Charged $Σ$ Photoproduction

The few available data for the reactions $γp \rightarrow K^{0} Σ^{+}$ and $γn \rightarrow K^{+} Σ^{-}$ are compared to models developed for the processes $γp \rightarrow K^{+} Σ^{0}$ and $γp \rightarrow K^{+} Λ$. It is found that some of these phenomenological models overpredict the measurements by up to a factor of 100. Fitting the data for all of these reactions leads to drastically reduced Born coupling constants.
